Summary Binary colloid systems, including aerosil and an organic modifier (e.g. polyethylene glycol 400 or squalane) are suggested as stationary phases for gas chromatography. The dependence of solute retention on the composition of the phases is studied and the influence of the sol — gel transition on the retention indicated.  相似文献

A review is presented on the current state of the art and future trends in the development of sol-gel stationary phases for capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The design and synthesis of stationary phases with prescribed chromatographic and surface charge properties represent challenging tasks in contemporary CEC research. Further developments in CEC as a high-efficiency liquid-phase separation technique will greatly depend on new breakthroughs in the area of stationary phase development. The requirements imposed on CEC stationary phase performance are significantly more demanding compared with those for HPLC. The design of CEC stationary phase must take into consideration the structural characteristics that will provide not only the selective solute/stationary phase interactions leading to chromatographic separations but also the surface charge properties that determine the magnitude and direction of the electroosmotic flow responsible for the mobile phase movement through the CEC column. Therefore, the stationary phase technology in CEC presents a more complex problem than in conventional chromatographic techniques. Different approaches to stationary phase development have been reported in contemporary CEC literature. The sol-gel approach represents a promising direction in this important research. It is applicable to the preparation of CEC stationary phases in different formats: surface coatings, micro/submicro particles, and monolithic beds. Besides, in the sol-gel approach, appropriate sol-gel precursors and other building blocks can be selected to create a stationary phase with desired structural and surface properties. One remarkable advantage of the sol-gel approach is the mild thermal conditions under which the stationary phase synthesis can be carried out (typically at room temperature). It also provides an effective pathway to integrating the advantageous properties of organic and inorganic material systems, and thereby enhancing and fine-tuning chromatographic selectivity of the created hybrid organic-inorganic stationary phases. This review focuses on recent developments in the design, synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications of sol-gel stationary phases in CEC.  相似文献

This review article summarizes the variety of polar stationary phases that have been employed for capillary electrochromatographic separations. Compared with reversed-phase stationary phases, the polar alternatives provide a completely different retention selectivity towards polar and charged analytes. Different types of polar stationary phases are reviewed, including the possible retention mechanisms. Electrochromatographic separations of polar solutes, peptides, and basic pharmaceuticals on polar stationary phases are presented.  相似文献

Due to the better understanding of the processes taking place at the surface of the stationary phases, the number of ion-exchange materials for ion chromatography (IC) has increased tremendously over recent years. As a result, the multitude of commercially available columns today with their different selectivities for anion and cation chromatography is almost confusing. Hence, the aim of this article is to describe the different principles determining selectivity and ion-exchange capacity and to classify the various ion-exchange materials accordingly. To ensure a fair comparison of these columns, the selectivity differences are illustrated by showing separations of standards rather than individual samples.  相似文献

At the present time, more complex analyses of apolar compounds with similar chemical structures or of polar compounds, especially basic ones, having diverse properties require more selective stationary phases having better stabilities. This paper describes several new stationary phases with directed selectivities that were prepared by immobilizing two different phenyl group-containing siloxanes and a trifluoropropyl-containing siloxane onto chromatographic silica and, in the case of the fluorinated siloxane, onto zirconized silica, using thermal treatment or microware radiation. The chromatographic properties and stabilities of these new phases were determined and several applications were evaluated. The phenyl-containing phases showed excellent characteristics related to the separation of several different types of aromatic compounds while the fluorinated phases, which present a more polar character, revealed selectivity for the separation of positional isomers as well as for a mixture of basic pharmaceuticals. Stability tests indicate that immobilization of the polysiloxanes increases column lifetimes by making the stationary phases less susceptible to dissolution, while the phases immobilized with microwave radiation were somewhat more stable than those immobilized by thermal treatments.  相似文献

The potential of methacrylate-based mixed-mode monolithic stationary phases bearing sulfonic acid groups for the separation of positively charged analytes (alkylanilines, amino acids, and peptides) by capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is investigated. The retention mechanism of protonated alkylanilines as positively charged model solutes on these negatively charged mixed-mode stationary phases is investigated by studying the influence of mobile phase and stationary phase parameters on the corrected retention factor which was calculated by taking the electrophoretic mobility of the solutes into consideration. It is shown that both solvophobic and ion-exchange interactions contribute to the retention of these analytes. The dependence of the corrected retention factor on (1) the concentration of the counter ion ammonium and (2) the number of methylene groups in the alkyl chain of the model analytes investigated shows clearly that a one-site model (solvophobic and ion-exchange interactions take place simultaneously at a single type of site) has to be taken to describe the retention behaviour observed. Comparison of the CEC separation of these charged analytes with electrophoretic mobilities determined by open-tubular capillary electrophoresis shows that mainly chromatographic interactions (solvophobic and ion-exchange interactions) are responsible for the selectivity observed in CEC, while the electrophoretic migration of these analytes plays only a minor role.  相似文献

Two stationary phases attached to a silica hydride surface, cholesterol and bidentate C18, are investigated with a number of pharmaceutically related compounds in order to illustrate the various retention mechanisms that are possible for these bonded materials. The test solutes range from hydrophilic to hydrophobic based on log P (octanol/water partition coefficient) and pKa values. The mobile phases consist of acidified (formic and perchloric acid) water/methanol or water/ACN mixtures. Of particular interest are the high organic content mobile phase compositions where the retention would increase if the bonded material was operating in the aqueous normal phase (ANP) mode. Plots of retention factor (k) versus mobile phase composition are used to elucidate the retention mechanism. A number of examples are presented where solutes are retained based on RP, ANP, or dual retention mechanisms. The silica hydride-based stationary phases can also retain compounds in the organic normal phase.  相似文献

