Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles with spherical, rod-shaped or fiber-shaped morphologies were synthesized by wet chemical method in aqueous media. Scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, helium pycnometry, and aqueous electrophoresis techniques were used to characterize the nanoparticles in terms of their particle size and morphology, density and zeta potential, respectively. Stable "Pickering-type" emulsions were prepared using the HAp nanoparticles as a particulate emulsifier and methyl myristate as an oil phase above pH 7.7, but not below pH 6.1. These emulsions were characterized in terms of their emulsion type, mean droplet diameter and morphology using electrical conductivity, light diffraction and optical microscopy. Rapid demulsification could be induced by lowering the solution pH: addition of acid led to dissolution of the HAp nanoparticles attached on oil-water interface and the emulsion was destabilized. HAp nanoparticles precipitated by addition of base to the aqueous phase after demulsification and the HAp particles precipitated worked as an effective particulate emulsifier. This emulsification-demulsification cycle was reversible. Sintering of methyl myristate-in-water emulsion stabilized with the HAp nanoparticles led to a porous HAp material.  相似文献

Lightly cross-linked poly(4-vinylpyridine)-silica nanocomposite microgel particles have been recently reported to act as pH-responsive particulate emulsifiers [Fujii, S.; Read, E. S.; Armes, S. P.; Binks, B. P. Adv. Mater. 2005, 17, 1014]. In this work, the synthesis and performance of such nanocomposite microgel particles are studied in more detail. Scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, nitrogen microanalyses, thermogravimetric analysis, aqueous electrophoresis, and acid-base titration were used to characterize the nanocomposites in terms of their particle size and morphology, polymer and silica contents, surface compositions, and critical swelling pH, respectively. Depending on the polarity of the oil phase and the purity of the nanocomposite particles, either oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions could be prepared at pH 8-9, but not at pH 2-3. These emulsions were characterized in terms of their emulsion type, mean droplet diameter, and morphology using electrical conductivity, light diffraction, and both electron and optical microscopy. In some cases, rapid demulsification could be induced by lowering the solution pH: addition of acid led to protonation of the 4-vinylpyridine residues, which imparted cationic microgel character to the nanocomposite particles. Cross-linking of the nanocomposite microgel particles is essential for their optimum performance as a pH-responsive emulsifier, but unfortunately it is not sufficient to allow recycling.  相似文献

Submicron-sized polystyrene (PS) microspheres with a relatively narrow particle size distribution can be easily produced through emulsion polymerization induced by γ-ray at room temperature using a new type of amphiphilic cross-linked poly(stearyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) particles as stabilizer. The properties of these amphiphilic particles were described, including morphology, size, ζ potential, and contact angles. The effect of the pH value and the content of amphiphilic particles on the formation and stability of emulsions were also investigated. Meanwhile, the obtained PS microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, through observing the morphology and size of emulsion droplets at different times under an optical microscope, we found it is interesting that Pickering emulsions formed initially disappeared gradually, which is different from the common Pickering emulsions stabilized by inorganic particles. Thus, the mechanism was further discussed.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) latex particles carrying pH-responsive poly[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDEA) hair (PDEA-PS particles) were synthesized by dispersion polymerization and characterized in terms of diameter, diameter distribution, morphology, chemical composition, surface chemistry, and pH-response using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental microanalysis, (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the laser diffraction method, and zeta potential measurements. The hairy particles can act as pH-responsive stabilizers of aqueous foams by adsorption at the air-water surface. Above pH 8.0, where particles have nonprotonated PDEA hair, which is relatively hydrophobic, particle-stabilized foams are stable for at least 1 month. Optical microscopy and SEM confirmed that flocculated PDEA-PS latex particles were adsorbed at the air-water interface and stabilized the aqueous foams. At pH 6.1 and 7.1, relatively stable foams can be prepared that remain stable for at least 24 h. SEM studies indicated that the PDEA-PS particles were adsorbed at the air-water interface as a monolayer at pH 6.1. At pH 5.1 and 3.1, where the particles have cationic water-soluble PDEA hairs with hydrophilic character, no foam was formed. Rapid defoamation can be induced by lowering the solution pH; the addition of acid caused the in situ protonation of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate residues, which impart water-soluble hydrophilic character to the PDEA hair, and the PDEA-PS particles desorbed from the air-water interface. The foaming and defoaming cycles could be repeated at least five times.  相似文献

