Selectively deuterated poly(arylene ether sulfones) were prepared for neutron scattering studies and for deuterium NMR investigations. The availability of these model macromolecules permits molecular-level identification of the motions responsible for the low temperature relaxations that have been observed in the dynamic mechanical spectra of these engineering polymers. Three labeled sites on the appropriate monomers (bisphenol-A and 4,4′-dichlorodiphenylsulfone) were prepared from deuterated intermediates and characterized via chromatographic, spectroscopic, and thermal analysis. The deuterium exhcange between methyl and aromatic sites that occurred during synthesis was quantified. These labeled monomers were mixed with hydrogenous monomers to synthesize high molecular weight, selectively deuterated poly(arylene ether sulfones). A synthetic technique involving N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/potassium carbonate was employed to afford high molecular weight polymers. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR, proton, carbon, and deuterium NMR, intrinsic viscosities, and thermal analysis. Molecular weights of the labeled polymers were similar to unlabeled systems.  相似文献

Polymer blends of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) were prepared by solution casting. The investigation on water uptake, methanol uptake, permeability and proton conductivity has been conducted. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame of PES/SPEEK blend was obtained from the results of cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) solid state 13C NMR. SPEEK blended with PES resulted in increasing , indicating the molecular motion of polymer chain was reduced. The glass transition temperature of the PES/SPEEK blend membranes were predicted by the Kwei equation. PES plays an important role in the decreasing water uptake, methanol uptake and methanol permeability while enhancing the thermal stability of the blend membrane, which shows the feasibility for direct methanol fuel cell.  相似文献

Highly charged cation permeable composite membranes were prepared by blending of sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) with sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) in 0 to 90% weight ratio, to adjust the hydrophobic properties and ion selective nature. Extent of sulfonation was confirmed by 1H NMR and ion exchange capacity and degree of sulfonation depending on blending composition. These membranes were characterized as a function of weight fraction of SPEEK by recording ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, thermogravimetric analysis, membrane conductivity and membrane potential in equilibration with different electrolytic solutions. Membrane permselectivity and solute flux were estimated using these data on the basis of non-equilibrium thermodynamic principles and for observing the selectivity of different membranes for mono- or bivalent counter-ions. It was observed that relative selectivity for monovalent in comparison to bivalent counter-ions were increased with the decrease in SPEEK content in the composite membrane matrix. The range of SPEEK content in the blend from 60 to 80% appears the most suitable for the selective separation of monovalent ions from bivalent ions. Furthermore, highly charged nature and stabilities of these membranes extend their applications for the electro-assisted separations of similarly charged ions as well as other electro-membrane processes.  相似文献

As a novel class of proton exchange membrane materials for use in fuel cells, sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEKs) were prepared by the modification of poly(phthalazinone ether ketone). Sulfonation reactions were conducted at room temperature with mixtures of 95–98% concentrated sulfuric acid and 27–33% fuming sulfuric acid with different acid ratios, and SPPEK was obtained with a degree of sulfonation (DS) in the desired range of 0.6–1.2. The presence of sulfonic acid groups in SPPEK was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared analysis, and the DS and structures were characterized by NMR. The introduction of sulfonic groups into the polymer chains increased the glass‐transition temperature above the decomposition temperature and also led to an overall decrease in the decomposition temperature. Membrane films were cast from SPPEK solutions in N,N‐dimethylacetamide. Water uptakes and swelling ratios of SPPEK membrane films increased with DS, and SPPEKs with DS > 1.23 were water‐soluble at 80 °C. Proton conductivity increased with DS and temperature up to 95 °C, reaching 10?2S/cm. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 497–507, 2003  相似文献

