In this paper, Lorentz forces are proved to be able to suppress separation in flows over hydrofoils. Furthermore, a differential equation of pressure distributions on the hydrofoil surface is derived, from which it is found that BVF (boundary vortex flux) σ is a suitable criterion for describing the lift coefficient variations during the electromagnetic control process. According to our numerical results, the periodic variations of lift for a hydrofoil at an attack angle of 17 ° are analyzed and its inherent mechanism is discussed in detail with the concept of BVE On the other hand, the effects of Lorentz force on the hydrofoil's lift are investigated both experimentally and numerically for different magnitudes and locations.  相似文献

We investigate numerically the electromagnetic control of seawater flows over an infinitely long circular cylinder. Stripes of electrodes and magnets, wrapped around the cylinder surface, produce a tangential body force (Lorentz force) that stabilizes the flow. This mechanism delays flow separation, reduces drag and lift, and finally suppresses the von Kármán vortex street. Results from two-dimensional simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations in a range 10<Re<300 and Lorentz force calculations are presented. Emphasis is placed on the disclosure of physical phenomena as well as a quantitative detection of the flow field and forces. It is shown that the drag strongly depends on the geometry of the electromagnetic actuator and on its location at the cylinder surface. The effect of flow control increases with larger Reynolds numbers, since the boundary layer thickness and the penetration depth of the Lorentz force are closely connected.  相似文献

Time periodic wall parallel Lorentz forces have been used to excite the separated flow on the suction side of an inclined flat plate. Experiments for a Reynolds number of 104 and an angle of attack of α = 13° are reported. The controlled flow is characterised by a small number of relatively large scale vortices, which are related to the control mechanism. The influence of the main parameters, i.e. the excitation frequency, amplitude and wave form on the suction side flow structures was investigated by analysing time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) measurements using continuous wavelet analysis for vortex detection and characterisation. Statistical analysis of the coherent structures of the flow was performed on a large amount of data samples.  相似文献

Mean lift generation on cylinders induced with plasma actuators   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bluff body flow control based on plasma actuators requires suitable strategies to attain the desired objectives. The strategy selection becomes more critical in situations where the free airstream velocity is much higher than the maximum velocity that can be produced by the flow control device. In this work, we report recent efforts to produce on a circular cylinder forces in direction transverse to the free flow. Free stream velocities considered in this work are as high as 45 m/s ((Re(O) 1 × 105), which result much higher values than the maximum velocities (about 5 m/s) usually induced by the kind of plasma actuator here considered (dielectric barrier type). Our strategy consisted on promoting asymmetries on boundary layer separation with a four electrode arrangement. In our experiments, we measured drag and lift forces and explored the effect of exciting the flow with steady and non-steady actuations. The device demonstrated authority to induce significant transverse forces and optimal frequencies resulted in all cases close to the vortex shedding frequency.  相似文献

The boundary layer flow over a uniformly moving vertical surface with suction or injection is studied when the buoyancy forces assist or oppose the flow. Similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to power law temperature and velocity boundary conditions. The effect is of various governing parameters, such as Prandtl number Pr, temperature exponent n, injection parameter d, and the mixed convection parameter λ=Gr/Re2, which determine the velocity and temperature distributions and the heat transfer coefficient, are studied. The heat transfer coefficient increases as λ assisting the flow for all d at Pr=0.72 however, for n=−1 it decreases sharply with λ. On the other hand, increasing λ has no effect on heat transfer coefficient for Pr=10 at n=0, and 1 for almost all values of d studied. However, for n=−1 it has similar effect as for Pr=0.72. It is also found that Nusselt number increases as n increases for fixed λ and d. Received on 26 March 1997  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of Prandtl number on the steady magneto-convection around a centrally located adiabatic body inside a square enclosure are numerically investigated. Two-dimensional nonlinear governing equations are discretized using the control volume method and hybrid scheme. The equations are solved using SIMPLER algorithm. The results are displayed in the form of streamlines and isotherms when the Rayleigh number varies between 103 and 106, the Hartmann number changes between 0 and 100 and the Prandtl number ranges between 0.005 and 0.1. The ratio of the buoyancy force to the Lorentz force (Ra/Ha 2) is introduced as an index to compare the contribution of natural convection and magnetic field strength on heat transfer. The results obtained from numerical modeling show that the Prandtl number has not considerable effect on heat transfer at low Rayleigh numbers. The effect of magnetic field strength on convection is increased by increasing Prandtl number. The effect of Prandtl number on the average Nusselt number in the presence of a magnetic field is less than the case without a magnetic field.  相似文献

