LetX be any compact convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff space andE be a complex Banach space. We denote byA(X, E) the space of all continuous and affineE-valued functions defined onX. In this paper we prove thatX is a Choquet simplex if and only if the dual ofA(X, E) is isometrically isomorphic by a selection map toM m (X, E*), the space ofE*-valued,w*-regular boundary measures onX. This extends and strengthens a result of G. M. Ustinov. To do this we show that for any compact convex setX, each element of the dual ofA(X, E) can be represented by a measure inM m (X, E*) with the same norm, and this representation is unique if and only ifX is a Choquet simplex. We also prove that ifX is metrizable andE is separable then there exists a selection map from the unit ball of the dual ofA(X, E) into the unit ball ofM m (X, E*) which is weak* to weak*-Borel measurable. This work will constitute a portion of the author's Ph.D. Thesis at the University of Illinois.  相似文献

We show that ifE is a non-reflexive Banach lattice, there exists for everyn a dual of finite even order ofE which contins isometicallyl n /l . We show that itE is a Banach lattice which is isometric to the dual of a Banach spaceX, then the order intervals are σ (E, X)-compact. We prove then that under various conditions, a Banach lattice which is a dual as a Banach space, is a dual as a Banach lattice. In particular, this is true when the predual ofE is unique.   相似文献

Given an operator T : XY between Banach spaces, and a Banach lattice E consisting of measurable functions, we consider the point-wise extension of the operator to the vector-valued Banach lattices T E : E(X) → E(Y) given by T E (f)(ω) = T(f(ω)). It is proved that for any Banach lattice E which does not contain c 0, the operator T is an isomorphism on a subspace isomorphic to c 0 if and only if so is T E . An analogous result for invertible operators on subspaces isomorphic to 1 is also given.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to study the existence of fixed points for nonexpansive multivalued mappings in a particular class of Banach spaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate a relationship between the weakly convergent sequence coefficient WCS(X) and the Jordan–von Neumann constant CNJ(X) of a Banach space X. Using this fact, we prove that if CNJ(X) is less than an appropriate positive number, then every multivalued nonexpansive mapping has a fixed point where E is a nonempty weakly compact convex subset of a Banach space X, and KC(E) is the class of all nonempty compact convex subsets of E.  相似文献

In this paper we study C0-semigroups on X × Lp( − h, 0; X) associated with linear differential equations with delay, where X is a Banach space. In the case that X is a Banach lattice with order continuous norm, we describe the associated modulus semigroup, under minimal assumptions on the delay operator. Moreover, we present a new class of delay operators for which the delay equation is well-posed for p in a subinterval of [1,∞). Dedicated to the memory of H. H. Schaefer  相似文献

It is proved that for a zero-dimensional space X, the function space C p (X, 2) has a Vietoris continuous selection for its hyperspace of at most 2-point sets if and only if X is separable. This provides the complete affirmative solution to a question posed by Tamariz-Mascarúa. It is also obtained that for a strongly zero-dimensional metrizable space E, the function space C p (X, E) is weakly orderable if and only if its hyperspace of at most 2-point sets has a Vietoris continuous selection. This provides a partial positive answer to a question posed by van Mill and Wattel.  相似文献

We prove that every 2-summing operator from a Banach space X into an L 1-space is nuclear if and only if X is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Then we study the class of Banach spaces X for which Π2(l 2, X) = N 1(l 2, X).  相似文献

The goal of this article is to study the relations among monotonicity properties of real Banach lattices and the corresponding convexity properties in the complex Banach lattices. We introduce the moduli of monotonicity of Banach lattices. We show that a Banach lattice E is uniformly monotone if and only if its complexification EC is uniformly complex convex. We also prove that a uniformly monotone Banach lattice has finite cotype. In particular, we show that a Banach lattice is of cotype q for some 2?q<∞ if and only if there is an equivalent lattice norm under which it is uniformly monotone and its complexification is q-uniformly PL-convex. We also show that a real Köthe function space E is strictly (respectively uniformly) monotone and a complex Banach space X is strictly (respectively uniformly) complex convex if and only if Köthe-Bochner function space E(X) is strictly (respectively uniformly) complex convex.  相似文献

