Nanofluid is the term applied to a suspension of solid, nanometer-sized particles in conventional fluids; the most prominent features of such fluids include enhanced heat characteristics, such as convective heat transfer coefficient, in comparison to the base fluid without considerable alterations in physical and chemical properties. In this study, nanofluids of aluminum oxide and copper oxide were prepared in ethylene glycol separately. The effect of forced convective heat transfer coefficient in turbulent flow was calculated using a double pipe and plate heat exchangers. Furthermore, we calculated the forced convective heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids using theoretical correlations in order to compare the results with the experimental data. We also evaluated the effects of particle concentration and operating temperature on the forced convective heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids. The findings indicate considerable enhancement in convective heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids as compared to the base fluid, ranging from 2% to 50%. Moreover, the results indicate that with increasing nanoparticles concentration and nanofluid temperature, the convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid increases. Our experiments revealed that in lower temperatures, the theoretical and experimental findings coincide; however, in higher temperatures and with increased concentrations of the nanoparticles in ethylene glycol, the two set of results tend to have growing discrepancies.  相似文献

A comparative experimental study was conducted in order to investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics of water-based suspensions of microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) flowing through rectangular copper minichannels. The hydraulic diameter of the channels was 2.71 mm. MEPCM particles with an average size of 4.97 μm were used to form suspensions with mass concentrations ranging from 0 to 20%. The comparative experiments were performed for varying mass flow rates in the laminar region and varying thermal conditions. The cooling performance of the MEPCM suspensions strongly depended on the mass flow rate and the MEPCM mass concentration. The 5% suspension always showed a better cooling performance than water resulting in lower wall temperatures and enhanced heat transfer coefficients within the whole range of mass flow rates. The suspensions with higher mass concentrations, however, were more effective only at low mass flow rates. At higher mass flow rates they showed a less effective cooling performance than water.  相似文献

Unsteady flow and heat transfer from a horizontal isothermal square cylinder is studied numerically using a three-dimensional computational model to investigate the influence of buoyancy on the forced flow and heat transfer characteristics. The numerical model is based on a horizontal square cylinder subjected to laminar fluid flow in an unconfined channel. The governing equations in 3D form are solved using a fractional step method based on the finite difference discretization in addition to a Crank–Nicholson scheme employed to the convective and the viscous terms. Two working fluids–air (Pr = 0.7) and water (Pr = 7)–are considered, and the flow and heat transfer simulations were carried out for the Reynolds and Richardson numbers in the intervals 55 ≤ Re ≤ 250 and 0 ≤ Ri ≤ 2, respectively. The flow characteristics such as time-averaged drag/lift, rms drag/rms lift coefficients as well as Strouhal number were computed. The heat transfer from the cylinder is assessed by mean Nusselt number (and rms Nusselt number) over the total heated cylinder walls. As the buoyancy increases, the mass and the velocity of the fluid flowing underneath the cylinder increases. The fluid is injected into the near wake region with an upward motion which significantly alters the flow field in the downstream as well as upstream regions. The effects of Reynolds, Richardson and Prandtl numbers on the flow field and temperature distributions are discussed in detail. It is shown that the flow and heat transfer characteristics are influenced more for air than water. To fill the void in the literature, useful empirical correlations of practical importance are derived for pure forced and pure natural as well as mixed convection. The mixed convection correlations, in terms of the ratio of pure forced convection, are also developed, and their implications are discussed.

The present study experimentally investigates the effect of multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) suspensions on the convective heat transfer coefficients. The MWCNT suspensions used in this study were prepared by dispersing MWCNTs in deionized water 0.25 wt% arab gum solution. The heat transfer characteristics were measured for thermally developing laminar flow in a finite length horizontal circular pipe under isothermal wall conditions. The study was conducted over a range of Reynolds number of 300–2,300, based on 0.8 mm tube diameter. Results indicate enhancements of the convective heat transfer coefficient as a function of Reynolds number and volume fractions. An average enhancement of heat transfer coefficient of 50 % was observed over the base fluid. An overall increase of pumping force varying from 20 to 30 % over the flowing range is observed. The results suggest an optimum MWCNT volume fraction point of 0.1 % which gives the best heat transfer enhancement.  相似文献

