Highly selective PVC-membrane electrodes based on Co(II)-Salen for determination of nitrite ion.

A cobalt(II) derivative was used as a suitable ionophore for the preparation of a polymeric membrane nitrite-selective electrode. The electrode reveals a Nemstian behavior over a very wide NO2- ion concentration range (1.0 x 10(-6)-1.0 x 10(-1) M) and a very low detection limit (5.0 x 10(-7) M). The potentiometric response is independent of the pH of solution in the pH range 4.0-9.5. The electrode shows advantages such as low resistance, fast response and, most importantly, good selectivity relative to a wide variety of inorganic and organic anions. In fact, the selectivity behavior of the proposed NO2- ion-selective electrode shows great improvements compared to the previously reported electrodes for nitrite ion. The proposed electrodes could be used for at least 2 months without any significant changes in potentials. The electrode was successfully applied to the determination of nitrate ion concentrations in sausage and milk samples.

Headspace solvent microextraction of trihalomethane compounds into a single drop

Headspace solvent microextraction (HSME) into a single drop is developed for the determination of six trihalomethanes, CH2Cl2, CHCl3, C4H9Cl, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2Cl4, in aqueous solution. A drop of benzyl alcohol containing bromoform, as an internal standard, is used for extraction. The analytes are extracted by suspending a 3-microL drop directly from the needle of a microsyringe. The needle passes through the septum of a vessel, and the needle tip appears above the surface of the solution. After the prescribed extraction time, the drop is drawn back into the syringe. The syringe is then removed, and its content is injected directly into a gas chromatography column for analysis. The main parameters affecting the HSME process, such as stirring speed, microdrop volume, sample solution temperature, microsyringe needle temperature, sample volume, solution pH, extracting solvent, and ionic strength of the solution, are studied. Also, the linear range and precision of the method are examined.     

Specific Uphill Transport of Zinc as Zn(SCN)42− Ion using Na+-Dicyclohexyl-18-Crown-6 as Carrier

Sodium-dicyclohexyl- 18-crown-6 complex cation was used as carrier for the uphill transport of zinc as Zn(SCN)₄^2? complex anion. By using L-cysteine as a metal ion acceptor in the receiving phase at the optimized pH of 7.6, the amount of zinc transport through the liquid membrane after 90 min was 97.2 ± 1.0%. The selectivity and efficiency of zinc transport from aqueous solutions containing equimolar mixtures of Ag⁺, Cd²⁺ Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺, Ni²⁺, Pb²⁺, Pd²⁺, Sr²⁺, Bi³⁺, Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions was investigated. In the presence of NH₂OH.HCl as a suitable masking agent in the source phase, the interfering effect of Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions was diminished drastically.     

Si-tolerance of iron doped Pt/alumina catalyst in the total oxidation of VOC

Summary In the present study the effects of addition of iron on the catalytic activity and Si tolerability of Pt/g-Al₂O₃in the total oxidation of volatile organic compounds were investigated. Preliminary results showed that there is a noticeable improvement effect on Si-tolerance of catalyst, particularly for short term poison exposure. Bulk analysis of deposited silicon on the catalyst surface indicated that both Pt/g-Al₂O₃and iron-doped pellets had roughly the same silicone uptakes. Deactivation of catalyst was reversible and much faster for iron doped sample. The promoting effects of iron were related to its electronegativity and, to blocking of fewer Pt sites when iron is present at the surface of the catalyst.

Optimization of synthesis procedure and structure characterization of manganese tungstate nanoplates

A simple and fast chemical method was used for synthesis of manganese tungstate nanoplates in flower-like clusters; while Taguchi robust design was employed as statistical method for optimization of the experimental parameters for the procedure. Ultrafine manganese tungstate plates in flower-like clusters were synthesized via a direct precipitation method involving addition of manganese ion solution to the aqueous tungstate reagent. Effects of various reaction conditions such as manganese and tungstate concentrations, flow rate of reagent addition and reactor temperature on the thickness of the synthesized manganese tungstate plates were investigated experimentally. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that manganese tungstate nanoplates could be effectively synthesized by tuning significant parameters of precipitation procedure. Meanwhile, optimum conditions for synthesis of MnWO4 nanoplates via this simple, fast, and cost effective method were proposed. The structure and composition of the prepared nanoplates under optimum conditions were characterized by EDX, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FT-IR spectroscopy, and photoluminescence techniques.      

Homogeneous Liquid–Liquid Microextraction Via Flotation Assistance (HLLME-FA) Method for the Pretreatment of Organochlorine Pesticides in Aqueous Samples and Determination by GC–MS

This work proposes a new, rapid and simple homogeneous liquid–liquid microextraction via flotation assistance technique for the analysis of six organochlorine pesticides in water samples. A special extraction cell was used to facilitate collection of the low-density solvent extract. No centrifugation was required in this procedure. Determination was carried using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The water sample solution was then added into the extraction cell containing appropriate mixture of extract and homogeneous solvents. In the first step, a homogeneous solution and then with the continuation of water sample injection, a cloudy solution was formed. Using air flotation, the organic solution was collected at the conical part of the designed cell. The optimized levels of effective parameters were found based on response surface methodology approach. Applying the optimized conditions to the system understudy, the limits of detection of all target analytes were obtained in the range of 1.4–7 ng mL^?1, while the precisions were found to be in the range of 11.08–14.87 (RSD, n = 3). The linearity of the method lay in the range of 10–150 ng mL^?1 with the coefficients of correlation (r ² ) ranging from 0.998 to 0.999.     

Mild and Efficient Procedure for Michael Addition of N-Heterocycles to α,β-Unsaturated Compounds Using Anhydrous K3PO4 as Catalyst

Imidazole, 1,2,4-triazole, indole, and benzotriazole undergo conjugate additions with α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds in the presence of anhydrous potassium phosphate at ambient temperature to afford the corresponding Michael adducts in excellent yields.