The effect of an isolated roughness element on the forces on a sphere was examined for a Reynolds number range of 5 × 104 < Re < 5 × 105 using a novel sting-mounted sphere apparatus. The roughness element was a circular cylinder, and its width and height was varied to be 1, 2, and 4% of the sphere diameter. At subcritical Re, a lateral force is produced in the direction of the roughness, while at supercritical Re, the force is in the opposite direction. This is caused by asymmetric boundary layer separation, as shown using particle image velocimetry. At supercritical Re, a roughness element that is only 1% the sphere diameter produces a lift to drag ratio of almost one. It was found that the isolated roughness element has the largest effect on the lateral forces when it is located between a streamwise angle of about 40° and 80°. In addition to the mean forces, the unsteady forces were also measured. It was found that at subcritical Re, vortex shedding is aligned to the plane of the roughness element. In addition, the probability distribution of the forces was nearly Gaussian for subcritical Re, but for supercritical Re, the skewness and kurtosis deviate from Gaussian, and the details are dependent on the roughness size. A simple model developed for the vortical structure formed behind the roughness element can be extended to explain aspects of nominally smooth sphere flow, in which external disturbances perturb the sphere boundary layer in an azimuthally local sense. These results also form the basis of comparison for an investigation into the effectiveness of a moving isolated roughness element for manipulating sphere flow.  相似文献

In this paper, the electro-magnetic control of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder is investigated numerically based on the stream function–vorticity equations in the exponential–polar coordinates attached on the moving cylinder for Re=150. The effects of the instantaneous wake geometries and the corresponding cylinder motion on the hydrodynamic forces for one entire period of vortex shedding are discussed using a drag–lift phase diagram. The drag–lift diagram is composed of the upper and lower closed curves due to the contributions of the vortex shedding but is magnified, translated and turned under the action of the cylinder motion. The Lorentz force for controlling the vibration cylinder is classified into the field Lorentz force and the wall Lorentz force. The symmetric field Lorentz force will symmetrize the flow passing over the cylinder and decreases the lift oscillation, which, in turn, suppresses the VIV, whereas the wall Lorentz force has no effect on the lift. The cylinder vibration increases as the work performed by the lift dominates the energy transfer. Otherwise, the cylinder vibration decreases. If the net transferred energy per motion is equal to zero, the cylinder will vibrate steadily or be fixed.  相似文献

Vortex shedding in the wake of two-dimensional bluff bodies is usually accompanied by three dimensional instabilities. These instabilities result in streamwise and vertical vorticity components which occur at a certain spanwise wavelength. The spanwise wavelength of the instabilities (λZ) depends on several parameters, including profile geometry and Reynolds number. The objective of the present work is to study the three dimensional wake instabilities for a blunt trailing edge profiled body, comprised of an elliptical leading edge and a rectangular trailing edge, and to manipulate these instabilities to control the aerodynamic forces. Results of numerical simulations of flow around the body at Re(d) = 400, 600, and 1000, as well as planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) flow visualizations at Re(d) = 600 and 1000 are analyzed to determine the wake vorticity structure and λZ. Based on the findings of these analyses, an active flow control mechanism for attenuation of the fluctuating aerodynamic forces on the body is proposed. The flow control mechanism is comprised of a series of trailing edge injection ports distributed across the span, with a spacing equal to λZ. Injection of a secondary flow leads to amplification of the three dimensional instabilities and disorganization of the von Kármán vortex street. Numerical simulations indicate that the flow control mechanism can attenuate the fluctuating aerodynamic forces at lower Reynolds numbers (Re(d) = 400 and 600) where λZ is constant in time. However, the control mechanism loses its effectiveness at Re(d) = 1000, due to the temporal variations of λZ.  相似文献

Two-dimensional steady-state thermal concentration convection in a rectangular porous cavity is simulated numerically. The temperature and concentration gradients are horizontal and the buoyancy forces act either in the same or in opposite directions. The flow through the porous medium is described by the Darcy-Brinkman or Forchheimer equations. The SIMPLER numerical algorithm based on the finite volume approach is used for solving the problem in the velocity-pressure variables.Numerous series of calculations were carried out over the range Ra t =3·106 and 3·107, 10-6 < Da < 1, 1 < N < 20, Le=10 and 100, where Ra, Da, Le, and N are the Rayleigh, Darcy, and Lewis numbers and the buoyancy ratio, respectively. It is shown that the main effect of the presence of the porous medium is to reduce the heat and mass transfer and attenuate the flow field with decrease in permeability. For a certain combination of the Ra, Le, and N numbers the flow has a multicellular structure. The mean Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are presented as functions of the governing parameters.  相似文献

