A fs regenerative amplifier based on Cr:LiCAF is demonstrated for the first time. With direct diode pumping, 8 μJ of pulse energy are obtained directly from the amplifier. When seeded by an Er-doped fiber laser, the amplified seed pulses are compressed down to 252 fs, limited by residual net third-order dispersion of the compression gratings and intracavity elements. Pulse broadening due to second- and third-order dispersion is theoretically investigated and compared to experimental results. Dispersion generated by the geometrical cavity arrangement is measured experimentally. Received: 19 November 2001 / Revised version: 28 January 2002 / Published online: 14 March 2002  相似文献

We demonstrate a multiple wavelength laser, employing wavelength dependent cavity losses, with up to four lasing wavelengths on the ITU-grid in the C-band and report on its stability characteristics. The linewidth of each wavelength was estimated to be less than 4 pm and we observed antiphase oscillations around 3 kHz and relaxation oscillations around 25 kHz. The antiphase oscillations in the multiwavelength laser lie on a limit cycle in a relative phase diagram. We present an analytic lumped model to determine the output power and relaxation oscillation frequency of the multiple lasing wavelengths in the Erbium doped fiber. The model is validated against our implementation of a multiwavelength ring laser.  相似文献

It is well known that saturating gain media can give rise to superluminal pulse propagation velocity. In most mode-locked lasers the effect is unmeasurably small and has not yet been directly demonstrated. We present experiments on the initial transient of an erbium fiber laser that show a dynamic shift in the propagation velocity to a value larger than the medium’s linear group velocity as the pulse builds up. 3D beam propagation numerical code and a newly developed optical mode solver were implemented for studies on the recently experimentally realized Yb fiber amplifier with 7-core hexagonal structure. It was found that the launched seven single-frequency beams matched with the cores converge to a wave field with permanently diminishing space beating patterns, but the result is sensitive to phases of separate beams. Namely, at a spread of phases of individual beams within a few tenths of radian, the convergence of the wave field to the in-phase mode is observed, while at phases random spread on the order of π the out-of-phase mode is dominating. Such behavior is observed at strong gain saturation in the cores. Both effects take place even if the guiding index of the cores fluctuates within a limited range. The mode solver predicts that the in-phase mode has the minimal small signal gain, and the gain of the out-of-phase mode is maximal one. This fact proves that there is no strict correlation between modal gains and amplification in strong saturated multi-core fiber. The smaller core index step significantly improves the convergence of the amplified radiation to the in-phase mode. An approach to the waveguide structure tailoring is described which assures the single in-phase mode stability.  相似文献

Starting from the modeling of isolated ions and ion-pairs, a closed form rate and power evolution equations for pulse amplification in high-concentration erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are constructed. According to the equations, the effects of ion-pairs on the performance of a high-concentration EDFA in steady state including upper-state population, ASE powers without input signal are analyzed numerically. Furthermore, the effects of ion-pairs on the dynamic characteristics of low-repetition-rate pulse amplification in the EDFA including the storied energy, output pulse energy and evolution of pulse waveform distortion are systematically studied by using the finite-difference method. The results show that the presence of the ion-pairs deteriorates amplifier performance, such as the upper-state population, ASE power, storied energy, output pulse energy, and saturated gain, etc. For the high-concentration EDFA, the optimum fiber length should be modified to achieve a better performance. The relations between the evolution of pulse waveform distortion or output pulse energy and the input pulse peak power are also discussed. The results can provide important guide for the design and optimization of the low-repetition-rate pulse amplification in high-concentration EDFAs.  相似文献

An actively mode-locked fiber ring laser based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is demonstrated to operate stably with a simple configuration. By forward injecting an easily-generated external pulse train, the mode-locked fiber laser can generate an optical-pulse sequence with pulsewidth about 6 ps and average output power about 7.9 mW. The output pulses show an ultra-low RMS jitter about 70.7 fs measured by a RF spectrum analyzer. The use of the proposed forward-injection configuration can realize the repetition-rate tunability from 1 to 15 GHz for the generated optical-pulse sequences. By employing a wavelength-tunable optical band-pass filter in the laser cavity, the operation wavelength of the designed SOA-based actively mode-locked fiber laser can be tuned continuously in a wide span between 1528 and 1565 nm. The parameters of external-injection optical pulses are studied experimentally to optimize the mode-locked fiber laser.  相似文献

We present experimental characteristics of an Yb3+-doped fiber ring laser operating with frequency-shifted feedback (FSF) through an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and seeded by both a stationary continuous-wave (CW) laser and spontaneous emission. We show the spectrum and output characteristics for operations with several effective gain bandwidths, as established by Fabry-Perot etalons inside the cavity. Observation using a high finesse Fabry-Perot interferometer shows that, as expected from earlier work, although the spectrum of the FSF laser without seeding is continuous, when seeded by a CW-laser the spectrum consists of a comb of discrete modes, each offset from the seed by an integer number of AOM frequency shifts. The experimental results are in excellent quantitative agreement with the theory developed earlier [L. Yatsenko, B.W. Shore, K. Bergmann, Opt. Commun. 236 (2004) 183].  相似文献

We demonstrate a harmonic mode-locked ytterbium-doped fibre ring laser, which consists of a polarization-sensitive isolator, two polarization controllers, two 976nm laser diodes as the pump source and a two-segment ytterbium-doped fibre. Utilizing an additive pulse mode-locked technique based on nonlinear polarization evolution, the ytterbium-doped fibre laser can operate in mode-locked state by adjusting the position of polarization controllers. The cavity fundamental repetition rate is 23.78 MHz. We also observe the second- and third-harmonic mode locking in the normal dispersion region, and their repetition rates are 47.66 MHz and 71.56 MHz, respectively. Over-driving of the saturable absorber in the harmonic mode-locking pulse is analysed and discussed in detail.  相似文献

