The multiscale finite volume (MSFV) method is a computationally efficient numerical method for the solution of elliptic and parabolic problems with heterogeneous coefficients. It has been shown for a wide range of test cases that the MSFV results are in close agreement with those obtained with a classical (computationally expensive) technique. The method, however, fails to give accurate results for highly anisotropic heterogeneous problems due to weak localization assumptions. Recently, a convergent iterative MSFV (i-MSFV) method was developed to enhance the quality of the multiscale results by improving the localization conditions. Although the i-MSFV method proved to be efficient for most practical problems, it is still favorable to improve the localization condition adaptively, i.e. only for a sub-domain where the original MSFV localization conditions are not acceptable, e.g. near shale layers and long coherent structures with high permeability contrasts. In this paper, a space–time adaptive i-MSFV (ai-MSFV) method is introduced. It is shown how to improve the MSFV results adaptively in space and simulation time. The fine-scale smoother, which is necessary for convergence of the i-MSFV method, is also applied locally. Finally, for multiphase flow problems, two criteria are investigated for adaptively updating the MSFV interpolation functions: (1) a criterion based on the total mobility change for the transient coefficients and (2) a criterion based on the pressure equation residual for the accuracy of the results. For various challenging test cases it is demonstrated that iterations in order to obtain accurate results even for highly anisotropic heterogeneous problems are required only in small sub-domains and not everywhere. The findings show that the error introduced in the MSFV framework can be controlled and improved very efficiently with very little additional computational cost compared to the original, non-iterative MSFV method.  相似文献

In the previous multiscale finite-volume (MSFV) method, an efficient and accurate multiscale approach was proposed to solve the elliptic flow equation. The reconstructed fine-scale velocity field was then used to solve the nonlinear hyperbolic transport equation for the fine-scale saturations using an overlapping Schwarz scheme. A coarse-scale system for the transport equations was not derived because of the hyperbolic character of the governing equations and intricate nonlinear interactions between the saturation field and the underlying heterogeneous permeability distribution. In this paper, we describe a sequential implicit multiscale finite-volume framework for coupled flow and transport with general prolongation and restriction operations for both pressure and saturation, in which three adaptive prolongation operators for the saturation are used. In regions with rapid pressure and saturation changes, the original approach, with full reconstruction of the velocity field and overlapping Schwarz, is used to compute the saturations. In regions where the temporal changes in velocity or saturation can be represented by asymptotic linear approximations, two additional approximate prolongation operators are proposed. The efficiency and accuracy are evaluated for two-phase incompressible flow in two- and three-dimensional domains. The new adaptive algorithm is tested using various models with homogeneous and heterogeneous permeabilities. It is demonstrated that the multiscale results with the adaptive transport calculation are in excellent agreement with the fine-scale solutions. Furthermore, the adaptive multiscale scheme of flow and transport is much more computationally efficient compared with the previous MSFV method and conventional fine-scale reservoir simulation methods.  相似文献

An iterative multiscale finite volume (i-MSFV) method is devised for the simulation of multiphase flow in fractured porous media in the context of a hierarchical fracture modeling framework. Motivated by the small pressure change inside highly conductive fractures, the fully coupled system is split into smaller systems, which are then sequentially solved. This splitting technique results in only one additional degree of freedom for each connected fracture network appearing in the matrix system. It can be interpreted as an agglomeration of highly connected cells; similar as in algebraic multigrid methods. For the solution of the resulting algebraic system, an i-MSFV method is introduced. In addition to the local basis and correction functions, which were previously developed in this framework, local fracture functions are introduced to accurately capture the fractures at the coarse scale. In this multiscale approach there exists one fracture function per network and local domain, and in the coarse scale problem there appears only one additional degree of freedom per connected fracture network. Numerical results are presented for validation and verification of this new iterative multiscale approach for fractured porous media, and to investigate its computational efficiency. Finally, it is demonstrated that the new method is an effective multiscale approach for simulations of realistic multiphase flows in fractured heterogeneous porous media.  相似文献

