The prediction of the response of unsteady flows submitted to external excitation is a real challenge for the optimization of industrial processes. As the jet flow is a very basic turbulent flow related to mixing and entrainment phenomena via turbulent structure dynamic, we investigate the transient behavior of an axisymmetric jet submitted to a large and sudden decrease of its ejection velocity. The non stationary flow evolution is studied experimentally. Measurements along the jet axis based on pure ensemble averaging show clearly the convective motion of the perturbation and the adaptation of the local interaction to the local jet time scale. A transverse investigation in the non stationary region show that the mean flow and its turbulence is deeply affected during the local velocity decrease.  相似文献

The present study describes the application of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to investigate the compressible flow in the wake of a two-dimensional blunt base at a freestream Mach number MX=2. The first part of the study addresses specific issues related to the application of PIV to supersonic wind tunnel flows, such as the seeding particle flow-tracing fidelity and the measurement spatial resolution. The seeding particle response is assessed through a planar oblique shock wave experiment. The measurement spatial resolution is enhanced by means of an advanced image-interrogation algorithm. In the second part, the experimental results are presented. The PIV measurements yield the spatial distribution of mean velocity and turbulence. The mean velocity distribution clearly reveals the main flow features such as expansion fans, separated shear layers, flow recirculation, reattachment, recompression and wake development. The turbulence distribution shows the growth of turbulent fluctuations in the separated shear layers up to the reattachment location. Increased velocity fluctuations are also present downstream of reattachment outside of the wake due to unsteady flow reattachment and recompression. The instantaneous velocity field is analyzed seeking coherent flow structures in the redeveloping wake. The instantaneous planar velocity and vorticity measurements return evidence of large-scale turbulent structures detected as spatially coherent vorticity fluctuations. The velocity pattern consistently shows large masses of fluid in vortical motion. The overall instantaneous wake flow is organized as a double row of counter-rotating structures. The single structures show vorticity contours of roughly elliptical shape in agreement with previous studies based on spatial correlation of planar light scattering. Peak vorticity is found to be five times higher than the mean vorticity value, suggesting that wake turbulence is dominated by the activity of large-scale structures. The unsteady behavior of the reattachment phenomenon is studied. Based on the instantaneous flow topology, the reattachment is observed to fluctuate mostly in the streamwise direction suggesting that the unsteady separation is dominated by a pumping-like motion.  相似文献

This paper addresses the ability to reliably measure the fluctuating velocity field in variable-viscosity flows (herein, a propane–air mixture), using hot-wire anemometry. Because the latter is sensitive to both velocity and concentration fluctuations, the instantaneous concentration field also needs to be inferred experimentally. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the hot-wire response becomes insensitive to the concentration of the field, when a small amount of neon is added to the air. In this way, velocity measurements can be made independently of the concentration field. Although not necessary to velocity measurements, Rayleigh light-scattering technique is also used to infer the local (fluctuating) concentration, and, therefore, the viscosity of the fluid. Velocity and concentration measurements are performed in a turbulent propane jet discharging into an air–neon co-flow, for which the density and viscosity ratios are 1.52 and 1/5.5, respectively. The Reynolds number (based on injection diameter and velocity) is 15400. These measurements are first validated: the axial decay of the mean velocity and concentration, as well as the lateral mean and RMS profiles of velocity and concentration, is in full agreement with the existing literature. The variable-viscosity flow along the axis of the round jet is then characterized and compared with a turbulent air jet discharging into still air, for which the Reynolds number (based on injection diameter and velocity) is 5400. Both flows have the same initial jet momentum. As mixing with the viscous co-flow is enhanced with increasing downstream position, the viscosity of the fluid increases rapidly for the case of the propane jet. In comparison with the air jet, the propane jet exhibits: (1) a lower local Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale (by a factor of four); (2) a reduced range of scales present in the flow; (3) the isotropic form of the mean energy dissipation rate is first more enhanced and then drastically diminishes and (4) a progressively increasing local Schmidt number (from 1.36 to 7.5) for increasing downstream positions. Therefore, the scalar spectra exhibit an increasingly prominent Batchelor regime with a ~ k ?1 scaling law. The experimental technique developed herein provides a reliable method for the study of variable-viscosity flows.  相似文献

