An improved penalty immersed boundary (pIB) method has been proposed for simulation of fluid–flexible body interaction problems. In the proposed method, the fluid motion is defined on the Eulerian domain, while the solid motion is described by the Lagrangian variables. To account for the interaction, the flexible body is assumed to be composed of two parts: massive material points and massless material points, which are assumed to be linked closely by a stiff spring with damping. The massive material points are subjected to the elastic force of solid deformation but do not interact with the fluid directly, while the massless material points interact with the fluid by moving with the local fluid velocity. The flow solver and the solid solver are coupled in this framework and are developed separately by different methods. The fractional step method is adopted to solve the incompressible fluid motion on a staggered Cartesian grid, while the finite element method is developed to simulate the solid motion using an unstructured triangular mesh. The interaction force is just the restoring force of the stiff spring with damping, and is spread from the Lagrangian coordinates to the Eulerian grids by a smoothed approximation of the Dirac delta function. In the numerical simulations, we first validate the solid solver by using a vibrating circular ring in vacuum, and a second-order spatial accuracy is observed. Then both two- and three-dimensional simulations of fluid–flexible body interaction are carried out, including a circular disk in a linear shear flow, an elastic circular disk moving through a constricted channel, a spherical capsule in a linear shear flow, and a windsock in a uniform flow. The spatial accuracy is shown to be between first-order and second-order for both the fluid velocities and the solid positions. Comparisons between the numerical results and the theoretical solutions are also presented.  相似文献

A direct forcing immersed boundary framework is presented for the simple and efficient simulation of strongly coupled fluid–structure interactions. The immersed boundary method developed by Yang and Balaras [J. Yang, E. Balaras, An embedded-boundary formulation for large-eddy simulation of turbulent flows interacting with moving boundaries, J. Comput. Phys. 215 (1) (2006) 12–40] is greatly simplified by eliminating several complicated geometric procedures without sacrificing the overall accuracy. The fluid–structure coupling scheme of Yang et al. [J. Yang, S. Preidikman, E. Balaras, A strongly-coupled, embedded-boundary method for fluid–structure interactions of elastically mounted rigid bodies, J. Fluids Struct. 24 (2008) 167–182] is also significantly expedited by moving the fluid solver out of the predictor–corrector iterative loop without altering the strong coupling property. Central to these improvements are the reformulation of the field extension strategy and the evaluation of fluid force and moment exerted on the immersed bodies, by taking advantage of the direct forcing idea in a fractional-step method. Several cases with prescribed motions are examined first to validate the simplified field extension approach. Then, a variety of strongly coupled fluid–structure interaction problems, including vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder, transverse and rotational galloping of rectangular bodies, and fluttering and tumbling of rectangular plates, are computed. The excellent agreement between the present results and the reference data from experiments and other simulations demonstrates the accuracy, simplicity, and efficiency of the new method and its applicability in a wide range of complicated fluid–structure interaction problems.  相似文献

We describe an immersed boundary method for problems of fluid–solute-structure interaction. The numerical scheme employs linearly implicit timestepping, allowing for the stable use of timesteps that are substantially larger than those permitted by an explicit method, and local mesh refinement, making it feasible to resolve the steep gradients associated with the space charge layers as well as the chemical potential, which is used in our formulation to control the permeability of the membrane to the (possibly charged) solute. Low Reynolds number fluid dynamics are described by the time-dependent incompressible Stokes equations, which are solved by a cell-centered approximate projection method. The dynamics of the chemical species are governed by the advection–electrodiffusion equations, and our semi-implicit treatment of these equations results in a linear system which we solve by GMRES preconditioned via a fast adaptive composite-grid (FAC) solver. Numerical examples demonstrate the capabilities of this methodology, as well as its convergence properties.  相似文献

A highly efficient high-order boundary element method is developed for the numerical simulation of nonlinear wave–wave and wave-body interactions in the context of potential flow. The method is based on the framework of the quadratic boundary element method (QBEM) for the boundary integral equation and uses the pre-corrected fast Fourier transform (PFFT) algorithm to accelerate the evaluation of far-field influences of source and/or normal dipole distributions on boundary elements. The resulting PFFT–QBEM reduces the computational effort of solving the associated boundary-value problem from O(N2~3) (with the traditional QBEM) to O(N ln N) where N represents the total number of boundary unknowns. Significantly, it allows for reliable computations of nonlinear hydrodynamics useful in ship design and marine applications, which are forbidden with the traditional methods on the presently available computing platforms. The formulation and numerical issues in the development and implementation of the PFFT–QBEM are described in detail. The characteristics of accuracy and efficiency of the PFFT–QBEM for various boundary-value problems are studied and compared to those of the existing accelerated (lower- and higher-order) boundary element methods. To illustrate the usefulness of the PFFT–QBEM, it is applied to solve the initial boundary-value problem in the generation of three-dimensional nonlinear waves by a moving ship hull. The predicted wave profile and resistance on the ship are compared to available experimental measurements with satisfactory agreements.  相似文献

