Bulk and localized oxygen concentration measurements of steam-oxidized zircaloy-4 using nuclear analysis techniques

Quantitative measurement of both bulk and localized oxygen concentrations is of importance in the study of oxidation kinetics. We describe the combined application of two nuclear techniques, fast neutron activation analysis and (d, p) nuclear microprobe, to the determination of oxygen concentrations and surface profiles for steam-oxidized Zircaloy-4 cladding specimens. Results of measurements using these techniques are presented. Work partially supported by Electric Power Research Institute Contract T.S.A. No. 20.

Equilibrium Measurements by the Transport Method. Determination of the Enthalpie of Formation ΔH°(NbOCl_2,f) by Chemical Transport in the Diffusion Tube By means of chemical transport in an ampoule with a well defined diffusion path the equilibrium NbOCl_2,s + NbCl_5,g ? NbOCl_3,g + NbCl_4,g has been investigated. Introducing a reaction entropy ΔS = 45 cl one gets ΔH = 38(±2) kcal/formula weight and ΔH⁰(NbOCl_2,s)= ?187,6 kcal/mol.     

The connection of the nuclear “Coriolis” force with classical mechanics

The relation between the socalled Coriolis couplingI · j, operating in rotating nuclei, and the classical Coriolis force is discussed. The system forces acting in the cranking model for non-uniform rotation and in the rotator-particle model are examined. Differences with the molecular Coriolis coupling are indicated.     

Design of broadband RF pulses with polynomial-phase response

The achievable bandwidth of common linear-phase RF pulses is limited by the maximum feasible B1 amplitude of the MR system. It has been shown previously, that this limitation can be circumvented by overlaying a quadratic phase in the frequency domain, which spreads the power across the pulse duration. Quadratic-phase RF pulses are near optimal in terms of achieving minimal B1max. In this work, it is demonstrated that further B1max reduction can be achieved by combining quadratic with higher-order polynomial-phase functions. RF pulses with a phase response up to tenth order were designed using the Shinnar-Le Roux transformation, yielding considerable increases in bandwidth and selectivity as compared to pure quadratic-phase pulses. These benefits are studied for a range of pulse specifications and demonstrated experimentally. For B1max = 20 microT and a pulse duration of 2.1 ms, it was possible to increase the bandwidth from 3.1 kHz for linear and 3.8 kHz for a quadratic to 9.9 kHz for a polynomial-phase pulse.     

Regular polytopes from twisted Coxeter groups

Locally toroidal regular polytopes of rank 4

The paper studies various relationships between locally toroidal regular 4-polytopes of types {6, 3,p} and {3, 6, 3}. These relationships are based on corresponding relationships between the regular honeycombs with the same Schläfli-symbol in hyperbolic 3-space. Also the paper discusses regular tessellations (secretions of rank 3) which are locally inscribed into regular 4-polytopes. In particular, this leads to local criteria for the finiteness of the polytopes.     

Thed(7Li,p)8Li cross section nearE cm=0.61 MeV

The absolute cross sectionσ of thed(⁷Li,p)⁸Li reaction near theE _cm=0.61 MeV resonance has been measured using a⁷Li ion beam and a windowless gas target system filled with D₂ gas. The proton yield of the reaction and theβ-delayedα-activity of the residual nuclides⁸Li were observed both concurrently with the elastic scattering yield, relatingσ to the Rutherford scattering cross sectionσ _R. The resulting values,σ (fromp)=143.6±8.9 mb andσ (from⁸Li)=151±20 mb, lead to a weighted mean value ofσ=153±6 mb (x ²=2.26) including all available values andσ=146±5 mb (x ²=0.05) removing some values from the data set. The consequences for the expected flux of high-energy solar neutrinos are discussed.

Syntheses and solid state structures of cyclic diynes with two chalcogen centres--a competition between weak interactions

In this paper we report the synthesis of cyclic diynes of the general formula mX2n. The letters m and n indicate the lengths of chains between two C triple bond C-X units where X indicates S, Se, or Te. The lengths of the bridges vary between m=4-8 and n=2-6. Structural investigations by means of X-ray diffraction reveal for most systems a chair-like conformation in the solid state. For 5S(2)2, 5S(2)3, 7S(2)5, 5Se(2)2 and 5Te(2)3 tubular structures were encountered. These structures can be traced back to weak XX or weak C-Hpi interactions.