A new finite element method for the efficient discretization of elliptic homogenization problems is proposed. These problems, characterized by data varying over a wide range of scales cannot be easily solved by classical numerical methods that need mesh resolution down to the finest scales and multiscale methods capable of capturing the large scale components of the solution on macroscopic meshes are needed. Recently, the finite element heterogeneous multiscale method (FE-HMM) has been proposed for such problems, based on a macroscopic solver with effective data recovered from the solution of micro problems on sampling domains at quadrature points of a macroscopic mesh. Departing from the approach used in the FE-HMM, we show that interpolation techniques based on the reduced basis methodology (an offline-online strategy) allow one to design an efficient numerical method relying only on a small number of accurately computed micro solutions. This new method, called the reduced basis finite element heterogeneous multiscale method (RB-FE-HMM) is significantly more efficient than the FE-HMM for high order macroscopic discretizations and for three-dimensional problems, when the repeated computation of micro problems over the whole computational domain is expensive. A priori error estimates of the RB-FE-HMM are derived. Numerical computations for two and three dimensional problems illustrate the applicability and efficiency of the numerical method.  相似文献

The multiscale finite volume (MsFV) method has been developed to efficiently solve large heterogeneous problems (elliptic or parabolic); it is usually employed for pressure equations and delivers conservative flux fields to be used in transport problems. The method essentially relies on the hypothesis that the (fine-scale) problem can be reasonably described by a set of local solutions coupled by a conservative global (coarse-scale) problem. In most cases, the boundary conditions assigned for the local problems are satisfactory and the approximate conservative fluxes provided by the method are accurate. In numerically challenging cases, however, a more accurate localization is required to obtain a good approximation of the fine-scale solution. In this paper we develop a procedure to iteratively improve the boundary conditions of the local problems. The algorithm relies on the data structure of the MsFV method and employs a Krylov-subspace projection method to obtain an unconditionally stable scheme and accelerate convergence. Two variants are considered: in the first, only the MsFV operator is used; in the second, the MsFV operator is combined in a two-step method with an operator derived from the problem solved to construct the conservative flux field. The resulting iterative MsFV algorithms allow arbitrary reduction of the solution error without compromising the construction of a conservative flux field, which is guaranteed at any iteration. Since it converges to the exact solution, the method can be regarded as a linear solver. In this context, the schemes proposed here can be viewed as preconditioned versions of the Generalized Minimal Residual method (GMRES), with a very peculiar characteristic that the residual on the coarse grid is zero at any iteration (thus conservative fluxes can be obtained).  相似文献

In this paper, an extension of the multi-scale finite-volume (MSFV) method is devised, which allows to simulate flow and transport in reservoirs with complex well configurations. The new framework fits nicely into the data structure of the original MSFV method and has the important property that large patches covering the whole well are not required. For each well, an additional degree of freedom is introduced. While the treatment of pressure-constraint wells is trivial (the well-bore reference pressure is explicitly specified), additional equations have to be solved to obtain the unknown well-bore pressure of rate-constraint wells. Numerical simulations of test cases with multiple complex wells demonstrate the ability of the new algorithm to capture the interference between the various wells and the reservoir accurately.  相似文献

