This paper discusses how gamma irradiation plants are putting the latest advances in computer and information technology to use for better process control, cost savings, and strategic advantages.

Some irradiator operations are gaining significant benefits by integrating computer technology and robotics with real-time information processing, multi-user databases, and communication networks. The paper reports on several irradiation facilities that are making good use of client/server LANs, user-friendly graphics interfaces, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed I/O with real-time sensor devices, trending analysis, real-time product tracking, dynamic product scheduling, and automated dosimetry reading. These plants are lowering costs by fast and reliable reconciliation of dosimetry data, easier validation to GMP requirements, optimizing production flow, and faster release of sterilized products to market.

There is a trend in the manufacturing sector towards total automation using “predictive process control”. Real-time verification of process parameters “on-the-run” allows control parameters to be adjusted appropriately, before the process strays out of limits. Applying this technology to the gamma radiation process, control will be based on monitoring the key parameters such as time, and making adjustments during the process to optimize quality and throughput. Dosimetry results will be used as a quality control measurement rather than as a final monitor for the release of the product. Results are correlated with the irradiation process data to quickly and confidently reconcile variations. Ultimately, a parametric process control system utilizing responsive control, feedback and verification will not only increase productivity and process efficiency, but can also result in operating within tighter dose control set points.  相似文献

A set of Ce3+ activated silicate- and phosphate-based scintillating glasses were submitted to γ irradiation in the 60Co radioisotope source “Calliope” (ENEA-Casaccia in Rome, Italy) in the dose range between 1 and 250 Gy (3.7 Gy/h). The effect of ionising radiation was probed by transmission measurements performed before and after each irradiation on all analysed samples. From these data, the radiation-induced absorption coefficient was calculated, proportional to the density of colour centres induced by irradiation in the solid matrix. Results are discussed by taking into account the possible dependence of radiation hardness on the composition of glass matrix.  相似文献

“Generalized modulus–ultimate elongation profile” was induced from the relationship between the modulus and the ultimate elongation of an elastomer that was quantitatively added crosslinking and scission. This profile can be used to evaluate the time-accelerated irradiation methods of ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer. The irradiation under low dose rate (0.33 kGy/h) at room temperature was the reference condition. The short-time irradiation condition was 4.2 kGy/h in 0.5 MPa oxygen at room temperature and 5.0 kGy/h in air at 70 °C. The former tended to bring about the higher ratio of scission than the reference condition; the latter tended to bring about the higher ratio of crosslinking.  相似文献

Much basic research has been done on the crosslinking behaviour of so-called “engineering plastics”. Up to now the industrial conversion to actual manufacture of multifunctional electronic components has gained ever increasing importance in the plastics industry and will continue to do so in the coming years. Examples of this are SMD (surface mounted device) technology, and 3D-MID (3-dimensional moulded interconnected devices) technology. These techniques require materials with high short-term temperature stability. In this paper it will be discussed which engineering plastics are significant for the radiation crosslinking process, for both technical and commercial reasons. The main topics will be the crosslinking behaviour of Polybutylenterephthalate (PBT) and Polyamide (PA). The importance and the challenges to the irradiation industry, as well as practical applications, will be shown.  相似文献

Two industrial scale, “ROBO” type 60Co gamma irradiation facilities have recently been put into operation in Syria and Peru, and the dosimetry commissioning of both plants have been carried out to determine dose distribution within products and to calculate plant parameters such as efficiency, dose uniformity ratio and throughput. There are some design modifications between the two plants in connection with the location of the carriers with respect to the source plaque and also to each other. The effect of these construction modifications on the plant parameters is discussed in the analysis of the dose distribution data measured in the carriers with depth and height among the four irradiation rows on both sides of the source plaque. The plant parameters were also calculated for different product densities using the technical data of the facilities, and the calculated and measured results were compared to each other.  相似文献

