Molecular conformation, quantum tunneling, and hydrogen bonding play important roles in various photochemical processes. We have studied a number of small molecules possessing rotational isomerism (HONO, formic acid, acetic acid, etc.) isolated in noble-gas solid matrices. Selective vibrational excitation efficiently promotes the conformational change in the excited molecule, which allows preparation of higher-energy conformers. Stability of the higher-energy conformers is often limited by quantum tunneling of hydrogen as observed for some carboxylic acids (formic, acetic, etc.). The tunneling mechanism is supported by the strong H/D isotope effect and characteristic temperature dependence with a clear low-temperature limit. The reaction barrier height is an important factor in a tunneling process; however, other factors also play an essential role. The energy mismatch between the initial state of the higher-energy conformer and accepting state of the ground-state conformer is probably important. Hydrogen bonding can change tunneling decay rate of unstable conformers. The transcis formic acid dimer was prepared by vibrational excitation of the transtrans form in neon and argon matrices. Tunneling decay of cis formic acid is substantially slower in the dimeric form compared to monomer, especially in solid neon. This stabilization effect is explained by a complexation-induced increase of reaction barrier, which is confirmed computationally. The complex between cis formic acid and water was prepared in an argon matrix and found to be stable at low-temperatures. These results show that intrinsically unstable conformational structures can be thermodynamically stabilized in asymmetrical hydrogen-bonded network. This effect occurs when the energy difference between conformers is smaller than the hydrogen bond interaction energy, which allows chemistry of unstable conformers to be studied.  相似文献

The complexes of formic acid (HCOOH, FA) with carbon dioxide are studied by infrared spectroscopy in an argon matrix. Two trans-FA···CO(2) and one cis-FA···CO(2) complexes are experimentally identified while the calculations at the MP2(full)/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory predict one more minimum for the cis-FA···CO(2) complex. The complex of the higher-energy conformer cis-FA with CO(2) is prepared by vibrational excitation of the ground-state trans-FA conformer combined with thermal annealing. The lifetime of the cis-FA···CO(2) complex in an argon matrix at 10 K is 2 orders of magnitude longer than that of the cis-FA monomer. This big difference is explained by the computational results which show a higher stabilization barrier for the complex. The solvation effects in solid argon are theoretically estimated and their contribution to the stabilization barriers of the higher-energy species is discussed. The relative barrier transmissions for hydrogen tunneling in the cis-FA···CO(2) complex and cis-FA monomer are in good agreement with the experimental decay rates.  相似文献

The conformations of 2-cyclopenten-1-ol (2CPOL) have been investigated by high-level theoretical computations and infrared spectroscopy. The six conformational minima correspond to specific values of the ring-puckering and OH internal rotation coordinates. The conformation with the lowest energy possesses intramolecular π-type hydrogen bonding. A second conformer with weaker hydrogen bonding has somewhat higher energy. Ab initio coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD) was used with the cc-pVTZ (triple-ζ) basis set to calculate the two-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) governing the conformational dynamics along the ring-puckering and internal rotation coordinates. The two conformers with the hydrogen bonding lie about 300 cm−1 (0.8 kcal/mole) lower in energy than the other four conformers. The lowest energy conformation has a calculated distance of 2.68 Å from the hydrogen atom on the OH group to the middle of the C=C double bond. For the other conformers, this distance is at least 0.3 Å longer. The infrared spectrum in the O-H stretching region agrees well with the predicted frequency differences between the conformers and shows the conformers with the hydrogen bonding to have the lowest values. The infrared spectra in other regions arise mostly from the two hydrogen-bonded species.  相似文献

The authors report theoretical results on structure, bonding, energy, and infrared spectra of iodine dimer radical anion hydrated clusters, I(2) (-).nH(2)O (n=1-8), based on a systematic study following density functional theory. Several initial guess structures are considered for each size cluster to locate minimum energy conformers with a Gaussian 6-311++G(d,p) split valence basis function (triple split valence 6-311 basis set is applied for iodine). It is observed that three different types of hydrogen bonded structures, namely, symmetrical double hydrogen bonding, single hydrogen bonding, and interwater hydrogen bonding structures, are possible in these hydrated clusters. But conformers having interwater hydrogen bonding arrangements are more stable compared to those of double or single hydrogen bonded structures. It is also noticed that up to four solvent H(2)O units can reside around the solute in interwater hydrogen bonding network. At the maximum six H(2)O units are independently linked to the dimer anion having four double hydrogen bonding and two single hydrogen bonding, suggesting the hydration number of I(2) (-) to be 6. However, conformers having H(2)O units independently linked to the iodine dimer anion are not the most stable structures. In all these hydrated clusters, the odd electron is found to be localized over two I atoms and the two atoms are bound by a three-electron hemi bond. The solvation, interaction, and vertical detachment energies are calculated for all I(2) (-).nH(2)O clusters. Energy of interaction and vertical detachment energy profiles show stepwise saturation, indicating geometrical shell closing in the hydrated clusters, but solvation energy profile fails to show such behavior. A linear correlation is observed between the calculated energy of interaction and vertical detachment energy. It is observed that formation of I(2) (-)-water cluster induces significant shifts from the normal O-H stretching modes of isolated H(2)O. However, bending mode of H(2)O remains insensitive to the successive addition of solvent H(2)O units. Weighted average energy profiles and IR spectra are reported for all the hydrated clusters based on the statistical population of individual conformers at room temperature.  相似文献

