The effects of micro-rotation and vortex viscosity in micropolar fluids have been investigated numerically to determine heat transfer by natural convection between concentric and vertically eccentric spheres with specified mixed boundary conditions. Calculations were carried out systematically for several different eccentricities and a range of modified Rayleigh numbers to determine the average Nusslet numbers which are affected by the micropolar parameters (F) of the flow and temperature fields. The skin friction stress on the walls has also been studied and discussed. The governing equations, in terms of vorticity, stream function, temperature and angular momentum are expressed in a spherical polar coordinate system. Results were obtained for steady heat-transfer in spherical annuli at a Prandtl number of 0.7, with the modified Rayleigh number ranging from 103 to 5 × 105, for a radius ratio of 2.0 and eccentricities varying from −0.625 to +0.625. Comparisons are attempted between the Newtonian fluid and micropolar fluid.  相似文献

This work addresses the conjugate heat transfer of a simplified PTT fluid flowing past an unbounded sphere in the Stokes regime (Re = 0.01). The problem is numerically solved with the finite-volume method assuming axisymmetry, absence of natural convection and constant physical properties. The sphere generates heat at a constant and uniform rate, and the analysis is conducted for a range of Deborah (0 ≤ De ≤ 100), Prandtl (100 ≤ Pr ≤ 105) and Brinkman (0 ≤ Br ≤ 100) numbers, in the presence or absence of thermal contact resistance at the solid–fluid interface and for different conductivity ratios (0.1 ≤ κ ≤ 10). The drag coefficient shows a monotonic decrease with De, whereas the normalized stresses on the sphere surface and in the wake first increase and then decrease with De. A negative wake was observed for the two solvent viscosity ratios tested (β = 0.1 and 0.5), being more intense for the more elastic fluid. In the absence of viscous dissipation, the average Nusselt number starts to decrease with De after an initial increase. Heat transfer enhancement relative to an equivalent Newtonian fluid was observed for the whole range of conditions tested. The dimensionless temperature of the sphere decreases and becomes more homogeneous when its thermal conductivity increases in relation to the conductivity of the fluid, although small changes are observed in the Nusselt number. The thermal contact resistance at the interface increases the average temperature of the sphere, without affecting significantly the shape of the temperature profiles inside the sphere. When viscous dissipation is considered, significant changes are observed in the heat transfer process as Br increases. Overall, a simplified PTT fluid can moderately enhance heat transfer compared to a Newtonian fluid, but increasing De does not necessarily improve heat exchange.  相似文献

Heat transfer in the steady axisymetrical laminar source flow of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid between two parallel disks in the presence of a transverse applied magnetic field is analyzed. The energy equation is solved numerically for the temperature distribution, where both Joulean and viscous heating are included. Both local and average Nusselt numbers for the case of constant wall temperature are evaluated. For fluids of moderate and high Prandtl numbers, Nusselt number is seen to be a strong function of both Hartmann number and a heat generation parameter together with a modified Peclet number. However, for fluids of small Prandtl number, Joulean heating and viscous dissipation can be neglected without appreciable error.  相似文献

Both hydro-dynamically and thermally fully developed laminar heat transfer of non-Newtonian fluids between fixed parallel plates has been analyzed taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation of the flowing fluid. Thermal boundary condition considered is that both the plates kept at different constant heat fluxes. The energy equation, and in turn the Nusselt number, were solved analytically in terms of Brinkman number and power-law index. The findings show that the heat transfer depends on the power-law index of the flowing fluid. Pseudo-plastic and dilatant fluids manifest themselves differently in the heat transfer characteristics under the influence of viscous dissipation. Under certain conditions, the viscous dissipation effects on heat transfer between parallel plates are significant and should not be neglected.  相似文献

