Free vibration response of functionally graded material (FGM) beams is studied based on the Levinson beam theory (LBT). Equations of motion of an FGM beam are derived by directly integrating the stress-form equations of elasticity along the beam depth with the inertial resultant forces related to the included coupling and higherorder shear strain. Assuming harmonic response, governing equations of the free vibration of the FGM beam are reduced to a standard system of second-order ordinary differential equations associated with boundary conditions in terms of shape functions related to axial and transverse displacements and the rotational angle. By a shooting method to solve the two-point boundary value problem of the three coupled ordinary differential equations, free vibration response of thick FGM beams is obtained numerically. Particularly, for a beam with simply supported edges, the natural frequency of an FGM Levinson beam is analytically derived in terms of the natural frequency of a corresponding homogenous Euler-Bernoulli beam. As the material properties are assumed to vary through the depth according to the power-law functions, the numerical results of frequencies are presented to examine the effects of the material gradient parameter, the length-to-depth ratio, and the boundary conditions on the vibration response.

In this paper, we examine the postbuckling behavior of functionally graded material FGM rectangular plates that are integrated with surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators and are subjected to the combined action of uniform temperature change, in-plane forces, and constant applied actuator voltage. A Galerkin-differential quadrature iteration algorithm is proposed for solution of the non-linear partial differential governing equations. To account for the transverse shear strains, the Reddy higher-order shear deformation plate theory is employed. The bifurcation-type thermo-mechanical buckling of fully clamped plates, and the postbuckling behavior of plates with more general boundary conditions subject to various thermo-electro-mechanical loads, are discussed in detail. Parametric studies are also undertaken, and show the effects of applied actuator voltage, in-plane forces, volume fraction exponents, temperature change, and the character of boundary conditions on the buckling and postbuckling characteristics of the plates.

This paper investigates the small- and large-amplitude vibrations of thermally postbuckled carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams resting on elastic foundations. For the CNTRC beams, uniformly distributed (UD) and functionally graded (FG) reinforcements are considered where the temperature-dependent material properties of CNRTC beams are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction and estimated through a micromechanical model. The motion equations are derived based on a higher order shear deformation beam theory with including the beam-foundation interaction. The initial deflection caused by thermal postbuckling is also included. The numerical illustrations concern small- and large-amplitude vibration characteristics of thermally postbuckled CNTRC beams under uniform temperature field. The effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) volume fraction and distribution patterns as well as foundation stiffness on the vibration characteristics of CNTRC beams are examined in detail.

The paper describes the use of active structures technology for deformation and nonlinear free vibrations control of a simply supported curved beam with upper and lower surface-bonded piezoelectric layers, when the curvature is a result of the electric field application. Each of the active layers behaves as a single actuator, but simultaneously the whole system may be treated as a piezoelectric composite bender. Controlled application of the voltage across piezoelectric layers leads to elongation of one layer and to shortening of another one, which results in the beam deflection. Both the Euler–Bernoulli and von Karman moderately large deformation theories are the basis for derivation of the nonlinear equations of motion. Approximate analytical solutions are found by using the Lindstedt–Poincaré method which belongs to perturbation techniques. The method makes possible to decompose the governing equations into a pair of differential equations for the static deflection and a set of differential equations for the transversal vibration of the beam. The static response of the system under the electric field is investigated initially. Then, the free vibrations of such deformed sandwich beams are studied to prove that statically pre-stressed beams have higher natural frequencies in regard to the straight ones and that this effect is stronger for the lower eigenfrequencies. The numerical analysis provides also a spectrum of the amplitude-dependent nonlinear frequencies and mode shapes for different geometrical configurations. It is demonstrated that the amplitude–frequency relation, which is of the hardening type for straight beams, may change from hard to soft for deformed beams, as it happens for the symmetric vibration modes. The hardening-type nonlinear behaviour is exhibited for the antisymmetric vibration modes, independently from the system stiffness and dimensions.