A submicrometer-scaled polystyrene/melamine-formaldehyde hollow microsphere composite was prepared by self-assembling of sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) latex particles at the interface of emulsion droplets and then being fixed in place using a hard melamine-formaldehyde (MF) composite layer. For control-released purposes, the influential factors that control the size and uniformity of the packed-droplets and the permeability of the composite shell, including the initial particle location, the hydrophilicity and the size of colloidal templates, the oil phase solvent and reserving time of emulsions after the addition of MF prepolymer, were further studied. Relatively uniform sized particle packed-droplets with an average diameter of 10 microm were obtained. The assembled SPS particles kept ordering and minimal conglutination after the preparation of composite microspheres, which allows of controlling the permeability from the interstices between the particles. Porous-mesh-structured MF composite layer was formed to further control the permeability. The morphology of emulsions and composite microspheres were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy.  相似文献

Polystyrene (PS) particles were prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization using graphene oxide (GO) as the stabilizer. The results show that pH is an important factor in the stability of Pickering emulsions. The effects of two different phase initiators, the water phase initiator potassium persulfate and the oil phase initiator azobisisobutyronitrile, on the morphology of PS particles in Pickering emulsion polymerization had been investigated in detail. Wrinkled particles were prepared using the water phase initiator, and spherical particles were prepared using the oil phase initiator. In addition, hexadecane was used as the auxiliary stabilizer in the polymerization, which narrowed the diameter distribution of the PS spheres, and the hollow PS spheres were fabricated. The size of the GO particles also influenced the final morphology of the particles. Nano-sized polymer particles were grafted onto the surface of micro-sized GO. Small GO particles were suitable for Pickering emulsion polymerization to prepare the composite particles. The thermogravimetric analysis of the prepared particles confirmed that they were PS/GO composite particles, which could have a wide range of potential applications, such as in catalysts, sensors, environmental remediation, and energy storage.  相似文献

Submicrometer-sized pH-responsive sterically stabilized polystyrene (PS) latex particles were synthesized by dispersion polymerization in isopropyl alcohol with a poly[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]- (PDEA-) based macroinitiator. These PDEA-PS latexes were extensively characterized with respect to their particle size distribution, morphology, chemical composition, and pH-responsive behavior. Millimeter- and centimeter-sized "liquid marbles" with aqueous volumes varying between 15 μL and 2.0 mL were readily prepared by rolling water droplets on the dried PDEA-PS latex powder. The larger liquid marbles adopted nonspherical shapes due to gravitational forces; analysis of this deformation enabled the surface tension to be estimated. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy studies indicated that flocs of the PDEA-PS particles were adsorbed at the surface of these water droplets, leading to stable liquid marbles. The relative mechanical integrity of the liquid marbles prepared from alkaline aqueous solution (pH 10) was higher than those prepared from acidic aqueous solution (pH 2) as judged by droplet roller experiments. These liquid marbles exhibited long-term stability (over 1 h) when transferred onto the surface of liquid water, provided that the solution pH of the subphase was above pH 8. In contrast, the use of acidic solutions led to immediate disintegration of these liquid marbles within 10 min, with dispersal of the PDEA-PS latex particles in the aqueous solution. Thus the critical minimum solution pH required for long-term liquid marble stability correlates closely with the known pK(a) value of 7.3 for the PDEA stabilizer chains. Stable liquid marbles were also successfully prepared from aqueous Gellan gum solution and glycerol.  相似文献

Exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) sheets with hydrophilic functional groups on the surface were prepared by the oxidation of graphite. Because of the hydrophilic groups on the sheets and the hydrophobic carbon surface, GO sheets were located at the oil-water interface and could be used as a stabilizer in Pickering emulsions. After the Pickering emulsion polymerization of styrene, PS colloidal particles with GO sheets on the surface were prepared. The size of the GO sheets exerts an important influence on the preparation of PS colloidal particles. Small GO sheets located at the liquid-liquid interface and GO-stabilized PS colloidal particles were prepared; however, for large GO sheets, smaller PS colloidal particles prepared on the GO surface were observed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the colloidal particles. TEM, SEM, and XPS results all suggest the successful preparation of GO-stabilized PS colloidal particles.  相似文献

