Synthesis and characterization of alt‐bipyridinylene‐phenylene copolymers containing ruthenium(II) complexes

Poly{bis(4,4′‐tert‐butyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine)–(2,2′‐bipyridine‐5,5′‐diyl‐[1,4‐phenylene])–ruthenium(II)bishexafluorophosphate} ( 3a ), poly{bis(4,4′‐tert‐butyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine)–(2,2′‐bipyridine‐4,4′‐diyl‐[1,4‐phenylene])–ruthenium(II)bishexafluorophosphate} ( 3b ), and poly{bis(2,2′‐bipyridine)–(2,2′‐bipyridine‐5,5′‐diyl‐[1,4‐phenylene])–ruthenium(II)bishexafluorophosphate} ( 3c ) were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. The alternating structure of the copolymers was confirmed by ¹H and ¹³C NMR and elemental analysis. The polymers showed, by ultraviolet–visible, the π–π* absorption of the polymer backbone (320–380 nm) and at a lower energy attributed to the d–π* metal‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer absorption (450 nm for linear 3a and 480 nm for angular 3b ). The polymers were characterized by a monomodal molecular weight distribution. The degree of polymerization was approximately 8 for polymer 3b and 28 for polymer 3d . © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Design and synthesis of Ru(II-bipyridyl-containing conjugated polymers

A series of novel π-conjugated polymers containing ruthenium bipyridine complexes was synthesized by a cross-coupling reaction and characterized. These polymers exhibit absorption maxima around 330–350 nm (π-π*) and 460–500 nm metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), respectively. They are soluble in common organic solvents, and all polymers can be converted into transparent films. We investigated the influence of different donating and acceptor diethynylarenes of the ultraviolet-visible spectra. The oxidation potential, which was measured by cyclic- and square-wave voltametry, showed a typical Ru^2+/3+ exhibited at 1.25 V versus the saturated calomel electrode. The polymers were further characterized with photoluminescence measurements. When excited at 442 nm ( 11a ), the polymer exhibited an emission peak at 690 nm. Polygermoxanes suitable for biochemical purposes. Part I. Digermoxanes (low-viscosity oils)

In order to replace silicones in some of their biomedical applications, e.g. syringe lubrication, implants ets., a series of digermoxanes (R¹R²R³Ge)₂O (R = n–alkyl, aryl) were synthesized. These compounds are thermally stable oils; their viscosities, depending on the nature of substituents, lie in the range 1–72 cPo (mPa s) at 20°C.     

Silylation partielle et réduction de composés gem-polychlorés fonctionnels

The trimethylchlorosilane/magnesium/hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPT) system reacts with some functional polychlorinated compounds (chloral, hexachloroacetone, acetone chloroform) affording a partial reduction accompanied by silylation and leads to new functional silylated derivatives.These reactions exhibit reductive properties of magnesium, in HMPT, towards the CCl bond.     

Ethylenic compounds reactivity: bromination—XLI: Relative reactivities of R1CMeCH2 and R1CHCMe2 series as a criterion for distinguishing between bridged and acyclic transition states. Degree of symmetry of the bromonium ion-like transition state

Reactivities of homogeneous series of ethylenic compounds R¹CHCH₂1, trans R¹CHCHMe 2, R¹MeCCH₂3 and R¹CHCMe₂4 have been measured in methanol at 25°C (R¹ Me, Et, n-Pr, -CH₂C₆H₅-CH₂OCOCH₃, -CH₂Cl). The criterion developed to decide between a bridged and a carbonium ion-like transition state is based on an internal comparison of the series and avoids resorting to external structural scales. Even in the case of alkenes 3 and 4 which are very dissymmetric with respect to polarity, the sensitivity to polar effects remains constant and the transition state behaves like a symmetric entity; only a slight secondary effect, attributed to hyperconjugation, is detectable.     

Zur Bestimmung der Sulfit- und Thiosulfationen nebeneinander

Zusammenfassung Zur Bestimmung von Sulfit und Thiosulfat nebeneinander wird folgendes Verfahren beischrieben: In einem aliquoten Teil der zu untersuchenden Lösung wird mit elementarem Jod oxydiert, wobei die Sulfitionen zwei Äquivalente, die Thiosulfationen ein Äquivalent Jod je Mol verbrauchen. In einem zweiten aliquoten Teil der zu untersuchenden Lösung werden die Ionen mit — aus KBrO₃ + KBr hergestelltem — NaOBr oxydiert; die Sulfitionen verbrauchen dabei zwei Äquivalente, die Thiosulfationen acht Äquivalente Brom je Mol.     

A Preparatively Simple Access to Homochiral Heterocyclic α-Hydroxy Acids and their Derivatives

 The synthesis of homochiral heterocyclic α-hydroxy acids starting from (S)- and (R)-malic acid using hexafluoroacetone as protecting and activating agent is described. The new compounds are useful building blocks for peptide and depsipeptide modification.     

Negative electrorheological responses of micro-polar fluids in the finite spin viscosity small spin velocity limit. I. Couette flow geometries

Negative electrorheological responses induced by micro-particle electrorotation in two-dimensional Couette flow geometries are analyzed by a set of continuum modeling field equations originating from anti-symmetric/couple stress theories in the finite spin viscosity small spin velocity (FSV) limit. Analytical solutions are obtained for the first time to express the spin velocity, linear velocity, and effective viscosity in terms of the electric field strength, driving shear rate, boundary condition selection parameter, and spin viscosity. Good agreement is achieved between the FSV theoretical predictions presented herein and the experimental measurements reported in recent literature for the effective viscosity for low driving shear rates.     

Subpicosecond pulse generation from a 1.56 μm mode-locked VECSEL

Near-transform-limited subpicosecond pulses at 1.56 μm were generated from an optically pumped InP-based vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) passively mode-locked at 2 GHz repetition rate with a fast InGaAsNSb/GaAs semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The SESAM microcavity resonance was adjusted via a selective etching of phase layers specifically designed to control the magnitude of both the modulation depth and the intracavity group delay dispersion of the SESAM. Using the same VECSEL chip, we observed that the mode-locked pulse duration could be reduced from several picoseconds to less than 1 ps with a detuned resonant SESAM.