A numerical solution methodology is proposed herein to investigate the nonlinear forced vibrations of Euler–Bernoulli beams with different boundary conditions around the buckled configurations. By introducing a set of differential and integral matrix operators, the nonlinear integro-differential equation that governs the buckling of beams is discretized and then solved using the pseudo-arc-length method. The discretized governing equation of free vibration around the buckled configurations is also solved as an eigenvalue problem after imposing the boundary conditions and some complicated matrix manipulations. To study forced and nonlinear vibrations that take place around a buckled configuration, a Galerkin-based numerical method is applied to reduce the partial integro-differential equation into a time-varying ordinary differential equation of Duffing type. The Duffing equation is then discretized using time differential matrix operators, which are defined based on the derivatives of a periodic base function. Finally, for any given magnitude of axial load, the pseudo -arc-length method is used to obtain the nonlinear frequencies of buckled beams. The effects of axial load on the free vibration, nonlinear, and forced vibrations of beams in both prebuckling and postbuckling domains for the lowest three vibration modes are analyzed. This study shows that the nonlinear response of beams subjected to periodic excitation is complex in the postbuckling domain. For example, the type of boundary conditions significantly affects the nonlinear response of the postbuckled beams.

THERMAL POST-BUCKLING OF FUNCTIONALLY GRADED MATERIAL TIMOSHENKO BEAMS
Analysis of thermal post-buckling of FGM (Functionally Graded Material) Timoshenko beams subjected to transversely non-uniform temperature rise is presented. By accurately considering the axial extension and transverse shear deformation in the sense of theory of Timoshenko beam, geometrical nonlinear governing equations including seven basic unknown functions for functionally graded beams subjected to mechanical and thermal loads were formulated. In the analysis, it was assumed that the material properties of the beam vary continuously as a power function of the thickness coordinate. By using a shooting method, the obtained nonlinear boundary value problem was numerically solved and thermal buckling and post-buckling response of transversely non-uniformly heated FGM Timoshenko beams with fixed-fixed edges were obtained. Characteristic curves of the buckling deformation of the beam varying with thermal load and the power law index are plotted. The effects of material gradient property on the buckling deformation and critical temperature of beam were discussed in details. The results show that there exists the tension-bend coupling deformation in the uniformly heated beam because of the transversely non-uniform characteristic of materials.

Advancements in manufacturing technology, including the rapid development of additive manufacturing (AM), allow the fabrication of complex functionally graded material (FGM) sectioned beams. Portions of these beams may be made from different materials with possibly different gradients of material properties. The present work proposes models to investigate the free vibration of FGM sectioned beams based on onedimensional (1D) finite element analysis. For this purpose, a sample beam is divided into discrete elements, and the total energy stored in each element during vibration is computed by considering either the Timoshenko or Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Then, Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations of motion for the beam. The effects of material properties and dimensions of FGM sections on the beam's natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes are then investigated based on a dynamic Timoshenko model (TM). The presented model is validated by comparison with three-dimensional (3D) finite element simulations of the first three mode shapes of the beam.

The relationship between the critical buckling loads of functionally graded material(FGM) Levinson beams(LBs) and those of the corresponding homogeneous Euler-Bernoulli beams(HEBBs) is investigated. Properties of the beam are assumed to vary continuously in the depth direction. The governing equations of the FGM beam are derived based on the Levinson beam theory, in which a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strain through the depth is included.By eliminating the axial displacement as well as the rotational angle in the governing equations,an ordinary differential equation in terms of the deflection of the FGM LBs is derived, the form of which is the same as that of HEBBs except for the definition of the load parameter. By solving the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations under different boundary conditions clamped(C), simply-supported(S), roller(R) and free(F) edges combined, a uniform analytical formulation of buckling loads of FGM LBs with S-S, C-C, C-F, C-R and S-R edges is presented for those of HEBBs with the same boundary conditions. For the C-S beam the above-mentioned equation does not hold. Instead, a transcendental equation is derived to find the critical buckling load for the FGM LB which is similar to that for HEBB with the same ends. The significance of this work lies in that the solution of the critical buckling load of a FGM LB can be reduced to that of the HEBB and calculation of three constants whose values only depend upon the throughthe-depth gradient of the material properties and the geometry of the beam. So, a homogeneous and classical expression for the buckling solution of FGM LBs is accomplished.

The thermal buckling and postbuckling analysis of laminated composite beams with temperature-dependent material properties is presented. The governing equations are based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory (FSDT) and the geometrical nonlinearity is modeled using Green's strain tensor in conjunction with the von Karman assumptions. The differential quadrature method (DQM) as an accurate, simple and computationally efficient numerical tool is adopted to discretize the governing equations and the related boundary conditions. A direct iterative method is employed to obtain the critical temperature (bifurcation point) as well as the nonlinear equilibrium path (the postbuckling behavior) of symmetrically laminated beams. The applicability, rapid rate of convergence and high accuracy of the method are established via different examples and by comparing the results with those of existing in literature. Then, the effects of temperature dependence of the material properties, boundary conditions, length-to-thickness ratios, number of layers and ply angle on the thermal buckling and postbuckling characteristic of symmetrically laminated beams are investigated.