Let X be a Banach space and E be a closed bounded subset of X. For x ? X, we define D(x, E) = sup{‖ x ? e‖:e ? E}. The set E is said to be remotal (in X) if, for every x ? X, there exists e ? E such that D(x, E) = ‖x ? e‖. The object of this paper is to characterize those reflexive Banach spaces in which every closed bounded convex set is remotal. Such a result enabled us to produce a convex closed and bounded set in a uniformly convex Banach space that is not remotal. Further, we characterize Banach spaces in which every bounded closed set is remotal.  相似文献

It is proved that C(K,E) (the space of all continuous functions on a Hausdorff compact space K taking values in a Banach space E) admits an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm if C(K) and E do so. Moreover, if the equivalent LUR norms on C(K) and E are lower semicontinuous with respect to some weak topologies, the LUR norm on C(K,E) can be chosen to be lower semicontinuous with respect to an appropriate weak topology. As a consequence we prove that if X and Y are two Hausdorff compacta and C(X), C(Y) admit equivalent (pointwise lower semicontinuous) LUR norms, then so does C(X×Y).  相似文献

A version of Grothendieck’s inequality says that any bounded linear operator acting from a Banach lattice X to a Banach lattice Y acts from X(ℓ2) to Y (ℓ2) as well. A similar statement is proved for Hardy-type subspaces in lattices of measurable functions. Namely, let X be a Banach lattice of measurable functions on the circle, and let an operator T act from the corresponding subspace of analytic functions XA to a Banach lattice Y or, if Y is also a lattice of measurable functions on the circle, to the quotient space Y/YA. Under certain mild conditions on the lattices involved, it is proved that T induces an operator acting from XA(ℓ2) to Y (ℓ2) or to Y/YA(ℓ2), respectively. Abstract

For a completely regular space X and a normed space E let Ck (x, E) (resp., Cp (x, E)) be the set of all E-valued continuous maps on X endowed with the compact-open (resp., pointwise convergence) topology. It is shown that the set of all F-valued linear continuous maps on Ck (x, E) when equipped with the topology of uniform convergence on the members of some families of bounded subsets of Ck (x, E) is a complete uniform space if F is a Band space and X is Dieudonné complete. This result is applied to prove that Dieudonné completeness is preserved by linear quotient surjections from Ck (x, E) onto Ck (Y, E) (resp., from Cp (x, E) onto Cp (x, E)) provided E, F are Band spaces and Y is a k-space.  相似文献

We characterize those Banach spaces X for which K(Xp X) is an M-ideal in L(Xp X) by means of a variant of the compact metric approximation property. As a consequence we obtain that such a space X must be hereditarily lp-rich.  相似文献

A Banach space X will be called extensible if every operator EX from a subspace EX can be extended to an operator XX. Denote by dens X. The smallest cardinal of a subset of X whose linear span is dense in X, the space X will be called automorphic when for every subspace EX every into isomorphism T: EX for which dens X/E = dens X/TE can be extended to an automorphism XX. Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal proved that c 0 is automorphic and conjectured that c 0 and ℓ2 are the only separable automorphic spaces. Moreover, they ask about the extensible or automorphic character of c 0(Γ), for Γ uncountable. That c 0(Γ) is extensible was proved by Johnson and Zippin, and we prove here that it is automorphic and that, moreover, every automorphic space is extensible while the converse fails. We then study the local structure of extensible spaces, showing in particular that an infinite dimensional extensible space cannot contain uniformly complemented copies of ℓ n p , 1 ≤ p < ∞, p ≠ 2. We derive that infinite dimensional spaces such as L p (μ), p ≠ 2, C(K) spaces not isomorphic to c 0 for K metric compact, subspaces of c 0 which are not isomorphic to c 0, the Gurarij space, Tsirelson spaces or the Argyros-Deliyanni HI space cannot be automorphic. Let E be a Banach lattice. Its ideal center Z(E) is embedded naturally in the ideal center Z(E′) of its dual. The embedding may be extended to a contractive algebra and lattice homomorphism of Z(E)ʺ into Z(E′). We show that the extension is onto Z(E′) if and only if E has a topologically full center. (That is, for each x ? E{x\in E}, the closure of Z(E)x is the closed ideal generated by x.) The result can be generalized to the ideal center of the order dual of an Archimedean Riesz space and in a modified form to the orthomorphisms on the order dual of an Archimedean Riesz space.  相似文献

