The production of high‐solid‐content, low‐viscosity latexes is an active field in both industry and academia. The viscosity of polymer dispersions has a clear dependence on the particle size distribution (PSD). An example is the rule of thumb that a bimodal PSD enables the reduction of the viscosity with respect to monomodal systems. Despite important progress in theoretical work, not much has been done to quantitatively predict the low shear viscosity of aqueous polymer dispersions as a function of the complex PSD. In this work, the capability of a low‐shear‐viscosity equation to quantitatively account for the influence of both the PSD and the physicochemical characteristics of the dispersions is experimentally assessed. An analysis, consistent with theoretical concepts, of the data with semiempirical correlations is proposed. Next, with values of the parameters of the viscosity equation obtained experimentally, the effect of a latex with a 70% solid content on the low shear viscosity is examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid crystalline complexes with chromium, molybdenum and with tungsten as metallic centres are reported. 1,4,7-Trisubstituted 1,4,7-triazacyclononane and three carbonyl groups are coordinated in an octahedral geometry. The observed mesophases are characterized as disordered rectangular columnar of a pyramidic type.  相似文献

Novel nickel(II) bisbenzimidazole complexes were prepared via a three‐step synthetic procedure consisting of aniline/diacid condensation, ligand N‐alkylation, and metal complexation. The complexes were characterized by X‐ray crystallography and found to possess a pseudotetrahedral geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane, these nickel bisbenzimidazoles did not polymerize simple olefins (e.g., ethylene, propylene, and 1‐butene) but were found to carry out the rapid and efficient polymerization of norbornene. The polynorbornene products were characterized by gel permeation chromatography/light scattering, 13C NMR, and IR, and their Mark–Houwink and dn/dc parameters were determined. The molecular weights of the polynorbornenes were very high (weight‐average molecular weight = 587,000–797,000 g/mol). 13C NMR suggested that the polymerization occurred via vinyl addition (i.e., a 2,3‐linked polymer); no ring‐opened product was observed. A practical and divergent synthesis of supported [1,3,5]‐triazine dendritic molecules on Wang resin, PEGA resin, SynPhase? Lanterns, and silica gel is described. The alkylamine linkers used allow derivatization with functionality for both synthetic (e.g., supported reagent and scavenger activity) and chemical biology applications. The use of supported intermediates allows differentiation of symmetric linkers without the need for protecting group chemistry. The synthetic route uses inexpensive, readily available starting materials in a straightforward and scaleable strategy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-source mass spectrometry has been used to determine thirty elements (Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, As, Rb, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Yb, Hf, Ta, W, Th, U) in seven Chinese reference soils. The Surrey prototype spectrometer was employed with sample ablation by a free-running ruby laser. Concentrations in the soils (GSS-2 to GSS-8) were calculated from elemental responses and sensitivities derived from another soil in the series, namely GSS-1. Comparisons with previous neutron activation analyses are made. Rapid semiquantitative analyses are proved feasible. About eighty percent of the LA-ICP-MS determined concentrations were within a factor of two of the concentrations measured by INAA, and many were considerably closer than this. Precisions were typically in the range 2–10% RSD, but some were considerably poorer for elements present at trace levels.  相似文献

A study has been made of the structure of the capsids of T4D giant phage produced from mutants in gene 23 and temperature-sensitive mutants in gene 24, and T4D and T2L giant phage formed by the addition of L-canavanine followed by an Larginine chase in the growth medium. All the giant phage capsids have been shown to be built according to the same geometrical architecture. This consists of a near-hexagonal surface net, lattice constant 129.5 A, folded into a left-handed T = 13 prolate icosahedron elongated along one of its fivefold symmetry axes. Their only apparent difference from wild-type T-even phage capsids is their abnormally elongated tubular part. A comparison of the capsomere morphologies and protein compositions of the giant phage capsids showed that all T4D giants are identical but differ from T2L: The T4D capsomere has a complex (6 + 6 + 1)-type morphology, whereas the T2L has a simple 6-type. T2L phage, however, lack two capsid proteins, "soc" and "hoc", present in T4D. The difference in capsomere morphology can therefore be related to the difference in the protein compositions of these two phage. Possible differences between the initiation and means of length regulation of giant phage heads and the aberrant polyheads are discussed.  相似文献

Reaction of camphor with hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid affords the nitrogen insertion product α-camphidone by migration of the methylene group rather than the bridgehead. Since Beckmann rearrangements of trigonal oximes afford bridgehead cleavage products with camphor, an alternative synchronous rearrangement of a tetrahedral intermediate is proposed for this Beckmann-like reaction.  相似文献
