The derivation of an expression of the macroscopic stress tensor in terms of microscopic variables in systems of finite interacting particles is discussed from different points of view. It is shown that in volume averaging the introduction of a fictitious “interaction stress field”T I with special boundary conditions on the boundary of the averaging volume is needed. In ensemble averaging similar results are obtained by using a multipole expansion of the local stress and force fields. In the appropriate limiting cases, the obtained results are shown to be consistent with the results of kinetic theories of polymer solutions. The stress relaxation behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE) can be affected by ageing processes; e.g., with increasing storage time at a low temperature following a quench from a high temperature (close to the melting point) the relaxation curves change shape. More specifically, the stress level approached after very long loading times in a stress relaxation experiment increases with the ageing time. Here this stress level is denoted the internal stress i. Struik has pointed out that physical ageing may also occur in semicrystalline polymers like HDPE. The physical ageing should then be associated with that part of the amorphous phase which is closest to the surfaces of the crystallites. This part of the amorphous phase of HDPE can be assumed to have a restricted mobility at room temperature and may have a partially glassy character. In this paper a model for explaining the increase in i for HDPE with increasing ageing time is proposed and discussed. It is based on the separation of the amorphous phase into two parts as suggested by Struik. The glassy part of the amorphous phase ages in a way similar to that of an entirely amorphous polymer quenched to a temperature below its glass transition, while the more rubbery phase is assumed not to undergo any physical ageing.  相似文献

Predictions are made for the elongational-flow transient rheological properties of the dilute-solution internal viscosity (IV) model developed earlier by Bazua and Williams. Specifically, the elongational viscosity growth function e + (t) is presented for abrupt changes in the elongational strain rate . For calculating e +, a novel treatment of the initial rotation of chain submolecules is required; such rotation occurs in response to the macroscopic step change of at t = 0. Representative are results presented for N = 100 (N = number of submolecules) and = 1000 f and 10000 f (where is the IV coefficient and f is the bead friction coefficient), using h * = 0 (as in the original Rouse model) for the hydrodynamic interaction. The major role of IV is to cause the following changes relative to the Rouse model: 1) abrupt stress jump at t = 0 for e +; 2) general time-retardance of response. There is no qualitative change from the Rouse-model prediction of unbounded il growth when exceeds a critical value ( ), and calculations of submolecule strains at various show that the unbounded- e behavior arises from unlimited submolecule strains when . However, the time-retardance could delay such growth beyond the timescale of most experiments and spinning processes, so that the instability might not be detected. Finally, e + (t) and e ( ) in the limit are presented for N = 1 and compared with exact predictions for the analogous rigid-rod molecule; close agreement lends support for the new physical approximation introduced for solving the transient dynamics for any N.  相似文献

Results are reported for the dynamic moduli,G andG, measured mechanically, and the dynamic third normal stress difference, measured optically, of a series bidisperse linear polymer melts under oscillatory shear. Nearly monodisperse hydrogenated polyisoprenes of molecular weights 53000 and 370000 were used to prepare blends with a volume fraction of long polymer, L, of 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.50, and 0.75. The results demonstrate the applicability of birefringence measurements to solve the longstanding problem of measuring the third normal stress difference in oscillatory flow. The relationship between the third normal stress difference and the shear stress observed for these entangled polymer melts is in agreement with a widely predicted constitutive relationship: the relationship between the first normal stress difference and the shear stress is that of a simple fluid, and the second normal stress difference is proportional to the first. These results demonstrate the potential use of 1,3-birefringence to measure the third normal stress difference in oscillatory flow. Further, the general constitutive equation supported by the present results may be used to determine the dynamic moduli from the measured third normal stress difference in small amplitude oscillatory shear. Directions for future research, including the use of birefringence measurements to determineN 2/N 1 in oscillatory shear, are described.  相似文献

For many solid materials the stress relaxation process obeys the universal relationF = – (d/d lnt)max = (0.1 ± 0.01) ( 0 i ), regardless of the structure of the material. Here denotes the stress,t the time, 0 the initial stress of the experiment and i the internal stress. A cooperative model accounting for the similarity in relaxation behaviour between different materials was developed earlier. Since this model has a spectral character, the concepts of linear viscoelasticity are used here to evaluate the corresponding prediction of the dynamic mechanical properties, i.e. the frequency dependence of the storageE () and lossE () moduli. Useful numerical approximations ofE () andE () are also evaluated. It is noted that the universal relation in stress relaxation had a counterpart in the frequency dependence ofE (). The theoretical prediction of the loss factor for high-density polyethylene is compared with experimental results. The agreement is good.  相似文献

