Mass spectral study on thiazolo[3,2-a]benzimidazoles. Studies on heterocyclic compounds. IV

Condensation of α-halocarbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole gives thiazolo-[3,2-a]benzimidazoles. This condensation occurred at the mercapto group of the benzimidazole followed by cyclization to form the thiazole ring. This was confirmed by the examination of the mass spectra of 2- and 3-methylthiazolo[3,2-a]benzimidazoles, 2- and 3-phenylthiazolo[3,2-a]-benzimidazoles, and their derivatives.     

Kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of 1,10-phenanthroline—copper(II) complex

The cyclic voltammetric study of 1,10-phenanthroline—copper(II) complex was carried out in acidic buffer solution. It was found from the current—mole ratio (copper (II): 1,10-phenanthroline) relationship that the maximum coordination number of 1,10-phenanthroline—copper(II) complex was four under the present experimental condition. The reduction mechanism and kinetics of copper(II) was studied in the presence of various concentrations of 1,10-phenanthroline.     

Photodynamic Efficiency of Protoporphyrin IX: Comparison of Endogenous Protoporphyrin IX Induced by 5-Aminolevulinic Acid and Exogenous Porphyrin IX

Abstract— Photodynamic efficiency of protoporphyrin IX (PP) accumulated in HeLa cells by the incubation of PP with HeLa cells was compared with that of accumulated PP formed from 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as a precursor. The ALA-induced PP was photodynamically more efficient than exogenous PP. The difference is caused by monomelic PP concentration and PP localization site in HeLa cells. Exogenous PP was accumulated mainly in plasma membrane, and the membrane was strongly damaged by irradiation. The ALA-induced PP was selectively accumulated in mitochondria and inactivated the mitochondrial function by irradiation.     

Phase rotation scheme of laser-produced ions for reduction of the energy spread

In order to widely spread out particle beams utilized in cancer therapy, laser-produced ions are developed as the injection beam for an ion synchrotron dedicated for cancer therapy. Such a laser ion source is expected to contribute largely to the realization of compactness of the size and low cost of the cancer therapy accelerator. The energy spectrum of the laser-produced ions, however, has no peak, but their intensities decrease exponentially according to the increase of the energy. For the purpose of modifying such a situation, we have proposed a scheme to rotate the beam in the longitudinal phase space with the use of the RF electric field, which is phase-adjusted with the pulse laser. We aim for a reduction of the energy spread of ± 5% selected by an energy analyzer and slits to ±1% by such phase rotation. For this purpose, a quarter wavelength resonator with two gaps with the same resonant frequency as the source laser has already been fabricated, together with its RF power source. The above phase rotation system and its recent experimental realization are presented.     

Complexability of o-bisguanidinobenzenes with arsenic and phosphoric acids in solution and solid states, and the potential use of their immobilized derivatives as solid base ligands for metal salts and arsenic acid

The role of o-bisguanidinobenzenes (BGBs) as new Brønsted base ligands for arsenic and phosphoric acids was examined. In solution state, complexation was evaluated by Job’s plot in ¹H NMR experiment, indicating a 1:1 complex formation, whereas in solid state crystalline structures of complexes obtained were addressed by X-ray crystallographic analysis and/or solid state ¹³C NMR experiment, in which 1:2 complexes between the BGB and the acid components were normally formed. Based on these results, Merrifield and Hypogel^® resin-anchored BGBs were designed and prepared as the corresponding polymer-supported host ligands. Evaluation of their coordination ability with metal salts (ZnCl₂ and CoCl₂) and arsenic acid in aqueous media by ICP-MS showed that the latter Hypogel^® resin-anchored BGBs acted as effective immobilized base ligands.     

Characterization of preformed plasmas with an interferometer for ultra-short high-intensity laser-plasma interactions

The evolution of an Al preformed plasma produced by a prepulse was observed before and after the arrival of the main pulse by an interferometer using a femtosecond probe pulse. A central density depression due to the ponderomotive force of the main laser pulse in the preformed plasma with a 100 m scale length was clearly visible after the main pulse irradiation at an intensity of 5×10¹⁶ W/cm². The temporal profiles of the prepulse, characterized by a cross-correlation in conjunction with a precise density profile measurement by an interferometer, contribute to the better understanding of femtosecond laser-matter interactions. Electric Field Gradients of B in TiO2

We observed the electric quadrupole interaction of ¹²B implanted in the interstitial site of TiO₂ using β-NMR method. The electric field gradients including the direction of the principal axes were determined. The direction agreed well with the theoretical calculation.     

Nuclear spin manipulation in interfaces of diluted magnetic semiconductors

Nuclear spin manipulation using an interface of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) is proposed. On the basis of the first-principles electronic structure calculation, we show that the hyperfine fields at an impurity site in the interface between a DMS and a base substance is dramatically changed by an external electric field. The electric field dependence of the hyperfine fields at the impurity nucleus in the interface of (InMn)As and (GaMn)As is examined.     

Demonstration of laser-frequency upshift by electron-density modulations in a plasma wakefield

In a plasma wake wave generated by a high power laser, modulations of the electron density take the shape of paraboloidal dense shells, moving almost at the speed of light. A counterpropagating laser pulse is partially reflected from the shells, acting as relativistic flying mirrors, producing a time-compressed frequency-multiplied pulse due to the double Doppler effect. The counterpropagating laser pulse reflection from the plasma wake wave accompanied by its frequency multiplication (with a factor from 50 to 114) was detected in our experiment.