We conducted a large eddy simulation (LES) of a locally applied electromagnetic control of turbulent thermal convection of an electrically conductive fluid (electrolyte solution) inside of a slender enclosure. Generic configurations, consisting of two or three magnets of opposite polarities located below the lower wall, and two oppositely charged electrodes along the side walls, are considered. The neutral situation (pure thermal convection) is selected to be in turbulent regime at Ra = 107, Pr = 7. A magnetically extended Smagorinsky type model for the subgrid turbulent stresses and a simple-gradient diffusion model for the subgrid turbulent heat fluxes are used. Different intensities of applied DC current through electrodes are imposed. The effects of the resulting Lorentz force on flow, turbulence reorganisation and wall-heat transfer are analysed. It is demonstrated that significant flow and turbulence structure reorganisation takes place in the proximity of the lower horizontal wall and in the central parts of the enclosure—even for weak DC current of I = 1 A. Significant turbulence increase, generated by the elevated electromagnetic mixing, produced significant enhancements of the wall-heat transfer—up to 70% for the 2-magnet configuration.  相似文献

Linear control semigroupsL=Gl(d,R) are associated with semilinear control systems of the form whereA:R m gl(d,R) is continuous in some open set containingU. The semigroupL then corresponds to the solutions with piecewise constant controls, i.e., L acts in a natural way onR d {0}, on the sphereS d–1, and on the projective spaceP d–1. Under the assumption that the group generated byL in Gl(d,R) acts transitively onP d–1, we analyze the control structure of the action ofL onP d–1: We characterize the sets inP d–1, where the system is controllable (the control sets) using perturbation theory of eigenvalues and (generalized) eigenspaces of the matrices g L For nonlinear control systems on finitedimensional manifoldsM, we study the linearization on the tangent bundleTM and the projective bundleP M via the theory of Morse decompositions, to obtain a characterization of the chain-recurrent components of the control flow onU×PM. These components correspond uniquely to the chain control sets onP M, and they induce a subbundle decomposition ofU×TM. These results are used to characterize the chain control sets ofL acting onP d–1 and to compare the control sets and chain control sets.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DMS 8813976 and DFG Grant Co 124/6-1.  相似文献

This paper presents results on the combined effect of thermo‐solutal buoyancy forces on the recirculatory flow behavior in a horizontal channel with backward‐facing step and the ensuing impact on heat and mass transfer phenomena. The governing equations for double diffusive mixed convection are represented in velocity–vorticity form of momentum equations, velocity Poisson equations, energy and concentration equations. Galerkin's finite‐element method has been employed to solve the governing equations. Recirculatory flow fields with heat and mass transfer are simulated for opposing and aiding thermo‐solutal buoyancy forces by assuming suitable boundary conditions for energy and concentration equations. The effect of Richardson number (0.1?Ri?10) and buoyancy ratio (?10?N?10) on the recirculation bubble and Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are studied in detail. For Richardson number greater than unity, distinct variations in the gradients of Nusselt number and Sherwood number with buoyancy ratio are observed for flow regimes with opposing and aiding buoyancy forces. The evolution of wake structures and variation of the forces on a flat plate in harmonic oscillatory and in-line combined flows are obtained numerically by improved discrete vortex method. For the oscillatory oncoming flow cases, wyenKc number varies from 2 to 40, the vortex pattern changes from a “harmonic wave” shaped (in a range of smallKc number) to a slight inclined “harmonic wave” shaped (in a range of moderateKc numbers), then to inclined vortex clusters with an angle of 50° to the oncoming flow direction (atKc=20), at last, asKc number becomes large, the vortex pattern is like a normal Karman vortex street. The well predicted drag and inertia force coefficients are obtained, which are more close to the results of Keulegan & Carpenter's experiment as compared with previous vortex simulation by other authors. The existence of minimum point of inertia force coefficientC m nearKc=20 is also well predicted and this phenomenon can be interpreted according to the vortex structure. For steady-oscillatory in-line combined flow cases, the vortex modes behave like a vortex street, exhibit a “longitudinal wave” structure, and a vortex cluster shape corresponding to the ratios ofU m toU 0 which are ofO (10−1)O(1) andO(10), respectively. The effect on the prediction of forces on the flat plate from the disturbance component in a combined flow has been demonstrated qualitatively. In addition to this, the lock in phenomenon of vortex shedding has been checked. The project supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China & LNM, Institute of Mechanics, CAS  相似文献

