Acetylene weak bands at 2.5 μm from intracavity Cr:ZnSe laser absorption observed with time-resolved Fourier transform spectroscopy

The spectral dynamics of a mid-infrared multimode Cr(2+):ZnSe laser located in a vacuum sealed chamber containing acetylene at low pressure is analyzed by a stepping-mode high-resolution time-resolved Fourier transform interferometer. Doppler-limited absorption spectra of C(2)H(2) in natural isotopic abundance are recorded around 4000 cm(-1) with kilometric absorption path lengths and sensitivities better than 3 10(-8) cm(-1). Two cold bands are newly identified and assigned to the ν(1)+ν(4) (1) and ν(3)+ν(5) (1) transitions of (12)C(13)CH(2). The ν(1)+ν(5) (1) band of (12)C(2)HD and fourteen (12)C(2)H(2) bands are observed, among which for the first time ν(2)+2ν(4) (2)+ν(5) (-1).     

Transverse displacement at total reflection near the grazing angle: a way to discriminate between theories

The transverse shift is observed and precisely measured at total internal reflection on a dielectric interface for a circularly polarized light beam when the incident angle is scanned from the critical angle up to the grazing angle close to 90°. The experimental results show with no doubt that the transverse displacement exists far away from the critical angle and only vanishes at grazing angle. A comparison with theories also allows a discrimination between the most different theoretical models traditionally used to interpret physically this effect.     

Proton-proton correlations at small relative momentum in neon-nucleus collisions at E/A=400 and 800 MeV

Proton-proton small angle correlations have been measured in neon-nucleus collisions, using the 4 pi detector Diogene, at 400 and 800 MeV per nucleon incident energies. Values of the size of the emitting region are obtained by comparison with the Koonin formula, taking into account the biases of the apparatus. The dependence of the density on target mass and incident energy is also analysed.     

An Alternative Method for Anomeric Deacetylation of Per-acetylated Carbohydrates

An alternative method for anomeric deacetylation of fully acetylated carbohydrates has been developed using imidazole in methanol.     

A New Asterosaponin from the Starfish Culcita novaeguineae

A new asterosaponin named novaeguinoside A, along with a known saponin, asteronyl pentaglycoside sulfate, was isolated from the starfish Culcita novaeguineae. The new compound was identitied to be sodium 6α-O-{β-D-fucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-fucopyranosyl-(1→4)-[β-D-quinovopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-[β-D-quinovopyranosyl}-5α-pregn-9(11)-en-20-one-3β-yl-sulfate by extensive spectral analysis and chemical evidence.     

Excimer-laser-assisted RF glow-discharge deposition of amorphous and microcrystalline silicon thin films

We combine the deposition of Hydrogenated amorphous Silicon (a-Si:H) by rf glow discharge with XeCl-excimer laser irradiation of the growing surface in order to obtain different kinds of silicon films in the same deposition system. In-situ UV-visible ellipsometry allows us to measure the optical properties of the films as the laser fluence is increased from 0 up to 180 mJ/cm² in separate depositions. For fixed glow-discharge conditions and a substrate temperature of 250° C we observe dramatic changes in the film structure as the laser fluence is increased. With respect to a reference a-Si:H film (no laser irradiation) we observe at low laser fluences (15–60 mJ/cm²) that the film remains amorphous but demonstrates enchanced surface roughness and bulk porosity. At intermediate fluences (80–165 m/Jcm²), we obtain an amorphous film with an enhanced density with respect to the reference film. Finally, at high fluences (165–180 mJ/cm²), we obtain microcrystalline films. The in-situ ellipsometry measurements are complemented by ex-situ measurements of the dark conductivity, X-ray diffraction, and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA). Simulation of the temperature profiles for different film thicknesses and for three laser fluences indicates that crystallization occurs if the surface temperature reaches the melting point of a-Si:H ( 1420 K). The effects of laser treatment on the film properties are discussed by taking into account the photonic and thermal effects of laser irradiation.Presented at LASERION 93, Munich, June 21–23, 1993     

Reactivite d'hydrocarbures methylenecyclo-hexaniques—I : Stereochimie de la reaction d'oxymercuration-demercuration

Methylenecyclohexanes, prepared in excellent yield by Corey and Chaykovsky then Cornforth reactions, give on oxymercuration followed by reductive demercuration tertiary alcohols resulting from axial attack by solvent. The attack takes place trans to the substiuent when the latter is at the 2 position. α-Hydroxy or methoxy compounds behave similarly to each other. For acetoxy compounds, the cis alcohols are obtained preferentially, by intramolecular attack of acetoxy group on the mercurinium ion intermediate. The results can be explained satisfactorily on the assumption that the factors inducing stereochemistry are short distance interactions.
