A new method for atmospheric nitrogen dioxide measurements using the combination of a stripping coil and fluorescence detection.

A new stripping coil for the collection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been developed to increase its versatility and efficiency. Nitrogen dioxide measurements based on quantitative collection through a reaction coil into an alkaline solution has been examined. Nitrogen dioxide is collected in a 0.1 N NaOH solution. This collection system has an efficiency of nearly 100%. The absorbed nitrogen dioxide has been measured by fluorescence detection with sub-ppbv detection limits. The excitation wavelength at 360 nm and the produced emission wavelength at 405 nm were suitable for nitrite ion measurements.     

Gelation with N-lauroyl-L-glutamic-α,γ-dibutylamide for liquid scintillation counting of low specific activities of35S and32P

A gelling agent, N-lauroyl-L-glutamic-,-dibutylamide, was applied for liquid scintillation counting of inorganic³²P and³⁵S. The gel with toluene cocktail is transparent and rigid for a long time. Several grams of ammonium magnesium phosphate or barium sulfate can easily be measured without complicating procedures.     

A comparison of supercritical carbon dioxide and organic solvents for the intercalation of 4-phenylazoaniline into a pillared clay mineral

The intercalation of 4-phenylazoaniline (PAA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO(2)) into montmorillonite (TMA-Mnt) pillared with tetramethylammonium ions at 313 K and 15 MPa was investigated. The adsorption rate and equilibrium PAA uptake were compared with those in n-hexane, CCl(4) and benzene solutions at 313 K. The XRD and N(2) adsorption/desorption analyses showed that TMA-Mnt after adsorption of PAA in SC-CO(2) had the same pore structure as after adsorption of PAA in normal solvents. SC-CO(2) was found to be a good medium for PAA adsorption owing to its having a relatively high adsorption rate and the highest adsorptivity at the same PAA concentration. The properties of PAA adsorption on TMA-Mnt could be well elucidated by the difference in solubility parameters between liquid and solid phases.     

Second-order nonlinear optical properties from poled silicate channel-waveguide

Thin film waveguides of germanosilicate glass are fabricated byrf-sputtering. Second-order nonlinearity ofd ₃₃=3.2 pm/V is obtained from electrically poled film, and the lifetime of the nonlinearity is found to be310 years. The poled channel-waveguide is prepared and the Cerenkov-type phase-matched frequency doubling is successfully observed.     

Pi-face-selective Diels-Alder reactions of 3,4-di-tert-butylthiophene 1-oxide and 1-imide and formation of 1,2-thiazetidines

3,4-Di-tert-butylthiophene 1-oxide (1a) reacted with a series of electron-deficient alkenic dienophiles at its syn-pi-face relating to the S=O bond to give [4+2] adducts in excellent yields. The 1-oxide 1a also reacted even with angle-strained dienophiles acenaphthylene and norbornene at its syn-pi-face to afford [4+2] adducts; in the latter case, norbornene reacted exclusively at its exo-pi-face. The oxide 1a reacted with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to produce dimethyl 4,5-di-tert-butylphthalate in high yield with spontaneous extrusion of SO from the initial adduct even at room temperature. Similarly, 3,4-di-tert-butylthiophene 1-(p-toluenesulfonyl)imide (3a) reacted with alkenic dienophiles at its syn-pi-face relating to the S=N bond to give [4+2] adducts in good yields. The reaction of 3a with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) afforded a 1,2-thiazetidine 12a, the first example of S-unoxidized 1,2-thiazetidine, in good yield, through rearrangement of the initial [4+2] adduct. The molecular structure of 12a is discussed on the basis of the X-ray crystallographic analysis. Comparison of the foregoing reactions leads to the conclusion that the 1-oxide 1a is more reactive as a diene than the 1-imide 3a, which is more reactive than 3,4-di-tert-butylthiophene 1,1-dioxide. The origin of the syn-pi-face selectivities of 1a and 3a in Diels-Alder reactions is discussed in terms of the orbital mixing rule and steric effect and also based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations.     

Photophysical and (photo)electrochemical properties of a coumarin dye

A new coumarin dye, cyano-{5,5-dimethyl-3-[2-(1,1,6,6-tetramethyl-10-oxo-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-1H,4H,10H-11-oxa-3a-aza-benzo[de]anthracen-9-yl)vinyl]cyclohex-2-enylidene}-acetic acid (NKX-2753), was prepared and characterized with respect to photophysical and electrochemical properties. It was employed as a dye sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells and showed efficient photon-to-electron conversion properties. The photocurrent action spectrum exhibited a broad feature with a maximum incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 84% at 540 nm, which is comparable to that for the famous red dye RuL2(NCS)2 (known as N3), where L stands for 2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid. The sandwich-type solar cell with NKX-2753, under illumination of full sun (AM1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)), produced 16.1 mA cm(-2) of short-circuit photocurrent, 0.60 V of open-circuit photovoltage, and 0.69 of fill factor, corresponding to 6.7% of overall energy conversion efficiency using 0.1 M LiI, 0.05 M I2, 0.1 M guanidinium thiocyanate, and 0.6 M 1,2-dimethyl-3-n-propyl-imidazolium iodide in dry acetonitrile as redox electrolyte. In comparison with its analogue NKX-2586 (Langmuir 2004, 20, 4205), NKX-2753 with an extra side ring on the alkene chain produced much higher IPCE values at the same conditions. The side ring acted as a spacer to efficiently prevent dye aggregation when adsorbed on the TiO2 surface, resulting in significant improvements of short-circuit photocurrent, open-circuit photovoltage, and fill factor compared with NKX-2586 that aggregated on the TiO2 surface.     

Substituent effects in the mass spectral fragmentation of aryl esters

The mass spectra of m- and p-substituted phenyl acetates, phenyl propionates, phenyl chloroacetates and phenyl fluoroacetates have been determined. The fragmentation of aryl esters is affected by acyl substituents as well as by aryl substituents. Esters having acyl groups of low ionization potential show greater changes in fragmentation because of aryl substituents than those having acyl groups of high ionization potential. Each series has a fairly definite crossover point where fragmentation changes from predominant rearrangement to predominant cleavage.