Laminar double-diffusive natural convective flow of a binary fluid mixture in inclined square and rectangular cavities filled with a uniform porous medium in the presence of temperature-difference dependent heat generation (source) or absorption (sink) is considered. Transverse gradients of heat and mass are applied on two opposing walls of the cavity while the other two walls are kept adiabatic and impermeable to mass transfer. The problem is put in terms of the stream function-vorticity formulation. A numerical solution based on the finite-difference methodology is obtained for relatively high Lewis numbers. Representative results illustrating the effects of the inclination angle of the cavity, buoyancy ratio, Darcy number, heat generation or absorption coefficient and the cavity aspect ratio on the contour maps of the streamline, temperature, and concentration as well as the profiles of velocity, temperature and concentration at mid-section of the cavity are reported. In addition, numerical results for the average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are presented for various parametric conditions and discussed.  相似文献

The present experimental study investigates the controlling mechanism involved in a new combined vertical film-type absorber-evaporator exchanger operating near the condition of the triple point of water. This peculiar exchanger plays the most important role in the VFVPE process that can be utilized in many industrial applications, water pollution prevention, desalination, and purification of chemicals, for example. The method of analogy of the heat and mass transfer near the film surface is used to calculate the interfacial concentration and temperature, and thus determining the heat and mass transfer coefficients. It is shown that the working temperature level has the negligible effect on the characteristics of the mass transfer. The mass transfer coefficients are higher than those obtained in the case of isothermal absorption due to the convective effect arisen from vapor absorption in the falling solution film. The water flow rate in the evaporator side has a minor effect on the performance of this combined exchanger. The overall mean heat transfer coefficient remains nearly constant in the lower range of the solution flow rate of the absorber; however, it would increase with increasing solution flow rate in the higher range. The correlating equations for both the heat and mass transfer coefficients are suggested.  相似文献

The combined effect of conduction-convection-radiation on natural convection flow of an optically thick Newtonian fluid with gray radiant properties, confined in a porous media square cavity with Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer drag is studied numerically. For a gray fluid, Rosseland diffusion approximation is considered. It is assumed that (i) the temperature of the left vertical wall varies linearly with height, (ii) the right vertical and top walls are at a lower temperature, and (iii) the bottom wall is uniformly-heated. The governing equations are solved using the alternate direct implicit method together with the successive over relaxation technique. The investigation of the effect of governing parameters, namely, the Forschheimer resistance (Γ), the temperature difference (Δ), and the Plank number (Rd), on the flow pattern and heat transfer characteristics is carried out. It can be seen that the reduction of flow and heat transfer occur as the Forschheimer resistance is increased. On the other hand, both the flow strength and heat transfer increase as the temperature ratio Δ is increased.  相似文献

Nanofluids are obtained by dispersing homogeneously nanoparticles into a base fluid. Nanofluids often exhibit higher heat transfer rate in comparison with the base fluid. In the present study, forced convection heat transfer under laminar flow conditions was investigated experimentally for three types of non-Newtonian nanofluids in a circular tube with constant wall temperature. CMC solution was used as the base fluid and γ-Al2O3, TiO2 and CuO nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed to create nanodispersions of different concentrations. Nanofluids as well as the base fluid show shear thinning (pseudoplastic) rheological behavior. Results show that the presence of nanoparticles increases the convective heat transfer of the nanodispersions in comparison with the base fluid. The convective heat transfer enhancement is more significant when both the Peclet number and the nanoparticle concentration are increased. The increase in convective heat transfer is higher than the increase caused by the augmentation of the effective thermal conductivity.  相似文献

The structured packed bed is considered a promising reactor owing to its low pressure drop and good heat transfer performance. In the heat transfer process of thermal storage in packed beds, natural convection plays an important role. To obtain the mixed convective heat transfer characteristics and mechanisms in packed beds, numerical simulations and coupling analyses were carried out in this study on the unsteady process of fluid flow and heat transfer. A three-dimensional model of the flow channel in the packed bed was established, and the Navier–Stokes equations and Laminar model were adopted for the computations. The effects of the driving force on fluid flow around a particle were studied in detail. The differences in velocity and density distributions under different flow directions due to effect of the aiding flow or opposing flow were intuitively demonstrated and quantitatively analyzed. It was found that the driving force strengthens the fluid flow near the particle surface when aiding flow occurs and inhibits the fluid flow when opposing flow occurs. The boundary layer structure was changed by the natural convection, which in turn influences the field synergy angle. For the aiding flow, the coordination between the velocity and density fields is higher than that for the opposing flow. By analysis the effects of physical parameters on mixed convective heat transfer, it is indicated that with an increase in the fluid-solid temperature difference or the particle diameter, or a decrease in the fluid temperature, the strengthening or inhibiting effect of natural convection on the heat transfer became more significant.  相似文献

