Poly (ether ether ketone)(PEEK) is a high-performance semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer.Exposure of the polymeric surface to solvents can have a strong effect like softening/swelling of polymeric network or dissolution. In this study, nano-indentation analysis was performed to study the effect of acetone on the surface mechanical properties of PEEK using different exposure time. The experiments were performed with a constant loading rate (10 nm/s) to a maximum indentation displacement (1000 nm).A 30-second hold segment was included at the maximum load to account for any creep effects followed by an unloading segment to 80% unloading. The indentation hardness and the elastic modulus were computed as a continuous function of the penetration displacement in the continuous stiffness mode (CSM) indentation. The experimental data showed that the peak load decreased from ~5.2 mN to ~1.7 mN as exposure time in solvent environment increased from 0 to 18 days. The elastic modulus and the hardness of PEEK samples also displayed a decreasing trend as a function of exposure time in the solvent environment. Two empirical models were used to fit the experimental data of hardness as a function of exposure time which showed a good agreement with the experimental values.  相似文献

The mechanical and electrical properties of the phosphor‐doped nano‐silicon film (nc‐Si:H) prepared by the plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method under electric field have been studied by Tribolab system, which is equipped with nano‐electrical contact resistance (ECR) tool. During indentation, different voltages and loads were applied. The topography of the sample surface was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The experimental results show that the roughness of the film is 5.69 nm; the electric current was measured through the sample/indenter tip with different loads at a fixed voltage, and it increased nonlinearly during the indentation. The maximum current value depth was shallower than the maximum depth of each indent due to the plasticity of the film. When the loading speed is increased to 250 µN/s, the microcrack occurred on the film; the hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) changed with the voltage applied both in open circuit and in short circuit case, which resulted in different values of H/E rate from 0.082 to 0.096. An innovative cooling and heating device has been successfully applied to an instrumented macrohardness testing machine in close collaboration with the company Zwick/Roell. The prototype allows the local time-dependent analysis of mechanical properties such as Martens hardness and indentation modulus, as well as fracture toughness and creep and relaxation behaviour at temperatures ranging from −100 °C to +100 °C. On the basis of load–indentation depth, load–time or indentation depth–time diagrams, the indentation behaviour as a function of test speed and/or temperature (which has rarely been done for polymers in the macro-range of loading) depending on matrix and materials composition (amorphous/semicrystalline thermoplastics, epoxy resins, micro- and nanocomposites) has been analysed. Martens-hardness, indentation modulus on the one hand and creep compliance and relaxation modulus on the other have been found to be strongly temperature dependent. Adequate methods of indentation fracture mechanics have been enhanced for polymers and applied to determine the fracture toughness of very different polymer-based materials.  相似文献

Indentation is a comparatively simple and virtually nondestructive method of determining mechanical properties of material surfaces by means of an indenter inducing a localized deformation. The paper present experimental results of the load-displacement curves, the hardness and the elastic modulus data, and associated analysis for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) surfaces as a function of contact displacement. The experimental results include continuous stiffness indentations performed using constant loading rate and constant displacement rate experiments. The continuous stiffness indentation involves continuous calculation of a material stiffness, and hence hardness and elastic modulus of surfaces, during discrete loading-unloading cycles, as in a conventional indentation routine, and in a comparatively smaller time constant. The dependence of the compliance curves, the hardness, the elastic modulus and the plasticity index upon the imposed penetration depth, the applied normal load and the deformation rate are described. Tip area and load frame calibrations for the continuous stiffness indentation are also reported. The paper includes practical considerations encountered during indentation of polymers specifically at low penetration depths. The experimental results show a peculiarly harder response of PMMA surfaces at the submicron (near to surface) layers.  相似文献

Titanium or titanium alloys are very attractive biomedical materials. Biocompatible elements of oxygen, calcium and phosphorus were implanted into titanium and changes of surface hardness were measured using an ultra micro indenter (UMIS-2000). A multiple load-partial unload procedure that can reveal a hardness versus depth profile was adopted. Depth profiles of concentration of implanted ions were obtained by SIMS measurement. For O and P implantation, it is observed that the hardness increases with the increases in the dose. O implantation produced the largest increase in hardness, up to 2.2 times higher than the unimplanted titanium. On the other hand, Ca implantation produced only a small increase in the hardness that was independent of the ion dose. The surface oxide layer of a Ca implanted titanium sample was much thicker than the unimplanted samples or those implanted with O and P ions. The depth of maximum hardness increases with increasing energy of implanted ions. The depths of the maximum hardness occur at indentation depths of one-third to one-eighth of the mean ranges of implanted ions.  相似文献