In this paper, the inertial and non-isothermal flow of viscoelastic fluids in a planar channel with 1:3 sudden expansion has been simulated for Brinkman numbers in the range \( - \,20 \le Br \le 20 \). The mass, momentum and energy conservation equations with the non-linear form of Phan-Thien–Tanner constitutive equation are used to describe the behavior of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids flow. The properties of fluid are assumed temperature-dependent and the viscous dissipation terms are considered in the energy equation. The object of the current paper is to investigate the stresses and their effects on heat generation via the viscous dissipation terms in the energy equation for inertial flow of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids. Therefore, plots of streamlines, isothermal lines, normal stress (\( \tau_{xx} \)), normal-transverse stress (\( \tau_{yy} \)) and shear stress (\( \tau_{xy} \)), total dissipation, temperature and local Nusselt numbers have been drawn and examined in the channel expansion. The results show that for the asymmetric flow of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids, the maximum values of total dissipation are located adjacent to the lower wall and at the centerline of the channel expansion. Also, by incrementing the Brinkman number in the hydrodynamically and thermally developing and fully developed zones, the values of total dissipation are increased.  相似文献

Natural convection heat transfers inside horizontal pipes were measured. The Rayleigh numbers were varied from 6.8 × 108 to 1.5 × 1012, while the Prandtl number was fixed at 2,094. Based on the analogy concept, a copper sulfate electroplating system was adopted to measure mass transfer rates in place of heat transfer rates. Test results using single-piece electrodes were in good agreement with the work of Sarac and Korkut. The angle-dependent mass transfer rates, measured using piecewise electrodes, were compared with the results of studies on natural convection in concentric annuli, and showed similar trends. The experiments were expanded to the turbulent region, and a transition criterion was proposed. Angle-dependent natural convection heat transfer correlations for the laminar and turbulent regions were derived.  相似文献

Natural convective heat transfer from an isothermal narrow flat plate embedded in a plane adiabatic surface and inclined at moderate positive and negative angles to the vertical has been numerically and experimentally studied. The solution has the Rayleigh number, the dimensionless plate width, the angle of inclination, and the Prandtl number as parameters. Attention was restricted to a Prandtl number of 0.7. The numerical results have been obtained for Rayleigh numbers between 103 and 107 for dimensionless plate widths of between 0.3 and 1.2 and for angles of inclination between +45° and −45°. In the experimental study, results have been obtained for Rayleigh numbers between 4 × 102 and 105 for dimensionless plate widths of 0.4 and 2.5 and for angles of inclination between +45° and −45° to the vertical. Empirical equations for the heat transfer rate have been derived.  相似文献

The rotational flow of viscoplastic fluids between concentric cylinders is examined while dissipation due to viscous effects through the energy balance. The viscosity of fluid is simultaneously dependent on shear rate and temperature. Exponential dependence of viscosity on temperature is modeled through Nahme law, and the shear dependency is modeled according to the Carreau equation. Hydrodynamically, stick boundary conditions are applied, and thermally, both constant temperature and constant heat flux on the exterior of cylinders are considered. The governing motion and energy balance equations are coupled adding complexity to the already highly correlated set of differential equations. Introduction of Nahme number has resulted in a nonlinear base flow between the cylinders. As well, the condition of constant heat flux has moved the point of maximum temperature toward the inner cylinder. Taking viscous heating into account, the effects of parameters such as Nahme and Brinkman numbers, material time and pseudoplasticity constant on the stability of the flow are investigated. Moreover, the study shows that the total entropy generation number decreases as the fluid elasticity increases. It, however, increases with increasing Nahme and Brinkman numbers.