A slit viscometer has been constructed to measure the viscosity of aqueous systems at temperatures up to 140 °C. Liquid is forced backwards and forwards through the slit by the use of varying air pressure. The flow rate is obtained from the time for the liquid to pass conductivity probes located in liquid reservoirs either side of the slit. The pressure difference between two points on the slit wall is determined using a differential pressure transducer. By varying the slit height measurements can be made on liquids with viscosities in the range 10 to 10–3 Pa s. Shear rates from 10 to 104 s–1 can be achieved. A simple microcomputer control system enables the shear stress to be automatically increased and decreased stepwise. Representative data on polysaccharide solutions and strach suspensions are presented. The viscometer is particularly well-suited for following temperature-dependent biopolymer transitions and the thermal depolymerisation of water soluble polymers.  相似文献

A simplethermoelastic method is proposed, and justified, for predicting stresses arising during cooling of a linearviscoelastic solid. It is equivalent to representing the material by an array of spring-switch thermoelastic elements. The final stress resulting from an increment of strain is calculated using isochronal modulus data applying to the temperature at which the strain was applied, modified to accommodate temperature dependence of the limiting moduli. The method is exact for a material whose relaxation times and limiting moduli scale uniformly with change in temperature, with time-temperature shift factora T obeying the Arrhenius equation, cooled such that reciprocal absolute temperature is linear in time. For other cooling sequences it is useful as an approximation. In particular, it assists the computational prediction of stresses arising during cooling in polymer processes.  相似文献

Superposition of oscillatory shear imposed from the boundary and through pressure gradient oscillations and simple shear is investigated. The integral fluid with fading memory shows flow enhancement effects due to the nonlinear structure. Closed-form expressions for the change in the mass transport rate are given at the lowest significant order in the perturbation algorithm. The elasticity of the liquid plays as important a role in determining the enhancement as does the shear dependent viscosity. Coupling of shear thinning and elasticity may produce sharp increases in the flow rate. The interaction of oscillatory shear components may generate a steady flow, either longitudinal or orthogonal, resulting in increases in flow rates akin to resonance, and due to frequency cancellation, even in the absence of a mean gradient. An algorithm to determine the constitutive functions of the integral fluid of order three is outlined.Nomenclature A n Rivlin-Ericksen tensor of order . - A k Non-oscillatory component of the first order linear viscoelastic oscillatory velocity field induced by the kth wave in the pressure gradient - d Half the gap between the plates - e x, e z Unit vectors in the longitudinal and orthogonal directions, respectively - G(s) Relaxation modulus - G History of the deformation - Stress response functional - I() Enhancement defined as the ratio of the frequency dependent part of the discharge to the frequencyindependent part of it at the third order - I *() Enhancement defined as the ratio of the increase in discharge due to oscillations to the total discharge without the oscillations - k Power index in the relaxation modulus G(s) - k i –1 Relaxation times in the Maxwell representation of the quadratic shear relaxation modulus (s 1, s 2) - m i –1, n i –1 Relaxation times in the Maxwell representations of the constitutive functions 1(s 1,s 2,s 3) and 4 (s 1, s 2,s 3), respectively - P Constant longitudinal pressure gradient - p Pressure field - mx ,(3) nz ,(3) Mean volume transport rates at the third order in the longitudinal and orthogonal directions, respectively - 0,(3), 1,(3) Frequency independent and dependent volume transport rates, respectively, at the third order - s = t- Difference between present and past times t and   相似文献

Numerical solutions are presented for the flow past a sphere placed at the centreline of a cylindrical tube for Reynolds numbers ranging from 0 to 150, using a boundary element method. Fluids are modelled by a variety of constitutive equations including the Newtonian, the Carreau and the Phan-Thien-Tanner models. The influence of inertia, shear-thinning and fluid elasticity on the flow field, drag and the pressure drop force-drag ratio is examined. Some results are compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