The free vibration of functionally graded material (FGM) beams is studied based on both the classical and the first-order shear deformation beam theories. The equations of motion for the FGM beams are derived by considering the shear deforma- tion and the axial, transversal, rotational, and axial-rotational coupling inertia forces on the assumption that the material properties vary arbitrarily in the thickness direction. By using the numerical shooting method to solve the eigenvalue problem of the coupled ordinary differential equations with different boundary conditions, the natural frequen- cies of the FGM Timoshenko beams are obtained numerically. In a special case of the classical beam theory, a proportional transformation between the natural frequencies of the FGM and the reference homogenous beams is obtained by using the mathematical similarity between the mathematical formulations. This formula provides a simple and useful approach to evaluate the natural frequencies of the FGM beams without dealing with the tension-bending coupling problem. Approximately, this analogous transition can also be extended to predict the frequencies of the FGM Timoshenko beams. The numerical results obtained by the shooting method and those obtained by the analogous transformation are presented to show the effects of the material gradient, the slenderness ratio, and the boundary conditions on the natural frequencies in detail.

Nonlinear vibration of beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is studied in this paper based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and von Kármán geometric nonlinearity. It is assumed that material properties follow either exponential or power law distributions through thickness direction. Galerkin procedure is used to obtain a second order nonlinear ordinary equation with quadratic and cubic nonlinear terms. The direct numerical integration method and Runge-Kutta method are employed to find the nonlinear vibration response of FGM beams with different end supports. The effects of material property distribution and end supports on the nonlinear dynamic behavior of FGM beams are discussed. It is found that unlike homogeneous beams, FGM beams show different vibration behavior at positive and negative amplitudes due to the presence of quadratic nonlinear term arising from bending-stretching coupling effect.

A postbuckling analysis is presented for a simply supported, shear deformable functionally graded plate with piezoelectric actuators subjected to the combined action of mechanical, electrical and thermal loads. The temperature field considered is assumed to be of uniform distribution over the plate surface and through the plate thickness and the electric field considered only has non-zero-valued component EZ. The material properties of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents, and the material properties of both FGM and piezoelectric layers are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The governing equations are based on a higher order shear deformation plate theory that includes thermo-piezoelectric effects. The initial geometric imperfection of the plate is taken into account. Two cases of the in-plane boundary conditions are considered. A two step perturbation technique is employed to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. The numerical illustrations concern the postbuckling behavior of perfect and imperfect, geometrically mid-plane symmetric FGM plates with fully covered or embedded piezoelectric actuators under different sets of thermal and electric loading conditions. The effects played by temperature rise, volume fraction distribution, applied voltage, the character of in-plane boundary conditions, as well as initial geometric imperfections are studied.

The free vibration analysis of a rotating cylindrical shell with an analytical method is investigated. The shell is considered as a sandwich structure, where the middle layer is a functionally graded material(FGM) shell, and it is surrounded by two piezoelectric layers. Considering piezoelectric materials to be functionally graded(FG),the material properties vary along the thickness direction as one innovation of this study.Applying the first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT), the equations of motion of this electromechanical system are derived as the partial differential equations(PDEs) using Hamilton's principle. Then, the Galerkin procedure is used to discretize the governing equations, and the present results are compared with the previously published results for both isotropic and FGM shells to verify the analytical method. Finally, the effects of FGM and functionally graded piezoelectric material(FGPM) properties as well as the thickness ratio and the axial and circumferential wave numbers on the natural frequencies are studied. Moreover, the Campbell diagram is plotted and discussed through the governing equations. The present results show that increasing the non-homogeneous index of the FGM decreases the natural frequencies on the contrary of the effect of non-homogeneous index of the FGPM.

Vibration properties of a rotating Functionally Graded Electro-Rheological (FGER) beam are investigated. In the composition of three layered beam, an electrorheological fluid layer is embedded between two functionally graded material layers. Classical beam theory is applied in the analysis of Functionally Graded Material (FGM) layers. Using Hamilton??s principle and finite element method (FEM), equations of motion of the FGER beam are derived. The effects of various parameters such as FGM volume fraction index, rotating speed, thickness of the viscoelastic core and electric field on the resonant frequencies and modal loss factors are studied. The results quantify the significant effect of the FGM distribution and the ER core on the vibration suppression of the rotating composite beam.
