Thermo-elastic aspects of dynamic nucleation

In spite of recent progress in our understanding of the absolute stability of elastic phases under loads, the generic presence of metastable configurations and the possibility of their dynamic breakdown remains a major problem in the mechanical theory of phase transitions in solids. In this paper, by considering the simplest one-dimensional model, we study the interplay between inertial and thermal effects associated with nucleation of a new phase, and address the crucial question concerning the size of a perturbation breaking metastability. We begin by reformulating the nucleation problem as a degenerate Riemann problem. By choosing a specific kinetic relation, originating from thermo-visco-capillary (TVC) regularization, we solve a self-similar problem analytically and demonstrate the existence of two types of solutions: with nucleation and without it. We then show that in the presence of a non-zero latent heat, solution with nucleation may by itself be non-unique. To understand the domain of attraction of different self-similar solutions with and without nucleation, we regularize the model and study numerically the full scale initial value problem with locally perturbed data. Through numerical experiments we present evidence that the TVC regularization is successful in removing deficiencies of the classical thermo-elastic model and is sufficient in specifying the limits of metastability.

A continuum model for initiation and evolution of deformation twinning

Within continuum dislocation theory the plastic deformation of a single crystal with one active slip system under plane-strain constrained shear is investigated. By introducing a twinning shear into the energy of the crystal, we show that in a certain range of straining the formation of deformation twins becomes energetically preferable. An energetic threshold for the onset of twinning is determined. A rough analysis qualitatively describes not only the evolving volume fractions of twins but also their number during straining. Finally, we analyze the evolution of deformation twins and of the dislocation network at non-zero dissipation. We present the corresponding stress-strain hysteresis, the evolution of the plastic distortion, the twin volume fractions and the dislocation densities.

On elastocapillarity: A review

Elastocapillary phenomena involving elastic deformation of solid structures coupled with capillary effects of liquid droplets/films can be observed in a diversity of fields,e.g.,biology and microelectromechanical systems(MEMS).Understanding the physical mechanisms underlying these phenomena is of great interest for the design of new materials and devices by utilizing the effects of surface tension at micro and nano scales.In this paper,some recent developments in the investigations on elastocapillary phenomena are briefly reviewed.Especially,we consider the deformation,adhesion,self-assembly,buckling and wrinkling of materials and devices induced by surface tensions or capillary forces.The main attention is paid to the experimental results of these phenomena and the theoretical analysis methods based on continuum mechanics.Additionally,the applications of these studies in the fields of MEMS,micro/nanometrology,and biomimetic design of advanced materials and devices are discussed.     

A component framework for the parallel solution of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with Radau‐IIA methods

An efficient solution strategy for the simulation of incompressible fluids needs adequate and accurate space and time discretization schemes. In this paper, for the space discretization, we use an inf–sup stable finite element method and for the time discretization, Radau‐IIA methods of higher order, which have the advantage that the pressure component has convergence order s in time, where s is the number of internal stages. The disadvantage of this approach is that we have a high computational amount of work, because large nonlinear systems of equations have to solved. In this paper, we use a transformation of the coefficient matrix and the simplified Newton method. This approach has the effect that our large nonlinear systems split into smaller ones, which can now also be solved in parallel. For the parallelization of the code we use the software component technology and the Component Template Library. Numerical examples show that high order in the pressure component can be achieved and that the proposed solution technique is very effective. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
