Baum-Katz-Nagaev type results for martingales

We obtain a Baum-Katz-Nagaev type theorem for bounded martingale difference sequences that have more than a second moment, and prove that the celebrated Hsu-Robbins-Erd?s theorem fails for martingales.     

Interacting neural networks and the emergence of social structure

The article describes a computational model for the simulation of the emergence of social structure or social order, respectively. The model is theoretically based on the theory of social typifying by Berger and Luckmann. It consists of interacting artificial actors (agents), which are represented by two neural networks, an action net, and a perception net. By mutually adjusting of their actions, the agents are able to constitute a self‐organized social order in dependency of their personal characteristics and certain features of their environment. A fictitious example demonstrates the applicability of the model to problems of extra‐terrestrial robotics. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Complexity 12: 41–52, 2007     

On the Effects of UV Radiation on the Release Ability of Glucose Embedded in Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Films

New drug delivery systems based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and different percents of glucose were prepared and characterized to check their suitability as UV resistant patches. The spectral absorption properties of the HPC and HPC-glucose blends before and after UV irradiation were analyzed. The surface polarity and hydrophilicity were correlated with the morphology of the films and analyzed with respect to the UV exposure time and the embedded amount of glucose. The effects of UV radiation on in vitro evaluation of glucose release from the HPC films are reported. The mechanism involved in the drug release process, evaluated using the Korsmeyer-Peppas equation, was dependent on the introduced amount of glucose and less on the UV exposure time. A more polar, smoother, and less dense surface releases the glucose over larger periods of time, making the system with lower percents of glucose more adequate for the pursued purpose.     

Marked point processes for statistical and morphological analysis of astronomical data

This chapter presents fundamental notions concerning stochastic modelling, simulation and statistical inference based on marked point processes. The application aimed by this presentation is pattern detection in spatial astronomical data.