We study the conformational reorganization of formic acid (FA) in solid neon and report the higher-energy cis-FA monomer and one form of the trans-cis FA dimers. They were prepared by selective vibrational excitation of the trans-FA monomer and trans-trans dimer. The proton tunneling decay of cis-FA monomer is surprisingly very fast in solid neon, two orders of magnitude faster than in solid argon. It was also found that the stability of the trans-cis dimer against proton tunneling is enormously enhanced in solid neon compared to the monomer (by a factor of approximately 300). These results are discussed in terms of matrix solvation and hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

B3LYP/6-311+G* theoretical calculations have been employed to investigate the complexes involving hydrogen bonding between guanine and acrylamide. Nine stable conformers were obtained by geometry optimization without imaginary frequencies. The calculation results revealed that the stability of these complexes was accounted for by the intensity and numbers of hydrogen bonds between guanine and acrylamide, which was proved by the energy analysis and the topological properties at the critical points. In these optimized complexes, the complex with three hydrogen bonds was the most stable one because it offered the biggest binding energy. Clearly, the hydrogen bonds appear to be crucial in the stability of these complexes. This work will provide another nosogenetic interpretation besides the covalent interactions between DNA and acrylamide, which are of interest for studying DNA mutation.  相似文献

Three low-lying conformers of the hydrogen maleate anions (HMAs) regarding cis-HMA(HB) having the O-...HO intramolecular hydrogen bond (HB), cis-HMA(nHB) without the HB, and trans-HMA are studied by density functional theory (B3LYP) combined with natural bond orbital (NBO) and atoms-in-molecules (AIM) analyses. The photoelectron spectra of cis- and trans-HMA conformers recorded by Woo et al. (J. Phys. Chem. A 2005, 109, 10633) are reassigned on the basis of the present electron propagator theory calculations, indicating the significant energy differences between the Dyson orbitals and canonical molecular orbitals due to the electron-correlation and orbital relaxation effects considered in the electron propagator theory. The NBO associated with the natural resonance theory analyses and AIM electron topological study show that the strong O-...HO in cis-HMA(HB) has the remarkable characteristics of three-center four-electron hyperbond, and the bonding strength of ca. 30 kcal/mol is recommended with the reference calculations of the HO-...HOH complex. The further calculations for the microhydrated cis-HMA(HB) clusters indicate that the O-...HO bonding strength decreases in water solution.  相似文献

Ab initio computations indicate the existence of several stable and some unstable conformers in isolated α and β glucose molecules. All of the lower-energy conformers exhibit a strikingly regular pattern of internal hydrogen bonding. Five such stable structures have been identified for each of the α and β anomers, differing primarily in the orientation of the CH2OH group. In each conformer, the α anomer is predicted to be lower in energy than the corresponding conformers of β anomer. The difference is about 2 kcal/mol in the 4-31G basis but only 0.4 kcal/mol in the 6-31G* basis. It is found that the electronic contributions to the free energy difference stabilize the α anomer while the nuclear motion contributions stabilize the β anomer. The implications of these predictions and the future investigations required to understand the relative stabilities of the two anomers are pointed out. © 1992 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), dispersed fluorescence (DF), mass-resolved one-color resonance enhanced two-photon ionization (RE2PI) and UV-UV hole-burning spectra of 2-aminoindan (2-AI) were measured in a supersonic jet. The hole-burning spectra demonstrated that the congested vibronic structures observed in the LIF excitation spectrum were responsible for three conformers of 2-AI. The origins of the conformers were observed at 36931, 36934, and 36955 cm(-1). The DF spectra obtained by exciting the band origins of the three conformers showed quite similar vibrational structures, with the exception of the bands around 600-900 cm(-1). The molecular structures of the three conformers were assigned with the aid of ab initio calculations at the MP2/6-311+G(d,p) level. An amino hydrogen of the most stable conformer points toward the benzene ring. The stability of the most stable conformer was attributed to an intramolecular N-H...pi hydrogen bonding between the hydrogen atom and the pi-electron of the benzene ring. The other two conformers, devoid of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, were also identified for 2-AI. This suggests weak hydrogen bonding in the most stable conformer. The intramolecular N-H...pi hydrogen bonding in 2-AI was discussed in comparison with other weak hydrogen-bonding systems.  相似文献