Numerical approximation of the five-equation two-phase flow of Kapila et al. [A.K. Kapila, R. Menikoff, J.B. Bdzil, S.F. Son, D.S. Stewart, Two-phase modeling of deflagration-to-detonation transition in granular materials: reduced equations, Physics of Fluids 13(10) (2001) 3002–3024] is examined. This model has shown excellent capabilities for the numerical resolution of interfaces separating compressible fluids as well as wave propagation in compressible mixtures [A. Murrone, H. Guillard, A five equation reduced model for compressible two phase flow problems, Journal of Computational Physics 202(2) (2005) 664–698; R. Abgrall, V. Perrier, Asymptotic expansion of a multiscale numerical scheme for compressible multiphase flows, SIAM Journal of Multiscale and Modeling and Simulation (5) (2006) 84–115; F. Petitpas, E. Franquet, R. Saurel, O. Le Metayer, A relaxation-projection method for compressible flows. Part II. The artificial heat exchange for multiphase shocks, Journal of Computational Physics 225(2) (2007) 2214–2248]. However, its numerical approximation poses some serious difficulties. Among them, the non-monotonic behavior of the sound speed causes inaccuracies in wave’s transmission across interfaces. Moreover, volume fraction variation across acoustic waves results in difficulties for the Riemann problem resolution, and in particular for the derivation of approximate solvers. Volume fraction positivity in the presence of shocks or strong expansion waves is another issue resulting in lack of robustness. To circumvent these difficulties, the pressure equilibrium assumption is relaxed and a pressure non-equilibrium model is developed. It results in a single velocity, non-conservative hyperbolic model with two energy equations involving relaxation terms. It fulfills the equation of state and energy conservation on both sides of interfaces and guarantees correct transmission of shocks across them. This formulation considerably simplifies numerical resolution. Following a strategy developed previously for another flow model [R. Saurel, R. Abgrall, A multiphase Godunov method for multifluid and multiphase flows, Journal of Computational Physics 150 (1999) 425–467], the hyperbolic part is first solved without relaxation terms with a simple, fast and robust algorithm, valid for unstructured meshes. Second, stiff relaxation terms are solved with a Newton method that also guarantees positivity and robustness. The algorithm and model are compared to exact solutions of the Euler equations as well as solutions of the five-equation model under extreme flow conditions, for interface computation and cavitating flows involving dynamics appearance of interfaces. In order to deal with correct dynamic of shock waves propagating through multiphase mixtures, the artificial heat exchange method of Petitpas et al. [F. Petitpas, E. Franquet, R. Saurel, O. Le Metayer, A relaxation-projection method for compressible flows. Part II. The artificial heat exchange for multiphase shocks, Journal of Computational Physics 225(2) (2007) 2214–2248] is adapted to the present formulation.  相似文献

We discuss numerical methods for linear and nonlinear transport equations with multiscale velocity fields. These methods are themselves multiscaled in nature in the sense that they use macro and micro grids, multiscale test functions. We demonstrate the efficiency of these methods and apply them to two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media.  相似文献

A computational methodology is developed to efficiently perform uncertainty quantification for fluid transport in porous media in the presence of both stochastic permeability and multiple scales. In order to capture the small scale heterogeneity, a new mixed multiscale finite element method is developed within the framework of the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM) in the spatial domain. This new method ensures both local and global mass conservation. Starting from a specified covariance function, the stochastic log-permeability is discretized in the stochastic space using a truncated Karhunen–Loève expansion with several random variables. Due to the small correlation length of the covariance function, this often results in a high stochastic dimensionality. Therefore, a newly developed adaptive high dimensional stochastic model representation technique (HDMR) is used in the stochastic space. This results in a set of low stochastic dimensional subproblems which are efficiently solved using the adaptive sparse grid collocation method (ASGC). Numerical examples are presented for both deterministic and stochastic permeability to show the accuracy and efficiency of the developed stochastic multiscale method.  相似文献

A front-tracking/ghost-fluid method is introduced for simulations of fluid interfaces in compressible flows. The new method captures fluid interfaces using explicit front-tracking and defines interface conditions with the ghost-fluid method. Several examples of multiphase flow simulations, including a shock–bubble interaction, the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, the collapse of an air bubble in water and the breakup of a water drop in air, using the Euler or the Navier–Stokes equations, are performed in order to demonstrate the accuracy and capability of the new method. The computational results are compared with experiments and earlier computational studies. The results show that the new method can simulate interface dynamics accurately, including the effect of surface tension. Results for compressible gas–water systems show that the new method can be used for simulations of fluid interface with large density differences.  相似文献