Let X and Y be compact Hausdorff spaces, and let E be a Banach lattice. In this short note, we show that if there exists a Riesz isomorphismΦ:C(X, E)C(Y, R) such that Φ(f) has no zeros if f has none, then X is homeomorphic to Y and E is Riesz isomorphic to R. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

It is known that if a rearrangement invariant function space E on [0,1] has an unconditional basis then each linear continuous operator on E is a sum of two narrow operators. On the other hand, the sum of two narrow operators in L1 is narrow. To find a general approach to these results, we extend the notion of a narrow operator to the case when the domain space is a vector lattice. Our main result asserts that the set Nr(E, F) of all narrow regular operators is a band in the vector lattice Lr(E, F) of all regular operators from a non-atomic order continuous Banach lattice E to an order continuous Banach lattice F. The band generated by the disjointness preserving operators is the orthogonal complement to Nr(E, F) in Lr(E, F). As a consequence we obtain the following generalization of the Kalton-Rosenthal theorem: every regular operator T : EF from a non-atomic Banach lattice E to an order continuous Banach lattice F has a unique representation as T = TDTN where TD is a sum of an order absolutely summable family of disjointness preserving operators and TN is narrow. On the complemented subspaces problem   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
A Banach space is isomorphic to a Hilbert space provided every closed subspace is complemented. A conditionally σ-complete Banach lattice is isomorphic to anL p -space (1≤p<∞) or toc 0(Γ) if every closed sublattice is complemented.  相似文献

The object of this paper is to prove the following theorem: Let Y be a closed subspace of the Banach space X, (S,Σ,μ) a σ-finite measure space, L(S,Y) (respectively, L(S, X)) the space of all strongly measurable functions from S to Y (respectively, X), and p a positive number. Then L(S,Y) is pointwise proximinal in L(S,X) if and only if Lp(μ,Y) is proximinal in Lp(μ,X). As an application of the theorem stated above, we prove that if Y is a separable closed subspace of the Banach space X, p is a positive number, then Lp(μ,Y) is proximinal in Lp(μ,X) if and only if Y is proximinal in X. Finally, several other interesting results on pointwise best approximation are also obtained.  相似文献

We formulate a general theory of positions for subspaces of a Banach space: we define equivalent and isomorphic positions, study the automorphy index a(Y,X) that measures how many non-equivalent positions Y admits in X, and obtain estimates of a(Y,X) for X a classical Banach space such as ?p,Lp,L1,C(ωω) or C[0,1]. Then, we study different aspects of the automorphic space problem posed by Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal; namely, does there exist a separable automorphic space different from c0 or ?2? Recall that a Banach space X is said to be automorphic if every subspace Y admits only one position in X; i.e., a(Y,X)=1 for every subspace Y of X. We study the notion of extensible space and uniformly finitely extensible space (UFO), which are relevant since every automorphic space is extensible and every extensible space is UFO. We obtain a dichotomy theorem: Every UFO must be either an L-space or a weak type 2 near-Hilbert space with the Maurey projection property. We show that a Banach space all of whose subspaces are UFO (called hereditarily UFO spaces) must be asymptotically Hilbertian; while a Banach space for which both X and X are UFO must be weak Hilbert. We then refine the dichotomy theorem for Banach spaces with some additional structure. In particular, we show that an UFO with unconditional basis must be either c0 or a superreflexive weak type 2 space; that a hereditarily UFO Köthe function space must be Hilbert; and that a rearrangement invariant space UFO must be either L or a superreflexive type 2 Banach lattice.  相似文献