Hydrogen bonding between carbazole and pyridine is known to quench fluorescence emission of carbazole. Three carbazolopyridinophanes—compounds composed of carbazole and pyridine subunits such that an intramolecular hydrogen bond may exist between them—have been pursued as reversible fluorescent sensors that detect given analytes through fluorescence restoration. However, these sensors exhibit background fluorescence believed to be related to the proportion of non‐hydrogen‐bonded conformers present. In this computational investigation, the potential energy surfaces of various hydrogen‐bonded carbazole:pyridine complexes are investigated using density functional theory with the intent of explaining the observed background fluorescence for the carbazolopyridinophanes. The results indicate carbazolopyridinophane conformers most resembling the geometry of their corresponding free carbazole:pyridine complexes exhibit the least background fluorescence.  相似文献

This work reports an interaction of 1,4‐dioxane with one, two, and three water molecules using the density functional theory method at B3LYP/6‐311++G* level. Different conformers were studied and the most stable conformer of 1,4‐dioxane‐(water)n (n = 1–3) complex has total energies ?384.1964038, ?460.6570694, and ?537.1032381 hartrees with one, two, and three water molecules, respectively. Corresponding binding energy (BE) for these three most stable structures is 6.23, 16.73, and 18.11 kcal/mol. The hydrogen bonding results in red shift in O? O stretching and C? C stretching modes of 1,4‐dioxane for the most stable conformer of 1,4‐dioxane with one, two, and three water molecules whereas there was a blue shift in C? O symmetric stretching and C? O asymmetric stretching modes of 1,4‐dioxane. The hydrogen bonding results in large red shift in bending mode of water and large blue shift in symmetric stretching and asymmetric stretching mode of water. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aromatic amino acids have large UV absorption cross-sections and low fluorescence quantum yields. Ultrafast internal conversion, which transforms electronic excitation energy to vibrational energy, was assumed to account for the photostability of amino acids. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations suggested that low fluorescence quantum yields of phenol (chromophore of tyrosine) are due to the dissociation from a repulsive excited state. Radicals generated from dissociation may undergo undesired reactions. It contradicts the observed photostability of amino acids. In this work, we explored the photodissociation dynamics of the tyrosine chromophores, 2-, 3- and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid in a molecular beam at 193 nm using multimass ion imaging techniques. We demonstrated that dissociation from the excited state is effectively quenched for the conformers of hydroxybenzoic acids with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Ab initio calculations show that the excited state and the ground state potential energy surfaces change significantly for the conformers with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. It shows the importance of intramolecular hydrogen bond in the excited state dynamics and provides an alternative molecular mechanism for the photostability of aromatic amino acids upon irradiation of ultraviolet photons.  相似文献

Conformation-dependent properties of L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan in neutral and radical cations were studied by using the density functional theory (DFT) with a new density functional M05-2X. The results are compared with those obtained by using the conventional DFT (B3LYP). Results obtained by both types of DFT were in qualitative accord, including the existence of two conformational subgroups and their subgroup-dependent adiabatic ionization energy and hydrogen bonding. On the other hand, quantitative differences were found between the two DFT methods as well: the M05-2X method successfully reproduced experimental adiabatic ionization energy, whereas the B3LYP functional consistently yielded significantly lower values by 0.2-0.3 eV. More importantly, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis for cationic conformers showed that all conformers of L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan undergo charge localization upon ionization regardless of the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, unlike the case of L-phenylalanine that was treated earlier by other studies. Different degrees of charge localization among all three aromatic amino acids are explained by employing a simple model in which the aromatic amino acid is assumed to consist of two submoieties of distinct cationic core: the backbone and aromatic side chain. The difference in adiabatic ionization energy between these two submoieties is found to govern the degree of charge localization.  相似文献

The study of the intermolecular interactions that drive the solvation of six-membered nitrogenated aromatic rings is of particular importance since they are known to constitute key building blocks of pro- teins and nucleotides[1―5]. The investigation of the 1:1 adduct of these molecules with water will be the first step in the understanding of such interactions. These molecules possess two different proton-acceptor sites: the ring π cloud and the lone pairs of electrons on the nitrogen atoms…  相似文献

