Poly(ε‐caprolactone) films (TONE® 787) were irradiated by electron beam in air prior to grafting in aqueous solutions of acrylamide. The grafting kinetics and molecular weight of the grafted poly(acrylamide) chains were studied with irradiation doses between 2.5 and 20 Mrad and in the Mohr's salt concentration range of 0.0025–1 wt %. The grafting rate and yield were strongly dependent on the Mohr's salt concentration. By molecular weight analysis of grafted poly(acrylamide) chains, it was shown that the molecular weight is approximately proportional to the mass of the grafted PAAm. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Radiation-induced graft polymerization of acrylamide (AAm) onto low-density polyethylene(LDPE) film has been investigated. The appropriate reaction conditions at which the graft polymerization was carried out successfully were selected. It was observed that the grafting process was enhanced remarkably by using distilled water as diluent. In this grafting system ammonium ferrous sulphate (Mohr's salt) was used as inhibitor to minimize the homopolymerization of AAm and the suitable concentration of such inhibitor was found to be 3 wt %. The dependence of the grafting rate on the monomer concentration was calculated to be 2.9 order, regardless of the irradiation atmosphere (N2 gas or under vacuum). When the radiation grafting process was carried out under vacuum, higher degrees of grafting were obtained as compared to those in nitrogen gas or in air atmosphere. Network structure was formed in the graft copolymer and the gel formation was determined in the p-xylene-extracted grafted films. Results showed good evidence that the grafting process takes place by the front mechanism.  相似文献

A study has been made for the preparation of membranes by the post radiation grafting of acrylamide (AAm) onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), films. The appropriate reaction conditions were selected under which the graft polymerization was carried out successfully. In this grafting system ammonium ferrous sulphate (Mohr's salt) was used as inhibitor to minimize the homopolymerization of AAm and a suitable concentration of the inhibitor to be added to the reaction medium was found to be 0.05 wt%. The effect of monomer concentration, radiation intensity and temperature on the rate and final degree of grafting was investigated. Increasing grafting temperature rises the initial grafting rate, whereas the final grafting yield increases with temperature up to 45°C, and then declines. This behaviour was described by the influence of glass transition on the rate of termination in the semicrystalline polymer. The overall activation energy for this grafting system was found to be 14.6 and 44.5 kcal/mol above and below 35°C, respectively. Some selected properties of the graft copolymer were studied. It was found that the grafted membranes possess good mechanical and electrical properties and excellent chemical and thermal stability which makes them very promising in practical applications.  相似文献

Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) film was irradiated by electron beam in air or argon prior to grafting in aqueous solutions of acrylamide containing 0.05% of Mohr's salt. The grafting kinetics was studied with pre-irradiation doses in the range of 2.5–25 Mrad and in the temperature range of 40–70°C. Grafting rates and final degrees of grafting were higher for LLDPE pre-irradiated in air than for LLDPE pre-irradiated in argon. The overall activation energies for the grafting reaction were dose-dependent. Above 5 Mrad, the overall activation energies were higher for LLDPE pre-irradiated in argon which is interpreted as being due to crosslinking of the LLDPE. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Controlled (low degree) grafting of a polar group to a non‐polar polymer or reverse is an important means to change the polarity of the base polymer, maintaining the properties of the polymer. In the present study, a polar monomer, methacrylic acid (MAA), was grafted onto three different types of “Engages” (a special type of polyolefin elastomer) in aqueous medium by gamma radiation. Grafting parameters (total dose, MAA concentration, and Mohr's salt concentration) were optimized for the desired amount of low‐degree grafting (less than 15 wt%). The grafting yields were measured gravimetrically. Pure and grafted Engages were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, and scanning electron microscope. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy spectra confirmed the successful grafting of MAA onto the Engages. For all three, the best yields were found at 3‐kGy gamma radiation dose, 25‐vol% MAA, and 20‐mM Mohr's salt concentration. The grafting efficiencies follow a descending trend like Engage 8150 > Engage 7447 > Engage 8003. From contact angle measurement, it was seen that the hydrophilicities of all Engage surfaces were increased after grafting. Scanning electron microscope illustrated the best distribution of grafted MAA molecules to be on Engage 8150 surface followed by Engage 7447 and Engage 8003, respectively. The tensile testing results suggested that the mechanical properties of the base polymers remained almost unchanged after grafting. Thus, without detrimenting any basic properties, polyolefin elastomers can be grafted to achieve desired yield by an environmental‐friendly method, gamma radiation grafting, in aqueous media. Gamma radiation induced grafting of acrylamide (AAm) onto vulcanized strips of EPDM and EPDM/PE blends has been carried out. The effects of different parameters on the graft yield have been investigated. These parameters include: radiation dose, monomer concentration, diluent composition and types of inhibitors. It has been found that water is the most appropriate solvent. The preswelling of crosslinked rubber samples in cyclohexane prior to grafting enhances the grafting and the addition of methanol to water as binary diluent in the ratio (1 : 1) decreases the graft yield. The presence of Mohr's salt and copper sulfate in the reaction mixture in the molar ratio (2.1 : 0.5) markedly increases the graft yield. Evidence of grafting have been conducted using thermal analysis as well as swelling measurements in water. Also, it has been found that the mechanical properties of the blends decrease at graft yield 13%. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new and convenient method for the synthesis of biscoumarins based on the condensation of 4‐hydroxycoumarin and aromatic aldehydes in the presence of Mohr's salt hexahydrate (ferrous ammonium sulfate hexahydrate) as a novel catalyst on water is developed. This method has advantages such as the use of inexpensive and available reagent, avoidance of organic solvents, short reaction times, and high product yields.  相似文献