The flow field of a radial wall jet created by the impingement of a round synthetic jet normal to a flat surface was characterized using hot-wire anemometry. In the synthetic wall jets the width of the outer layer was observed to increase linearly with the radial distance along the wall, while the local maximum velocity varied inversely. The synthetic wall jet exhibits self-similar behavior as distinguished by the collapse of the mean and rms velocity profiles when normalized by the outer layer scaling variables. Increasing the actuator driving amplitude at a fixed frequency (i) increased the growth rate of the outer layer, and (ii) decreased the decay rate of the local velocity maximum. The flow field of the synthetic wall jet was dominated by vortical structures associated with the actuator driving frequency, and harmonics connected with the interaction of the produced vortex structures. For the actuator conditions investigated, neither the classical laminar nor fully turbulent analytical solutions for continuous wall jets were amenable to modeling the synthetic wall jet profile due to the transitional and unsteady nature of the synthetic wall jet.  相似文献

In many cases, turbulence is superimposed on an unsteady organized motion of a mean flow. In the past, these turbulent flows have been studied by time or ensemble averaging methods and some decomposition techniques such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In this study, a new decomposition technique called the turbulence filter will be used to decompose the forced turbulent jet flows. By using the turbulence filtering technique, the fluctuating (turbulent) part and the more organized (forced) part of the velocity field are analyzed. Within this context several experiments on organized turbulent jet flow have been carried out. In the experiments, variable frequency and amplitude oscillation are imposed on a 1D jet. An elliptical plate was used in order to obtain sinusoidal forcing. The axial distance, Reynolds number and the forcing frequency of the signal were varied. The multiple hot wires (six probes) were used to investigate the evolution of the signal along the radial distance. The obtained results of the turbulence filter are compared with those of phase-averaging and POD techniques. The eigenmodes of the data are also evaluated by using the POD method. Turbulent structure during transition to self-similarity in a round jet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The developing turbulent region of a round jet was investigated using an improved implementation of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The two-dimensional flow field in planes normal and parallel to the axial velocity was measured at locations between 15 and 30 diameters downstream, for two Reynolds numbers of 5500 and 16,000. The study consisted of instantaneous snapshots of the velocity and vorticity fields as well as measurements of velocity correlations up to third order. In this regime, the Reynolds number had a significant effect on both the instantaneous flow structure and the profiles of mean velocity across the jet. Coherent streamwise structures were present in the jet core for the lower Reynolds number. Additional structures whose evolution was governed by time scales two orders of magnitude larger than the convective scale inside the jet were observed in the entrainment field. The velocity correlations provided further support for the validity of DPIV turbulence measurements. The data was consistent with the equations of motion and momentum was conserved. DPIV measurements of turbulent kinetic energy components agreed with the hot-wire measurements of previous studies. Received: 27 November 1996/Accepted: 14 July 1997  相似文献

In order to understand the dynamics of vortices on heat transfer, the unsteady flow field of tangential direction jets flowing in the annular chamber is numerically investigated by scale-adaptive simulation (SAS). The jet Reynolds number is 332,000 based on the jet’s diameter and inflow velocity for a specific geometric model. The analogy theory is used to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient distribution on the hub surface. Spectral analysis via fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to analyze frequency information that flows inside the chamber. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is performed on the velocity field in the chamber and the convective heat transfer coefficient on the hub surface using a snapshot method. The fast Fourier transform helps find the dominant frequency of the unsteady flow in the chamber. The time sequence of velocity fields on the radial plane shows the presence of cyclic flapping of the jet. The proper orthogonal decomposition analysis indicates that the unsteady periodic flow phenomenon in the chamber and unsteady heat transfer on the hub surface are mainly related to the dynamics of the counter-rotating vortices caused by the jet.  相似文献

In the current study, model expressions for fifth-order velocity moments obtained from the truncated Gram-Charlier series expansions model for a turbulent flow field probability density function are validated using data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a planar turbulent flow in a strained channel. Simplicity of the model expressions, the lack of unknown coefficients, and their applicability to non-Gaussian turbulent flows make this approach attractive to use for closing turbulent models based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The study confirms validity of the model expressions. It also shows that the imposed flow deformation improves an agreement between the model and DNS profiles for the fifth-order moments in the flow buffer zone including when the flow reverses its direction. The study reveals sensitivity of particularly odd velocity moments to the grid resolution. A new length scale is proposed as a criterion for the grid generation near the wall and in the other flow areas dominated by high mean velocity gradients when higher-order statistics have to be collected from DNS.  相似文献