An investigation of the effect of the local electromagnetic body force on the flow behavior around a circular cylinder is conducted. The electromagnetic force is applied locally on the cylinder surface in the range of 70–130° from the stagnation point along the cylinder circumference in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. The numerical results predict that the Lorentz force applied in the circumferential direction on the cylinder moves the separation point rearward, and reduces the drag. To validate the numerical results, an experiment is conducted with a circular cylinder of 5 cm diameter. The electrodes and permanent magnets are flush mounted on the cylinder in such a way that the Lorentz force is generated in the circumferential direction. Flow visualization with polystyrene particles and direct drag measurement using strain gages are made. The fluid used is natural sea water of electric conductivity of about 4 (Ω m)-1. Induction effect can be neglected in the present investigation due to the low flow speed and the Lorentz force is proportional to E×B where E is an applied electric field and B is a magnetic field. A numerical study has been conducted to determine the heat transfer characteristics and flow patterns which develop around a rotating, heated vertical cylinder enclosed within a stationary concentric cylinder. A tall annulus (aspect ratio of 10) with fixed, adiabatic horizontal end-plates and a radius ratio of 0·5 has been considered. Furthermore, the effect that the introduction of buoyancy forces by heating the inner cylinder has on the development of the Taylor vortex flow is examined. It is observed that the formation of the Taylor vortices is delayed until the rotational parameter σ = Gr/Re2 has a value below unity for any given Reynolds number Re which is above the critical value Recrit for the formation of Taylor vortices in an isothermal flow. Also, the Taylor cells first appear at the top of the annulus. As σ is gradually decreased below unity, bifurcations to other states are observed. The final structure of the secondary flow is noticeably distorted in the mixed-convection mode, with the size of the Taylor cells varying greatly along the height of the annulus. This distortion diminishes as σ is further decreased, until the isothermal flow pattern is nearly recovered below σ = 0·01.  相似文献

Summary A method is described for the measurements of small forces (10−5 – 10−3 newton) on a sample weighing a few grams. This sample is placed on a bar which is fixed on the turning coil of an ordinary switchboard current meter. The force on the sample can be compensated by the Lorentz force on the current through the coil. This method avoids a great many of the usual constructional difficulties of such apparatus and leads to a robust instrument which is easy to handle and to. automatize, thus being of interest for use outside the laboratory. Especially this possibility has induced us to choose as an example a magnetic susceptibility balance. For magnets of field strength up to 20 000 oerstedt the precision obtained for the measured susceptibility amounts to one tenth of a percent.  相似文献

Computational results for control of flow past a circular cylinder using small rotating cylinders are presented. A well-proven stabilized finite-element method, that has been applied to various flow problems earlier, is utilized to solve the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the primitive variables formulation. The formulation is first applied to study flow past an isolated rotating cylinder. Excellent match with experimental results, reported earlier, is observed. It is found that in purely two-dimensional flows, very high lift coefficients can be realized. However, it is observed, via three-dimensional Navier–Stokes simulations, that the end-effects and centrifugal instabilities along the cylinder span lead to a loss of lift and increase in drag. The aspect ratio of the cylinder plays an important role. The flow past a bluff body with two rotating control cylinders is studied using 2-D numerical simulations. The effect of the Reynolds number is studied by carrying out simulations for Re=102and 104. Finite element meshes with an adequate number of grid points are employed to resolve the flow in the gap between the main and control cylinders. Two values of the gap are considered: 0·01D and 0·075 D, where D is the diameter of the main cylinder. It is observed that when the control cylinders rotate at high speed, such that the tip speed is 5 times the free-stream speed, the flow at Re=100 achieves a steady state. For Re=104, even though the flow remains unsteady, the wake is highly organized and narrower compared to the one without control. The results are in good agreement with the flow-visualization studies conducted by other researchers for bluff bodies using similar control concepts. In all the cases, a significant reduction in the overall drag coefficient and the unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on the main cylinder is observed. Results are also presented for the power requirements of the system for translation and rotation. It is found that the coefficient of power required for the rotation of control cylinders is significant for Re=100 but negligible for Re=104flow. The size of the gap is found to be more critical for the Re=104flows. This study brings out the relevance of the gap as a design parameter for such flow control devices.  相似文献

Controlled interactions between fluidic actuators and the cross flow over the aft end of a wire-mounted axisymmetric wind tunnel bluff body model (ReD=2.3·105) are exploited for modification of the near wake dynamics, and the consequent global aerodynamic loads. Actuation is effected using an array of four aft-facing synthetic jet modules through narrow, azimuthally-segmented slots that are equally distributed around the perimeter of the tail end. The model is supported by eight wires, each including a miniature inline force transducer for measurements of the time-resolved tension. The model’s position is varied in a prescribed trajectory by synchronous activation of shape memory alloy (SMA) segments in each of the mounting wires, and the aerodynamic forces and moments are manipulated over a range of pitch attitude. The effectiveness of the flow control approach is demonstrated by decoupling of the wake response from the body’s pitch motion at a low pitch frequency (k=0.013). It is shown that, under the active control, the wake symmetry can be restored or its asymmetry can be amplified.  相似文献