The use of hexavalent chromium to initiate graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wool fibers has been investigated. The rate of grafting was determined by varying monomer, chromium(VI), temperature, acidity of the medium, nature of wool, reaction medium, and redox system. The graft yield increases with increasing monomer concentration up to 0.65M, and, with further increase of monomer the graft yield decreases. The graft yield increases with increasing chromium(VI) concentration. The grafting is considerably influenced by chemical modification of wool prior to grafting. The effect of certain inorganic salt and anionic surfactant on the rate of grafting has been investigated. The graft yield is influenced by thiourea concentration; it decreases with increasing thiourea concentration.  相似文献

Various aromatic, aliphatic and conjugated aldehydes were transformed to the corresponding carboxylic acids with 70% t‐BuOOH solution (water) in the presence of catalytic amounts (10 mol%) of Mohr's salt. This method possesses functional group compatibility, does not involve cumbersome work‐up, exhibits chemoselectivity since other functional groups remain intact and proceeds under mild conditions. The resulting products are obtained in good yields within reasonable times. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Direct radiation-induced grafting of aqueous acrylic acid (AAc) onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene) (ET) film has been studied. The effect of grafting conditions such as monomer concentration, exposure dose, dose rate, and film thickness on the grafting yield was investigated. The dependence of the grafting rate on monomer concentration was found to be 1.2 order. The dependence of the grafting rate on dose rate was found to be 0.6 order regardless of the film thickness. The relationship between the grafting rate and film thickness gave a negative first-order dependence. The results suggest that the grafting process is mainly controlled by monomer diffusion, and it was concluded that this grafting system proceeded by the front mechanism. The swelling behavior increases linearly with degree of grafting. The electrical conductivity and mechanical properties for the trunk and grafted polymer were investigated at different irradiation doses in air and under vacuum irradiations. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The use of tetravalent cerium to initiate graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate on to silk fibres has been investigated. The extent of grafting was determined while varying Ce(IV) and monomer concentrations, temperature and nature of the fibre. The graft yield increased on increasing Ce(IV) concentration up to 0.015 M and monomer concentration up to 0.469 M; thereafter it decreased. The effect of an inorganic salt (copper sulphate) on grafting has also been studied. Chemical modification of the silk prior to grafting noticeably affected graft yield.  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto nonmulberry natural tussah silk fibers was investigated in aqueous solution using tetravalent cerium as initiator. The rate of grafting was determined by varying the monomer concentration, the cerium (IV) concentration, the temperature, and the nature of the silk. With increasing monomer concentration the graft yield increased (up to 0.657 M) and thereafter decreased. The graft yield also increased with increasing cerium (IV) concentration. The graft-on was influenced by chemical modification of the tussah silk prior to grafting. The effect of certain inorganic salts on the rate of grafting was investigated.  相似文献

The chemical grafting of thiol terminated poly(sodium styrenesulfonate)(HS-PSSS) chains from sodium nitrate (NaNO_3) salt solution to a gold surface was investigated with a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) in different salt concentrations. It was found that at low salt concentration grafting density of HS-PSSS was low and the grafted chains adopted a mushroom conformation. With the increase of salt concentration polyelectrolyte chains underwent a transition toward coiled stat...  相似文献

The radiation graft polymerization of styrene to polyethylene was studied under diffusion-controlled conditions of radiation intensity I, monomer concentration M1, and polymer sample thickness L. The results of the present study together with previous work under diffusion-free conditions verify our theoretical model for the diffusion-controlled reaction. The grafting rate is inverse first order in L for diffusion-controlled reaction and independent of L for diffusion-free reaction. The order of dependence of grafting rate on radiation intensity for diffusion-controlled reaction is one-half that for diffusion-free reaction. Diffusion control leads to a decrease in the order of dependence of grafting rate on monomer concentration. The decrease is greater than theoretically predicted; possible reasons for this effect are described.  相似文献