Dilute, dispersed two-phase flows arise in many contexts ranging from solid particles or droplets in gas flows to bubbles in liquids. Many of the flows of interest are turbulent, which presents a complex problem to analyze or to determine the dominant physical processes contributing to the observed phenomena. Advances in experimental techniques have made it possible to measure directly turbulent and particle velocity fluctuations in dilute systems. This has provided a counterpart to advances in computational and analytical models and a basis on which to test these models. Three specific areas are considered: the fluctuating forces on an individual particle in an unsteady flow, the response of a solid particle to a turbulent air flow, and the corresponding response of a small bubble in turbulent liquid flows. Results from direct numerical simulations are presented for each of these, including the nonuniform distribution of particles generated by local instantaneous features of the flow. The issue of turbulence modulation at low to moderate void fractions is discussed.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is presented of a turbulent jet issuing from a round sharp-edged orifice plate (OP) into effectively unbounded surroundings. Planar measurements of velocity were conducted using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in the near and transition regions. The Reynolds number, based on the jet initial diameter and velocity, is approximately 72,000. The instantaneous and mean velocities, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were obtained. The centerline velocity decay and the half-velocity radius were derived from the mean velocity. It is revealed that primary coherent structures occur in the near field of the OP jet and that they are typically distributed asymmetrically with respect to the nozzle axis. Comparison of the present PIV and previous hot-wire measurements for the OP jet suggests that high initial turbulence intensity leads to reduced rates of decay and spread of the mean flow field and moreover a lower rate of variation of the turbulence intensity. Results also show that self-similarity of the mean flow is well established from the transition region while the turbulent statistics are far from self-similar within the measured range to 16 diameters.  相似文献

The principles of stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV), including distortion compensation, were applied to the turbulent flow in a vessel stirred by a Rushton turbine. An angular offset configuration was used and tilt-axis lens mounts were incorporated in order to satisfy the Scheimpflug condition, significantly reducing the ordinarily large depth of field requirements of such configurations. A distortion compensation procedure, or in situ calibration, was utilized in place of the ray tracing, or mechanical registration, used in previous studies. The calibration procedure was validated using two tests, one a rigid translation of a speckle target, the other the viscous flow between two concentric cylinders. The results of the tests suggest the success with which the distortion compensation procedure may be applied to real fluid flows. Phase-locked instantaneous data were ensemble averaged and interpolated in order to obtain mean 3-D velocity fields on a cylindrical shell enclosing the turbine blade. From these fields, the tip vortex pairs and the radial jet documented in previous studies of mixer flows were easily identified. Received: 5 February 1999/Accepted: 1 December 1999  相似文献

The behavior of compressible jets originated from initially turbulent pipe flows issuing in still air has been investigated at three different subsonic Mach numbers, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9. Helium, nitrogen and krypton gases were used to generate the jet flows and investigate the additional effects of density on the flow structure. Particle image velocimetry, high-frequency response pressure transducers and thermocouples were used to obtain velocity, Mach number and total temperature measurements inside the flow field. The jets were formed at the exit of an adiabatic compressible frictional turbulent pipe flow, which was developing toward its corresponding sonic conditions inside the pipe, and continued to expand within the first four diameters distance after it exited the pipe. Theoretical considerations based on flow self-similarity were used to obtain the decay of Mach number along the centerline of the jets for the first time. It was found that this decay depends on two contributions, one from the velocity field which is inversely proportional to the distance from the exit and one from the thermal field which is proportional to this distance. As a result, a small non-linearity in the variation of the inverse Mach number with downstream distance was found. The decay of the Mach number at the centerline of the axisymmetric jets increases by increasing the initial Mach number at the exit of the flow for all jets. The decay of mean velocity at the centerline of the jets is also higher at higher exit Mach numbers. However, the velocity non-dimensionalized by the exit velocity seems to decrease faster at low exit Mach numbers, suggesting a reduced mixing with increasing exit flow Mach numbers. Helium jets were found to have the largest spreading rate among the three different gas jets used in the present investigation, while krypton jets had the lowest spreading rate. The spreading rate of each gas decreases with increasing its kinetic energy relatively to its internal energy.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with adopting of a Talbot effect-based technique for analyzing flows with random phase inhomogeneities. It is shown that this method is a powerful tool for diagnostics of turbulent flows. The potential of the technique is illustrated by measuring mean and fluctuating values of admixture concentration of two-dimensional turbulent helium jet issuing into the ambient air. Averaged air and helium concentrations throughout the flow field are determined using local light refraction measurements with a high spatial resolution from a long-exposed Talbot image of the jet. The analysis of light intensity distributions in light spots of a Talbot-image shows that the jet turbulence is inhomogeneous and anisotropic. Quantitative information on rms fluctuations of concentration gradients throughout the flow field is obtained from local photometric measurements at the Talbot light spots.  相似文献