In this research, submicron and carboxyl‐functionalized magnetic latex particles were elaborated by using seeded emulsion polymerization technique in presence of oil‐in‐water (o/w) magnetic emulsion as seed. The polymerization conditions were optimized in order to get well‐defined latex particles with magnetic core and polymer shell bearing carboxylic (–COOH) functionality. Starting from (o/w) magnetic emulsion as seed, synthesis process was performed by copolymerization of styrene (St) monomer with the cross‐linker divinylbenzene (DVB) in presence of 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) as a carboxyl‐bearing initiator. The prepared magnetic latex particles were first characterized in terms of particle size, chemical composition, morphology, magnetic properties, magnetic content, and colloidal stability using various techniques, e.g. particle size analyzer using dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique, Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, thermogravimetric analysis, and zeta potential measurements as a function of pH of the dispersion media, respectively. The prepared magnetic latex particles were then used as second seed for further functionalization with methacrylic acid (MAA) in order to enhance carboxylic groups on the magnetic particle's surface. The results showed that final magnetic latex particles possessed spherical morphology with core‐shell structure and enriched carboxylic acid functionality. More importantly, they exhibited superparamagnetism with high magnetic content (58.42 wt%) and high colloidal stability, which considered as the main requirements for their application in the biomedical diagnostic domains. Polypyrrole-coated polystyrene latex particles bearing reactive N-amino functional groups (PS-PPyNH2) were prepared by the in-situ copolymerization of pyrrole (Py) and the active amino-functionalized pyrrole (PyNH2) in the presence of 1.33 microm-diameter polystyrene (PS) latex particles. These particles were prepared by dispersion polymerization of styrene using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone), PNVP, as a steric stabilizer. The functionalized polypyrrole-coated PS particles (PS-PPyNH2) were characterized in terms of their particle size and surface morphology using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detected pyrrole-NH2 repeat units at the surface of the latex particles, indicating that this monomer had indeed copolymerized with pyrrole. The core-shell structure of the PS-PPyNH2 particles was confirmed by etching the polystyrene core in THF, leading to the formation of hollow conducting polymer capsules. The PS-PPyNH2 particles were then decorated with citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles via electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, etching of the polystyrene core resulted in the formation of gold-decorated PPyNH2 hollow capsules.  相似文献

In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) hybrid emulsions with a weight ratio of 2/1 were prepared by emulsion polymerization using a mixture of styrene (St) and/or butyl acrylate (BA) monomers with WPU dispersion. WPU dispersion was synthesized with isocyanic acid and m-tetramethylxylene diisocyanate (m-TMXDI)-based anionic poly(urethane-urea) dispersions using the prepolymer mixing process. The structures of WPU and hybrids were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The size and morphology of the latex particles were investigated using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The stability of the emulsions was determined according to their shelf life and particle size using the dispersion analyser LUMiSizer® with STEP?-Technology. The thermal and mechanical properties of these films were examined by thermogravimetric analysis and strain-stress curves.  相似文献

Submicron‐scaled cagelike polymer microspheres with hollow core/porous shell were synthesized by self‐assembling of sulfonated polystyrene (PS) latex particles at monomer droplets interface. The swelling of the PS latex particles by the oil phase provided a driving force to develop the hollow core. The latex particles also served as porogen that would disengage automatically during polymerization. Influential factors that control the morphology of the microspheres, including the reserving time of emulsions, polymerization rate, and the Hildebrand solubility parameter and polarity of the oil phase, were studied. A variety of monomers were polymerized into microspheres with hollow core/porous shell structure and microspheres with different diameters and pore sizes were obtained. The polymer microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of a new class of graft polymer surfactants, based on inulin, in emulsion polymerization of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) particles is described. PS and PMMA were synthesized by emulsion polymerization, and stable particles with a high monomer content (50 wt %) were obtained with a very small amount of polymeric surfactant ([surfactant]/[monomer] = 0.0033). The latex dispersions were characterized by dynamic light scattering and by transmission electron microscopy to obtain the average particle size and the polydispersity index, and the stability was determined by turbidimetry measurements and expressed in terms of critical coagulation concentration. The last section gives a comparison of PMMA particles prepared by emulsion polymerization using classical surfactants from different types as emulsifiers with that obtained using the copolymer surfactant. It shows the superiority of INUTEC SP1 as it is the only one that allows stable particles at 20 wt % monomer content, with a smaller ratio [surfactant]/[monomer] = 0.002.  相似文献

The use of magnetic latex particles as solid support in biomedical applications is favourable when homogeneous and well-defined core–shell polymer particles are used. Accordingly, this paper concerns with the synthesis of magnetic poly(styrene–divinylbenzene) latex particles using emulsion polymerization of styrene (St) and divinylbenzene (DVB) monomers in the presence of preformed oil in water organic ferrofluid emulsion droplets as seed. The key parameters which affect on formation and morphology of the prepared magnetic latexes were investigated, including type of magnetic emulsion, St/DVB monomers ratio, DVB amount, type of initiator and surfactant nature. In this study, two different magnetic emulsions were used, low and high octane content magnetic emulsions. The magnetic emulsions were stabilized using different types of surfactants including AP, Triton X 405 and SDS. In addition, four different initiators, including AIBN, V50, ACPA and KPS were examined. The morphology of the prepared magnetic latexes was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. In addition, particle size and size distribution, magnetic content and magnetic properties of the prepared magnetic latexes were also examined, using various techniques, e.g. dynamic light scattering, thermal gravimetric analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. The results showed that the morphology type (Janus like, moon like and/or core–shell) of the prepared magnetic latex particles could be controlled depending mainly on the used formulation. In fact, the use of styrene monomer leads to anisotropic morphology. Whereas, the progressive use of DVB in presence of KPS intiator leads to a well-defined magnetic core and polymer shell structure.