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of laminar, two dimensional heat convection from a circular cylinder performing steady rotation is investigated. The cylinder is␣placed with its axis horizontal in a quiescent fluid of infinite extent. Because of viscous dissipation, the flow process is confined to the region adjacent to the cylinder and is mainly driven by shear and buoyancy forces. The study is based on the solution of the full conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for Rayleigh numbers up to 104 and Reynolds numbers (based on surface velocity) up to 400 while Prandtl number ranges between 0.7 and 7.0. For the range of parameters considered, the study revealed that the rate of heat transfer increases with the increase of Rayleigh number and decreases with the increase of speed of rotation. The increase of Prandtl number resulted in an appreciable increase in the average Nusselt number only at low Reynolds numbers. The effect of Prandtl number at high Reynolds number is negligibly small. The resulting flow field in all cases is steady with no vortex shedding. The streamlines and isotherms are plotted for a number of cases to show the details of the velocity and thermal fields. Received on 15 December 1997  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to study the entropy generation in the natural convection process in square cavities with hot wavy walls through numerical simulations for different undulations and Rayleigh numbers, while keeping the Prandtl number constant. The results show that the hot wall geometry affects notably the heat transfer rate in the cavity. It has been found in the present numerical study that the mean Nusselt number in the case of heat transfer in a cavity with wavy walls is lower, as compared to heat transfer in a cavity without undulations. Based on the obtained dimensionless velocity and temperature values, the distributions of the local entropy generation due to heat transfer and fluid friction, the local Bejan number, and the local entropy generation are determined and plotted for different undulations and Rayleigh numbers. The study is performed for Rayleigh numbers 103 < Ra < 105, irreversibility coefficients 10?4 < φ < 10?2, and Prandtl numbers Pr = 0.71. The total entropy generation is found to increase with increasing undulation number.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer in fully developed flows of viscous dissipating fluids in concentric annular ducts is analyzed analytically. Special attention has been paid to the effect of the viscous dissipation. Two different cases of the thermal boundary conditions are considered: uniform heat flux at the outer wall and adiabatic inner wall (Case A) and uniform heat flux at the inner wall and adiabatic outer wall (Case B). Solutions for the velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number are obtained for different values of the aspect ratio and the Brinkman number. The present analytical results for the case without the viscous dissipation effect are compared with those available in the literature and an excellent agreement is observed. To cite this article: M. The problem of unsteady oscillatory flow and heat transfer of porous medin sandwiched between viscous fluids has been considered through a horizontal channel with isothermal wall temperatures. The flow in the porous medium is modeled using the Brinkman equation. The governing partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations by collecting the non-periodic and periodic terms. Closed-form solutions for each region are found after applying the boundary and interface conditions. The influence of physical parameters, such as the porous parameter, the frequency parameter, the periodic frequency parameter, the viscosity ratios, the conductivity ratios, and the Prandtl number, on the velocity and temperature fields is computed numerically and presented graphically. In addition, the numerical values of the Nusselt number at the top and bottom walls are derived and tabulated.  相似文献

