This paper considers a single-server queueing model with finite and infinite buffers in which customers arrive according to a discrete-time renewal process. The customers are served one at a time under discrete-time Markovian service process (D-MSP). This service process is similar to the discrete-time Markovian arrival process (D-MAP), where arrivals are replaced with service completions. Using the imbedded Markov chain technique and the matrix-geometric method, we obtain the system-length distribution at a prearrival epoch. We also provide the steady-state system-length distribution at an arbitrary epoch by using the supplementary variable technique and the classical argument based on renewal-theory. The analysis of actual-waiting-time (in the queue) distribution (measured in slots) has also been investigated. Further, we derive the coefficient of correlation of the lagged interdeparture intervals. Moreover, computational experiences with a variety of numerical results in the form of tables and graphs are discussed.

We consider a discrete-time single-server queueing model where arrivals are governed by a discrete Markovian arrival process (DMAP), which captures both burstiness and correlation in the interarrival times, and the service times and the vacation duration times are assumed to have a general phase-type distributions. The vacation policy is that of a working vacation policy where the server serves the customers at a lower rate during the vacation period as compared to the rate during the normal busy period. Various performance measures of this queueing system like the stationary queue length distribution, waiting time distribution and the distribution of regular busy period are derived. Through numerical experiments, certain insights are presented based on a comparison of the considered model with an equivalent model with independent arrivals, and the effect of the parameters on the performance measures of this model are analyzed.

This paper examines an M[x]/G/1 queueing system with a randomized vacation policy and at most J vacations. Whenever the system is empty, the server immediately takes a vacation. If there is at least one customer found waiting in the queue upon returning from a vacation, the server will be immediately activated for service. Otherwise, if no customers are waiting for service at the end of a vacation, the server either remains idle with probability p or leaves for another vacation with probability 1 − p. This pattern continues until the number of vacations taken reaches J. If the system is empty by the end of the Jth vacation, the server becomes idle in the system. Whenever one or more customers arrive at server idle state, the server immediately starts providing service for the arrivals. Assume that the server may meet an unpredictable breakdown according to a Poisson process and the repair time has a general distribution. For such a system, we derive the distributions of important system characteristics, such as system size distribution at a random epoch and at a departure epoch, system size distribution at busy period initiation epoch, the distributions of idle period, busy period, etc. Finally, a cost model is developed to determine the joint suitable parameters (pJ) at a minimum cost, and some numerical examples are presented for illustrative purpose.

We consider finite buffer single server GI/M/1 queue with exhaustive service discipline and multiple working vacations. Service times during a service period, service times during a vacation period and vacation times are exponentially distributed random variables. System size distributions at pre-arrival and arbitrary epoch with some important performance measures such as, probability of blocking, mean waiting time in the system etc. have been obtained. The model has potential application in the area of communication network, computer systems etc. where a single channel is allotted for more than one source.

This paper treats an M/G/1 queue with single working vacation and vacation interruption under Bernoulli schedule. Whenever the system becomes empty at a service completion instant, the server goes for a single working vacation. In the working vacation, a customer is served at a lower speed, and if there are customers in the queue at the instant of a service completion, the server is resumed to a regular busy period with probability p   (i.e., the vacation is interrupted) or continues the vacation with probability 1-p1-p. Using the matrix analytic method, we obtain the distribution for the stationary queue length at departure epochs. The joint distribution for the stationary queue length and service status at the arbitrary epoch is also obtained by using supplementary variable technique. We also develop a variety of stationary performance measures for this system and give a conditional stochastic decomposition result. Finally, several numerical examples are presented.

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an M[x]/G/1 queueing system under vacation policies with startup/closedown times, where the vacation time, the startup time, and the closedown time are generally distributed. When all the customers are served in the system exhaustively, the server shuts down (deactivates) by a closedown time. After shutdown, the server operates one of (1) multiple vacation policy and (2) single vacation policy. When the server reactivates since shutdown, he needs a startup time before providing the service. If a customer arrives during a closedown time, the service is immediately started without a startup time. The server may break down according to a Poisson process while working and his repair time has a general distribution. We analyze the system characteristics for the vacation models.

This paper considers a like-queue production system in which server vacations and breakdowns are possible. The decision-maker can turn a single server on at any arrival epoch or off at any service completion. We model the system by an M[x]/M/1 queueing system with N policy. The server can be turned off and takes a vacation with exponential random length whenever the system is empty. If the number of units waiting in the system at any vacation completion is less than N, the server will take another vacation. If the server returns from a vacation and finds at least N units in the system, he immediately starts to serve the waiting units. It is assumed that the server breaks down according to a Poisson process and the repair time has an exponential distribution. We derive the distribution of the system size through the probability generating function. We further study the steady-state behavior of the system size distribution at random (stationary) point of time as well as the queue size distribution at departure point of time. Other system characteristics are obtained by means of the grand process and the renewal process. Finally, the expected cost per unit time is considered to determine the optimal operating policy at a minimum cost. The sensitivity analysis is also presented through numerical experiments.

In this paper, we consider a new class of the GI/M/1 queue with single working vacation and vacations. When the system become empty at the end of each regular service period, the server first enters a working vacation during which the server continues to serve the possible arriving customers with a slower rate, after that, the server may resume to the regular service rate if there are customers left in the system, or enter a vacation during which the server stops the service completely if the system is empty. Using matrix geometric solution method, we derive the stationary distribution of the system size at arrival epochs. The stochastic decompositions of system size and conditional system size given that the server is in the regular service period are also obtained. Moreover, using the method of semi-Markov process (SMP), we gain the stationary distribution of system size at arbitrary epochs. We acquire the waiting time and sojourn time of an arbitrary customer by the first-passage time analysis. Furthermore, we analyze the busy period by the theory of limiting theorem of alternative renewal process. Finally, some numerical results are presented.

