In this paper, we investigate variable neighbourhood search (VNS) approaches for the university examination timetabling problem. In addition to a basic VNS method, we introduce variants of the technique with different initialisation methods including a biased VNS and its hybridisation with a Genetic Algorithm. A number of different neighbourhood structures are analysed. It is demonstrated that the proposed technique is able to produce high quality solutions across a wide range of benchmark problem instances. In particular, we demonstrate that the Genetic Algorithm, which intelligently selects appropriate neighbourhoods to use within the biased VNS, produces the best known results in the literature, in terms of solution quality, on some of the benchmark instances. However, it requires relatively large amount of computational time. Possible extensions to this overall approach are also discussed.  相似文献

Tabu search is a meta-heuristic problem solving technique that, when applied carefully, provides near optimal solutions in a very short time. In this paper, we have described the use of tabu search for solving problems related to very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design automation. Specifically, we have demonstrated the use for VLSI circuit partitioning and placement. We present a tabu search based circuit bi-partitioning technique that partitions circuits with the goal of minimizing the size of the cutset between the partitions. Then, we use tabu search techniques along with force directed placement techniques to accomplish the physical placement of VLSI circuits on regular two-dimensional arrays with the goal of minimizing the placement time. We use empirical data from partitioning and placement of benchmark circuits to test our techniques. Our methods show improvement when compared to partitioning techniques from the literature and commercially available placement tools. Relative to the literature, our tabu search bi-partitioning technique improves on the best known minimum cuts for several benchmark circuits. Relative to commercially available computer aided design tools, our tabu search based placement approach shows dramatic (20×) speedup in execution time without negative impact on the quality of the solution.  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation of a simple generic hyper-heuristic approach upon a set of widely used constructive heuristics (graph coloring heuristics) in timetabling. Within the hyper-heuristic framework, a tabu search approach is employed to search for permutations of graph heuristics which are used for constructing timetables in exam and course timetabling problems. This underpins a multi-stage hyper-heuristic where the tabu search employs permutations upon a different number of graph heuristics in two stages. We study this graph-based hyper-heuristic approach within the context of exploring fundamental issues concerning the search space of the hyper-heuristic (the heuristic space) and the solution space. Such issues have not been addressed in other hyper-heuristic research. These approaches are tested on both exam and course benchmark timetabling problems and are compared with the fine-tuned bespoke state-of-the-art approaches. The results are within the range of the best results reported in the literature. The approach described here represents a significantly more generally applicable approach than the current state of the art in the literature. Future work will extend this hyper-heuristic framework by employing methodologies which are applicable on a wider range of timetabling and scheduling problems.  相似文献

The black-and-white travelling salesman problem (BWTSP) is an extension to the well-known TSP by partitioning the set of vertices into black and white vertices, and imposing cardinality and length constraints between two consecutive black vertices in a Hamiltonian tour. BWTSP has various applications in aircraft routing, telecommunication network design and logistics. In this paper, we develop several tabu search (TS) heuristics for solving the BWTSP. Our TS is built upon a new efficient neighbourhood structure, which exploits both the permutation and knapsack features of BWTSP. We also embed our TS as a heuristic procedure to improve the upper bound in a mixed-integer linear programming method. Extensive computational experiment on both benchmark and randomly generated instances shows effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithms. Our algorithms are able to obtain optimal and near optimal solutions to small instances in seconds, and find feasible solutions to large instances that have not been solved by the existing methods in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a perturbed reactive-based neighbourhood search algorithm for the expanding constraint multiple-choice knapsack problem. It combines reactive tabu search with some specific neighbourhood search strategies to approximately solve the problem. The tests were conducted on randomly generated instances and executed in comparable benchmark scenarios to those of the literature. The results outperform those of the Cplex solver and demonstrate the high quality of the two approach versions.  相似文献

