Observation of the nonlinear effect in relativistic Thomson scattering of electron and laser beams

Thomson scattering of high-power laser and electron beams is a good test of electrodynamics in the high-field region. We demonstrated production of high-intensity X-rays in the head-on collision of a CO₂ laser and 60-MeV electron beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Accelerator Test Facility. The energy of an X-ray photon was limited at 6.5 keV in the linear (lowest order) Thomson scattering, but the nonlinear (higher order) process produces higher energy X-rays. We measured the angular distribution of the high-energy X-rays and confirmed that it agrees with theoretical predictions.     

The synthesis of isoquinoline alkaloid and its related compounds using alanine derivatives as chiral auxiliaries

Chiral 1-substituted isoquinoline derivatives, which were obtained by the reaction using alanine derivatives as chiral auxiliaries, were transformed to (S)-2,3,9,10,11-pentamethoxyhomoprotoberberine (7) and a synthetic intermediate for O-methylkreysigine (9) in good yields and high stereoselectivity. The corresponding chiral allyl derivative of isoquinoline was transformed to a pyrrolidinoisoquinoline (16) in a highly enantioselective manner.     

Absorption and excretion of suprofen in both sexes of rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits

DL-2-(4-2-Thienylcarbonyl)phenyl)propionic acid (suprofen) was rapidly absorbed in both sexes of rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits after oral administration. Blood levels after a single dose of 2 mg/kg 3H-suprofen in all the animals reached maxima within 15 min, and elimination of the 3H from blood was rapid; the radioactivity was mostly excreted in the urine and feces within 24 h after dosing.     

Enzymatic Hydrolysis-Responsive Supramolecular Hydrogels Composed of Maltose-Coupled Amphiphilic Ureas

Maltose is a ubiquitous disaccharide produced by the hydrolysis of starch. Amphiphilic ureas bearing hydrophilic maltose moiety were synthesized via the following three steps: I) construction of urea derivatives by the condensation of 4-nitrophenyl isocyanate and alkylamines, II) reduction of the nitro group by hydrogenation, and III) an aminoglycosylation reaction of the amino group and the unprotected maltose. These amphiphilic ureas functioned as low molecular weight hydrogelators, and the mixtures of the amphipathic ureas and water formed supramolecular hydrogels. The gelation ability largely depended on the chain length of the alkyl group of the amphiphilic urea; amphipathic urea having a decyl group had the highest gelation ability (minimum gelation concentration=0.4 mM). The physical properties of the supramolecular hydrogels were evaluated by measuring their thermal stability and dynamic viscoelasticity. These supramolecular hydrogels underwent gel-to-sol phase transition upon the addition of α-glucosidase as a result of the α-glucosidase-catalyzed hydrolysis of the maltose moiety of the amphipathic urea.     

A new gluco indole alkaloid, 3, 4-dehydro-5-carboxystrictosidine, from Peruvian Uña de Gato (Uncaria tomentosa)

A new gluco indole alkaloid, 3,4-dehydro-5-carboxystrictosidine, was obtained from Peruvian U?a de Gato (Cat's Claw, original plant: Uncaria tomentosa) together with two known gluco indole alkaloids. This compound was the first example of isolation of a gluco monoterpenoid indole alkaloid having a 3,4-dihydro-beta-carboline ring system from nature. A characteristic feature of the compound was the quick replacement of the methylene hydrogens on C-14 with deuterium that was observed when it was dissolved in CD3OD. We demonstrated a similar proton-deuterium exchange on a model compound, 1-methyl-3,4-dihydro-gamma-carboline, in CD3OD solution.     

Experimental evidence for the p-d hybridization in the Cd-Ca quasicrystal: origin of the pseudogap

Ca 2p-3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy of a Cd6Ca crystalline approximant unambiguously demonstrates that the low-lying unoccupied 3d levels of calcium are lowered below the Fermi energy by the formation of the approximant, as suggested from electronic structure calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 206408 (2001)]]. Moreover, the Ca 3d partial density of states (DOS) obtained near the Fermi energy is in reasonable agreement with theoretical Ca 3d DOS. These results verify the unconventional picture that the origin of the pseudogap in the Cd-based quasicrystals is due to hybridization of the Ca 3d band with the Cd 5p band.     

Photoemission spectroscopy of the strong-coupling superconducting transitions in lead and niobium

Scanning tunneling microscopy on roughened Au(110) reveals that the equilibrium shape of islands and pits on this surface is almondlike: each island contains two smoothly curved steps joined at two sharp corners. This shape has recently been predicted and finds its origin in the missing-row reconstruction of its fcc (110) surfaces (Au, Pt, etc.). We use the corner angles and the island shapes to determine the step energies. In addition we find that during the decay of an island on the Au(110) surface the shape changes and that the disappearance of the island involves the splitting of the layer below the island into two disconnected regions. The shape change has a dramatic influence on the decay rate of the islands.