A systematic approach is presented for constructing higher-order immersed boundary and ghost fluid methods for CFD in general, and fluid–structure interaction problems in particular. Such methods are gaining popularity because they simplify a number of computational issues. These range from gridding the fluid domain, to designing and implementing Eulerian-based algorithms for challenging fluid–structure applications characterized by large structural motions and deformations or topological changes. However, because they typically operate on non body-fitted grids, immersed boundary and ghost fluid methods also complicate other issues such as the treatment of wall boundary conditions in general, and fluid–structure transmission conditions in particular. These methods also tend to be at best first-order space-accurate at the immersed interfaces. In some cases, they are also provably inconsistent at these locations. A methodology is presented in this paper for addressing this issue. It is developed for inviscid flows and prescribed structural motions. For the sake of clarity, but without any loss of generality, this methodology is described in one and two dimensions. However, its extensions to flow-induced structural motions and three dimensions are straightforward. The proposed methodology leads to a departure from the current practice of populating ghost fluid values independently from the chosen spatial discretization scheme. Instead, it accounts for the pattern and properties of a preferred higher-order discretization scheme, and attributes ghost values as to preserve the formal order of spatial accuracy of this scheme. It is illustrated in this paper by its application to various finite difference and finite volume methods. Its impact is also demonstrated by one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments that confirm its theoretically proven ability to preserve higher-order spatial accuracy, including in the vicinity of the immersed interfaces.  相似文献

By using the Onsager principle of minimum energy dissipation, the hydrodynamic boundary conditions at the fluid–solid interface are shown to be the natural emergent behavior of microscopic interactions that lead to the interfacial tension and the tangential friction at the fluid–solid interface [T. Qian, C. Qiu, P. Sheng, J. Fluid Mech. 611 (2008) 333]. This is satisfying because the equations of motion, e.g., the Stokes equation, and the hydrodynamic boundary conditions can now be derived from a unified framework. The resulting continuum hydrodynamic formulation yields predictions for immiscible two-phase flows that are in quantitative agreement with molecular dynamic simulations. In particular, the classical problem of the moving contact line is resolved. We also show results on the moving contact line over chemically patterned surfaces which exhibit striking nanoscale characteristics as well as sub-quadratic dependence of the moving contact line dissipation on its average velocity.  相似文献

In this paper, we present hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the numerical solution of steady and time-dependent nonlinear convection–diffusion equations. The methods are devised by expressing the approximate scalar variable and corresponding flux in terms of an approximate trace of the scalar variable and then explicitly enforcing the jump condition of the numerical fluxes across the element boundary. Applying the Newton–Raphson procedure and the hybridization technique, we obtain a global equation system solely in terms of the approximate trace of the scalar variable at every Newton iteration. The high number of globally coupled degrees of freedom in the discontinuous Galerkin approximation is therefore significantly reduced. We then extend the method to time-dependent problems by approximating the time derivative by means of backward difference formulae. When the time-marching method is (p+1)(p+1)th order accurate and when polynomials of degree p?0p?0 are used to represent the scalar variable, each component of the flux and the approximate trace, we observe that the approximations for the scalar variable and the flux converge with the optimal order of p+1p+1 in the L2L2-norm. Finally, we apply element-by-element postprocessing schemes to obtain new approximations of the flux and the scalar variable. The new approximate flux, which has a continuous interelement normal component, is shown to converge with order p+1p+1 in the L2L2-norm. The new approximate scalar variable is shown to converge with order p+2p+2 in the L2L2-norm. The postprocessing is performed at the element level and is thus much less expensive than the solution procedure. For the time-dependent case, the postprocessing does not need to be applied at each time step but only at the times for which an enhanced solution is required. Extensive numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the present method.  相似文献

