The determination of molybdenum and tungsten in sea and surface water

A simple method for the determination of molybdenum and tungsten in sea and surface water is presented. Molybdenum and tungsten are concentrated on activated charcoal by adsorption as the ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate complex; the optimal pH for adsorption is 1.3. Mo and W are then determined by thermal neutron activation, forming ⁹⁹Mo (T_{$\text{1}\text{2}$} = 66.7 h) and ¹³⁷W (T_{$\text{1}\text{2}$} = 23.8 h), respectively. The ^99mTc daughter of ⁹⁹Mo is measured as soon as the equilibrium between ^99mTc(T_{$\text{1}\text{2}$}= 6 h) and ⁹⁹Mo is established. The detection limits are 0.05 μg Mo l^-1 and 0.05 μg W l^-1 (or 0.001 μg W l^-1 after a simple chemical separation).     

Some investigations on the photostabilization of polypropylene

The effect of substituted hydroxybenzophenone, benzotriazole and organic metal complexes on the photooxidation of PP films has been studied. It has been established that NiDBTC added in 1.0 wt. % is the most effective photostabilizer.While in the case of other stabilizers there is a slight increase in the Co content even during the induction period, with the application of NiDBTC practically no oxidation can be observed before the stabilizer completely disappears. This means that NiDBTC inhibits the photooxidation of the polymer even in low concentration.

Full verification of the liquid exclusion-adsorption chromatography theory using monolithic capillary columns

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was used to separate alkyl phenol ethoxylates (APEs) as model diblock copolymers, with monolithic polymers as stationary phases. The order of elution indicate that the two polymer blocks follow distinct chromatographic modes: size-exclusion for the poly(oxyethylene) group and adsorption interaction for the alkyl part. Therefore, our experimental results were compared to the theory describing liquid exclusion-adsorption chromatography (LEAC). They were found in perfect agreement with the theory, which turned to be verified for the first time over the full range of polymer lengths.     

Heats of solution of gaseous hydrocarbons in water at 25°C

The heats of solution at 25°C for a number of hydrocarbon gases are reported as measured by a calorimetric method. There is excellent agreement between the standard enthalpy changes of solution measured calorimetrically and those derived from high precision temperature dependent solubility measurements. However the calorimetrically determined standard enthalpies of solution of a number of gases are greatly improved over values obtained from low precision temperature dependent solubility measurements. A method is presented to readily estimate the standard errors in the standard enthalpy change for any process derived from the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant for the process. Comparison of the standard enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrocarbon gases in water shows that the standard free energies of solution for all hydrocarbon gases investigated are dominated by unfavorable entropy contributions. A strong linear correlation between the standard entropy of solution and the number of hydrogens in the hydrocarbon molecule is found. This correlation suggests that the hydrocarbon hydrophobic effect is regulated by the number of allowable configurations of a water molecule in contact with each C–H group.     

5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid by treatment of sepiomelanin with sodium borohydride.

Mild treatment of sepiomelanin and biosynthetic eumelanins with NaBH₄ in 0.1 N NaOH leads to the isolation of 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid ($\text{3}$), a component of structural interest which may account for most of the degradation products of melanins so far obtained.     

Reductive cleavage of axially disymmetric tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium salts by lithium aluminium hydride. Synthesis of new 1,1′-binaphthyl substituted amines

Axially disymmetric tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium salts $\text{A}$ are synthesized by double alkylation of primary or secondary amines with racemic or optically pure 2,2′-bis (bromomethyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl. Their reductive cleavage by lithium aluminium hydride in refluxing THF leads to chiral secondary or tertiary amines $\text{B}$, substituted by a binaphthyl unit, with high yields and absence of racemization.     