A series of new poly(ether imide)s containing the naphthalimide moiety were prepared from bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)naphthalimides and several bisphenols by aromatic nucleophilic displacement polymerization. These polyimides had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.31–1.04 dL/g in chloroform and glass transition temperatures of 283.0–341.6°C by differential scanning calorimetry. The onset temperature for 5% weight loss for all the polymers was over 448°C, as assessed by thermogravimetry at a heating rate 10°C/min in nitrogen. In addition, these novel polyimides exhibited good solubility in organic solvents including N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and chloroform. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new sulfonated monomer suitable for polyarylether synthesis was made. 1,1'‐(p‐Phenylenedioxy)bis[4‐(4‐fluorobenzoyl)]benzene was prepared from phosphorus pentoxide/methanesulfonic acid (PPMA), 1,4‐diphenoxybenzene, and p‐fluorobenzoic acid in good yield. This compound was selectively monosulfonated on the most activated ring with fuming sulfuric acid and isolated as the sodium salt. Poly(aryl ethers) made from this monomer may find use as proton exchange membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random and multiblock sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s (SPEs) containing various azole groups such as oxadiazole and triazole were synthesized and characterized for fuel cell application. Successful preparation of SPE membranes depended on the structure of azole groups, which affected solubility of precursors and the resulting SPEs. Although oxadiazole groups were incorporated into hydrophobic component, they were found to be hydrophilic to give higher proton conductivity. Introduction of oxadiazole groups into random SPE gave comparable proton conductivity to that of Nafion NRE at >60% relative humidity at 80 °C. Block copolymer structure further increased the proton diffusion coefficient without increasing ion exchange capacity. Hydrolytic and oxidative stability of the SPE membranes was affected by both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components. Oxadiazole groups gave negative impact on hydrolytic and mechanical stability to the SPE membranes. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Soluble phenol formaldehyde resin containing hydroxymethyl groups has been used to modify sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). Modification has been carried out with films containing both the polymers and using dimethyl formamide (DMF) as casting solvent at various temperatures under reduced pressure. Associated solvent and the hydrogen‐bonded by‐product dimethyl amine (DMA) were removed through mild alkali–acid–water treatment. Cured and treated films show good and consistent mechanical properties, water uptake (22–25%), ion‐exchange capacity (1.1–1.5 meq/g) and proton conductivity (125–150 mS/cm) at 30°C and hold promise for application in fuel cells, as indicated by a polarization study in a fuel cell test station. The solubility parameter of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was investigated. SPEEK exhibited two solubility parameters, 26.4 and 35.7 J1/2 cm?3/2, and was similar in that respect to Nafion, which has two cohesive energy densities. The theoretical solubility parameter of SPEEK, 26.1 J1/2 cm?3/2, was determined with van Krevelen's method and corresponded to the experimental value. The theoretical volume fraction of SPEEK in the solvent was determined with Flory's equation. The trend of the theoretical volume fraction of SPEEK fit quite well with the experimental results when the solubility parameter of the solvent was lower than 35 J1/2 cm?3/2. A significant deviation of the experimental volume fraction of SPEEK with the high solubility parameter resulted from the presence of sulfonic acid groups. SPEEK in the sodium form exhibited similar solvent absorption in comparison with SPEEK in the acid form. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 3128–3134, 2006  相似文献

Poly(arylene ether imidazole)s were prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of a bisphenol imidazole with activated aromatic dihalides. The polymers had glass transition temperatures ranging from 230 to 318°C and number-average molecular weights as high as 82,000 g/mol. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a 5% weight loss occurring ~ 400°C in air and ~ 500°C in nitrogen. Typical neat resin mechanical properties obtained at room temperature included tensile strength and tensile modulus of 14.2 and 407 ksi and fracture energy (Glc) of 23 in. lb/in.2 Titanium-to-titanium tensile shear strengths measured at 23 and 200°C were 4800 and 3000 psi, respectively. In addition, preliminary data were obtained on carbon fiber laminates. The chemistry, physical, and mechanical properties of these polymers are discussed.  相似文献

To improve the proton conductivity of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)s (SPEEK) with low sulfonated degrees, a series of block SPEEK copolymers were prepared by a two-stage one pot process: first the hydrophobic block was prepared with the desired length, then the monomers for the hydrophilic block were added to the first reactive flask to form block copolymers. Membranes were cast from their DMF solutions, and characterized by determining the ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, proton conductivity and mechanical properties. Block-3 with the longer hydrophobic chain shows enhanced performance than the random one in usage for PEM. SAXS was employed to investigate the microstructure effects on the above properties. Larger ionic cluster size and larger proton transport channel in block-3 SPEEK membranes are detected from the result of SAXS. It is believed that this microstructure feature attributes to the enhanced proton conductivity values of block-3 membrane at low IEC.  相似文献