Solvent effects on the rate of the Claisen rearrangement of chorismate to prephenate have been examined in water and methanol. The preequilibrium free-energy differences between diaxial and diequatorial conformers of chorismate, which had previously been implicated as the sole basis for the observed 100-fold rate increase in water over methanol, have been reframed using the near attack conformation (NAC) concept of Bruice and co-workers. Using a combined QM/MM Monte Carlo/free-energy perturbation (MC/FEP) method, 82%, 57%, and 1% of chorismate conformers were found to be NAC structures (NACs) in water, methanol, and the gas phase, respectively. As a consequence, the conversion of non-NACs to NACs provides no free-energy contributions to the overall relative reaction rates in water versus methanol. Free-energy perturbation calculations yielded differences in free energies of activation for the two polar protic solvents and the gas phase. The rate enhancement in water over the gas phase arises from preferential hydration of the transition state (TS) relative to the reactants via increased hydrogen bonding and long-range electrostatic interactions, which accompany bringing the two negatively charged carboxylates into closer proximity. More specifically, there is an increase of 1.3 and 0.6 hydrogen bonds to the carboxylate groups and the ether oxygen, respectively, in going from the reactant to the TS in water. In methanol, the corresponding changes in hydrogen bonding with first shell solvent molecules are small; the rate enhancement arises primarily from the enhanced long-range interactions with solvent molecules. Thus, the reaction occurs faster in water than in methanol due to greater stabilization of the TS in water by specific interactions with first shell solvent molecules.  相似文献

We report the interaction of acetonitrile with one, two, and three water molecules using the Density Functional Theory method and the 6‐31+G* basis set. Different conformers were studied and the most stable conformer of acetonitrile–(water)n complex has total energies –209.1922504, –285.6224478, and –362.068728 hartrees with one, two, and three water molecules, respectively. The corresponding binding energy for these three structures is 4.52, 8.34, and 22.48 kcal/mol. The hydrogen‐bonding results in blue, blue, and redshift in C?N stretching mode in acetonitrile with one, two, and three water molecules, respectively, whereas there was a redshift in O? Vapor phase OH-stretching overtone spectra of ethylene glycol were recorded to investigate weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The spectra were recorded with conventional absorption spectroscopy and laser photoacoustic spectroscopy in the first to fourth OH-stretching overtone regions. The room-temperature spectra are dominated by two conformers that show weak intramolecular hydrogen bonding. A less abundant third conformer, with no sign of hydrogen bonding, is also observed. Vapor phase spectra of the ethylene-d(4) glycol isotopomer were also recorded and used to identify an interfering resonance between CH-stretching and OH-stretching states in the fourth overtone. Anharmonic oscillator local mode calculations of the OH-stretching transitions have provided an accurate simulation of the observed spectra. The local mode parameters were calculated with coupled cluster ab initio methods. The calculations facilitate assignment of the different conformers in the spectra and illustrate the effect of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

This study focuses on the conformational analysis of ethylene glycol-(water)n (n=1-3) complex by using density functional theory method and the basis set 6-311++G*. Different conformers are reported and the basis set superposition error corrected total energy is -306.767 5171, -383.221 3135, and -459.694 1528 for lowest energy conformer with 1, 2, and 3 water molecules, respectively, with corresponding binding energy -7.75, -15.43, and -36.28 kcal/mol. On applying many-body analysis it has been found that relaxation energy, two-body, three-body energy have significant contribution to the binding energy for ethylene glycol-(water)3 complex whereas four-body energies are negligible. The most stable conformers of ethylene glycol-(water)n complex are the cyclic structures in which water molecules bridge between the two hydroxyl group of ethylene glycol.  相似文献

Crystalline formic acid (FA) is studied experimentally and by first-principles simulations in order to identify a bulk solid structure composed of the higher-energy (cis) conformer. In the experiments, deuterated FA (HCOOD) was deposited in a Ne matrix and transformed to the cis conformer by vibrational excitation of the ground state (trans) form. Evaporation of the Ne host above 13 K prepared FA in a bulk solid state mainly composed of cis-FA. Infrared absorption spectroscopy at 4.3 K shows that the obtained solid differs from that composed of trans-FA molecules and that the state persists up to the annealing temperature of at least 110 K. The first-principles simulations reveal various energetically stable periodic chain structures containing cis-FA conformers. These chain structures contain either purely cis or both cis and trans forms. The vibrational frequencies of the calculated structures were compared to the experiment and a tentative assignment is given for a novel solid composed of cis-FA.  相似文献