The generic structure of solutions of initial value problems of hyperbolic-elliptic systems, also called mixed systems, of conservation laws is not yet fully understood. One reason for the absence of a core well-posedness theory for these equations is the sensitivity of their solutions to the structure of a parabolic regularization when attempting to single out an admissible solution by the vanishing viscosity approach. There is, however, theoretical and numerical evidence for the appearance of solutions that exhibit persistent oscillations, so-called oscillatory waves, which are (in general, measure-valued) solutions that emerge from Riemann data or slightly perturbed constant data chosen from the interior of the elliptic region. To capture these solutions, usually a fine computational grid is required. In this work, a version of the multiresolution method applied to a WENO scheme for systems of conservation laws is proposed as a simulation tool for the efficient computation of solutions of oscillatory wave type. The hyperbolic-elliptic $2 \times 2$ systems of conservation laws considered are a prototype system for three-phase flow in porous media and a system modeling the separation of a heavy-buoyant bidisperse suspension. In the latter case, varying one scalar parameter produces elliptic regions of different shapes and numbers of points of tangency with the borders of the phase space, giving rise to different kinds of oscillation waves.  相似文献

This paper investigates the 2D nanoindentation of a copper thin film using a concurrent multiscale method. The method uses molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in the atomistic region, the strong-form meshless Hermite-Cloud method in the continuum region and a handshaking algorithm to concurrently couple them. A fully atomistic simulation is also carried out to validate the multiscale method. The results, namely the load versus indentation depth graph obtained from the multiscale method shows only slight quantitative variation from that of the full atomistic model. More importantly, the graphs from both simulations show a similar trend thus validating the 2D multiscale method. The displacement profile without discontinuities further supports the efficiency of the multiscale method in ensuring smooth exchange of information between the atomistic and continuum domains. The material properties extracted from the simulation include the force/unit length values obtained by dividing the maximum load on the indenter by its contact perimeter, instead of the hardness value obtained in 3D simulations. By restricting the atomic scale detail to the critical regions beneath the indenter, the multiscale method effectively saves computational resources to more than one order (close to 13 times less for this problem), thus making it feasible to simulate problems of larger dimensions that are not amenable to complete atomistic simulations.  相似文献

We present a finite-volume scheme for compressible Euler flows where the grid is cartesian and it does not fit to the body. The scheme, based on the definition of an ad hoc Riemann problem at solid boundaries, is simple to implement and it is formally second order accurate. Error convergence rates with respect to several exact test cases are investigated and examples of flow solutions in one, two and three dimensions are presented.  相似文献

We apply the multiscale basis functions for the singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem on adaptively graded meshes, which can provide a good balance between the numerical accuracy and computational cost. The multiscale space is built through standard finite element basis functions enriched with multiscale basis functions. The multiscale basis functions have abilities to capture originally perturbed information in the local problem, as a result, our method is capable of reducing the boundary layer errors remarkably on graded meshes, where the layer-adapted meshes are generated by a given parameter. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate that the multiscale method can acquire second order convergence in the L2 norm and first order convergence in the energy norm on graded meshes, which is independent of ε. In contrast with the conventional methods, our method is much more accurate and effective.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the development of a sharp numerical scheme for multiphase electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flows for a high electric Reynolds number regime. The electric potential Poisson equation contains EHD interface boundary conditions, which are implemented using the ghost fluid method (GFM). The GFM is also used to solve the pressure Poisson equation. The methods detailed here are integrated with state-of-the-art interface transport techniques and coupled to a robust, high order fully conservative finite difference Navier–Stokes solver. Test cases with exact or approximate analytic solutions are used to assess the robustness and accuracy of the EHD numerical scheme. The method is then applied to simulate a charged liquid kerosene jet.  相似文献

An adaptive implicit–explicit scheme for Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of compressible turbulent flows on unstructured grids is developed. The method uses a node-based finite-volume discretization with Summation-by-Parts (SBP) property, which, in conjunction with Simultaneous Approximation Terms (SAT) for imposing boundary conditions, leads to a linearly stable semi-discrete scheme. The solution is marched in time using an Implicit–Explicit Runge–Kutta (IMEX-RK) time-advancement scheme. A novel adaptive algorithm for splitting the system into implicit and explicit sets is developed. The method is validated using several canonical laminar and turbulent flows. Load balance for the new scheme is achieved by a dual-constraint, domain decomposition algorithm. The scalability and computational efficiency of the method is investigated, and memory savings compared with a fully implicit method is demonstrated. A notable reduction of computational costs compared to both fully implicit and fully explicit schemes is observed.  相似文献