It is shown, by the use of the symmetry group of a fluid, that the stress in an elastic fluid depends on the current value of the deformation gradient through the absolute value of the determinant of the deformation gradient, whereas in a simple fluid it depends on this value of the determinant and the history of the relative deformation gradient and nothing else. This derivation is then used to show some of the errors in the criticisms made about the work of Noll. Additionally, a lacuna in Noll's derivation is removed to overcome the only valid criticism made about this theory of simple fluids.  相似文献

There is experimental evidence to suggest that even under steady-state conditions the velocity of solid spheres or bubbles moving through viscoelastic fluids can become time dependent. One of the possible explanations offered for interpreting this phenomenon has been the generation of a polymer depleted layer in the line of passage of the particles, which disappears due to the counterbalancing effect of molecular diffusion in the long range. We have done some careful experiments and measured these concentrations to show that no such depletion layers are formed. Alternative explanations of the phenomenon have been examined and the importance of the possible effects of microstructures generated through temporary associations has been emphasised.  相似文献

The paper describes pertinent laboratory tests to characterize the rheological properties of paper coatings with regard to blade coating over a very wide range of shear rates in both transient and steady-state shear flows. Shear rates as high as 106 s–1 can be reached by means of a gas-driven capillary rheometer. Examples for the evaluation of end effects, wall effects, and coating thixotropy are given. A stiff and fast Couette rheometer is used to determine flow curves and the shear stress overshoot in step shear rate tests. The primary normal stress difference can be measured up to 104 s–1 by means of a high shear cone-plate rheometer with piezo transducer. A correct evaluation of the measurements has to take into account inertia contributions to the normal force. First results using a sinusoidal modulation of the shear rate are presented.Paper presented at: International Symposium on Pigment Coating Structure and Rheology, Helsinki, Febr. 8–9, 1989  相似文献

Analysis of the Higashitani-Pritchard (HP) theory for a transverse slot provides insight into the nature of the errors involved. The effects of geometry, elasticity and asymmetry on the errors in the HP theory are also discussed. Inertial effects and the effect of asymmetry are included in the HP theory for a transverse slot, through modification of the pressure term in the momentum equation; the extended HP theory proposed in this work provides evidence as to the reasons for the failure of the Newtonian hole pressure as a correction term at higher Reynolds numbers. Finally, the HP theory is used to analyse a control volume of fluid in the axial slot geometry and deduce a rigorous sufficient condition for secondary flows to exist. This analysis illustrates the nature of the role played by the second normal-stress difference (N 2) in causing secondary flows, and suggests the possibility of the direction of the secondary flows being related to the sign ofN 2. The stress relaxation-time behaviour of processed cheese has been studied after compression by 5–20%. Data were corrected for surface friction effects, since it is only that part of the registered force which actually compresses the samples that relaxes exponentially. The method of successive residuals and an empirical normalization linearization procedures were used to analyse the data. In both cases it was found that several of the calculated rheological parameters, at any selected compression, were significantly higher after correcting for surface friction. The initial compression also influenced the magnitude of the rheological parameters.  相似文献

A slit die apparatus is used to measure exit pressures for five different polymer melts. Viscosity data obtained from the same apparatus agree well with values obtained from a cone-and-plate rheometer or a capillary rheometer. Except for a PVC sample where thermal degradation was found to occur, the exit pressures obtained by linear extrapolation of the measured pressure profiles are all positive, and increase with increasing shear stress. The values of the first normal stress difference calculated according to the exit pressure theory are of the right order of magnitude and in some cases correlate satisfactorily with values measured in a cone-and-plate rheometer. However, the high sensitivity of the exit pressure values to the method of extrapolation and the wild scatter of exit pressure data for some materials make it difficult to use the exit pressure method as a routine procedure for accurate determination of the first normal stress difference.  相似文献

The case of a linear viscoelastic medium is considered. The Carson transforms of the relaxation and retardation functions are expressed in two different ways, taking on the one hand the differential operator form of the constitutive equation, and on the other hand the generalized mechanical models. By identification we deduce general explicit expressions for the constant coefficients of the differential operator law, in terms of the discrete relaxation and retardation spectra.  相似文献

