Imidazole-based excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer materials: synthesis and amplified spontaneous emission from a large single crystal

We have synthesized a novel class of imidazole-based excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) materials, i.e., hydroxy-substituted tetraphenylimidazole (HPI) and its derivative HPI-Ac, which formed large single crystals exhibiting intense blue fluorescence and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Transparent, clear, and well-defined fluorescent single crystals of HPI-Ac as large as 20 mm x 25 mm x 5 mm were easily grown from its dilute solution. From the X-ray crystallographic analysis and semiempirical molecular orbital calculation, it was deduced that the four phenyl groups substituted into the imidazole ring of HPI and HPI-Ac allowed the crystals free from concentration quenching of fluorescence by limiting the excessive tight-stacking responsible for intermolecular vibrational coupling and relevant nonradiative relaxation. Fluorescence spectral narrowing and efficient ASE were observed in the HPI-Ac single crystal even at low excitation levels attributed to the intrinsic four-level ESIPT photocycle.     

Leader-following consensus criteria for multi-agent systems with time-varying delays and switching interconnection topologies

We consider multi-agent systems with time-varying delays and switching interconnection topologies.By constructing a suitable Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and using the reciprocally convex approach,new delay-dependent consensus criteria for the systems are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities(LMIs),which can be easily solved by using various effective optimization algorithms.Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.     

Self‐formed Schottky barrier induced selector‐less RRAM for cross‐point memory applications

We propose a selector‐less Pr_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ (PCMO) based resistive‐switching RAM (RRAM) for high‐density cross‐point memory array applications. First, we investigate the inhomogeneous barrier with an effective barrier height (Φ_eff), i.e., self‐formed Schottky barrier. In addition, a scalable 4F² selector‐less cross‐point 1 kb RRAM array has been successfully fabricated, demonstrating set, reset, and read operation for high cell efficiency and high‐density memory applications. Identifying the structure of group correlation in the Korean financial market

We investigate the structure of the cross-correlation in the Korean stock market. We analyze daily cross-correlations between price fluctuations of 586 different Korean stock entities for the 6-year time period from 2003 to 2008. The main purpose is to investigate the structure of group correlation and its stability by undressing the market-wide effect using the Markowitz multi-factor model and the network-based approach. We find the explicit list of significant firms in the few largest eigenvectors from the undressed correlation matrix. We also observe that each contributor is involved in the same business sectors. The structure of group correlation can not remain constant during each 1-year time period with different starting points, whereas only two largest eigenvectors are stable for 6 years 8-9 eigenvectors remain stable for half-year. The structure of group correlation in the Korean financial market is disturbed during a sufficiently short time period even though the group correlation exists as an ensemble for the 6-year time period in the evolution of the system. We verify the structure of group correlation by applying a network-based approach. In addition, we examine relations between market capitalization and businesses. The Korean stock market shows a different behavior compared to mature markets, implying that the KOSPI is a target for short-positioned investors.

Understanding the junction degradation mechanism in CdS/CdTe solar cells using a Cd-deficient CdTe layer

It is known that CdTe solar cells are often degraded under solar illumination. But the degradation mechanism is not fully proved because it does not appear consistently. The junction degradation in CdS/CdTe solar cells was investigated using a CdTe layer with Cd deficient composition, where Cd vacancy concentration is high. It was found that the Cu atoms easily filled the Cd vacancies in CdTe and transport to junction area from Cu back contact. PL measurement and spectral quantum efficiency measurement showed that the incorporation of Cu atoms in CdS forms a defect energy level at 1.55 eV below the conduction band in CdS. As a result, the junction built-in potential is decreased and light penetration into CdTe absorber is shielded. For reliable and stable CdTe cells, the formation of Cd vacancy in CdTe should be avoided by careful control of CdTe.