Micrometer-sized, monodisperse polystyrene (PS)/poly[methyl methacrylate-(chloromethyl)styrene] [P(MMA-CMS)] composite particles having hemispherical structure were prepared by solvent evaporation from toluene droplets containing dissolved PS and P(MMA-CMS) dispersed in aqueous solution, which had been prepared using the membrane method. The formation of hemispherical ("Janus") morphology by phase separation between the PS and the P(MMA-CMS) was confirmed by both optical and electron microscopy. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DM) was subsequently carried out in the presence of hemispherical PS/P(MMA-CMS) composite particles in an aqueous dispersed system. After polymerization, the morphology of the particles changed from spherical to "mushroom" shape as observed by scanning electron microscopy, indicating that DM polymerized inside or on the surface of half [P(MMA-CMS) phase] of the particles. 1H NMR spectra were consistent with chloromethyl functional groups in P(MMA-CMS) operating as ATRP initiators in the DM polymerization.  相似文献

Oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions of styrene, as monomer oil in water, were achieved successfully via Pickering emulsification with laponite nanoparticles as the sole inorganic stabilizers. The formed emulsions showed excellent stability not only against droplets coalescence (before polymerization) but also against microparticles coagulation (after polymerization). Generally, the number of composite polystyrene microparticles (PS) increased and their sizes decreased with the content of solid nanoparticles used in stabilizing the precursor o/w emulsions. This is consistent with the formation of rigid layer(s) of the inorganic nanoparticles around the PS microparticles thus a better stability was achieved. The composite microparticles were characterized using various techniques such as surface charge, stability, transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR). Coating films of the prepared latexes were applied to flat glass surfaces and showed reasonable adhesion compared to PS latex particles prepared with conventional surfactants. The effect of employed conditions on the features of the resulting emulsions in terms of stability and particle size has been discussed.  相似文献

Sterically stabilized polystyrene latexes (previously described by Amalvy, J. I.; et al. Chem. Commun. 2003, 1826) were evaluated as pH-responsive particulate emulsifiers for the preparation of both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. The steric stabilizer was a well-defined AB diblock copolymer where A is poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) and B is poly(methyl methacrylate). Several parameters were varied during the emulsion preparation, including the polarity of the oil phase, the latex concentration, surface concentration of copolymer stabilizer, and solution pH. Nonpolar oils such as n-dodecane gave oil-in-water emulsions, and polar oils such as 1-undecanol produced water-in-oil emulsions. In both cases, these emulsions proved to be stimulus-responsive: demulsification occurred rapidly on adjusting the solution pH. Oils of intermediate polarity such as methyl myristate or cineole led to emulsions that underwent transitional inversion on adjusting the solution pH. All emulsions were polydisperse and typically ranged from 40 to 400 microm diameter, as judged by optical microscopy and Malvern Mastersizer measurements. Critical point drying of the emulsion droplets, followed by scanning electron microscopy studies, confirmed that the latex particles were adsorbed as a single monolayer at the oil/water interface, as anticipated.  相似文献

The preparation and characterization of polymer blends with structured natural rubber (NR)-based latex particles are presented. By a semicontinuous emulsion polymerization process, a natural rubber latex (prevulcanized or not) was coated with a shell of crosslinked polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or polystyrene (PS). Furthermore, core–shell latexes based on a natural rubber/crosslinked PS latex semi-interpenetrating network were synthesized in a batch process. These structured particles were incorporated as impact modifiers into a brittle polymer matrix using a Werner & Pfleiderer twin screw extruder. The mechanical properties of PS and PMMA blends with a series of the prepared latexes were investigated. In the case of PMMA blends, relatively simple core (NR)–shell (crosslinked PMMA) particles improved the mechanical properties of PMMA most effectively. An intermediate PS layer between the core and the shell or a natural rubber core with PS subinclusions allowed the E-modulus to be adjusted. The situation was different with the PS blends. Only core–shell particles based on NR-crosslinked PS latex semi-interpenetrating networks could effectively toughen PS. It appears that microdomains in the rubber phase allowed a modification of the crazing behavior. These inclusions were observed inside the NR particles by transmission electron microscopy. Transmission electron photomicrographs of PS and PMMA blends also revealed intact and well-dispersed particles. Scanning electron microscopy of fracture surfaces allowed us to distinguish PS blends reinforced with latex semi-interpenetrating network-based particles from blends with all other types of particles.  相似文献
