A multi-wavelength microsphere laser system, using a chirped fibre Bragg grating and a microsphere resonator as wavelength-selective elements and a high dopant erbium doped fibre as the gain material, has been successfully demonstrated. The multi-wavelength generation of the laser system arises from both the microsphere whispering gallery mode selection and from the additional Raman scattering inside the microsphere cavity when the erbium laser is operating at resonance with the whispering gallery modes. Through an appropriate design and fabrication of a microsphere and of a fibre taper, a selective multi-wavelength fibre laser has been realized when the pump power is above threshold required. The laser output lines created have shown much narrower linewidths than those from conventional fibre lasers and these characteristics are particularly suitable for the range of sensor applications envisaged in the work. 相似文献

Shift of resonance frequency in microsphere optical resonator due to attachment of a desirable particle is obtained. Our 3-D finite element numerical method (FEM) simulations’ results show the path of light through microsphere and its variation due to attachment of particle. It is apparent that after attachment of particle to microsphere's surface, light is inclined to pass through the particle. Subsequently, the path of light becomes longer than previous. Because of this phenomenon, the resonance wavelength shifts to longer wavelengths. It is shown that microsphere optical resonator is a prominent biosensor for single virus detection since we applied characteristics of virus for particle in our simulations. Response of this biosensor depends on the characteristics of particle like its radius as we show in this article. Transmission spectrum of fiber which reveals a selected resonance frequency, have been studied in the frequency range of 106.3 to 107 THz under three different sizes of particles. The results show that the amount of frequency shift rises by enhancement of particle's size. 相似文献

An all-fibre Tm:Ho laser system is reported, using a 1600 nm Er fibre pump laser and 0.3 m length of the fibre through a two-stage optimization of both the pump source and laser configuration to achieve a low threshold operation. As a result a low threshold power of 33 mW and a slope efficiency of 0.6% have been achieved, in laser operation at a wavelength of 1870 nm and a cross-comparison with 785 nm laser diode pumping has been made. 相似文献

The silica microspheres coated with a thin layer of Er-doped phosphate glass are fabricated and whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) with quality factor of 8 × 106 in the 780 nm band are obtained. We demonstrate that the microsphere can form single-mode and multi-mode microlaser in communication-band with a pumping laser of wavelength 780 nm band. Moreover, the representative lateral emission distributed modes in the microsphere can be directly observed via the upconverted photoluminescence. 相似文献

Modern WDM telecommunication systems require stable and calibrated laser sources. In this paper, we present examples of such
lasers based on erbium doped fibres, i.e., discretely tunable and multiwavelength ring lasers. For the first case, tuning
is possible due to a tunable Bragg grating overlapping spectrally the third telecommunication window (1550 nm). When a Fabry-Perot
etalon is inserted into the cavity, discrete tunable operation with appropriate spacing between operating wavelengths is possible.
Different free spectral ranges (FSR) of applied etalons ensured operation at a wavelength spacing 0.4 nm, 0.8 nm or 1.6 nm,
respectively. When an acoustooptical Bragg frequency shifter was inserted together with the Fabry-Perot etalon, the stable

To improve the performance of double clad high power fibre lasers, inner cladding design plays a significant role. A triangular inner cladding and silica structure second cladding with large air holes go acquire high inner cladding numerical aperture are designed. Single mode and high power output of the fibre lasers need the double clad Yb doped fibre with large core. A fibre with annular refractive index distribution core and low numerical aperture to acquire a large mode area fibre core is designed and fabricated. Furthermore co-doping with aluminium (A1) has been used to improve the solubility of ytterbium (Yb) into silicate network, and the core absorption coefficients of two Yb doped fibres are compared with different A1 concentration experimentally. 相似文献

Peculiarities of internal optical field resonant excitation inside micron-sized spherical transparent dielectric cavity illuminated by a train of ultrashort laser pulses are investigated. On an example of water microdroplet is shown that optimal tuning of incident radiation to a selected high-Q resonance electromagnetic cavity mode can be realized by varying temporal interpulse interval in a laser train together with linear frequency modulation of every pulse (chirp). Efficiency of resonant particle excitation by a chirped picosecond pulses train can be considerably increased as compared to unchirped pulse train and CW excitation also. 相似文献

Laser sources with unique properties can be produced using a combination of nonlinear Brillouin gain in single-mode optical fibre (SMOF) and gain in erbium-doped fibre (EDF). Narrow bandwidth nonlinear gain from stimulated Brillouin scattering in SMOF determines the wavelength of operation, and gain in EDF allows efficient operation and large power extraction. Various cascading schemes based on the Brillouin/erbium fibre laser (BEFL) as well as distinctive multi-wavelength versions of the BEFL were proposed, being able to produce 10GHz combs of over 30 lines at 1550 nm. These multi-wavelength sources may be of use in future dense wavelength-division multiplexing systems. We explore fundamental aspects of BEFLs configured to generate multiple wavelengths with particular focus on the effects of the Brillouin and EDF pumps on the number of lines and the relationship between the intensities of the individual lines in the comb. 相似文献

利用Raman散射谱研究了GaN注Er以及Er+O共注样品的振动模,并讨论了共注入O对Er离子发光的影响. 在Raman散射谱中,对于注Er的GaN样品出现了300 cm-1和670 cm-1两个新的Raman峰,而对于Er+O共注样品,除了上述两个峰外,在360 cm-1处出现了另外一个新的峰,其中300 cm-1峰可以用disorder-activated Raman scattering (DARS)来解释,670 cm-1峰是由于与N空位相关的缺陷引起的,而360 cm-1峰是由O注入引起的缺陷络合物产生的. 由于360 cm-1模的缺陷出现,从而导致Er+O共注入GaN薄膜红外光致发光(PL)强度的下降.

Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) have been exploited for a broad range of sensing applications. However, the vast majority of WGM sensors consist of passive resonators, requiring complex interrogation systems to be employed, ultimately limiting their practicality. Active resonators containing a gain medium, allowing remote excitation and collection of the WGM‐modulated fluorescence spectra, have emerged as an alternative to passive resonators. Although research is still in its infancy, recent progress has reduced the performance gap between the two paradigms, fueled by the potential for new applications that could not previously be realized. Here, recent developments in sensors based on active WGM microresonators are reviewed, beginning with a discussion of the theory of fluorescence‐based and lasing WGMs, followed by a discussion of the variety of gain media, resonator architectures, and emerging sensing applications. We conclude with a discussion of the prospects and future directions for improving active WGM sensors.

We analyze theoretically both the fundamental and the technical quantum limitations of the sensitivity of a passive resonant optical gyroscope based on a high finesse monolithic optical microcavity. We show that the quantum back action associated with the resonantly enhanced optical cross- and self-phase modulation results in the standard quantum limit of the angle random walk of the gyroscope, which reaches approximately 0.2 deg/hr1/2 for a millimeter scale CaF2 whispering gallery mode resonator based device. 相似文献
