Despite its significance in polycrystalline materials, there have been few experimental investigations of the activity of grain boundary sliding (GBS) and the relationship between GBS and slip transmission at grain boundaries. The present work addresses this knowledge gap by the characterization of full-field strain and microstructural information in an experimental system of high-purity (99.99%) columnar aluminum subjected to uniaxial tension at 190 °C. High-resolution, full-gage strain fields were characterized on an unloaded specimen by distortion-corrected and stitched scanning electron microscope-enabled digital image correlation (SEM-DIC). Alignment between the lower-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and higher-resolution strain fields was significantly improved by clustering of strain data within an EBSD-defined boundary mantle. Grain boundary sliding was investigated at select boundaries, and it was determined that GBS magnitude profiles can have large gradients along a single boundary and vary significantly between boundaries. Using a geometric compatibility factor (m′) to quantify favorability of slip transmission, the two grain boundaries that exhibited the largest average GBS magnitude experienced contiguous slip on moderately well aligned slip systems, although the exact nature of this slip activity, whether transmission or nucleation, remains under investigation.

The propagation of a first-order electromagnetic discontinuity is discussed. Expressions are obtained for the possible velocities of propagation as functions of the field strengths ahead of the surface of discontinuity. Adsorption of Pb2+ ions on the combustion derived nanosized γ-Fe2O3 and its thiourea complex composite is reported. The adsorbents upon adsorption of Pb2+ ions are characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The eluent is characterised by atomic absorption spectroscopy for the estimation of Pb2+ ions. The reduction in the amount of lead after adsorption was estimated to be around 50% in case of complex composite adsorbent and around 15% in case of the γ-Fe2O3 adsorbents. Orthorhombic PbSO4 precipitated out from the eluent and is reported with a model reaction. Adsorption of lead onto the complex composite is explained through the formation of a surface tertiary complex. The advantage of employing a thiourea-γ-Fe2O3 complex composite as solid adsorbent for the adsorption of heavy metal pollutants is envisaged in the present investigation.  相似文献

Thermal techniques viz., TG/DTA/DSC methods have been employed in understanding the formation and decomposition of hydrogen ferrite phase (H-F) as a metastable intermediate in the conversion of -Fe2O3·xH2O, to -Fe2O3. Magnetic hysteresis measurements carried out at liquid N2 and at room temperature for the vacancy ordered -Fe2O3 and its H-F phase also supplement these studies.The author thanks prof. M.R. When radionuclides decay by cascading photons, the accuracy of the measured nuclide activity may be affected by true coincidence summing effects. The effects can be quantified by Monte Carlo simulations that can handle correlated γ-and X-ray emissions from a radionuclide. Analysis techniques are also available commercially to correct for the effects due to cascading γ-rays. The MCNP-CP code was used to compute the effects in high purity germanium detectors for several commonly used nuclides and geometries and the results were compared to measurements and an analysis technique. Excellent agreement in true coincidence summing corrections predicted by MCNP-CP and the analysis technique was obtained. In addition, the X-ray true coincidence summing effects were evaluated.  相似文献