Nano-indentation is an interesting tool for analyzing nano-scale mechanical properties. The analysis of nano-mechanical properties as a function of experimental conditions is very critical for designing engineering components. In this study, nano-indentation experiments were performed by considering different values of amplitude (1, 5, 10?nm), frequency (11.2, 22.5, 45?Hz), strain rate (0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 1?s?1), peak load (10, 30, 100?mN) and hold time (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100?sec) to analyze their effect on the mechanical properties of LDPE. The results showed that the effect of amplitude and frequency on the nano-mechanical properties of LDPE were negligible. Load-displacement curves displayed a shift towards higher indentation depths along with a decrease in peak load from 20.6 to 14.8?mN by having a decrease in strain rate from 1 to 0.02?s?1. Elastic modulus and hardness values exhibited a decrease with an increase in hold time. Logarithmic creep model was used to fit the experimental data of creep as a function of holding time which showed good agreement (r2 ≥ 0.97) with the experimental values. Recommended holding times are also suggested to eliminate the creep and nose problem in order to achieve high accuracy in measurements.  相似文献

The authors introduce a prototype of a recording (depth-sensing) macroindentation testing machine that has been modified and extended with a temperature chamber. This prototype allows the analysis of different hardness values (Martens hardness, indentation hardness, ball indentation hardness, etc.) and the indentation modulus, as well as time-dependent properties such as creep and relaxation of polymers and other materials, in a wide range of temperature (?100 – 100 °C). The applicability of the testing machine for fast and less material-consuming determination of the temperature-dependent mechanical properties is illustrated by means of selected amorphous and semicrystalline thermoplastics, i.e., neat (PMMA and PTFE) and reinforced ones (PMMA/silica nanocomposites).  相似文献

Nanoindentation of cellulose diacetate‐graft‐poly(lactide)s (CDA‐g‐PLLAs) synthesized by ring opening graft copolymerization of L ‐lactide in bulk onto the residual hydroxyl positions on CDA were conducted to investigate the effect of the molecular composition and thermal aging on mechanical properties and creep behavior. Continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) technique was used to obtained hardness and elastic modulus. These material properties were expressed as a mean value from 100 to 300 nm depths and an unloading value at final indentation depth. The hardness and elastic modulus in all CDA‐g‐PLLAs were higher than those in pure CDA, indicating that the introduction of PLLA increases the hardness and elastic modulus. With an increase of crystallinity by thermal aging, the hardness and elastic modulus were increased in both CDA‐g‐PLLA and PLLA. The creep test performed by CSM showed that the creep strain of CDA was decreased by the grafting of PLLA. Thermal aging decreased the creep strain of CDA‐g‐PLLA and PLLA. With an increase of holding time, hardness was decreased, whereas elastic modulus was kept almost constant. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 1114–1121, 2007  相似文献

Impact loading is an important process in the transport industry as it causes wear and failure of critical components. Conveyor belts are of particular importance as they are used in practically every industry where large quantities of goods are moved over short (<10 m) or long distances (>1 km). To investigate stress levels inside the material during impact loading, a gas gun was utilized to shoot 9 mm spherical steel balls onto the surface of a rubber conveyor belt. A high speed video recording system was employed in order to determine penetration depth and dissipated energy of the steel ball. Maximal penetration depths of up to 3.9 mm and maximal dissipated energies of up to 86.8 % were measured. Additionally, a numerical simulation using smooth particle applied mechanics was conducted and compared to the experimental results obtained with the gas gun. The calculated von Mises stresses affected the conveyor belts up to a maximum depth of 8.8 mm with at least 20 MPa. Maximum von Mises stresses were calculated to reach 60 MPa.  相似文献

Response surface methodology based on a five-level, five-variable central composite rotatable design was used to model the average diameter of electrospun poly(methyl methacrylate) nanofibers. The effects studied include polymer concentration, distance, temperature, flow rate, and voltage. Fiber diameter was correlated to these variables by using a second-order polynomial function at a 95% confidence level. The analysis confirmed that polymer concentration, temperature, flow rate, and voltage were the significant factors affecting the diameter with the first three being the most significant ones. Also, no interaction effect terms were found to be significant. The coefficient of determination of the model was found to be 0.9443. The predicted fiber diameters were in agreement with the experimental results. The adequacy of the model was examined using additional independent experiments that were not employed in the model generation to fabricate 100–500 nm fibers with the average absolute relative deviation being 3.55%. A minimum fiber diameter of 36 nm was established and could be validated by experiments. When used for immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase by adsorption, the nanofibrous membranes provided enzyme loading as high as 332 mg lipase/g fibers, which is 5.2 times the reported maximum value.  相似文献

