As a first step towards computing instanton-generated superpotentials in heterotic standard model vacua, we determine the Gromov–Witten invariants for a Calabi–Yau threefold with fundamental group π1(X)=Z3×Z3π1(X)=Z3×Z3. We find that the curves fall into homology classes in H2(X,Z)=Z3⊕(Z3⊕Z3)H2(X,Z)=Z3(Z3Z3). The unexpected appearance of the finite torsion subgroup in the homology group complicates our analysis. However, we succeed in computing the complete genus-0 prepotential. Expanding it as a power series, the number of instantons in any integral homology class can be read off. This is the first explicit calculation of the Gromov–Witten invariants of homology classes with torsion. We find that some curve classes contain only a single instanton. This ensures that the contribution to the superpotential from each such instanton cannot cancel.  相似文献

Theoretical and applied research has shown that the pressure at a point in the subsurface soil is a function of both the surface unit pressure and the extent of the area over which it is applied (total load). Thirty years ago, most of the soil compaction from vehicle traffic was in the plow layer and was removed by normal cultural practices. As equipment has increased in size and mass, machine designers have increased tire sizes to keep the soil surface unit pressure relatively constant. However, the increase in total axle loads is believed to have caused an increase in compaction at any given depth in the soil profile, resulting in significant compaction in the subsoil.Two tires of different sizes, a standard agricultural tire and a flotation tire were used to support equal loads. Soil pressures were measured at three depths in the soil profile directly beneath each of the tires. Two soils were used and each was prepared first in a uniform density profile, and then they were prepared with a simulated traffic pan (layer of higher density) at a depth of approximately 30 cm.Results showed that the presence of a traffic pan in the soil profile caused higher soil pressures above the pan and lower pressures below it than was the case for a uniform soil profile. The soil contact surface of the flotation tire was approximately 22% greater than the agricultural tire. The greater contact surface did reduce soil pressures at the soil surface, of course, but the total axle load was still the dominant factor in the 18–50 cm-depth range used in this study.  相似文献

De novo structural prediction of transition metal complexes is investigated. Technetium complexes are chosen given their importance in medical imaging and nuclear waste remediation and for the chemical diversity they display. A new conformational searching algorithm (LIGB) for transition metals is described that allows one to search for different conformational and geometric isomers within a single simulation. In the preponderance of cases, both conformational searching techniques (LIGB and high-temperature molecular dynamics/simulated annealing) provide comparable results, while LIGB is superior for macrocyclic complexes. A genetic algorithm-optimized PM3(tm) parametrization for Tc is compared with the standard implementation and found to yield a significant improvement in predictive ability for the most prevalent Tc structural motifs. The utility of a coupled molecular mechanics-semiempirical quantum mechanics protocol is demonstrated for very rapid, efficient, and effective de novo prediction of transition metal complex geometries.  相似文献

Treatment of N-[(4-hydroxy-6-phenyl)pyrimidin-2-yl]cyanamide with 1° alkyl or arylamines in isopropyl alcohol for only 10 min at 110–120 °C under microwave conditions gave the corresponding N′-alkyl(aryl)guanidine derivatives in excellent yields (65–84%). Isolated yields were greatest when >1.0 equiv. of amines were employed, but excellent results were also obtained when aryl and alkylamines were reacted with a more atom-economical loading (1.0 equiv.; 70% and 72% ave. yields, respectively). Arylamines with either highly electron withdrawing substituents (e.g. CO2H) or pi-deficient heterocycles (e.g. variously substituted aminopyridines) did not work well under these conditions, and reaction with ureas and/or amino acids did not give detectable products. Work-up was exceedingly simple, and involved simple collection and washing of product on a sintered glass funnel. Products were obtained in analytically pure form and required approximately 1 h to prepare, start to finish.  相似文献

The consistency of three density functional computational implementations (DMol, DGauss, and deMon) are compared with high-level Hartree–Fock and Møller–Plesset (MP) calculations for triazene (HN?NNH2) and formyl triazene (HN?NNHCOH). Proton affinities on all electronegative sites are investigated as well as the geometries of the neutral and protonated species. Density functional calculations employing the nonlocal gradient corrections show agreement with MP calculations for both proton affinities and geometries of neutral and protonated triazenes. Local spin density approximation DMol calculations using numerical basis sets must employ an extended basis to agree with other density functional codes using analytic Gaussian basis sets. The lowest energy conformation of triazene was found to be nonplanar; however, the degree of nonplanarity, as well as some bond lengths, is dependent on the basis set, electron correlation treatment, and methods used for the calculation. © 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Normal and tangential stress vectors were measured at the soil-tire interface of a pneumatic tractor tire on firm and soft soils. Stress magnitudes were determined with a transducer which was designed to measure both normal and tangential stresses. The orientation of the transducer was determined using a 3-dimensional, sonic digitizing system which was mounted inside the air cavity of the tire. Data are presented from tests conducted at zero input torque, zero net traction, and 0.15 net traction ratio which show the effects of inflation pressure, dynamic load, and soil conditions on the stress vectors.  相似文献

    It is shown that four-dimensional N=1N=1 supersymmetric QCD with massive flavors in the fundamental representation of the gauge group can be realized in the hidden sector of E8×E8E8×E8 heterotic string vacua. The number of flavors can be chosen to lie in the range of validity of the free-magnetic dual, using which one can demonstrate the existence of long-lived meta-stable non-supersymmetric vacua. This is shown explicitly for the gauge group Spin(10)Spin(10), but the methods are applicable to Spin(Nc)Spin(Nc), SU(Nc)SU(Nc) and Sp(Nc)Sp(Nc) for a wide range of color index NcNc. Hidden sectors of this type can potentially be used as a mechanism to break supersymmetry within the context of heterotic M-theory.  相似文献

    A Trelleborg Twin 421 Mark II 600/55-26.5 steel-reinforced bias-ply forwarder drive tire at inflation pressures of 100 and 240 kPa and dynamic loads of 23.9 and 40 kN was used at 5% travel reduction on a firm clay soil. Effects of dynamic load and inflation pressure on soil–tire contact pressures were determined using six pressure transducers mounted on the tire tread. Three were mounted on the face of a lug and three at corresponding locations on the undertread. Contact angles increased with decreases in inflation pressure and increases in dynamic load. Contact pressures on a lug at the edge of the tire increased as dynamic load increased. Mean and peak pressures on the undertread generally were less than those on a lug. The peak pressures on a lug occurred forward of the axle in nearly all combinations of dynamic load, inflation pressure, and pressure sensor location, and peak pressures on the undertread occurred to the rear of the axle in most of the combinations. Ratios of the peak contact pressure to the inflation pressure ranged from 0 at the edge of the undertread for three combinations of dynamic load and inflation pressure to 8.39 for the pressure sensor on a lug, near the tire centerline, when the tire was underinflated. At constant dynamic load, net traction and tractive efficiency decreased as inflation pressure increased.  相似文献