The stability of a laminar helical flow of pseudoplastic liquids in an annular gap with a rotating inner cylinder is investigated theoretically. The analysis is carried out under the assumption of a torroidal form of the secondary flow (torroidal Taylor vortices) for the narrow gap geometry. The power law model has been applied to describe the pseudoplasticity of liquids. The problem of the stability has been formulated with the aid of the method of small disturbances, and solved using the Galerkin method. In order to describe the stability limit the Reynolds and Taylor numbers defined with the aid of the mean viscosity value have been introduced. It has been found that pseudoplasticity has a considerably destabilizing influence on the Couette motion as well as on the helical flow in the initial range of the Reynolds number values (Re<30). A decrease of the flow index value,n, is accompanied by a decrease of the critical value of the Taylor number. This destabilizing effect of pseudoplasticity vanishes in the range of the larger values of the Reynolds number. In the rangeRe>30, the stability limit of the flow of pseudoplastic liquids can be described by a general dependence of the critical valueTa c onRe, which is consistent with results obtained for the case of Newtonian fluids. a frequency number (Eq. The motion of freely suspended rodlike particles has been observed in the pressure-driven flow between the two flat plates of a Hele Shaw flow cell at low Reynolds numbers. Data are reported for rodlike particles with aspect ratios of 12.0 suspended in a Newtonian fluid for gap thickness to particle length ratios of 3, 6, and 20; and for rodlike particles with aspect ratios between 5 and 8 in a non-Newtonian fluid (79.25 wt.% water, 20.2 wt.% glycerine, and 0.55 wt.% polyacrylamide). For the Newtonian fluid, the time-dependent orientation of the particles near and far from walls was shown to be in quantitative agreement with Jeffery's theory for ellipsoids suspended in a simple shear flow if an effective aspect ratio is calculated from the experimental period of rotation. Particles aligned with the flow direction and less than a particle half-length from a wall interacted irreversibly with the wall. For the non-Newtonian fluid, the timedependent orientation far from a wall was shown to be in qualitative agreement with Leal's theory for a second-order fluid; however, particles that were aligned with the flow direction and were near walls did not rotate.  相似文献

To investigate the viscoelastic behavior of fluid dispersions under steady shear flow conditions, an apparatus for parallel superimposed oscillations has been constructed which consists of a rotating cup containing the liquid under investigation in which a torsional pendulum is immersed. By measuring the resonance frequency and bandwidth of the resonator in both liquid and in air, the frequency and steady-shear-rate-dependent complex shear modulus can be obtained. By exchange of the resonator lumps it is possible to use the instrument at four different frequencies: 85, 284, 740, and 2440 Hz while the steady shear rate can be varied from 1 to 55 s–1. After treatment of the theoretical background, design, and measuring procedure, the calibration with a number of Newtonian liquids is described and the accuracy of the instrument is discussed.Notation a radius of the lump - A geometrical constant - b inner radius of the sample holder - c constant - C 1, C 2 apparatus constants - D damping of the pendulum - e x , e y , e z Cartesian basis - e r , e , e z orthonormal cylindrical basis - E geometrical constant - E t , 0 E t , t relative strain tensor - f function of shear rate - F t relative deformation tensor - G (t) memory function - G * complex shear modulus - G Re(G * ) - G Im(G * ) - h distance between plates - H * transfer function - , functional - i imaginary unit: i 2= – 1 - I moment of inertia - J exc excitation current - J 0 amplitude of J exc - k * = kik complex wave number - K torsional constant - K fourth order tensor - l length of the lump - L mutual inductance - M dr driving torque - M liq torque exerted by the liquid - 0 M liq, liq steady state and dynamic part of Mliq - n power of the shear rate - p isotropic pressure - Q quality factor - r radial position - R,R 0, R c Re(Z *, Z 0 * , Z c * ) - s time - t, t time - T temperature - T, 0 T, stress tensor - u velocity - U lock-in output - 0 velocity - V det detector output voltage - V sig, V cr signal and cross-talk part of V det - x Cartesian coordinate - X , X 0, X c Im(Z *, Z 0 * , Z c * ) - y Cartesian coordinate - z Cartesian coordinate, axial position  相似文献

Wall effects in the flow of flexible polymer solutions through small pores   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Effective viscosities of dilute and semidilute flexible solutions flowing through small cylindrical pores were determined in the Newtonian regime for various pore diameters. The low viscosities relative to the bulk were associated with a depletion phenomenon due to a steric exclusion of macromolecules from the pore wall. Using a two-fluid flow model, the depletion layer thickness was determined and discussed as a function of polymer concentration, ionic strength, and molecular weight. This thickness, which was constant and close to the macromolecule gyration radius in dilute regime, was found to decrease rapidly with polymer concentration in the semidilute regime.  相似文献