We experimentally demonstrate a practical benefit of our proposed continuous-wave (CW) supercontinuum (SC) generating ring laser scheme in terms of low-cost device implementation and then investigate its output intensity noise property, as a further study to our previous paper of Ref. [J.H. Lee, Y. Takushima, K. Kikuchi, Opt. Lett. 30 (2005) 2599]. First, we implement a practical and low-cost CW SC laser using a double clad Er/Yb codoped fiber and a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF). Unlike the scheme in Ref. [J.H. Lee, Y. Takushima, K. Kikuchi, Opt. Lett. 30 (2005) 2599] the gain medium of an Er/Yb fiber is clad-pumped by low quality multimode pump LDs to underline the fact that our proposed scheme does not require any high power single-mode laser pump. A SC of a bandwidth larger than 470 nm is readily achieved. Next, we measure relative-intensity-noise (RIN) of the generated SC and compare it with that of a pumped Er/Yb fiber ASE. The SC laser is found to have a much higher RIN than the ASE due to the nonlinear amplification of quantum fluctuations both in the seed light oscillation and in the Raman scattering process.  相似文献

The Colquiriite crystals are attractive materials for directly diode-pumped femtosecond oscillators and amplifiers. Cr:LiSAF, Cr:LiSGAF and Cr:LiCAF are for the first time directly compared for their use in regenerative amplifiers both experimentally and theoretically. A maximum pulse energy of 10 μJ was obtained at an absorbed pump power of 1.1 W. A review of the work is given including a Cr:LiSAF seed oscillator, outlining specific needs for seeding.  相似文献

A mode-selection method based on a single-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) in the multicore fiber (MCF) lasers is presented. The designed PCF has a central core region formed by a missing air-hole, and three air-hole rings. With an appropriate choice of the design parameters of the PCF, the power coupling between the fundamental mode (FM) of the PCF and the fundamental MCF mode can be much higher than those between the FM and the other supermodes. As a result, the fundamental MCF mode has the maximum power reflection coefficient on the right-hand side of the MCF laser cavity, and dominates the output laser power. Since the maximum power of the fundamental MCF mode will lead to the desired laser beam profile, higher the fraction of the fundamental MCF mode power contained in the total output power contributes to higher beam quality. The numerical simulations show that the effectiveness of the fundamental MCF mode-selection is higher in the MCF lasers with the PCF as a mode-selection component than in the MCF lasers based on the free-space Talbot cavity method. Additionally, for the MCF amplifiers, an approach is presented to decrease the sensitivity of the amplifier performance to the variation of Gaussian beam waist utilizing the coupling between the Gaussian beam and the FM of the PCF. The numerical results show that this method can effectively increase the design flexibility for a broad range of the Gaussian beam waist.  相似文献

The 1-hole-missing and 7-hole-missing photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with flattened fundamental modes (FMs) are proposed by introducing a layer of up-doped silica into the core of the PCFs. The transverse mode competitions are compared between the 7-hole-missing PCF lasers with and without flattened-FMs. The numerical results show that the flattened-FM PCF lasers can support the single transverse mode operation, even for a large value of the ratio of air hole diameter to the spacing between holes (up to 0.53).  相似文献

It was reported earlier that it is possible to obtain large pulse advancement with minimum pulse distortion in fast-light propagation through an erbium-doped fiber amplifier by placing the pulse on top of a mutually coherent constant background field. Here we show that comparable distortion reduction can be obtained through use of a mutually incoherent background field, a procedure that could be much more readily implemented under many circumstances. We also show that further improvement can be obtained by means of adjusting the pulse power, and for a pulse-power of the distortion decreases about 56% from 0.56 with no background while the fractional advancement decreases only about 3% from 0.16.  相似文献

We report passive harmonic mode locking of a high-power Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser. 680-fs, 48-pJ pulses are emitted at the repetition rate of 2.13 GHz, while the free spectral range of the cavity is 23.4 MHz. Results indicate a supermode suppression of more than 25 dB.  相似文献

We reported the Ho:GdVO4 laser pumped by Tm-doped laser with a fiber Bragg grating. 2.03 W continuous-wave Ho:GdVO4 laser output power is obtained under 10.5 W incident pump power, with the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency and slope efficiency of 19.3% and 32.3%, respectively, at 7 °C. We can see that, the lower the temperature is, the better the laser output character is. The beam quality factor is M2 ∼ 1.29 measured by the traveling knife-edge method.  相似文献

A stable and short pulse train of ∼100 MHz repetition frequency was obtained from an erbium doped fiber laser excited by a “continuous” semiconductor laser and by using a linear cavity defined by a Bragg grating pair. The operation frequency of the fiber laser was greater (∼5-15 times) than the cavity round-trip frequency. Emission properties obtained from the erbium doped fiber laser were correlated with those taken from the pump laser, which presented a particular optical noise (very short pulses) added to the continuous emission. From the temporal and radio-frequency analysis of both systems, we conclude that the pump emission characteristics are the responsible of the fiber laser pulsed behaviour.  相似文献

In this paper, we study on optical bistability behaviors in a double-coupler ring resonator, in which an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is inserted into the ring for counteracting the loss by the gain of EDFA. The two groups of transmitted and reflected optical bistability loops under different parameters are investigated symmetrically. According to our optimum design of this new optical bistable device, the switching power can be less than 60 mW.  相似文献

The modifications of an angular spectrum of the intense Bessel J0 and J1 beams caused by self-action in the medium with large cubic nonlinearity are investigated. The appearance of an outer ring of triple radius was observed. The phenomenon can be explained as Bragg diffraction of Bessel beam on Bessel lattice in nonlinear medium. Experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions.  相似文献