The effect of lateral mass flux on mixed convection heat and mass transfer in a saturated porous medium adjacent to an inclined permeable surface is analyzed. A similarity solution is obtained when surface temperature and concentration, free stream velocity and injection/suction velocity of fluid are prescribed as power functions of distance from the leading edge. The cases when the flow and buoyancy forces are in the same and opposite directions are discussed both for aiding and opposing buoyancy effects. The governing parameters are the mixed convection parameter Gr, the Lewis number Le, the buoyancy ratio N, the lateral mass flux parameter f w, representing the effects of injection or withdrawal of fluid at the wall, and λ which specifies three cases of the inclined plate. The interactive effect of these parameters on heat and mass transfer rates are presented. It is observed that the diffusion ratio (Le) has a more pronounced effect on concentration field than on flow and temperature fields. It is found that the rates of heat and mass transfer increase with suction and decrease with injection of the fluid. Received on 31 August 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

MHD mixed free-forced heat and mass convective steady incompressible laminar boundary layer flow of a gray optically thick electrically conducting viscous fluid past a semi-infinite inclined plate for high temperature and concentration differences is studied. A uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plate. The density of the fluid is assumed to reduce exponentially with temperature and concentration. The usual Boussinesq approximation is neglected due to the high temperature and concentration differences between the plate and the ambient fluid. The Rosseland approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to ordinary differential equations, which are numerically solved by applying an efficient technique. The effects of the density/temperature parameter n, the density/concentration parameter m, the local magnetic parameter Mx and the radiation parameter R are examined on the velocity, temperature and concentration distributions as well as the coefficients of skin-friction, heat flux and mass flux.  相似文献

The convective heat transfer of SiO2/water colloidal suspensions (5-34 wt.%) is investigated experimentally in a flow loop with a horizontal tube test section whose wall temperature is imposed. Experiments were performed at different inlet temperatures (20, 50, 70 °C) in cooling and/or heating conditions at various flow rates (200 < Re < 10,000). The Reynolds and Nusselt numbers were deduced by using thermal conductivity and viscosity values measured with the same temperature conditions as those in the tests. Results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient values are increased from 10% to 60% compared to those of pure water. They also show that the general trend of standard correlations is respected. The problem of suspension stability at the highest temperatures is discussed. In order to evaluate the benefits provided by the enhanced properties of the nanofluids studied, an energetic performance evaluation criterion (PEC) is defined. This PEC decreases as the nanoparticle concentration is increased. This process is also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

A fluid flow and heat transfer model has been developed for the reactive, porous bed of the biomass gasifier to simulate pressure drop, temperature profile in the bed and flow rates. The conservation equations, momentum equation and energy equation are used to describe fluid and heat transport in porous gasifier bed. The model accounted for drag at wall, and the effect of radial as well as axial variation in bed porosity to predict pressure drop in bed. Heat transfer has been modeled using effective thermal conductivity approach. Model predictions are validated against the experiments, while effective thermal conductivity values are tested qualitatively using models available in literature. Parametric analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of various parameters on bed temperature profile and pressure drop through the gasifier. The temperature profile is found to be very sensitive to gas flow rate, and heat generation in oxidation zone, while high bed temperature, gas flow rate and the reduction in feedstock particle size are found to cause a marked increase in pressure drop through the gasifier. The temperatures of the down stream zones are more sensitive to any change in heat generation in the bed as compared to upstream zone. Author recommends that the size of preheating zone may be extended up to pyrolysis zone in order to enhance preheating of input air, while thermal insulation should not be less than 15 cm.  相似文献