An extensive study of the radiation resistance of microbial species constituting the bioburden of a number of different medical devices obtained from Japanese medical device manufacturers has been carried out. A standard protocol for determining radiation resistance was used and validated at the fourteen centres involved in the study. Individual microbial isolates from the bioburden obtained from seven different devices manufactured in these centres were studied. A total of 3742 unselected isolates were obtained, of which 197 failed to survive long enough for subsequent radiation resistance studies. The remainder were subjected to an initial screen test to identify those organisms that were sensitive to the lethal effects of radiation with a D10 of < 1.5kGy. The 465 isolates that survived the screen doses were then tested for survival in an incremental series of radiation doses using methods similar to those of Whitby (1979) and Yan and Tallentire(1995). The isolates from “dry” devices were more resistant than those obtained from the one water filled (“wet”) device studied. The overall distribution of radiation resistance among the isolates was considered to be similar to that forming the “Standard Distribution of Resistance” (SDR) included in the ISO International Standard 11137 “Sterilization of Health Care Products — Requirements for validation and routine control — Radiation sterilization”.  相似文献

A 12 MeV linear accelerator is currently used for electron beam processing of power semiconductor devices for lifetime control and, on an experimental basis, for food irradiation, sludge treatment etc. In order to control the irradiation process a simple, quick and reliable method for a direct evaluation of dose and fluence in a broad electron beam has been developed. This paper presents the results obtained using a “charge collector” which measures the charge absorbed in a graphite target exposed in air. Calibration of the system with super-Fricke dosimeter and comparison of absorbed dose results obtained with plastic dosimeters and alanine pellets are discussed.  相似文献

A ZnO-mediated photocatalysis process was used to successfully degrade Basic Blue 11 (BB-11) under visible light irradiation. The effects of influential factors like initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, and initial pH were studied. To obtain a better understanding the mechanistic details of ZnO-assisted photodegradation of the BB-11 dye with low watt visible light irradiation, a large number of the intermediates resulting from the photodegradation were separated, identified, and characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography–photodiode array-mass spectrometry (HPLC–PDA-MS) techniques. The results indicated that the N-de-alkylation and oxidative degradation of BB-11 dye took place and that N-hydroxyalkylated intermediates were generated during the process. From the same identified intermediates we got under UV or visible light irradiation, it is proposed that the major oxidant under visible light irradiation was OH radical, not O2. HPLC–PDA-MS analysis verified the identity of intermediates, and a reaction mechanism based on them was proposed.  相似文献

We compared the photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) process of storage phosphor KCl:Eu under the irradiation of X-ray, 2.0 MeV H+ ions and 2.0 MeV He+ ions. The purpose of the irradiation of H+ and He+ ions was to mimic the irradiation effects of neutrons. In each case, it was revealed that F-centers were involved in the PSL process. We observed an entirely different fluence-dependent PSL behavior between the X-ray and the ion irradiation, whereas the behavior of the F-center absorption was quite similar. This difference was due to the different yields of the trapping sites for the electrons liberated from the F-centers, and the difference in the yield was ascribed to the difference in the excitation density. This result clearly indicated a marked difference in the PSL process under X-ray and neutron irradiations and indicated that the analysis of the PSL process under ion irradiation is highly important for the application of PSL phosphors to neutron radiography.  相似文献

High-power bipolar semiconductor devices (thyristors and diodes) in a disc-type shape are key components (semiconductor switches) for high-power electronic systems. These systems are important for the economic design of energy transmission systems, i.e. high-power drive systems, static compensation and high-voltage DC transmission lines. In their factory located in Pretzfeld, Germany, the company, eupec GmbH+Co.KG (eupec), is producing disc-type devices with ceramic encapsulation in the high-end range for the world market. These elements have to fulfil special customer requirements and therefore deliver tailor-made trade-offs between their on-state voltage and dynamic switching behaviour. This task can be achieved by applying a dedicated electron irradiation on the semiconductor pellets, which tunes this trade-off. In this paper, the requirements to the irradiation company Mediscan GmbH, from the point of view of the semiconductor manufacturer, are described. The actual strategy for controlling the irradiation results to fulfil these requirements are presented, together with the choice of relevant parameters from the viewpoint of the irradiation company. The set of process parameters monitored, using statistical process control (SPC) techniques, includes beam current and energy, conveyor speed and irradiation geometry. The results are highlighted and show the successful co-operation in this business. Watching this process vice versa, an idea is presented and discussed to develop the possibilities of a highly sensitive dose detection device by using modified diodes, which could function as accurate yet cheap and easy-to-use detectors as routine dosimeters for irradiation institutes.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of irradiation temperature on sol fraction-dose relationship of tluoropolymers was studied. It was found that the increasing of irradiation temperature can result in the decreasing of βvalue of fluoropolymer, which increases the crosslinking probability of fluoropolymer. The relationship between crosslinking parameter βand irradiation temperature (T_i)of fluoropolymer is established as follows:β=2.2×10~(-3) T_g+4×10~(-4)(T_g-T_i)+0.206.values of some tluoropolymers calculated from the above expression are in agreement with the experimental values.  相似文献