Measurements of mean velocity components, turbulent intensity, and Reynolds shear stress are presented in a turbulent lifted H2/N2 jet flame as well as non-reacting air jet issuing into a vitiated co-flow by laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique. The objectives of this paper are to obtain a velocity data base missing in the previous experiment data of the Dibble burner and so provide initial and flow field data for evaluating the validity of various numerical codes describing the turbulent partially premixed flames on this burner. It is found that the potential core is shortened due to the high ratio of jet density to co-flow density in the non-reacting cases. However, the existence of flame suppressed turbulence in the upstream region of the jet dominates the length of potential core in the reacting cases. At the centreline, the normalized axial velocities in the reacting cases are higher than the non-reacting cases, and the relative turbulent intensities of the reacting flow are smaller than in the non-reacting flow, where a self-preserving behaviour for the relative turbulent intensities exists at the downstream region. The profiles of mean axial velocity in the lifted flame distribute between the non-reacting jet and non-premixed flame both in the axial and radial distributions. The radial distributions of turbulent kinetic energy in the lifted flames exhibit a change in distributions indicating the difference of stabilisation mechanisms of the two lifted flame. The experimental results presented will guide the development of an improved modelling for such flames.  相似文献

Effect of initial conditions on a circular jet   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Two circular jets are considered. One issues from a contraction with a laminar top-hat velocity profile. The other exits from a pipe with a fully developed turbulent mean velocity profile. In spite of the significantly different initial conditions, spectra of axial and radial velocity fluctuations in the far field (x≳30d, where d is the jet diameter) collapse over scales ranging from the Kolmogorov length scale to a length scale characterizing the organized motion. This agreement is consistent with the observation that, at the measurement station, the large-scale anisotropy is unchanged between the two flows. This paper investigates the layered structure of a turbulent plane wall jet at a distance from the nozzle exit. Based on the force balances in the mean momentum equation, the turbulent plane wall jet is divided into three regions: a boundary layer-like region (BLR) adjacent to the wall, a half free jet-like region (HJR) away from the wall, and a plug flow-like region (PFR) in between. In the PFR, the mean streamwise velocity is essentially the maximum velocity, and the simplified mean continuity and mean momentum equations result in a linear variation of the mean wall-normal velocity and Reynolds shear stress. In the HJR, as in a turbulent free jet, a proper scale for the mean wall-normal flow is the mean wall-normal velocity far from the wall and a proper scale for the Reynolds shear stress is the product of the maximum mean streamwise velocity and the velocity scale for the mean wall-normal flow. The BLR region can be divided into four sub-layers, similar to those in a canonical pressure-driven turbulent channel flow or shear-driven turbulent boundary layer flow. Building on the log-law for the mean streamwise velocity in the BLR, a new skin friction law is proposed for a turbulent wall jet. The new prediction agrees well with the correlation of Bradshaw and Gee (1960) over moderate Reynolds numbers, but gives larger skin frictions at higher Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Simultaneous DPTV/PLIF measurements of a turbulent jet   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Simultaneous measurements of instantaneous velocity and concentration fields were performed using digital particle tracking velocimetry and planar laser- induced fluorescence for a turbulent jet at a Reynolds number of 3000. The measurements of mean velocity, turbulent stresses, mean concentration, concentration variance, and turbulent flux of tracer all collapse onto self-similar profiles in the far field of the jet. The measurements showed excellent agreement with previous point velocity and concentration measurements. It is concluded that the system is an effective means of measuring the velocity and concentration distributions and turbulent characteristics.
