To describe the long time asymptotic behaviour of weakly nonlinear plasma waves propagating in a strongly magnetized plasmafilled cylindrical waveguide the usual KDV equation which is first order in wave amplitude is extended to second order including the effects of finite temperature, mobile ions and giving a proper treatment to the radial co-ordinate for all possible modes of propagation. The second-order effects on the first-order solitary wave profile, phase speed and first order correction to the wavelength are all determined and discussed.  相似文献

In nature, shape and structure evolve from the struggle for better performance. Often, biological structures combine multiple beneficial properties, making research into mimicking them very complex. Presented here is a summary of observations from a series of experiments performed on a material that closely resembles the human skull bone’s cancellous structure under acoustic loads. Transmission loss through flat and curved open-cell polyurethane foam samples is observed using air and water as the two interstitial fluids. Reduction in strength and stiffness caused by porosity can be recovered partially by filling the interstitial pores with a fluid. The test findings demonstrate the influence of the interstitial fluid on the mechanical characteristics of a porous structure in a quantitative manner. It is also demonstrated that the transmission loss does not depend only on the mass per unit area of the structure as predicted by acoustic mass law. Current tests also demonstrate that the transmission loss is more sensitive to the interstitial fluid than the shape and support conditions of the structures. Test observations thus support the concepts of “moisture-sensitivity of biological design” and the “law of hierarchy in natural design”.  相似文献

Abstract —Thymine starvation prior to 254 nm ultraviolet light (UV) exposures has been found to decrease the level of maximum photoreactivation in Escherichia coli B s-1. The dark equilibrium level of photoreactivating enzyme-substrate complexes was determined from the levels of photoreactivation obtained with exposures to single flashes of high-intensity light. The kinetics indicate that photoreactivating enzyme concentration does not decrease as a result of thymine starvation. The UV sensitivities of normal and thymine-starved cells are found to be the same. Photoreactivation by sequential flashes shows a lesser number of total photorepairable lesions in starved cells. It is concluded that thymine starvation renders a portion of the dimers inaccessible to the photoreactivating enzyme, thus lowering the level of maximum photoreactivation.  相似文献

A density-functional theory is presented to study the structure of polymers, having attractive interactions, confined between attractive surfaces. The theory treats the ideal-gas free-energy functional exactly and uses weighted density approximation for the hard-chain contribution to the excess free-energy functional. The bulk interactions of freely jointed hard spheres are obtained from generalized Flory equation of state and the attractive interactions are calculated using the direct correlation function obtained from the polymer reference interaction site model theory along with the mean spherical approximation closure. The theoretical predictions are found to be in quite good agreement with the Monte Carlo simulation results for varying densities, chain lengths, and different interaction potentials. The results confirm important implications of using different approximations for the hard-sphere and attractive interactions.  相似文献

The Bitcoin mining process is energy intensive, which can hamper the much-desired ecological balance. Given that the persistence of high levels of energy consumption of Bitcoin could have permanent policy implications, we examine the presence of long memory in the daily data of the Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (BECI) (BECI upper bound, BECI lower bound, and BECI average) covering the period 25 February 2017 to 25 January 2022. Employing fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) and multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MFDFA) models to estimate the order of fractional integrating parameter and compute the Hurst exponent, which measures long memory, this study shows that distant series observations are strongly autocorrelated and long memory exists in most cases, although mean-reversion is observed at the first difference of the data series. Such evidence for the profound presence of long memory suggests the suitability of applying permanent policies regarding the use of alternate energy for mining; otherwise, transitory policy would quickly become obsolete. We also suggest the replacement of ‘proof-of-work’ with ‘proof-of-space’ or ‘proof-of-stake’, although with a trade-off (possible security breach) to reduce the carbon footprint, the implementation of direct tax on mining volume, or the mandatory use of carbon credits to restrict the environmental damage.  相似文献