In this paper we consider a discrete-time GeoX/G/1 queue with unreliable server and multiple adaptive delayed vacations policy in which the vacation time, service time, repair time and the delayed time all follow arbitrary discrete distribution. By using a concise decomposition method, the transient and steady-state distributions of the queue length are studied, and the stochastic decomposition property of steady-state queue length has been proved. Several common vacation policies are special cases of the vacation policy presented in this study. The relationship between the generating functions of steady-state queue length at departure epoch and arbitrary epoch is obtained. Finally, we give some numerical examples to illustrate the effect of the parameters on several performance characteristics.

This paper analyzes the finite-buffer single server queue with vacation(s). It is assumed that the arrivals follow a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP) and the server serves customers according to a non-exhaustive type gated-limited service discipline. It has been also considered that the service and vacation distributions possess rational Laplace-Stieltjes transformation (LST) as these types of distributions may approximate many other distributions appeared in queueing literature. Among several batch acceptance/rejection strategies, the partial batch acceptance strategy is discussed in this paper. The service limit L (1 ≤ LN) is considered to be fixed, where N is the buffer-capacity excluding the one in service. It is assumed that in each busy period the server continues to serve until either L customers out of those that were waiting at the start of the busy period are served or the queue empties, whichever occurs first. The queue-length distribution at vacation termination/service completion epochs is determined by solving a set of linear simultaneous equations. The successive substitution method is used in the steady-state equations embedded at vacation termination/service completion epochs. The distribution of the queue-length at an arbitrary epoch has been obtained using the supplementary variable technique. The queue-length distributions at pre-arrival and post-departure epoch are also obtained. The results of the corresponding infinite-buffer queueing model have been analyzed briefly and matched with the previous model. Net profit function per unit of time is derived and an optimal service limit and buffer-capacity are obtained from a maximal expected profit. Some numerical results are presented in tabular and graphical forms.

In this paper, a multiple server queue, in which each server takes a vacation after serving one customer is studied. The arrival process is Poisson, service times are exponentially distributed and the duration of a vacation follows a phase distribution of order 2. Servers returning from vacation immediately take another vacation if no customers are waiting. A matrix geometric method is used to find the steady state joint probability of number of customers in the system and busy servers, and the mean and the second moment of number of customers and mean waiting time for this model. This queuing model can be used for the analysis of different kinds of communication networks, such as multi-slotted networks, multiple token rings, multiple server polling systems and mobile communication systems.

This paper analyzes a single-server finite-buffer vacation (single and multiple) queue wherein the input process follows a discrete-time batch Markovian arrival process (D-BMAP). The service and vacation times are generally distributed and their durations are integral multiples of a slot duration. We obtain the state probabilities at service completion, vacation termination, arbitrary, and prearrival epochs. The loss probabilities of the first-, an arbitrary- and the last-customer in a batch, and other performance measures along with numerical aspects have been discussed. The analysis of actual waiting time of these customers in an accepted batch is also carried out.

This paper examines a discrete-time Geo/G/1 queue, where the server may take at most J − 1 vacations after the essential vacation. In this system, messages arrive according to Bernoulli process and receive corresponding service immediately if the server is available upon arrival. When the server is busy or on vacation, arriving messages have to wait in the queue. After the messages in the queue are served exhaustively, the server leaves for the essential vacation. At the end of essential vacation, the server activates immediately to serve if there are messages waiting in the queue. Alternatively, the server may take another vacation with probability p or go into idle state with probability (1 − p) until the next message arrives. Such pattern continues until the number of vacations taken reaches J. This queueing system has potential applications in the packet-switched networks. By applying the generating function technique, some important performance measures are derived, which may be useful for network and software system engineers. A cost model, developed to determine the optimum values of p and J at a minimum cost, is also studied.

We consider a discrete time single server queueing system in which arrivals are governed by the Markovian arrival process. During a service period, all customers are served exhaustively. The server goes on vacation as soon as he/she completes service and the system is empty. Termination of the vacation period is controlled by two threshold parameters N and T, i.e. the server terminates his/her vacation as soon as the number waiting reaches N or the waiting time of the leading customer reaches T units. The steady state probability vector is shown to be of matrix-geometric type. The average queue length and the probability that the server is on vacation (or idle) are obtained. We also derive the steady state distribution of the waiting time at arrivals and show that the vacation period distribution is of phase type.

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time finite-capacity queue with Bernoulli arrivals and batch services. In this queue, the single server has a variable service capacity and serves the customers only when the number of customers in system is at least a certain threshold value. For this queue, we first obtain the queue-length distribution just after a service completion, using the embedded Markov chain technique. Then we establish a relationship between the queue-length distribution just after a service completion and that at a random epoch, using elementary ‘rate-in = rate-out’ arguments. Based on this relationship, we obtain the queue-length distribution at a random (as well as at an arrival) epoch, from which important performance measures of practical interest, such as the mean queue length, the mean waiting time, and the loss probability, are also obtained. Sample numerical examples are presented at the end.

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an M[x]/G/1 queueing system with N-policy and at most J vacations. The server takes at most J vacations repeatedly until at least N customers returning from a vacation are waiting in the queue. If no customer arrives by the end of the Jth vacation, the server becomes idle in the system until the number of arrivals in the queue reaches N. We derive the system size distribution at a random epoch and departure epoch, as well as various system characteristics.