Summary Results are given from the NIST component of a pilot (“winter-over”) study of seasonal patterns of natural and anthropogenic species in air and snow transported to Summit, Greenland. Central to this research is the quantitative apportionment of fossil and biomass particulate carbon, based on advanced (micromolar) 14C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) applied to remote snow samples containing as little as 9 µg C/kg. The measurements were made practicable through stringent attention to the nature and sources of the isotopic-chemical blank, resulting in a blank reduction from »5 µg C to <0.5 µg C. An important result of this work is the first evidence of a seasonal pattern in biomass-C particles in Greenland snow. Although 14C AMS data serve to resolve fossil and biomass carbon quantitatively, a deeper understanding of the aerosol sources and character demands a multidisciplinary approach. This is illustrated with “multi-spectrometric” macro- and micro-analytical data for two cases involving substantial incursions of biomass aerosol to the Summit, Greenland snow.  相似文献

Wrinkles and photo-oxidation reactions are widely found in soft materials, which are intimately associated with the failure of materials and structures. It is expected that the photo-oxidation process could also have a positive effect on the material and its surface. Here, we report the photo-oxidation of 2-(4-dietheylaminophenyl)-4,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl) imidazole (DEA-TAI) into a wrinkled bilayer system to control surface wrinkle and fluorescent patterns, in which a supramolecular polymer network composed of carboxylic acid-containing copolymer (PS-BA-AA; PS=poly(styrene), BA=butyl acrylate; AA=acrylic acid) and DEA-TAI were used as the skin layer. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation can induce photo-oxidation of the imidazole ring of DEA-TAI to weaken the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between PS-BA-AA and DEA-TAI, resulting in the release of stress in the bilayer system. The wrinkled morphology and fluorescence of the surface can be simultaneously regulated by photo-oxidation of DEA-TAI under UV light, and the resulting wrinkles are extremely sensitive to the pH value, which can be quickly and reversibly erased by NH3 gas. Smart surfaces with specific hierarchical wrinkles and fluorescence can be achieved by selective irradiation with photomasks, which may find potential applications in smart displays and multi-code information storage.  相似文献

In order to obtain detailed insights into the physicochemical mechanism of DNA damage induction, “in situ” measurement of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal from DNA constituent nucleobases, guanine and adenine, has been performed in a vacuum using monochromatic synchrotron soft X-rays. We found that short-lived unpaired electron species arise only during irradiation to the evaporated thin film on a surface. The EPR spectrum of the short-lived species significantly depends on the photon energy irradiated, and the spin concentration obtained from the EPR spectra shows a similar fine structure to the X-ray photoabsorption spectra (X-ray absorption near edge structure; XANES). For the adenine sample, the spin concentration alters strikingly by water absorption on the sample surface. Trapping of photo- or Auger electrons into a newly generated potential in the nucleobases as the consequence of photoelectric effect is suggested as mechanisms of the induction of the short-lived species.  相似文献

