Lasting chemiluminescence of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride and its enhancement.

The chemiluminescence (CL) intensities of various indole derivatives substituted with a glyoxylyl group at the 3-position and a hydroxyl group at the 5-position of the indole ring were compared upon the addition of H2O2 in alkaline media. The CL intensities of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride, 3-indoleglyoxylic acid, 5-hydroxyindole and 5-benzyloxyindole in CH3CN were 5.9-, 48-, 5.9- and 3.3-fold stronger than that of 3-methylindole. A lasting CL of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was found. Under appropriate conditions, the CL emission reached a maximum within 10 min after the addition of H2O2 in the presence of NaOH, and the intensity was retained for 25 min. One of the final products via the CL reaction of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was indole-3-carboxylic acid. 3-Indoleglyoxylyl chloride emitted light by decompositions via both dioxetane and dioxetanedione. An enhancement effect of beta-cyclodextrin and bovine serum albumin on the CL of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was also found.     

Optical Glucose Monitoring Based on Femtosecond Two-Color Pulse Interferometry

We demonstrate the potential of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry for in vitro optical glucose monitoring, by dispersion of the group refractive index in a glucose solution sample with respect to a red-color light and a blue-color light. By comparison with femtosecond one-color pulse interferometry, the basic performance of the present system with regard to sensitivity, quantitativeness, and tolerance to surrounding disturbances, is evaluated. The resulting accuracy and precision of glucose determination are 77 and 118mg/dl for 10-mm-sample-thickness, respectively. This near-common-path configuration of the two-color pulse light provides good stability to fluctuations of sample temperature, which is important in clinical applications. Considering the performance of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry as an optical glucose sensor, a suitable measurement site for in vivo optical glucose monitoring is discussed.     

Structure and enantioselective synthesis of polyamine toxin MG30 from the venom of the spider Macrothele gigas

A novel polyamine toxin, named MG30, was isolated from the venom of the spider, Macrothele gigas, and its structure was elucidated by two-dimensional NMR and mass analysis. In addition, the enantioselective synthesis of MG30 was achieved to assign its absolute stereochemistry.     

Synthesis and orientation study of a magnetically aligned liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite

A high magnetic field of 5 T was used to fabricate a magnetically aligned, optically anisotropic, liquid‐crystalline chitin/poly(acrylic acid) composite. The aligned mesophase was fixed by photoinitiated free‐radical polymerization. From an examination of polarized optical micrographs and an X‐ray diffraction study, a high degree of orientation of 0.70 was observed for the composite with a higher liquid‐crystalline chitin concentration (10.70 wt %); the orientation was reduced with a decreased chitin concentration at a given acrylic acid concentration. The X‐ray data for the developed composite showed a uniplanar orientation for the chitin crystallites, with its molecular long axes perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of endogenous sperm-activating and attracting factor isolated from ascidian Ciona intestinalis

A chemoattractant candidate named sperm-activating and attracting factor (SAAF) from the eggs of ascidian Ciona intestinalis, was synthesized from chenodeoxycholic acid in 16 steps. The present synthesis led to the unambiguous structure determination of SAAF to be (3R,4R,7R,25S)-3,4,7,26-tetrahydroxycholestane-3,26-disulfate. The synthetic pure specimen was also used to confirm the dual sperm-activating and attracting activity.     

Enantioselective spiro ene-carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes catalyzed by tropos rhodium(I) complex with skewphos ligand

A tropos rhodium(I) complex having skewphos ligand is shown to be a highly enantioselective catalyst for asymmetric ene-type carbocyclization of 1,6-enynes with tri-substituted olefins to control quaternary stereogenic centers or spiro-rings.
