The effect of calcium carbonate coatings on the reduction of aqueous chromate on the magnetite(1 1 1) surface has been investigated using a combination of synchrotron based X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, along with laboratory-based powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). CaCO3 coatings (dominantly calcite with minor quantities of aragonite and vaterite) of thicknesses ranging from 10 Å to 20 m were grown on magnetite(1 1 1) surfaces by exposure to supersaturated aqueous solutions followed by evaporation of the solution—a process that mimics pore-water evaporation in vadose zones leading to the formation of caliche and calcium carbonate coatings on mineral grains. Coating thicknesses were determined from attenuation of the Fe 2p photoemission signal by the carbonate coating. For coatings less than 15 Å thick, Cr 2p photoemission and Cr LII, LIII-edge XANES spectra show that chromate is reduced by the underlying magnetite surface; however, as the minimum coating thickness increases beyond 15 Å, the magnetite surface becomes passivated and further chromate reduction ceases. Our findings suggest that carbonate coatings on natural magnetite grains can significantly reduce or eliminate their ability to reduce Cr(VI), which is a toxic and highly mobile environmental contaminant.  相似文献

We report a microchip-based detection scheme to determine the diffusion coefficient and molecular mass (to the extent correlated to molecular size) of analytes of interest. The device works by simultaneously measuring the refractive index gradient (RIG) between adjacent laminar flows at two different positions along a microchannel. The device, referred to as a microscale molecular mass sensor (micro-MMS), takes advantage of laminar flow conditions where the mixing of two streams occurs essentially by diffusion across the boundary between the two streams. Two flows merge on the microchip, one containing solvent only, referred to as the mobile phase stream and one which contains the analyte(s) of interest in the solvent, i.e. the sample stream. As these two streams merge and flow parallel to each other down the microchannel a RIG is created by the concentration gradient. The RIG is further influenced by analyte diffusion from the sample stream into the mobile phase stream. Measuring the RIG at a position close to the merging point (upstream signal) and simultaneously a selected distance further down the microchannel (downstream signal) provides real-time data related to the extent a given analyte has diffused, which can be readily correlated to analyte molecular mass by taking the ratio of the downstream-to-upstream signals. For the dual-beam RIG measurements, a diode laser output is coupled to a single mode fiber optic splitter with two output fibers. Light from each fiber passes through a graded refractive index (GRIN) lens forming a collimated beam that then passes through the microchannel and then on to a position sensitive detector (PSD). The RIG at both detection positions deflects the two collimated probe beams. The deflection angle of each beam is then measured on two separate PSDs. The micro-MMS was evaluated using polyethylene glycols (PEGs), sugars, and as a detector for size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Peak purity can be readily identified using the micro-MMS with SEC. The limit of detection was 0.9 ppm (PEG at 11 840 g/mol) at the upstream detection position corresponding to a RI limit of detection (LOD) (3sigma) of 7-10(-8) RI. The pathlength for the RIG measurement was 200 microm and the angular LOD was 0.23 micro(rad) with a detection volume of 8 nl at both positions. The average molecular mass resolution was 9% (relative standard deviation) for a series of PEGs ranging in molecular mass from 106 to 22 800 g/mol. With this excellent mass resolution, small molecules such as monosaccharides, disaccharides, and so on, are readily distinguished. The sensor is demonstrated to readily determine unknown diffusion coefficients.  相似文献

Cerium(III) ions in dilute sulphuric acid medium exhibit a characteristic fluorescence which has its excitation maximum at 260 nm and its fluorescence emission maximum at 350 nm. By utilising the osmium-catalysed redox reaction between cerium(IV) and arsenic(III), microgram amounts of arsenic (7.5–37.5 μg) may be determined by spectrofluorimetric measurement of the ceriurm(III) produced. The principle may be applied to the determination of several other ions which cannot yet be determined by direct spectrofluorimetry, e.g.. Fe(II) (5.6–28 μg), oxalate (8.8–44μg). Osmium(VIII) (0.05–0.2 μg) and iodide (0.6–2.5 μg) may be determined by their catalytic action.  相似文献

Curcumin, bis (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-l,6-diene-3,5-dione, is a yellow-orange dye derived from the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa. Curcumin has demonstrated phototoxicity to several species of bacteria under aerobic conditions (Dahl, T. A., et al. , 1989, Arch. Microbiol. 151 183), denoting photodynamic inactivation. We have now found that curcumin is also phototoxic to mammalian cells, using a rat basophilic leukemia cell model, and that this phototoxicity again requires the presence of oxygen. The spectral and photochemical properties of curcumin vary with environment, resulting in the potential for multiple or alternate pathways for the exertion of photodynamic effects. For example, curcumin photogenerates singlet oxygen and reduced forms of molecular oxygen under several conditions relevant to cellular environments. In addition, we detected carbon-centered radicals, which may lead to oxidation products (see accompanying paper). Such products may be important reactants in curcumin's phototoxicity since singlet oxygen and reduced oxygen species alone could not explain the biological results, such as the relatively long lifetime (t12= 27 s) of the toxicant responsible for decreased cell viability.  相似文献