The mechanism of thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied by pyrolysis up to 400°C in a thermobalance under four kinds of dynamic atmospheres: helium, oxygen, air, and hydrogen chloride. The gaseous product from the thermobalance was analyzed for hydrogen chloride by the argentometric determination of chloride ions by using Mohr's method. An attempt was made to analyze for other gases in the product stream by chromatography with the use of a glass column, but failed due to the accumulation irreversibly of hydrogen chloride on the column. The molecular weights of the samples were determined by measurements of viscosities at 25°C in cyclohexanone; their molecular weight distributions were studied by fractionation and gelpermeation chromatography (GPC). From the thermograms, the mechanism of degradation in different heating atmospheres, the rate, the heat effect, the energy of activation, and the order of decomposition were deduced.  相似文献

Gamma radiation-induced grafting of styrene into FEP films was investigated by the pre-irradiation method. The degree of grafting was found to be strongly dependent on the synthesis conditions, such as radiation dose, monomer concentration, crosslinker, temperature, and film thickness. The order of dependence of the rate of grafting on pre-irradiation dose and monomer concentration was found to be 0.64 and 1.90, respectively. The activation energy for the grafting in the temperature range of 50–80°C was determined to be 27.9 kJ/mol. A negative first order dependence of grafting on film thickness was observed. The results suggest that the initial grafting takes place at the film surface and proceeds to the middle by progressive diffusion of monomer through the polystyrene grafted layers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto wool was investigated in aqueous solution using the potassium peroxy-diphosphate-thiourea redox system as the initiator. The rate of grafting was determined by varying the monomer, peroxydi-phosphate ion, temperature, and solvent. The graft yield increases with increasing peroxydiphosphate ion up to 80 × 10?-4 mol/L, and with further increase of peroxydiphosphate ion the graft yield decreases. The graft yield increases with increasing monomer concentration. The percentage of grafting decreases with increasing thiourea concentration. The rate of grafting increases with an increase of temperature. The effect of acid and water-soluble solvent and certain salts on graft yield has been investigated and a suitable rate expression has been derived.  相似文献

Langevin dynamics simulations were conducted to study the collapse of grafted partially charged 4-arm star chains onto the oppositely charged grafting electrode in the presence of trivalent salt coions. Simulation results reveal that the average charge fraction of the grafted star chains and the salt concentration play critical roles in the competitive adsorption of charged monomers and trivalent salt coions onto the oppositely charged electrode. For grafted star chains with relatively high charge fraction, charged monomers are the dominant species collapsing on the oppositely charged electrode with the emergence of charge reversal on the grafting electrode. At a low charge fraction such that the total amount of charges on a grafted star molecule is comparable to that of a trivalent salt coion, trivalent salt coions absorb more strongly onto the electrode than grafted stars even at very low salt concentration. It is found that at relatively low charge fraction of star chains, the addition of trivalent salt coions does not lead to charge overcompensation of the surface charges on the grafting electrode. The stretching of star brushes under an electric field in the presence of trivalent salt coions was also briefly investigated.  相似文献

Liquid phase and vapour phase grafting of acrylic acid on to nylon-6 were performed by the mutual irradiation technique. Liquid phase direct irradiation grafting was carried out in air either in the presence or in the absence of redox salt. The redox salt led to a sharp increase in the grafting yield and prevented excessive homopolymerization of acrylic acid. The effects of total dose, solvent type and composition, and monomer concentration on the direct grafting in the liquid and vapour phases were studied The data indicate that, if conditions were kept fixed, the vapour phase technique gives rise to lower grafting yields than the liquid phase method.  相似文献

Grafting of acrylonitrile onto starch showed slightly higher yields when using soluble rather than insoluble starch, for reaction times < 1.5 hr. Beyond this time, the rate of grafting onto the soluble starch levels off, while that for grafting onto the insoluble starch proceeds leading to prograssive increase in the grafting yield. Momomer reactivity was in the following order: acrylonitrile > ethyl acrylate? methyl methacrylate. For the first two monomers, the order of reactivity is the reverse of that found for grafting onto cellulose; extremely low grafting yields resulted from grafting of ethyl acrylate rather than acrylonitrile onto starch. This result was attributed to the jelly nature of the polyethyl acrylate grafted starch, preventing diffusion of the monomer into the starch granules. This view was supported by the higher consumption of ceric ions at the start of the reaction, on grafting ethyl acrylate instead of acrylonitrile. As the reaction proceeds, the reverse takes place. Increase of ceric salt concentration, as well as the liquor to starch ratio, led to increased grafting yields.  相似文献