The effects of viscous dissipation are considered for natural convection flow past a semi-infinite inclined plate with variable surface temperature. Velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer are obtained. The effects of Grashof and Prandtl numbers, inclination angle, exponent in the wall temperature variation law, and viscous dissipation parameter on the flow are discussed. It is shown that the time required to reach steady states increases with increasing Prandtl number of the fluid. In addition, an increase in the plate temperature due to viscous dissipation was found to lead to a rise in the average skin friction and a decrease in the average Nusselt number.  相似文献

A theoretical solution is presented for the convective heat transfer of Giesekus viscoelastic fluid in pipes and channels, under fully developed thermal and hydrodynamic flow conditions, for an imposed constant heat flux at the wall. The fluid properties are taken as constant and axial conduction is negligible. The effect of Weissenberg number (We), mobility parameter (α) and Brinkman number (Br) on the temperature profile and Nusselt number are investigated. The results emphasize the significant effect of viscous dissipation and fluid elasticity on the Nusselt number in all circumstances. For wall cooling and the Brinkman number exceeds a critical value (Br 1), the heat generated by viscous dissipation overcomes the heat removed at the wall and fluid heats up longitudinally. Fluid elasticity shifts this critical Brinkman number to higher values.  相似文献

An analytical study of fluid flow and heat transfer in a composite channel is presented. The channel walls are maintained at different constant temperatures in such a way that the temperatures do not allow for free convection. The upper plate is considered to be moving and the lower plate is fixed. The flow is modeled using Darcy–Lapwood–Brinkman equation. The viscous and Darcy dissipation terms are included in the energy equation. By applying suitable matching and boundary conditions, an exact solution has been obtained for the velocity and temperature distributions in the two regions of the composite channel. The effects of various parameters such as the porous medium parameter, viscosity ratio, height ratio, conductivity ratio, Eckert number, and Prandtl number on the velocity and temperature fields are presented graphically and discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method is used to study the Prandtl number effect on flow structure and heat transfer rates in a magnetohydrodynamic flow mixed convection in a lid‐driven cavity filled with a porous medium. The right and left walls are at constant but different temperatures (θh and θc), while the other walls are adiabatic. Gallium and salt water (0.02 < Pr < 13.4) are used as samples of the electroconducting fluids in the cavity. Typical sets of streamlines and isotherms are presented to analyze the flow patterns set up by the competition among the forced flow created by the lid‐driven wall, the buoyancy force of the fluid and the magnetic force of the applied magnetic field. Mathematical formulations in the porous media were constructed based on the Brinkman–Forchheimer model, while the multidistribution‐function model was used for the magnetic field effect. Numerical results were obtained and the effects of the Prandtl number and the other effective parameters such as Richardson, Hartman, and Darcy numbers were investigated. It was found that the fluid fluctuations within the cavity were reduced by increasing the Hartman number. A similar pattern was observed for the Darcy number reduction. Heat transfer was essentially dominated by the conduction for the low Prandtl number and forced convection dominated as the Prandtl number increased. Also, the average Nusselt number was raised by increasing the Prandtl number. It was discovered that a remarkable heat transfer enhancement of up to 28% could be reached by increasing the Prandtl number (from 0.02 to 13.4) at constant Richardson and Darcy numbers. Transient analysis has been investigated numerically to determine heat transfer by natural convection between concentric and vertically eccentric spheres with constant heat flux on the inner wall and a specified isothermal temperature on the outer wall. The governing equations, in terms of vorticity, stream function and temperature are expressed in a spherical polar coordinate system. The alternating direction implicit method and the successive over-relaxation techniques are applied to solve the finite difference form of governing equations. A physical model is introduced which accounts for the effects of fluid buoyancy as well as eccentricity of the outer sphere. Transient solutions of the entire flow field are obtained for a range of modified Rayleigh number (103<Ra?<5×105), for a Prandtl number of 0.7 and a radius ratio of 2.0, with the outer sphere near the top and bottom of the inner sphere (ε=±0.625). Results of the parametric study conducted further reveal that the heat and flow fields are primarily dependent on the modified Rayleigh number and the eccentricity of the spherical annulus. The results of average Nusselt numbers are also compared with the results obtained for flow between two isothermal spheres.  相似文献

A numerical method was developed for flows involving an interface between a homogeneous fluid and a porous medium. It is based on the finite volume method with body‐fitted and multi‐block grids. The Brinkman–Forcheimmer extended model was used to govern the flow in the porous medium region. At its interface, the flow boundary condition imposed is a shear stress jump, which includes the inertial effect, together with a continuity of normal stress. The thermal boundary condition is continuity of temperature and heat flux. The forced convection through a porous insert over a backward‐facing step is investigated. The results are presented with flow configurations for different Darcy numbers, 10?2 to 10?5, porosity from 0.2 to 0.8, Reynolds number from 10 to 800, and the ratio of insert length to channel height from 0.1 to 0.3. The heat transfer is improved by using porous insert. To enhance the heat transfer with minimal frictional losses, it is preferable to have a medium length of insert with medium Darcy number, and larger Reynolds number. The interfacial stress jump coefficients β and β1 were varied from ?1 to 1, and within this range the average and local lower‐wall Nusselt numbers are not sensitive to the parameters. The present paper deals with the flow and heat transfer of a viscous fluid saturated in a porous medium past a permeable and non-isothermal stretching sheet with internal heat generation or absorption and radiation. Closed-form solutions to steady, two dimensional momentum equations with neglecting quadratic inertia terms and heat transfer equation are found using a similarity transformation. Asymptotic expressions of the temperature functions are also presented valid for both very large and very small modified Prandtl numbers. Attention is focused on the effects of porous parameter K, suction parameter R, radiation parameter Nr, viscosity ratio Λ, internal heat parameter α and Prandtl number P to the characteristics of flow and heat transfer.  相似文献

The two-equation `low Reynolds number' k-? model of turbulence with a set of universal constants suggested by Launder and Sharma is modified in the present paper. The variability of the turbulent Prandtl number Prt in the energy equation is assumed along with a change of a constant in the dissipation term of the turbulent kinetic energy equation. The turbulent heat transfer is computed for an air flow in a circular pipe for the Reynolds number within the range of 104?4. The modification considerably improves the agreement between the numerical results and the experiment data published in the available literature.  相似文献