In this study, Darcy Forchheimer flow paradigm, which is a useful paradigm in fields such as petroleum engineering where high flow velocity effects are common, has been analyzed with artificial intelligence approach. In this context, first of all, Darcy–Forchheimer flow of Ree–Eyring fluid along a permeable stretching surface with convective boundary conditions has been examined and heat and mass transfer mechanisms have been investigated by including the effect of chemical process, heat generation/absorption, and activation energy. Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model has been used to analyze heat transfer properties. Within the scope of optimizing Darcy–Forchheimer flow of Ree–Eyring fluid; three different artificial neural network models have been developed to predict Nusselt number, Sherwood number, and skin friction coefficient values. The developed artificial neural network model has been able to predict Nusselt number, Sherwood number, and skin friction coefficient values with high accuracy. The findings obtained as a result of the study showed that artificial neural networks are an ideal tool that can be used to model Darcy–Forchheimer Ree–Eyring fluid flow towards a permeable stretch layer with activation energy and a convective boundary condition.  相似文献

Distilled water and nitrogen gas used as the working fluids flow through the stainless steel microtube with inner diameter 168 μm outer diameter 406 μm. Using the Joule heating, the wall temperature field photos of the microtube is acquired by employing an IR camera and the temperature and the volume flow rate of the inlet and the outlet of microtube are measured. A correlation between the axial wall heat conduction and the convective heat transfer is obtained by theoretical analysis based on the experimental results. The investigative results clearly show that the axial heat conduction can reduce the convective heat transfer in the stainless steel microtube and the decrement may reach 2% compared to the convective heat transfer when the working fluid is nitrogen gas, however, the decrement can be neglected for distilled water as the working fluid.  相似文献

A boundary layer analysis has been presented to study the combined effects of viscous dissipation, Joule heating, transpiration, heat source, thermal diffusion and Hall current on the hydromagnetic free convection and mass transfer flow of an electrically conducting, viscous, homogeneous, incompressible fluid past an infinite vertical porous plate. The governing partial differential equations of the hydromagnetic free convective boundary layer flow are reduced to non-linear ordinary differential equations and solutions for primary velocity, secondary velocity, temperature and concentration field are obtained for large suction. The expressions for the skin-friction, the heat transfer and the mass transfer are also derived. The results of the study are discussed through graphs and tables for different numerical values of the parameters entered into the equations governing the flow.  相似文献

Coiled tubes and nanofludics are two significant techniques to enhance the heat transfer ability of thermal equipments. The forced convective heat transfer and the pressure drop of nanofluid inside straight tube and helical coiled one with a constant wall heat flux were studied experimentally. Distilled water was used as a host fluid and Nanofluids of aqueous TiO2 nanoparticles (50 nm) suspensions were prepared in various volume concentrations of 0.25–2 %. The heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids is obtained for different nanoparticle concentrations as well as various Reynolds numbers. The experiments covered a range of Reynolds number of 500–4,500. The results show the considerable enhancement of heat transfer rate, which is due to the nanoparticles present in the fluid. Heat transfer coefficient increases by increasing the volume concentration of nanoparticles as well as Reynolds number. Moreover, due to the curvature of the tube when fluid flows inside helical coiled tube instead of straight one, both convective heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop of fluid grow considerably. Also, the thermal performance factors for tested nanofluids are greater than unity and the maximum thermal performance factor of 3.72 is found with the use of 2.0 % volume concentration of nanofluid at Reynolds number of 1,750.  相似文献

This investigation presents numerical treatment of governing equations pertaining to thermosolutal flow within an annulus and an application of a model describing the important physical phenomenon as found in muffle furnace. The inner side of the annulus is exposed to high temperature and high solute concentration while the outer side of the annulus is maintained at low temperature and low solute concentration. Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model is used to study the flow, heat and solute transfer in a non-Darcian saturated porous media. The solution is obtained upon application of control volume integration. Modified MAC method is used for the numerical solution of governing equations. Gradient dependent consistent hybrid upwind scheme of second order (GDCHUSSO) is used for discretization of the convective terms. The parameters such as Rayleigh-Darcy number, Darcy number, buoyancy ratio and width ratio, that govern the flow phenomenon have been identified and their effects are critically examined. The fluid flow pattern in the annular space and the associated heat and mass transfer are conceptualized from the obtained isoconcentration, isotherm and flowline contour maps.  相似文献
