The structures formed by inclusions in smectic C (SmC) free-standing films are investigated using polarized light microscopy. The domains confined in these two-dimensional (2D) systems induce distortion of the inplane orientational order, which governs the elastic interaction between the inclusions. The balance between long-range quadrupolar attraction and short-range repulsion gives rise to a nontrivial collective behavior of domains. Various 2D structures are created as a function of the concentration and size of inclusions. We observe the formation of chains and then a 2D square lattice when the concentration of domains increases. Further increase in the domain size leads to the transition from square to hexagonal close-packed structure. 相似文献

Experimental data on the optical reflectance of free-standing smectic C films were analyzed within the framework of a phenomenological Landau approach. At a certain temperature T 0N (determined from experimental data), which exceeds the known temperature T c of the volume phase transition from smectic A to smectic C state, a surface phase transition takes place whereby molecules in the surface layer become sloped relative to the normal of the smectic layers. The transition temperatures T 0N s,a for N-layer films possessing synclinic (symmetric) and anticlinic (antisymmetric) textures of the order parameter (tilt angle θ) were determined. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental data allowed all parameters of the model to be determined (including critical indices of the correlation length and the surface order parameter). Three possible models of the transition from the state with transverse polarization (perpendicular to the molecular tilt plane) to the state with longitudinal polarization (parallel to this plane) are analyzed. The transition takes place at low (°–°) values of the order parameter θ in the middle layer of the film. 相似文献

Highly sensitive optical reflectivity measurements are used to investigate the layer-by-layer transition in extremely thin
and thick N-(4-n-hexyloxybenzylidene)-4-n-hexylaniline (6O.6) films. The simple power-law form, N=N
0
t
−1/3, for the penetration of the crystal-B order is found to describe the transitions only near the surface. A deviation from
the power law is observed for the interior layers.

The unwinding of a helical structure in thin films of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal (LC) by an external electric field has been theoretically studied using a discrete model in which every LC layer is characterized by a two-dimensional vector ξ i (describing the orientation of molecules) and by the polarization P i . It is established that the unwinding of the LC helix in thin films significantly differs from the well-known behavior of thick samples. In particular, discrete intermediate states (differing by an integer or half-integer number of turns) are formed in thin films for both weak and strong anchoring of molecules to a substrate surface. The physical factor responsible for this behavior is the presence of near-surface regions with thicknesses below the helix pitch and the corresponding uncompensated polarization. 相似文献

Structural reorganization of polyamide (PA) and low-molecular-weight CuI and CuII complexes with biquinolyl (biQ) ligands during their mutual redox transformations in solution was studied using the electrochemical
methods (cyclic voltammetry and preparative electrolysis) and quantum chemical DFT calculations. The influence of electronic
factors and geometry distortions in the complexes on the ionization energy on going from CuI to CuII was evaluated in comparison. The catalytically active form of the [CuI(PA)L2]BF4 complex can be synthesized in situ from the stable tetrahedral complex [CuI(PA)2]BF4 by the series of successive redox transitions CuI → CuII → CuI accompanied by the loss of one biQ-containing macroligand.

We report a detailed ellipsometric study of freely suspended films of chiral liquid-crystal compounds possessing smectic-A
and smectic-C phases. In the temperature region between the smectic-A - smectic-C bulk and surface transitions, a discontinuous
reconstruction of the tilt profile across the film is observed in the presence of a constant d.c. electric field. Comparison
of the measured ellipsometric quantities with values calculated from model tilt profiles reveals a competition between a structure
possessing a homogeneous tilt direction and large ferroelectric polarization and a structure with opposite tilt direction
in the two film halfs and large flexoelectric polarization.
