A Banach algebra of generalized functions

An algebraic isomorphism from a convolution algebra of Laplace transformable functions with support on the half-line to a complete discrete normed convolution algebra of sequences is used to construct generalized functions. The extension of this function-to-sequence map to a commutative Banach algebra of generalized functions is shown to be a Banach algebra isomorphism which can be utilized to establish a discrete formulation of a Mikusiński-type operational calculus and to construct algorithms for the numerical solution of half-line convolution equations.     

The algebra of harmonic functions for a matrix-valued transfer operator

We analyze matrix-valued transfer operators. We prove that the fixed points of transfer operators form a finite-dimensional C^∗-algebra. For matrix weights satisfying a low-pass condition we identify the minimal projections in this algebra as correlations of scaling functions, i.e., limits of cascade algorithms.     

The space of invariant functions on a finite Lie algebra

We show that the operations of Fourier transform and duality on the space of adjoint-invariant functions on a finite Lie algebra commute with each other. This result is applied to give formulae for the Fourier transform of a ``Brauer function'---i.e. one whose value at depends only on the semisimple part of and for the dual of the convolution of any function with the Steinberg function. Geometric applications include the evaluation of the characters of the Springer representations of Weyl groups and the study of the equivariant cohomology of local systems on , where is a maximal torus of the underlying reductive group .

     

The algebra of set functions I: The product theorem and duality

We give a comprehensive introduction to the algebra of set functions and its generating functions. This algebraic tool allows us to formulate and prove a product theorem for the enumeration of functions of many different kinds, in particular injective functions, surjective functions, matchings and colourings of the vertices of a hypergraph. Moreover, we develop a general duality theory for counting functions.     

Applications of spherical functions in multilinear algebra

Spherical functions are shown to organize and unify previous work on generalized matrix functions and symmetry classes of tensors. At the same time, new areas of investigation are suggested.     

The algebra of almost periodic functions has infinite topological stable rank

We show that if is the uniform algebra of almost periodic functions, then the set cannot be dense in for any positive integer .

     

Amenability properties of Banach algebra valued continuous functions

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space and A   a Banach algebra. We investigate amenability properties of the algebra C(X,A)$C(X,A)$ of all A  -valued continuous functions. We show that C(X,A)$C(X,A)$ has a bounded approximate diagonal if and only if A has a bounded approximate diagonal; if A   has a compactly central approximate diagonal (unbounded) then C(X,A)$C(X,A)$ has a compactly approximate diagonal. Weak amenability of C(X,A)$C(X,A)$ for commutative A is also considered.