Uniaxial tensile creep tests at various applied stresses were carried out to demonstrate that PP is nonlinear viscoelastic. A novel phenomenological model consisting of springs, dashpots, stress-locks and sliders was proposed to describe the nonlinear viscoelasticity. Indentation creep tests at different applied load levels were also performed on nonlinear viscoelastic PP. It was found that the shear creep compliance varies with the applied load level when the applied load is less than 5 mN, which means the indentation creep behavior was nonlinear. To find the real reason for the nonlinearity in indentation creep tests, the elastic modulus at various indentation depths was measured using continuous stiffness measurements (CSM). By analyzing the variation of elastic modulus with indentation depth, the nonlinearity of indentation creep behavior was proved to be caused by the non-uniform properties in the surface of the specimen rather than nonlinear viscoelasticity.  相似文献

The indentation strain rate is currently assumed to remain unvaried during continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) nanoindentation where is imposed to remain constant. To probe the validity of this assumption for the nanoindentation of glassy polymers, a series of experiments have been performed at different set values on poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate using CSM technique. It is firstly shown that the actual value changes drastically at shallow indentation depths and it takes a considerable depth, which is material independent, for this parameter to attain a stabilized value. Furthermore, the strain rate is measured directly as the descent rate of the indenter divided by its instantaneous depth ( ), and indirectly via considering the variations of the load and hardness during the test. Both of these approaches reveal that the strain rate is considerably larger at shallow depths, and the depth beyond which it becomes constant is material and ratio dependent. Finally, by considering the relationship between the hardness and strain rate, it is observed that although the strain rate variation alters the hardness, its contribution is not able to justify the observed indentation size effect; hence, other contributing factors for this phenomenon are discussed for their possible effects. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work deals with the influence of crystallization temperature, cooling rate and annealing conditions on microhardness, indentation modulus and creep behaviour of ethylene/propylene (E/P) random copolymers with 4, 6 and 8 mol% ethylene as well as α- and β-spherulites in a homopolymer and an E/P random copolymer. The materials are unnucleated, the formation of β-spherulites occurs sporadically. Additionally the indentation creep behaviour of α- and β-nucleated PP is investigated. A nearly linear correlation between hardness as well as indentation modulus and crystallintity of the E/P copolymers can be proved. An increasing cooling rate leads to decreasing hardness and modulus values due to the hindered crystallization. For the investigation of the α- and β-phases different crystallization and annealing temperatures are used. Independent of these conditions, microhardness and modulus determined by indentation testing are lower for the β-phase in both materials. Increasing crystallization temperature and annealing lead to an increasing hardness and modulus in both phases. However, an effective annealing effect takes place only at short times and elevated temperatures above 100 °C. The increasing of microhardness and modulus is correlated with an increasing in lamellae thicknesses. Additionally, indentation creep experiments were carried out on nucleated materials that show the stronger creep tendency of the β-phase PP and the stronger influence of annealing on this phase.  相似文献

Novel epoxy‐clay nanocomposites have been prepared by epoxy and organoclays. Polyoxypropylene triamine (Jeffamine T‐403), primary polyethertriamine (Jeffamine T‐5000) and three types of polyoxypropylene diamine (Jeffamine D‐230, D‐400, D‐2000) with different molecular weight were used to treat Na‐montmorillonite (MMT) to form organoclays. The preparation involves the ion exchange of Na+ in MMT with the organic ammonium group in Jeffamine compounds. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the intercalation of these organic moieties to form Jeffamine‐MMT intercalates. Jeffamine D‐230 was used as a swelling agent for the organoclay and curing agent. It was established that the d001 spacing of MMT in epoxy‐clay nanocomposites depends on the silicate modification. Although XRD data did not show any apparent order of the clay layers in the T5000‐MMT/epoxy nanocomposite, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of multiplets with an average size of 5 nm and the average spacing between multiplets falls in the range of 100 Å. The multiplets clustered into mineral rich domains with an average size of 140 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the absence of mineral aggregate. Nanocomposites exhibit significant increase in thermal stability in comparison to the original epoxy. The effect of the organoclay on the hardness and toughness properties of crosslinked polymer matrix was studied. The hardness of all the resulting materials was enhanced with the inclusion of organoclay. A three‐fold increase in the energy required for breaking the test specimen was found for T5000‐MMT/epoxy containing 7 wt% of organoclay as compared to that of pure epoxy. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) is added to a pure-silica-zeolite MEL nanoparticle suspension and the mixture is subsequently used for preparing spin-on low-dielectric constant (low-k) films. The films are then characterized by ellipsometric porosimetry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoindentation. Investigation into the film microstructure indicates that the addition of TEOS significantly increases the fraction of the crystalline domains, decreases the inter-crystal mesopore size, and narrows the pore size distribution. Films with 12% TEOS loading have a mean pore size distribution centered at 3.5 nm (diameter) with a full width at half maximum (fwhm) of 0.8 nm, while those with no TEOS have a distribution at 11.1 nm and fwhm of 7.9 nm. At 12% TEOS loading, the reduced modulus and hardness are 11.0 and 1.12 GPa, respectively; without TEOS, the values are 6.4 and 0.57 GPa.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to characterize the mechanical behavior of blends of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) during monotonic and cyclic loading. Compression experiments were performed using a SHIMADZU universal testing machine (10−4 to 10−2 s−1) and a split Hopkinson pressure bar (1600–5000 s−1), with, the test temperatures ranging from 293 to 353 K. The influence of the rate and temperature on the deformation of PC/ABS is discussed in detail. Based on the investigation of numerous constitutive models, a phenomenological model called DSGZ was chosen to describe the compression behavior of PC/ABS. This model could not accurately reproduce the deformation of polymers at high strain rates when utilizing the same material coefficients for the low and high strain–rate deformations. In addition, this model was unable to capture the deformation features during unloading and subsequent reloading when adopting the original stress–strain updating algorithm. Hence, some improvements to the model have been implemented to better predict the deformation. Finally, the model predictions are shown to be consistent with the experimental results.  相似文献

