The direction of the dipole moments of furan,thiophen, and pyrrole: A controversial question

The report that the dipole moment in the five-membered heterocyclic rings, furan, thiophene, and pyrrole has the positive pole on the heteroatom is contradicted with arguments based on reactivity data, theoretical calculations and moment values of substituted derivatives. In actuality, the dipole moment in furan and thiophene is directed from the ring (positive pole) to the heteroatom (negative pole).     

Thermal properties of some complexes of quinolinic acid with divalent metal ions

Studies of the complexes of pyridinecarboxylic acids with divalent metal ions as a function of the position of the carboxyl groups were extended. The thermal properties of the complexes of quinoline acid (pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid) with several divalent metal ions were determined by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). A correlation between these compounds and others obtained by reaction between the studied metal ions with similar acids (lutidinic acid (pyridine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid) and isocinchomeronic acid (pyridine-2,5-di-carboxylic acid) is discussed in terms of the position of the carboxyl group far from the aza group. The thermal stability of the metal complexes is in the order Mn(II) > Fe(II) > Zn(II) ? Co(II) > Ni(II) > Cu(II).     

Total synthesis of (+)-aspidospermidine: a new strategy for the enantiospecific synthesis of aspidosperma alkaloids

A new strategy was developed for the enantiospecific synthesis of aspidosperma alkaloids. The key steps involve a novel ketene-lactonization reaction of a chiral vinyl sulfoxide to efficiently set up the quaternary carbon center, and a tandem Michael addition-alkylation reaction sequence to form the polycyclic core structure. This new strategy was employed in the total synthesis of natural product (+)-aspidospermidine.

A new search for the atomic EDM of 129Xe at FRM-II

Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) arise due to the breaking of time-reversal or, equivalently, CP-symmetry. Although EDM searches have so far only set upper limits, which are many orders of magnitude larger than Standard Model (SM) predictions, the motivation for more sensitive searches is stronger than ever. A new effort at FRM-II incorporating ¹²⁹Xe and ³He as a co-magnetometer can potentially improve the current limit. The noble gas mixture of ¹²⁹Xe and ³He is simultanously polarized by spin-exchange optical pumping and then transferred into a high-performance magnetically shielded room. Inside, both species can freely precess in the presence of applied magnetic and electric fields. The precession signals are detected by LTc SQUID sensors. In EDM cells with silicon electrodes we observed spin lifetimes in excess of 2500 s without and with high-voltage applied. This meets one requirement to achieve our goal of improving the EDM limit on ¹²⁹Xe by several orders of magnitude.     

Shear banding in biphasic liquid-liquid systems

In this Letter, we present the first systematic report of shear-induced banding in microconfined biphasic liquid-liquid systems, i.e., formation of alternating regions of high and low volume fraction of dispersed-phase droplets in a parallel plate flow cell. Such a flow-driven, gap-dependent phenomenon is only observed at low values of the viscosity ratio between the dispersed and the continuous phase, and in a given range of the applied shear rate. Based on rheological measurements, band formation is found to be associated with a viscosity decrease as compared to the homogeneous, structureless case, thus showing that system microstructure is somehow evolving towards reduced viscous dissipation under shear flow.     

Honeycomb pattern formation by laser-beam filamentation in atomic sodium vapor

We have observed transverse pattern formation leading to highly regular structures in both the near and far fields when a near-resonant laser beam propagates without feedback through an atomic sodium vapor. One example is a regular far-field honeycomb pattern, which results from the transformation of the laser beam within the vapor into a stable three-lobed structure with a uniform phase distribution and highly correlated power fluctuations. The predictions of a theoretical model of the filamentation process are in good agreement with these observations.