The capacitated minimum spanning tree (CMST) problem is to find a minimum cost spanning tree in a network where nodes have specified demands, with an additional capacity constraints on the subtrees incident to a given source node s. The capacitated minimum spanning tree problem arises as an important subproblem in many telecommunication network design problems. In a recent paper, Ahuja et al. (Math. Program. 91 (2001) 71) proposed two very large-scale neighborhood search algorithms for the capacitated minimum spanning tree problem. Their first node-based neighborhood structure is obtained by performing multi-exchanges involving several trees where each tree contributes a single node. Their second tree-based neighborhood structure is obtained by performing multi-exchanges where each tree contributes a subtree. The computational investigations found that node-based multi-exchange neighborhood gives the best performance for the homogenous demand case (when all nodes have the same demand), and the tree-based multi-exchange neighborhood gives the best performance for the heterogeneous demand case (when nodes may have different demands). In this paper, we propose a composite neighborhood structure that subsumes both the node-based and tree-based neighborhoods, and outperforms both the previous neighborhood search algorithms for solving the capacitated minimum spanning tree problem on standard benchmark instances. We also develop improved dynamic programming based exact algorithms for searching the composite neighborhood.  相似文献

The structured representation of cases by attribute graphs in a case-based reasoning (CBR) system for course timetabling has been the subject of previous research by the authors. In that system, the case base is organized as a decision tree and the retrieval process chooses those cases that are sub-attribute graph isomorphic to the new case. The drawback of that approach is that it is not suitable for solving large problems. This paper presents a multiple-retrieval approach that partitions a large problem into small solvable sub-problems by recursively inputting the unsolved part of the graph into the decision tree for retrieval. The adaptation combines the retrieved partial solutions of all the partitioned sub-problems and employs a graph heuristic method to construct the whole solution for the new case. We present a methodology which is not dependent upon problem-specific information and which, as such, represents an approach which underpins the goal of building more general timetabling systems. We also explore the question of whether this multiple-retrieval CBR could be an effective initialization method for local search methods such as hill climbing, tabu search and simulated annealing. Significant results are obtained from a wide range of experiments. An evaluation of the CBR system is presented and the impact of the approach on timetabling research is discussed. We see that the approach does indeed represent an effective initialization method for these approaches.  相似文献

