We compare two notions of tameness: one introduced in Chinburg et al. (1996) [4] for actions of affine group schemes and one introduced in Abramovich et al. (2008) [1] for stacks. From this comparison, we deduce results on the structure of inertia groups in these tame situations.

Summary For any subgroupG of (n), we introduce some integer discGn called thediscompacity ofG. This number measures to what extent the closure ofG is not compact. The Markus' conjecture says that a compact affinely flat unimodular manifold is complete. Our main result (called the discompact theorem) is that this conjecture is true under the assumption that the linear holonomy i.e. the parallel transport has discompacity 1. Because discSO(n–1, 1)=1, this ensures that a compact flat Lorentz manifoldM is geodesically complete. Hence, by a previous result of W. Goldman and Y. Kamishima [GK], such aM is, up to finite covering, a solvmanifold. This achieves the proof of a Bieberbach's theorem for compact Lorentz flat manifolds.

Let C be an affine curve, and denote by H1(C) its first troncated De Rham cohomology group, i.e. the quotient of regular differential 1-forms on C by exact 1-forms. First we introduce a nonnegative invariant μ′(C,x) that measures the complexity of the singularity of C at the point x, and we establish the following formula:
dimH1(C)=dimH1(C)+x∈Cμ′(C,x),
where H1(C) is the first singular homology group of C with complex coefficients. Second we consider a family of curves given by the fibres of a morphism f:X→C, where X is an affine reduced surface. We analyse the behaviour of the function y?dimH1(f?1(y)). More precisely we show that it is constant over a Zariski open set, and that it is lower semi-continuous is general. To cite this article: P. Let G be a finite group, let g≥2 and g ′ ≥ 0 be integers. We introduce the algebraic stack classifying the stable curves of genus g endowed with an action of G faithful in each geometric fiber and such that the quotient of each fiber is a semi-stable curve of genus g′. We study the completion of the local rings of this algebraic stack. They are closely related to universal equivariant deformation rings RC,G of stable curves endowed with a faithful action of G. A useful tool for this purpose is a local-global principle generalizing the one obtained by Bertin and Mézard in [BM00]. We then use the results we already proved in [Mau03b] and [Mau03a] to describe some properties of the space (purity, dimension).

We introduce a class of non uniform tree lattices, analogous to the fundamental group of geometrically finite negatively curved manifolds. This class contains all the algebraic examples. Given such a tree lattice, we develop, as in [HP2] in the manifold case, a theory of diophantine approximation of points in the boundary of the tree by the parabolic fixed points. We compute approximation constants for some algebraic examples. All results are expressed intrinsically in terms of a natural geodesic flow for a graph of groups.