We present an implicit high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the steady-state and time-dependent incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The method is devised by using the discontinuous Galerkin discretization for a velocity gradient-pressure–velocity formulation of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with a special choice of the numerical traces. The method possesses several unique features which distinguish itself from other discontinuous Galerkin methods. First, it reduces the globally coupled unknowns to the approximate trace of the velocity and the mean of the pressure on element boundaries, thereby leading to a significant reduction in the degrees of freedom. Moreover, if the augmented Lagrangian method is used to solve the linearized system, the globally coupled unknowns become the approximate trace of the velocity only. Second, it provides, for smooth viscous-dominated problems, approximations of the velocity, pressure, and velocity gradient which converge with the optimal order of k + 1 in the L2-norm, when polynomials of degree k?0 are used for all components of the approximate solution. And third, it displays superconvergence properties that allow us to use the above-mentioned optimal convergence properties to define an element-by-element postprocessing scheme to compute a new and better approximate velocity. Indeed, this new approximation is exactly divergence-free, H (div)-conforming, and converges with order k + 2 for k ? 1 and with order 1 for k = 0 in the L2-norm. Moreover, a novel and systematic way is proposed for imposing boundary conditions for the stress, viscous stress, vorticity and pressure which are not naturally associated with the weak formulation of the method. This can be done on different parts of the boundary and does not result in the degradation of the optimal order of convergence properties of the method. Extensive numerical results are presented to demonstrate the convergence and accuracy properties of the method for a wide range of Reynolds numbers and for various polynomial degrees.  相似文献

A dispersion-relation-preserving dual-compact scheme developed in Cartesian grids is applied together with the immersed boundary method to solve the flow equations in irregular and time-varying domains. The artificial momentum forcing term applied at certain points in cells containing fluid and solid allows an imposition of velocity condition to account for the motion of solid body. We develop in this study a differential-based interpolation scheme which can be easily extended to three-dimensional simulation. The results simulated from the proposed immersed boundary method agree well with other numerical and experimental results for the chosen benchmark problems. The accuracy and fidelity of the IB flow solver developed to predict flows with irregular boundaries are therefore demonstrated.  相似文献

We present a novel dynamic approach for solid–fluid coupling by joining two different numerical methods: the boundary-element method (BEM) and the finite element method (FEM). The FEM results describe the thermomechanical evolution of the solid while the fluid is solved with the BEM. The bidirectional feedback between the two domains evolves along a Lagrangian interface where the FEM domain is embedded inside the BEM domain. The feedback between the two codes is based on the calculation of a specific drag tensor for each boundary on finite element. The approach is presented here to solve the complex problem of the descent of a cold subducting oceanic plate into a hot fluid-like mantle. The coupling technique is shown to maintain the proper energy dissipation caused by the important secondary induced mantle flow induced by the lateral migrating of the subducting plate. We show how the method can be successfully applied for modelling the feedback between deformation of the oceanic plate and the induced mantle flow. We find that the mantle flow drag is singular at the edge of the retreating plate causing a distinct hook shape. In nature, such hooks can be observed at the northern end of the Tonga trench and at the southern perimeter, of the South American trench.  相似文献

This paper is a continuation of earlier work [P. Degond, S. Jin, L. Mieussens, A smooth transition between kinetic and hydrodynamic equations, Journal of Computational Physics 209 (2005) 665–694] in which we presented an automatic domain decomposition method for the solution of gas dynamics problems which require a localized resolution of the kinetic scale. The basic idea is to couple the macroscopic hydrodynamics model and the microscopic kinetic model through a buffer zone in which both equations are solved. Discontinuities or sharp gradients of the solution are responsible for locally strong departures to local equilibrium which require the resolution of the kinetic model. The buffer zone is drawn around the kinetic region by introducing a cut-off function, which takes values between zero and one and which is identically zero in the fluid zone and one in the kinetic zone. In the present paper, we specifically consider the possibility of moving the kinetic region or creating new kinetic regions, by evolving the cut-off function with respect to time. We present algorithms which perform this task by taking into account indicators which characterize the non-equilibrium state of the gas. The method is shown to be highly flexible as it relies on the time evolution of the buffer cut-off function rather than on the geometric definition of a moving interface which requires remeshing, by contrast to many previous methods. Numerical examples are presented which validate the method and demonstrate its performances.  相似文献

The interpolating moving least-squares (IMLS) method is discussed first in this paper. And the formulae of the IMLS method obtained by Lancaster are revised. Then on the basis of the boundary element-free method (BEFM), combining the boundary integral equation (BIE) method with the IMLS method, the improved boundary element-free method (IBEFM) for two-dimensional potential problems is presented, and the corresponding formulae of the IBEFM are obtained. In the BEFM, boundary conditions are applied directly, but the shape function in the MLS does not satisfy the property of the Kronecker δ function. This is a problem of the BEFM, and must be solved theoretically. In the IMLS method, when the shape function satisfies the property of the Kronecker δ function, then the boundary conditions, in the meshless method based on the IMLS method, can be applied directly. Then the IBEFM, based on the IMLS method, is a direct meshless boundary integral equation method in which the basic unknown quantity is the real solution of the nodal variables, and the boundary conditions can be applied directly and easily, thus it gives a greater computational precision. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the method.  相似文献