The capacitated minimum spanning tree (CMST) problem is to find a minimum cost spanning tree with an additional cardinality constraint on the sizes of the subtrees incident to a given root node. The CMST problem is an NP-complete problem, and existing exact algorithms can solve only small size problems. Currently, the best available heuristic procedures for the CMST problem are tabu search algorithms due to Amberg et al. and Sharaiha et al. These algorithms use two-exchange neighborhood structures that are based on exchanging a single node or a set of nodes between two subtrees. In this paper, we generalize their neighborhood structures to allow exchanges of nodes among multiple subtrees simultaneously; we refer to such neighborhood structures as multi-exchange neighborhood structures. Our first multi-exchange neighborhood structure allows exchanges of single nodes among several subtrees. Our second multi-exchange neighborhood structure allows exchanges that involve multiple subtrees. The size of each of these neighborhood structures grows exponentially with the problem size without any substantial increase in the computational times needed to find improved neighbors. Our approach, which is based on the cyclic transfer neighborhood structure due to Thompson and Psaraftis and Thompson and Orlin transforms a profitable exchange into a negative cost subset-disjoint cycle in a graph, called an improvement graph, and identifies these cycles using variants of shortest path label-correcting algorithms. Our computational results with GRASP and tabu search algorithms based on these neighborhood structures reveal that (i) for the unit demand case our algorithms obtained the best available solutions for all benchmark instances and improved some; and (ii) for the heterogeneous demand case our algorithms improved the best available solutions for most of the benchmark instances with improvements by as much as 18%. The running times our multi-exchange neighborhood search algorithms are comparable to those taken by two-exchange neighborhood search algorithms. A significant body of recent literature has explored various research directions in hyper-heuristics (which can be thought as heuristics to choose heuristics). In this paper, we extend our previous work to construct a unified graph-based hyper-heuristic (GHH) framework, under which a number of local search-based algorithms (as the high level heuristics) are studied to search upon sequences of low-level graph colouring heuristics. To gain an in-depth understanding on this new framework, we address some fundamental issues concerning neighbourhood structures and characteristics of the two search spaces (namely, the search spaces of the heuristics and the actual solutions). Furthermore, we investigate efficient hybridizations in GHH with local search methods and address issues concerning the exploration of the high-level search and the exploitation ability of the local search. These, to our knowledge, represent entirely novel directions in hyper-heuristics. The efficient hybrid GHH obtained competitive results compared with the best published results for both benchmark course and exam timetabling problems, demonstrating its efficiency and generality across different problem domains. Possible extensions upon this simple, yet general, GHH framework are also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a tabu search procedure for solving the uniform graph partitioning problem. Tabu search, an abstract heuristic search method, has been shown to have promise in solving several NP-hard problems, such as job shop and flow shop scheduling, vehicle routing, quadratic assignment, and maximum satisfiability. We compare tabu search to other heuristic procedures for graph partitioning, and demonstrate that tabu search is superior to other solution approaches for the uniform graph partitioning problem both with respect to solution quality and computational requirements.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop new heuristic procedures for the maximum diversity problem (MDP). This NP-hard problem has a significant number of practical applications such as environmental balance, telecommunication services or genetic engineering. The proposed algorithm is based on the tabu search methodology and incorporates memory structures for both construction and improvement. Although proposed in seminal tabu search papers, memory-based constructions have often been implemented in naïve ways that disregard important elements of the fundamental tabu search proposals. We will compare our tabu search construction with a memory-less design and with previous algorithms recently developed for this problem. The constructive method can be coupled with a local search procedure or a short-term tabu search for improved outcomes. Extensive computational experiments with medium and large instances show that the proposed procedure outperforms the best heuristics reported in the literature within short computational times.  相似文献

The capacitated single assignment hub location problem with modular link capacities is a variant of the classical hub location problem in which the cost of using edges is not linear but stepwise, and the hubs are restricted in terms of transit capacity rather than in the incoming traffic. We propose a metaheuristic algorithm based on strategic oscillation, a methodology originally introduced in the context of tabu search. Our method incorporates several designs for constructive and destructive algorithms, together with associated local search procedures, to balance diversification and intensification for an efficient search. Computational results on a large set of instances show that, in contrast to exact methods that can only solve small instances optimally, our metaheuristic is able to find high-quality solutions on larger instances in short computing times. In addition, the new method, which joins tabu search strategies with strategic oscillation, outperforms the previous tabu search implementation.  相似文献

The classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) involves determining a fleet of homogeneous size vehicles and designing an associated set of routes that minimizes the total cost. Our tabu search (TS) algorithm to solve the VRP is based on reactive tabu search (RTS) with a new escape mechanism, which manipulates different neighbourhood schemes in a very sophisticated way in order to get a balanced intensification and diversification continuously during the search process. We compare our algorithm with the best methods in the literature using different data sets and report results including new best known solutions for several well-known benchmark problems.  相似文献

This paper presents a parallel tabu search algorithm that utilizes several different neighborhood structures for solving the capacitated vehicle routing problem. Single neighborhood or neighborhood combinations are encapsulated in tabu search threads and they cooperate through a solution pool for the purpose of exploiting their joint power. The computational experiments on 32 large scale benchmark instances show that the proposed method is highly effective and competitive, providing new best solutions to four instances while the average deviation of all best solutions found from the collective best results reported in the literature is about 0.22%. We are also able to associate the beneficial use of special neighborhoods with some test instance characteristics and uncover some sources of the collective power of multi-neighborhood cooperation.  相似文献