Studies on the conversions of diols and cyclic ethers—49: Stereochemistry of cyclodehydration of 1,4-diols on the action of brönsted and lewis acids: a comprehensive study

The stereochemistry of the cyclodehydration of (±)- and meso-2,5-hexanediol on the action of various dehydrating agents was investigated. The earlier assumed and confirmed intramolecular S_N2 mechanism for acid-catalysed ring-closure was found to hold in most cases. Various extents of racemisation can be observed on the action of certain Lewis acids, and the solvents concentrated H₂SO₄ and HMPT (hexamethyl phosporic acid triamide) under previously unexamined reaction conditions.     

Novel pyrimidine-bridged platinum(II) complexes: multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and crystal structures of (NR4)2[(PtCl3)2(mu-pyrimidine)] and cis- and trans-[Pt(R2SO)Cl2]2(mu-pyrimidine)

Two new types of pyrimidine-bridged Pt(II) complexes, (NR4)2[(PtCl3)2(mu-pm)] and cis- and trans-[Pt(R2SO)Cl2]2(mu-pm) where pm = pyrimidine, were synthesized and characterized by IR and multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies and by crystallographic methods. Compounds with dimethylsulfoxide, tetramethylenesulfoxide, di-n-propylsulfoxide (DPrSO), di-n-butylsulfoxide (DBuSO), dibenzylsulfoxide (DBzSO), and diphenylsulfoxide were studied. The aqueous reaction of K2PtCl4 with pyrimidine produced the [(PtCl3)2(mu-pm)](2-) ions, which can be precipitated with a NR4(+) salt. The aqueous reaction of K[Pt(R2SO)Cl3] with pyrimidine in a 2:1 ratio produced the dinuclear species trans-[Pt(R2SO)Cl2]2(mu-pm). With DBuSO and DBzSO, the analogous cis isomers were also obtained. The 195Pt NMR resonances of the trans dimeric complexes were observed at higher field (av -3088 ppm) than the cis compounds (av -2948 ppm). The 195Pt coupling constants with the atoms of pyrimidine 3J(195Pt-1H) and 3J(195Pt-13C) are larger in the cis configuration than in the trans analogues. The crystal structures of two ionic complexes, (NR4)2[(PtCl3)2(mu-pm)] (R = Me and n-Bu), and of three mixed-ligands dimers, trans-[Pt(R2SO)Cl2]2(mu-pm) (R2SO = DMSO, DPrSO) and cis-Pt(DBuSO)Cl2]2(mu-pm), were determined.     

Study of the thermal oxidation of polyolefines—II: Effect of layer thickness on the rate of oxidation in the melt phase

A study was made of the kinetics of oxygen absorption and isothermal weight change as a function of layer thickness for molten polyethylene at 157° under oxygen at 650 torr pressure. The effect of the rate of transport processes on the rate of thermal oxidation was found to be conversion dependent.Comparison of the experimental data on the effect of layer thickness on the maximum rate of oxygen absorption with the results of calculations (carried out assuming various overall reaction orders and applying literature data on permeability coefficient) suggests that, during degradation, the reaction rate is affected by the opposed transport processes of oxygen and the volatile decomposition products. The weight change, closely related to the transport process of volatile products, is diffusion-controlled over the whole range of thickness studied. At the same time, below a critical thickness (approx. 0·05 mm), even the maximum rate of oxygen consumption may be considered a function of only the kinetic parameters.     

Dérivés de la dihydro-2,4 triazole-1,2,4 thione-3 et de l'amino-2 thiadiazole-1,3,4 à partir de nouvelles thiosemicarbazones d'esters

A new general synthesis of 4,5-disubstituted 2,4-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones is proposed. These heterocycles are obtained by the action of primary amines, arylhydrazines or aroylhydrazines on the thiosemicarbazones of eaters. These last compounds are prepared by action of chlorhydrates of iminoethers on thiosemicarbazide in dimethylformamide. These thiosemicarbazones react also with strong acids, acid anhydrides and chlorides; by thermolysis and they give 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives. Also, two derivatives of 1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole have been prepared.
