Samuelson maps—recent results

Samuelson maps are maps whose Jacobian matrix has nowhere vanishing leading principal minors. This paper surveys some recent results on invertibility of Samuelson maps and their decomposition into maps that fix all but one coordinate. The most noteworthy result is that real, rational, everywhere defined Samuelson maps are invertible. Proofs are sketched or omitted entirely.     

Chirospecific Syntheses of Conformationally Constrained 7-Azabicycloheptane Amino Acids by Transannular Alkylation

A new method is reported for the chirospecific preparation of optically pure 1-carboxy-7-azabicycloheptane amino acids for the generation of peptidomimetics as conformational probes. The method allows for the multigram preparation of these amino acid analogues through use of a thiolactam sulfide contraction and a transannular alkylation sequence as the key C-C bond-forming steps, starting from L-glutamic acid. The route provides access to two common intermediates, 7-(benzyloxycarbonyl)-1-carboxy-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]-3-heptane and (1S,4R)-7-(benzyloxycarbonyl)-1-carboxy-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]-3-heptanone tert-butyl ester, for elaboration to symmetrical and chiral amino acid homologues, respectively. Decarboxylation of the C-1 carboxy unit of the latter intermediate also demonstrated the applicability of the method for a short, chirospecific preparation of a (+)-epibatidine intermediate, (1S,4R)-7-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)-1-carboxy-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]-3-heptanone.     

Energy dependence of SF6 dissociation by pulsed CO2 laser radiation

The fractional dissociation,³²Γ, of ³²SF₆ by the output of a pulsed TEA CO₂ laser has been found to depend upon Φ, the total integrated laser intensity, as ³²Γ ∞ Φ^m for both the P(20) and P(16) laser lines, where m ≈ 3 in the range 2 < Φ < 7.2 J/cm² and increases from 3 to ≈ 4 as Φ is reduced from 2 to 0.9 J/cm².     

Catalysts for the determination of oxygen in organic compounds

Summary Thermal decomposition of metal-organic complexes of nickel, cobalt and iron has given catalysts which are very effective at about 900° for the conversion of carbon dioxide, water and other oxygencontaining sample decomposition products to carbon monoxide in the direct determination of oxygen in organic compounds when using a modified Unterzaucher type apparatus. A copper catalyst similarly prepared required a temperature of 1030° whereas a manganese complex decomposition product was ineffective.

Katalysatoren zur Sauerstoffbestimmung in organischen Substanzen

Zusammenfassung Durch thermische Zersetzung metallorganischer Komplexe von Ni, Co und Fe erhält man Katalysatoren, die die Umwandlung von CO₂, H₂O und anderen sauerstoffhältigen Zerfallsprodukten zu CO bei etwa 900° C bei der direkten Sauerstoffbestimmung in einer modifizierten Unterzaucher-Apparatur sehr wirksam fördern. Ein ähnlich hergestellter Cu-Katalysator erfordert 1030° C und das Zersetzungsprodukt eines Mn-Komplexes ist unwirksam.

     

Monitoring trace anion contamination in disk drive components

Ion chromatography was used to determine trace anionic contamination on the surface of hard disk drive components. These contaminants can have a detrimental effect on device reliability and yield. Disk drive components were soaked in deionized water and these extracts were analyzed for anions. The anions fluoride, acetate, formate, acrylate, methacrylate, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, benzoate, sulfate, oxalate, phthalate and phosphate were separated on a high-performance anion-exchange column and determined at concentrations less than 1 microg/l with suppressed conductivity detection. The extract solutions were analyzed either by injecting 1 ml or by preconcentrating 5 ml. We evaluated the performance of both methods.     

Evaluation of electric hyperfine interactions inAuFe andCrFe

A detailed analysis of room temperature⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectra ofAuFe (5 at.% Fe) andCrFe (5, 10 at.% Fe) samples is presented. The deviation from Lorentzian line shape observed in the spectra indicates both thickness effects and structural disorder in these systems. The thickness effect has been taken into account using a new fitting technique that solves the transmission integral numerically rather than relying on the thin absorber approximation. The present results and analyses using both the thin absorber approximation and the full transmission integral methods on these alloy systems are compared with earlier results obtained on these alloy systems using only the thin absorber approximation.     

Microanalysis of unusual compounds. I Weighing hygroscopic samples

Summary A method is described for the construction of aluminium foil capsules in which hygroscopic samples may be dried to constant weight for combustion analysis.
