Synthesis of a Masked p -Quinone Methide β -Lactam as an active metabolite of nocardicins

Nocardicin A analogues 30, 34 , and 38 as well as the highly strained quinone methide 43 were synthesized. β -Lactam 34 was found biologically active against several Gram-negative microorganisms in vitro; pyridinium N-oxide derivative 38 possessed activity against Gram-positive S. aureus bacterium. Masked p-quinone methide β -lactam 43 exhibited significant antimicrobial activity in vitro. A mechanism involving an oxidation in vivo is proposed for the unprecedented biological properties of nocardicins.     

Syntheses of Novel Isopenam and Isocephem Antibiotics. Preparation of a retinamido derivative of a highly strained β-lactam as potent anticancer agent

Syntheses of the cis-configurated isopenam 9 (Scheme 1), isocephem 14 (Scheme 2), and isocephem 19 (Scheme 3) are described. The key step in the preparation of 14 and 19 involved a Pummerer-type rearrangement of the corresponding sulfoxides 12 and 18 . These β-lactams were found to possess biological activity against several pathogenic microorganisms in vitro. The electronic activation of the lactam moiety of 19 remarkably enhanced its biological activity. A retinoic moiety was attached to 19 via an amino linker. The resultant retinamido-β-lactam 21 showed significant cytostatic activity in tracheal organ cultures obtained from vitamin-A-deficient hamsters.     

Upgrade of beamline BL08B at Taiwan Light Source from a photon‐BPM to a double‐grating SGM beamline

During the last 20 years, beamline BL08B has been upgraded step by step from a photon beam‐position monitor (BPM) to a testing beamline and a single‐grating beamline that enables experiments to record X‐ray photo‐emission spectra (XPS) and X‐ray absorption spectra (XAS) for research in solar physics, organic semiconductor materials and spinel oxides, with soft X‐ray photon energies in the range 300–1000 eV. Demands for photon energy to extend to the extreme ultraviolet region for applications in nano‐fabrication and topological thin films are increasing. The basic spherical‐grating monochromator beamline was again upgraded by adding a second grating that delivers photons of energy from 80 to 420 eV. Four end‐stations were designed for experiments with XPS, XAS, interstellar photoprocess systems (IPS) and extreme‐ultraviolet lithography (EUVL) in the scheduled beam time. The data from these experiments show a large count rate in core levels probed and excellent statistics on background normalization in the L‐edge adsorption spectrum.     

Structural Studies and Anticancer Activity of a Novel Class of β‐Peptides

Functionalized oligomeric organic compounds with well‐defined β‐proline scaffold have been synthesized by a cycloadditive oligomerization approach in racemic and enantiopure forms. The structure of the novel β‐peptides was investigated by NMR spectroscopic and X‐ray methods determining the conformational shapes of the β‐proline oligomers in solution and solid states. The main structural elements subject to conformational switches are β‐peptide bonds between 5‐arylpyrrolidine‐2‐carboxylic acid units existing in Z/E configurations. The whole library of short β‐peptides and intermediate acrylamides has been tested on antiproliferative activity towards the hormone‐refractory prostate cancer cell line PC‐3 revealing several oligomeric compounds with low micromolar and submicromolar activities. Bromine‐substituted dimeric and trimeric acrylamides induced caspase‐dependent apoptosis of PC‐3 cells through cell‐cycle arrest and mitochondrial damage.     

Cytotoxic Constituents from the Stem Bark of Zanthoxylum Pistaciiflorum

Two new esters, methyl 4‐(prenyloxy)dihydrocinnamate and methyl 4‐(geranyloxy)dihydrocinnamate, together with fourteen known compounds have been isolated from the stem bark of Zanthoxylum pistaciiflorum. The structures of two new compounds were determined through spectral analyses. Among the isolates, four compounds exhibited effective cytotoxicities against P‐388 and HT‐29 cell lines in vitro.     

New benzo[b]furans as electroluminescent materials for emitting blue light

[structure: see text] New functionalized mono- and bis-benzo[b]furan derivatives were synthesized and developed as blue-light emitting materials. They possessed a CN, CHO, CH=CHPh, CH=CPh(2), or CH=CHCOOH group at the C4-position. Two benzo[b]furan nuclei in bis-benzo[b]furan derivatives were connected by a divinylbenzene bridge. With good volatility and thermal stability, bis-benzo[b]furan 7a was fabricated as a device. It emitted blue light with brightness 53430 cd/m(2) (at 15.5 V) and high maximum external quantum efficiency 3.75% (at 11 V).     

Efficient Synthesis of Substituted Indene Derivatives

An efficient protocol for the synthesis of new functionalized indenes 3 was successfully realized. Thus the coupling reaction of allyl acetate 2 with Grignard reagents in the presence of a catalytic amount of LiCuBr₂ at low temperature afforded pure ethyl 1-alkyl-1H-indenes-2-carboxylate 3 in good yields.
