The turbulent flow in a compound meandering channel with a rectangular cross section is one of the most complicated turbulent flows, because the flow behaviour is influenced by several kinds of forces, including centrifugal forces, pressure‐driven forces and shear stresses generated by momentum transfer between the main channel and the flood plain. Numerical analysis has been performed for the fully developed turbulent flow in a compound meandering open‐channel flow using an algebraic Reynolds stress model. The boundary‐fitted coordinate system is introduced as a method for coordinate transformation in order to set the boundary conditions along the complicated shape of the meandering open channel. The turbulence model consists of transport equations for turbulent energy and dissipation, in conjunction with an algebraic stress model based on the Reynolds stress transport equations. With reference to the pressure–strain term, we have made use of a modified pressure–strain term. The boundary condition of the fluctuating vertical velocity is set to zero not only for the free surface, but also for computational grid points next to the free surface, because experimental results have shown that the fluctuating vertical velocity approaches zero near the free surface. In order to examine the validity of the present numerical method and the turbulent model, the calculated results are compared with experimental data measured by laser Doppler anemometer. In addition, the compound meandering open channel is clarified somewhat based on the calculated results. As a result of the analysis, the present algebraic Reynolds stress model is shown to be able to reasonably predict the turbulent flow in a compound meandering open channel. A rate equation for photodegradation was derived from Lambert-Beer's law and Grotthus-Draper's law: -dc/dt=k1(1-exp(-(k2c+k3(c0-c))))k2c/(k2c+k3(c0-c)) where c is the concentration of reactant, c0 is the initial concentration of reactant, t is time, k1 is the rate constant, and k2 and k3 are the absorption coefficient of reactant and its photodegradation product, respectively. In a case where the photodegradation products have no photoabsorption, k3 assumes the value of zero in the above general equation. In a case where the photodegradation products have the same spectrum and molar absorptivity as that of the reactant, k3 assumes the value of k2, and hence the photodegradation is not a first-order reaction; however, the equation itself gives the pseudo-first-order reaction rate equation. In a case where the concentration of reactant is high enough, the equation approaches a zero-order reaction rate equation. The photodegradation rate of nifedipine in solutions under a germicidal lamp, near an ultraviolet fluorescent lamp and a fluorescent lamp was analyzed using the above equation. The photodegradation rate was directly proportional to the amount of light absorbed, and fitted well with the equation. The radical polymerizability of vinylpyridines in the presence of cobaltous chloride was studied in DMF solution, and the results were correlated with the spectroscopic data obtained for methanol solution. In general, the behavior of vinylpyridine complexed with cobaltous chloride is qualitatively the same as that of zinc complexes reported previously. The rates of polymerization were enhanced by the addition of cobaltous chloride when 4-vinylpyridine(4-VP) or 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine(MVP) was the monomer, whereas the polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine(2-VP) was retarded by cobaltous chloride. The monomer reactivity of all the vinylpyridines was also enhanced by complex formation as studied by copolymerization with styrene. Complex bismuth oxides with layered structure are prepared with a series of compositions in the system Bi2CaNb2O9-NaNbO3. It is found by X-ray powder diffraction that each compound is composed of more than two phases, which are described by a formula Bi2CaNan?2NbnO3n+3, e.g., in the sample with the nominal composition Bi2CaNb2O9 · 8NaNbO3, the phases with n = 6 to 8 appear predominantly. These phases are closely intergrown to each other. Moreover, high-resolution electron microscopy reveals that microsyntactic intergrowth frequently occurs in the phases with n > 5. Chemiluminescence from HgBr(B) formed in the reaction of Hg(63Po with Br2 has been observed using a N2-seeded nozzle beam of metastable Hg3Po) atoms. The cross section has been estimated to be 3+3?2 at a collission energy of 0.33 eV.