A numerical method to solve the compressible Navier–Stokes equations around objects of arbitrary shape using Cartesian grids is described. The approach considered here uses an embedded geometry representation of the objects and approximate the governing equations with a low numerical dissipation centered finite-difference discretization. The method is suitable for compressible flows without shocks and can be classified as an immersed interface method. The objects are sharply captured by the Cartesian mesh by appropriately adapting the discretization stencils around the irregular grid nodes, located around the boundary. In contrast with available methods, no jump conditions are used or explicitly derived from the boundary conditions, although a number of elements are adopted from previous immersed interface approaches. A new element in the present approach is the use of the summation-by-parts formalism to develop stable non-stiff first-order derivative approximations at the irregular grid points. Second-order derivative approximations, as those appearing in the transport terms, can be stiff when irregular grid points are located too close to the boundary. This is addressed using a semi-implicit time integration method. Moreover, it is shown that the resulting implicit equations can be solved explicitly in the case of constant transport properties. Convergence studies are performed for a rotating cylinder and vortex shedding behind objects of varying shapes at different Mach and Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

This paper proposes the singular boundary method (SBM) in conjunction with Burton and Miller?s formulation for acoustic radiation and scattering. The SBM is a strong-form collocation boundary discretization technique using the singular fundamental solutions, which is mathematically simple, easy-to-program, meshless and introduces the concept of source intensity factors (SIFs) to eliminate the singularities of the fundamental solutions. Therefore, it avoids singular numerical integrals in the boundary element method (BEM) and circumvents the troublesome placement of the fictitious boundary in the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). In the present method, we derive the SIFs of exterior Helmholtz equation by means of the SIFs of exterior Laplace equation owing to the same order of singularities between the Laplace and Helmholtz fundamental solutions. In conjunction with the Burton–Miller formulation, the SBM enhances the quality of the solution, particularly in the vicinity of the corresponding interior eigenfrequencies. Numerical illustrations demonstrate efficiency and accuracy of the present scheme on some benchmark examples under 2D and 3D unbounded domains in comparison with the analytical solutions, the boundary element solutions and Dirichlet-to-Neumann finite element solutions.  相似文献

We present a simple and efficient fluid–solid coupling method in two and three spatial dimensions. In particular, we consider the numerical approximation of the Navier–Stokes equations on irregular domains and propose a novel approach for solving the Hodge projection step on arbitrary shaped domains. This method is straightforward to implement and leads to a symmetric positive definite linear system for both the projection step and for the implicit treatment of the viscosity. We demonstrate the accuracy of our method in the L1L1 and LL norms and present its removing the errors associated with the conventional rasterization-type discretizations. We apply this method to the simulation of a flow past a cylinder in two spatial dimensions and show that our method can reproduce the known stable and unstable regimes as well as correct lift and drag forces. We also apply this method to the simulation of a flow past a sphere in three spatial dimensions at low and moderate Reynolds number to reproduce the known steady axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric flow regimes. We further apply this algorithm to the coupling of flows with moving rigid bodies.  相似文献

This work extends the application of finite volume method (FVM) to structural–acoustic problems. A three-dimensional time domain FVM (TDFVM) is proposed to predict the transient response and natural characteristics of structural–acoustic coupling systems. Acoustic wave equation in heterogeneous medium and structural dynamic equation are solved in fluid and solid sub-domains respectively. The structural–acoustic coupling is implemented according to normal components of particle acceleration continuity condition and normal traction equilibrium condition at the interface. The computational domain is discretized with four-node tetrahedral grid which is generated easily and has strong adaptability to complicated geometries. Numerical experiments are carried out to examine the accuracy of the method in both time domain and frequency domain. The results show good agreement with analytical solutions and numerical results. For structural–acoustic problem, TDFVM has the capability to consider the heterogeneity of both fluid and solid.  相似文献

In this paper we detail a fast, fully-coupled, partitioned fluid–structure interaction (FSI) scheme. For the incompressible fluid, new fractional-step algorithms are proposed which make possible the fully implicit, but matrix-free, parallel solution of the entire coupled fluid–solid system. These algorithms include artificial compressibility pressure-poisson solution in conjunction with upwind velocity stabilisation, as well as simplified pressure stabilisation for improved computational efficiency. A dual-timestepping approach is proposed where a Jacobi method is employed for the momentum equations while the pressures are concurrently solved via a matrix-free preconditioned GMRES methodology. This enables efficient sub-iteration level coupling between the fluid and solid domains. Parallelisation is effected for distributed-memory systems. The accuracy and efficiency of the developed technology is evaluated by application to benchmark problems from the literature. The new schemes are shown to be efficient and robust, with the developed preconditioned GMRES solver furnishing speed-ups ranging between 50 and 80.  相似文献