We conducted a detailed investigation of the influence of the material properties of dynamic polymer network coatings on their self-healing and damage-reporting performance. A series of reversible polyacrylate urethane networks containing the damage-reporting diarylbibenzofuranone unit were synthesized, and their material properties (e.g., indentation modulus, hardness modulus, and glass-transition temperature) were measured conducting nanoindentation and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The damage-reporting and self-healing performances of the dynamic polymer network coatings exhibited opposite tendencies with respect to the material properties of the polymer network coatings. Soft polymer network coatings with low glass-transition temperature (~10 °C) and indentation hardness (20 MPa) exhibited better self-healing performance (almost 100%) but two times worse damage-reporting properties than hard polymer network coatings with high glass-transition temperature (35~50 °C) and indentation hardness (150~200 MPa). These features of the dynamic polymer network coatings are unique; they are not observed in elastomers, films, and hydrogels, whereby the polymer networks are bound to the substrate surface. Evidence indicates that controlling the polymer’s physical properties is a key factor in designing high-performance self-healing and damage-reporting polymer coatings based on mechanophores.  相似文献

Multifunctional epoxy‐polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite coatings with antifouling and anticorrosion characteristics have been developed via in situ polymerization method at different loading (1, 3, and 6.5 wt.%) of ZnO nanoparticles to cater marine applications. A detailed comparative analysis has been carried out between epoxy‐polydimethylsiloxane control (EPC) and ZnO‐reinforced coatings to determine the influence of ZnO loading on various properties. The incorporation of ZnO in EPC led to increase in root mean square (RMS) roughness to 126.75 nm and improved hydrophobicity showing maximum contact angle of 123.5° with low surface energy of 19.75 mN/m of nanocomposite coating as compared with control coating. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) result indicated improved glass transition temperature of nanocomposite coatings with highest Tg obtained at 83.69°C in case of 1 wt.% loading of ZnO. The increase in hydrophobicity of the system was accompanied by upgraded anticorrosion performance exhibiting 98.8% corrosion inhibition efficiency (CIE) as compared with control coating and lower corrosion rate of 0.12 × 10?3 mm/year. The Taber abrasion resistance and pull‐off adhesion strength results indicated an increment of 34.7% and 150.7%, respectively, in case of nanocomposite coating as compared with the control coating. The hardness of nanocomposite coatings was also improved, and maximum hardness was found to be 65.75 MPa for nanocomposite coating with 1 wt.% of ZnO. Our study showed that the nanocomposite coating was efficient in inhibiting accumulation of marine bacteria and preventing biofouling for more than 8 months. The developed environment‐friendly and efficient nanocomposite material has a promising future as a high‐performance anticorrosive and antifouling coating for marine applications.  相似文献

PA/PCC micro-composites were prepared with different PCC contents. Compatibility tests were conducted with crude oil at aging times up to 28 days. The experimental phases of the instrumented indentation test (loading, creep and unloading) were modeled. Moreover, the heuristic method of differential evolution was used to fit the parameters. Loading curves showed higher scattering than the subsequent unloading, regardless of the aging time. The two unloading parameters exhibited quasi-linear dependency, but their dispersion was quite different. The mechanical and viscoelastic properties revealed that the PCC filler acted as a reinforcing agent. However, a higher PCC content did not lead to an increase in modulus, probably due to the poor interaction between particles and polymer. The hardness results showed that this property is not so sensitive to the material's morphology as are modulus data. All systems still had predominantly plastic behavior even after aging.  相似文献