The kinetic performance of stabilized particle layers, particle membranes, and thin films for thin-layer chromatography is reviewed with a focus on how layer characteristics and experimental conditions affect the observed plate height. Forced flow and pressurized planar electrochromatography are identified as the best candidates to overcome the limited performance achieved by capillary flow for stabilized particle layers. For conventional and high performance plates band broadening is dominated by molecular diffusion at low mobile phase velocities typical of capillary flow systems and by mass transfer with a significant contribution from flow anisotropy at higher flow rates typical of forced flow systems. There are few possible changes to the structure of stabilized particle layers that would significantly improve their performance for capillary flow systems while for forced flow a number of avenues for further study are identified. New media for ultra thin-layer chromatography shows encouraging possibilities for miniaturized high performance systems but the realization of their true performance requires improvements in instrumentation for sample application and detection.  相似文献

Synthesis and properties of the multilayered stationary phases, which contain quaternary amine functional groups for the analysis of anions by ion chromatography, are described. The bonded phases were characterized by elemental analysis, solid-state (13)C NMR spectroscopy and chromatographic methods. The surface of 1,4-di(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxy)phenol (solid support) was coated with polymeric layers formed by condensation polymerization of primary amine with diepoxide. Each layer of the anion exchange stationary phase consists of copolymer of methylamine (MA) and 1,4-butanedioldiglycidyl ether (BDDE). A series of stationary phases with different numbers of polymerized layers were tested. The separation of an inorganic anions sample (F(-), Cl(-), NO(2)(-), Br(-), NO(3)(-), additionally HPO(4)(2-) and SO(4)(2-)) was performed. In the measurement, a hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate and their mixture were used as mobile phases.  相似文献

This article presents an overview on fluorocarbon stationary phases for liquid chromatography (LC) applications. Fluorocarbons developed as alternative reverse phases have revealed previously unknown separation mechanisms and special utilities. Solvophobicity and fluorophilicity of the fluorinated phases provide enhanced selectivity for organofluorine compounds. The dual normal- and reverse-phase characteristics make fluorinated phases suitable for analysis of polar pharmaceutical and biological samples such as proteins, peptides, nucleotides, steroids, and alkaloids. Fluorinated phases for other applications including supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), micellar electrokinetic liquid chromatography (MEKC), ion chromatography (IC), open tubular electrochromatography (OTEC), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are also highlighted.  相似文献

The purpose of the present work was to systematically study the chromatographic behaviour of different aromatic stationary phases in a subcritical fluid mobile phase. We attempted to assess the chemical origin of the differences in retention characteristics between the different columns. Various types of aromatic stationary phases, all commercially available, were investigated. The effect of the nature of the aromatic bonding on interactions between solute and stationary phases and between solute and carbon dioxide-methanol mobile phase was studied by the use of a linear solvation energy relationship (LSER): the solvation parameter model. This study was performed to provide a greater knowledge of the properties of these phases in subcritical fluid chromatography, and to allow a more rapid and efficient choice of aromatic stationary phase in regard of the chemical nature of the solutes to be separated. Charge transfer interactions naturally contribute to the retention on all these stationary phases but are completed by various other types of interactions, depending on the nature of the aromatic group. The solvation vectors were used to compare the different phase properties. In particular, the similarities in the chromatographic behaviour of porous graphitic carbon (PGC), polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) and aromatic-bonded silica stationary phases are evidenced.  相似文献

This article provides a summary of the development of ionic liquids as stationary phases for gas chromatography beginning with early work on packed columns that established details of the retention mechanism and established working methods to characterize selectivity differences compared with molecular stationary phases through the modern development of multi-centered cation and cross-linked ionic liquids for high-temperature applications in capillary gas chromatography. Since there are many reviews on ionic liquids dealing with all aspects of their chemical and physical properties, the emphasis in this article is placed on the role of gas chromatography played in the design of ionic liquids of low melting point, high thermal stability, high viscosity, and variable selectivity for separations. Ionic liquids provide unprecedented opportunities for extending the selectivity range and temperature-operating range of columns for gas chromatography, an area of separation science that has otherwise been almost stagnant for over a decade.  相似文献

Synthesis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes from the inside of silica capillaries by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) yields unique stationary phases for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). Although PHEMA brushes have only a small effect on the separation of a set of phenols and anilines, derivatization of PHEMA with ethylenediamine (en) allows baseline resolution of several anilines that co-elute from bare silica capillaries. Derivatization of PHEMA with octanoyl chloride (C8-PHEMA films) affords even better resolution in the separation of a series of phenols and anilines. Increasing the thickness of C8-PHEMA coatings by a factor of 2 enhances resolution for several solute pairs, presumably because of an increase in the effective stationary phase to mobile phase volume ratio. Thus, this work demonstrates that thick polymer brushes provide a tunable stationary phase with a much larger phase ratio than is available from monolayer wall coatings. Through appropriate choice of derivatizing reagents, these polymer brushes should allow separation of a wide range of neutral molecules as well as compounds with similar electrophoretic mobilities.  相似文献

Monolithic materials have become a well-established format for stationary phases in the field of capillary electrochromatography. Four types of monoliths, namely particle-fixed, silica-based, polymer-based, and molecularly imprinted monoliths, have been utilized as enantiomer-selective stationary phases in CEC. This review summarizes recent developments in the area of monolithic enantiomer-selective stationary phases for CEC. The preparative procedure and the characterization of these columns are highlighted. In addition, the disadvantages and limitations of different monolithic enantiomer-selective stationary phases in CEC are briefly discussed.  相似文献