A series of sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether phosphine oxide)s (sPPEPO) were prepared via aromatic nucleophilic substitution polycondensation of 4‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl) phthalazinone (HPPZ) with sulfonated bis(4‐fluorophenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide (sBFPPO) and bis(4‐fluorophenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide (BFPPO) at various ratios. The properties such as molecular weight, ion exchange capacity (IEC), swelling, thermal stability, proton conductivity, and morphology were investigated. sPPEPO with high IEC exhibited high proton conductivity while they still showed low swelling. Typically, sPPEPO with IEC of 1.54 and 1.69 meq/g exhibited high conductivity of 0.091 and 0.19 S/cm, and low swelling ratios of 14.3% and 19.5% at 80 °C, respectively. The low swelling was attributed to the strong intermolecular interaction including the electrostatic force and hydrogen bond. sPPEPO would be promising candidates used as polyelectrolyte membranes for fuel cells. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solid proton conductor, phosphatoantimonic acid, HSbP2O8 · H2O was prepared by ion exchange of the corresponding potassium salt. The composite membranes of SPEEK with up to 40 wt% of HSbP2O8 · H2O were prepared by introducing the solid proton conductor from the aqueous suspension. The composite membranes were characterized using FT-IR, powder X-ray diffraction, SEM, DSC/TGA. Thermal stability of the composite membranes was slightly lower than that of SPEEK. The composite membranes had higher water uptake when compared with SPEEK and the membranes exhibited controlled swelling up to 50 °C. The proton conductivity of the membranes was measured under 100% relative humidity up to 70 °C. The composite membranes showed enhanced proton conductivity up to 20 wt% of HSbP2O8 · H2O and the conductivity was reduced with further increase of HSbP2O8 · H2O loading. A maximum of four-fold increase in proton conductivity at 70 °C was observed for the composite membrane with 20 wt% of solid proton conductor.  相似文献

A new type of nanofiltration membrane is reported based on coating a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) layer on top of a polyethersulfone support. The membranes were characterized by dextran mixtures, salt solutions as well as negatively charged dyes. The SPEEK coated nanofiltration membranes showed molecular weight cutoff for dextran in the range of ultrafiltration, however, rather high rejection for sodium sulfate; retention for salts in the order of RNa2SO4>RNaCl>RMgCl2RNa2SO4>RNaCl>RMgCl2; in addition, the membranes showed a 97–100% retention to the organic dyes. The rejection rates were improved by an increase in the coating thickness and the polymer concentration in the coating solution at the penalty of permeability decrease. Furthermore, it was found that pore penetration of SPEEK into the support membrane effectively constrained the swelling rate of SPEEK and increased the retention. The Donnan–Steric Pore Model was used to describe the transport properties of the membrane. Modeling identified a very tortuous passage within the active separation layer.  相似文献

Novel ionomers based on polybenzimidazole block sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) show excellent thermal properties. The ionic aggregation of sulfonic acid groups leads to well-developed phase separated morphology and thus high proton conductivity at wide humidity range, up to 65 mS cm(-1) at 90% relative humidity.  相似文献

A new series of sulfonated poly(benzoxazole ether ketone)s (SPAEKBO-X) were prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic polycondensation of 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphenol with 2,2′-bis[2-(4-fluorophenyl)benzoxazol-6-yl]hexafluoropropane and sodium 5,5′-carbonylbis-2-fluorobenzenesulfonate in various ratios. Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR were used to characterize the structures and sulfonic acid contents of the copolymers. The copolymers were soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and N,N-dimethylformamide and could form tough and flexible membranes. The protonated membranes were thermally stable up to 320 °C in air. The water uptake, hydrolytic and oxidative stability, and mechanical properties were evaluated. At 30–90 °C and 95% relative humidity, the proton conductivities of the membranes increased with the sulfonic acid content and temperature and almost reached that of Nafion 112. At 90–130 °C, without external humidification, the conductivities increased with the temperature and benzoxazole content and reached above 10−2 S/cm. The SPAEKBO-X membranes, especially those with high benzoxazole compositions, possessed a large amount of strongly bound water (>50%). The experimental results indicate that SPAEKBO-X copolymers are promising for proton-exchange membranes in fuel cells, and their properties might be tailored by the adjustment of the copolymer composition for low temperatures and high humidity or for high temperatures and low humidity; they are especially promising for high-temperature applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
