A detailed investigation of addition–fragmentation chain transfer (AFCT) in the free‐radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of methyl α‐(bromomethyl)acrylate (MBMA) was carried out to elucidate mechanistic details with efficient macromonomer synthesis as an underlying goal. Advanced modeling techniques were used in connection with the experimental work. Curve fitting of simulated and experimental molecular weight distributions with respect to the rate coefficient for addition of propagating radicals to MBMA (kadd) over 60–120 °C resulted in Eadd = 21.7 kJ mol?1 and Aadd = 2.18 × 106 M?1 s?1 and a very weak temperature dependence of the chain‐transfer constant (Eadd ≈ Ep). The rate coefficient for fragmentation of adduct radicals at 60 °C was estimated as kf ≈ 39 s?1 on the basis of experimental data of the MMA conversion and the concentration of 2‐carbomethoxy‐2‐propenyl end groups. The approach developed is generic and can be applied to any AFCT system in which copolymerization does not occur and in which the resulting unsaturated end groups do not undergo further reactions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An investigation was made of the gelation of dimethacrylate‐type crosslinking agents in view of an application for separation media. The study mainly centered on a crosslinking agent, glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA), which is relatively hydrophilic because of a hydroxyl group in the middle of its structure. The gelation of GDMA was compared with that of other hydrophobic crosslinking agents such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 1,6‐hexanediol dimethacrylate. The diluents used in the study were toluene, toluene with methanol, and cyclohexanol. The gelation was observed in real time with a charge coupled device camera and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Also, the separated dry gels were extensively characterized with scanning electron microscopy, BET (N2 absorption and desorption isotherm), and Fourier transform infrared. DLS analysis showed a stronger molecular interaction of GDMA gelation in toluene, whereas this interaction was much weaker in an alcoholic solvent such as toluene with methanol or cyclohexanol. This indicated that GDMA gelation might proceed through hydrogen bonding as well as a crosslinking reaction of vinyl groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal properties of the rare-earth chelates of Htfa (trifluoroacetylacetone) and Hhfa (hexafluoroacetylacetone) have been investigated. Thermogravimetric curves were obtained by heating samples in the injection chamber of a gas chromatograph, both in an atmosphere of helium, and of helium containing ligand vapour. None of the chelates was completely vaporized in a helium atmosphere at temperatures up to about 240 degrees , but the tfa chelate of Lu and all the hfa chelates were completely vaporized in the atmosphere of helium containing ligand vapour. The vapour pressures and heats of vaporization of these chelates were also measured. 相似文献

We have developed a scanning near-field optical microscope with an optically trapped metallic particle that has a small diameter compared to the wavelength of visible light. In this microscope we employed spot illumination to enhance the intensity of light scattered from a probe particle so we could reduce the diameter of the probe particle to 40nm. We detected slight irregularities of the surface of the cover glass near 10-nm depth. Also, we observed gold colloidal particles on the surface of the cover glass. 相似文献

A frequency comb spanning more than one octave has been achieved by injecting the second-harmonic generation (780 nm) of a mode-locked fiber laser (1.56 microm) into a photonic crystal fiber. We propose and realize a novel interferometric scheme for observing the carrier-envelope offset frequency of the frequency comb. Frequency noise has been observed on the measured carrier-envelope offset frequency, which has been confirmed to be generated in the photonic crystal fiber by comparing the measured beat frequencies between cw lasers and frequency combs before and after the photonic crystal fiber. The mode-locked fiber laser is considered to be an important candidate for the light source used in realizing a compact optical frequency measurement system including applications in the telecommunication bands. 相似文献

Based on the recently proposed SUSY quantum Hall effect, we show that Laughlin and Moore-Read states are related by a hidden SUSY transformation. Regarding the SUSY Laughlin wavefunction as a master wavefunction, Laughlin and Moore-Read states appear as two extreme limits of component wavefunctions. Realizations of topological excitations on Laughlin and Moore-Read states are also discussed in the SUSY formalism. We develop a stereographically projected formulation of the SUSY quantum Hall effect. With appropriate interpretation of Grassmann odd coordinates, we illustrate striking analogies between SUSY quantum Hall effect and superfluidity. 相似文献

In this paper, we describe an induced signal measurement on the human body for developing a high-performance transceiver of an intra-body communication system. It is important to isolate awearable transceiver from an electrical instrument for precise measurement. We have developed a probe system using an optical isolation method including a laser diode, photo-diode, and optical fiber. The probe system can be successfully applied to the precise measurement of a receiving signal power at a wearable transceiver. We verify that the experimental results agree with the simulation results based on our previous channel model of intra-body communication. 相似文献

The compression curve of BaBiO3 was measured by X-ray diffraction method using a diamond anvil cell apparatus up to about 8 GPa. The diffraction pattern did not change in this pressure range, but the bulk modulus suddenly decreased near 4 GPa.