Summary Thin poly(vinylidene fluoride/hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF/HFP)) films ahve been irradiated with gammarays to induce the initiation of styrene grafting by the indirect method. To obtain a better understanding of the radiation-grafting process we have used size exclusion chromatography (SEC) to study the effect of irradiation of this polymer and the evolution of the molecular weights of the polystyrene (PS) grafted chains as a function of the grafting time. Pristine, irradiated and PS radiation-grafted samples have been compared. We present evidence that the gamma irradiation induces both scission and crosslinking of the P(VDF/HFP) chains. We show that the average molecular weights of the PS grafted chains increase with grafting time and that the asymmetry of the chromatographic peak increases also. These grafted chains have molecular weights much higher than those of pristine P(VDF/HFP) and they cannot be confused with PS homopolymer chains, which have higher molecular weights as both, pristine and radiation-grafted P (VDF/HFP). Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RPHPLC) has shown the absence of additives in pristine P(VDF/HFP) and has provided evidence of the presence of oligomers.  相似文献

Three subcommittees of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) are developing standards on various aspects of radiation processing. Subcommittee E10.01 “Dosimetry for Radiation Processing” has published 9 standards on how to select and calibrate dosimeters, where to put them, how many to use, and how to use individual types of dosimeter systems. The group is also developing standards on how to use gamma, electron beam, and x-ray facilities for radiation processing, and a standard on how to treat dose uncertainties. Efforts are underway to promote inclusion of these standards into procedures now being developed by government agencies and by international groups such as the United Nations' International Consultative Group on Food Irradiation (ICGFI) in order to harmonize regulations and help avoid trade barriers.

Subcommittee F10.10 “Food Processing and Packaging” has completed standards on good irradiation practices for meat and poultry and for fresh fruits, and is developing similar standards for the irradiation of seafood and spices. These food-related standards are based on practices previously published by ICGFI.

Subcommittee E10.07 on “Radiation Dosimetry for Radiation Effects on Materials and Devices” principally develops standards for determining doses for radiation hardness testing of electronics. Some, including their standards on the Fricke and TLD dosimetry systems are equally useful in other radiation processing applications.  相似文献

Degree of microbiological decontamination, organoleptic and physico-chemical properties of natural honeys were investigated after radiation treatment. Seven kinds of honeys were irradiated with the beams of 10 MeV electrons from a 10 kW linear accelerator “Elektronika 10-10” at the dose 10 kGy.

It was shown, that after irradiation, the total count of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and moulds decrease by 99%. The antibiotic value in investigated honeys increased in turn from 1.67 to 2.67 after irradiation. Such factors and parameters of investigated honeys as their consistency, content of water and saccharose, acidity, the diastase and 5-HMF values were not changed significantly after irradiation.

Decontamination by irradiation is a process which allows us to obtain high microbiological purity of honeys. It is especially needed, when honeys are used in surgical treatment of injuries and in nutrition of babies with food deficiency.  相似文献

A Technical Information Report, TIR 17, entitled, “Radiation Sterilization Material Qualification” has been published by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) to provide guidance in order to increase the quality and reduce the cost and amount of time required for performing medical device material qualifications. It contains four sections that cover the fundamentals of material selection, processing, testing and accelerated aging programs. The last of these sections, entitled “Accelerating Aging Programs,” provides step-by-step guidance for simple, empirical accelerated programs of use to the medical device industry. The methods are based on van’t Hoff’s observation that the rate of chemical reactions increases by a factor of two for every 10°C increase in temperature, the Q10=2 rule.

With critical patient safety concerns in the medical device industry, it is appropriate for both device manufacturers and regulators to ask if simple, empirical methods such as those outlined in TIR 17 are reasonable and responsible. One reason for confidence in the methods is their success when used in aging environments that are much more severe than those commonly used in the medical device industry. Another reason for confidence in the methods is found from the observation that the working equations of the method can be derived from theory. This paper provides an overview of the thermal accelerated aging theory that forms the basis for the working equations of the accelerated aging programs of TIR 17. Assumptions used are examined and found reasonable; the theoretical foundation is established. While this foundation provides added confidence for the application of the methods of TIR 17 to the medical device industry, it is emphasized that application of the methods within appropriate boundaries is critical. Theoretical boundaries are explained and demonstrated by means of Arrhenius plots, and practical boundaries discussed.  相似文献