This paper deals with a recently introduced routing problem variant called the undirected capacitated arc routing problem with profits (UCARPP). The UCARPP model considered in the present study is primarily aimed at generating the route set which maximizes the profit collected from a set of potential customers, represented by edges of the examined transportation network. The secondary objective is to minimize the total route travel time. The generated routes are subject both to capacity and travel time constraints. To tackle the examined problem, we propose a local search metaheuristic development which explores two solution neighborhood structures. The conducted search is effectively diversified by means of the promises concept which is based on the aspiration criteria used in tabu search approaches. The proposed algorithm was tested on UCARPP benchmark instances taken from the literature. It efficiently produced high-quality results, improving several previously best known solutions.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an approach for finding a minimum cost partition of the nodes of a directed acyclic graph into subsets of a given size, subject to the constraint that the precedence relationships among the elements are satisfied, based on the concept of simulated annealing. Simulated annealing is generally applicable, and can be used to obtain solutions arbitrarily close to an optimum. However, the standard simulated annealing approach with a conventional neighbourhood structure does not yield good solutions for this problem, since this is a multiple partitioning problem and the number of subsets is not fixed. For this problem, we develop an effective neighbourhood structure and a new acceptance criterion. We also assess the effectiveness of the developed algorithm. The results show that this proposed algorithm outperforms, in terms of solution quality, any other algorithm using tabu search. The computational time of the procedure is proportional to the number of nodes in the graph.  相似文献

In this paper, a tabu search heuristic is combined with slope scaling to solve a discrete depot location problem, known as the multicommodity location problem with balancing requirements. Although the uncapacitated version of this problem has already been addressed in the literature, this is not the case for the more challenging capacitated version, where each depot has a fixed and finite capacity. The slope scaling approach is used during the initialization phase to provide the tabu search with good starting solutions. Numerical results are reported on various types of large-scale randomly generated instances. The quality of the heuristic is assessed by comparing the solutions obtained with those of a commercial mixed-integer programming code.  相似文献

The Mix Fleet Vehicle Routing Problem (MFVRP) involves the design of a set of minimum cost routes, originating and terminating at a central depot, for a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles with various capacities, fixed costs and variable costs to service a set of customers with known demands. This paper develops new variants of a tabu search meta-heuristic for the MFVRP. These variants use a mix of different components, including reactive tabu search concepts; variable neighbourhoods, special data memory structures and hashing functions. The reactive concept is used in a new way to trigger the switch between simple moves for intensification and more complex ones for diversification of the search strategies. The special data structures are newly introduced to efficiently search the various neighbourhood spaces. The combination of data structures and strategic balance between intensification and diversification generates an efficient and robust implementation, which is very competitive with other algorithms in the literature on a set of benchmark instances for which some new best-known solutions are provided.  相似文献

The vehicle routing problem with backhauls is a variant of the classical capacitated vehicle routing problem. The difference is that it contains two distinct sets of customers: those who receive goods from the depot, who are called linehauls, and those who send goods to the depot, who are referred to as backhauls. In this paper, we describe a new deterministic iterated local search algorithm, which is tested using a large number of benchmark problems chosen from the literature. These computational tests have proven that this algorithm competes with the best known algorithms in terms of the quality of the solutions and at the same time, it is simpler and faster.  相似文献

An appropriate tabu search implementation is designed to solve the resource constrained project scheduling problem. This approach uses well defined move strategies and a structured neighbourhood, defines appropriate tabu status and tenure and takes account of objective function approximation to speed up the search process. A sound understanding of the problem has helped in many ways in designing and enhancing the tabu search methodology. The method uses diversification, intensification and handles infeasibility via strategic oscillation.The above methodology is tested on existing problems from the literature and also on parametrically generated problems with encouraging results. For comparison of results, optimal solutions are used in the former and lower bounds obtained by Lagrangian heuristics are used in the latter.  相似文献
