Three polar poly(para-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPE) were synthesized by utilizing the Heck-Sonogashira protocol. Two of the PPEs carry beta-glucopyranose substituents. Depending upon the linker used between the glycol units and the backbone, the fluorescence of these PPEs can be quenched by Hg2+ and Pb2+ to a varying degree. Monomeric model compounds that are substituted with only one glucose unit are not efficiently quenched. The presence of many glucose substituents in one PPE assembly led to a large increase in the binding constant to Hg2+ and quenching of the fluorescence was amplified.  相似文献

A series of nonaggregating carboxylate-functionalized poly(phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) have been synthesized for immobilization via electrostatic adsorption onto Eu3+-polystyrene microspheres with a mean diameter of 0.2 microm. This system is shown to constitute a ratiometric system that measures fluorescence quenching with high fidelity. The fluorescence quenching properties of the polymer-coated particles in response to methyl viologen and a naphthyl-functionalized viologen have been investigated in aqueous solutions to study the influence of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with pentiptycene-incorporated as well as macrocycle-containing polymers.  相似文献

A series of flexible, highly bright fluorescent poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene)s (PPEs) was prepared by employing a disulfide containing nonconjugated monomer at various ratios under Sonogashira reaction conditions. PPEs with flexible linkers exhibited fluorescence properties comparable to those of a fully conjugated PPE when less than 50% of flexible monomers were incorporated into the backbone. To evaluate the self‐assembly properties of PPEs, a series of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) was fabricated by treating PPEs with organic acids followed by dialysis. CPNs containing linkers exhibited different complexation behavior with polysaccharides, warranting further investigation into how flexibility and biodegradability of CPNs influence their cellular interaction and entry. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conformation of single molecules of dialkyl poly para phenylene ethynylenes (PPEs), electro-active polymers, is studied in solutions using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformation of conjugated polymers affects their electro-optical properties and therefore is critical to their current and potential uses, though only limited theoretical knowledge is available regarding the factors that control their configuration. The present study investigates the affects of molecular parameters including molecular weight of the polymer and chemical structure of the side chains of PPEs in different solvents on the conformation of the polymers. The PPEs are modeled atomistically where the solvents are modeled both implicitly and explicitly. The study finds that PPEs assume extended configuration which is affected by the length of the polymer backbone and the nature and length of substituting side chains. While the polymer remains extended, local dynamics is retained and no long range correlations are observed within the backbone. The results are compared with scattering experiments.  相似文献

Poly(2-methoxy-5-[2′-ethylhexyoxy]-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEHPPV) derivatives with polyacrylic acid (PAA) chains grafted onto their backbone were found to be water soluble, and they exhibited a dramatic increase in their fluorescence intensity in the presence of a variety of surfactants, even at concentrations far below their critical micelle concentrations (CMC). This increase was accompanied by a blue-shift in the emission maximum. These observations are rationalized based on the postulate that the backbone conformation of the conjugated polymer is modulated upon interaction of the surfactant molecules with the polyelectrolytic tethers, which in turn results in a significant depletion of intra-chain interchromophore interactions that are known to cause red-shifted emission bands with significantly lower emission yields.  相似文献

Poly[(2-methoxy-5-propyloxysulfonate)phenylene vinylene] (MPS-PPV) was synthesized directly from its bischloromethylated monomer, considerably reducing the total number of steps involved in the polymer preparation. For the first time, a simple technique of ultracentrifugation was employed for final purification of the polymer. The interactions among the polymer, surfactant, and quencher molecules, as well as amplified fluorescence quenching and fluorescence enhancement associated with the interactions, were investigated and discussed. When compared with methyl viologen [MV]2+, higher values of Stern-Volmer constant K(SV) values on the order of > or =10(7) M(-1) were observed for the newly synthesized N-(2-carboxyhexadecanoyl)-N'-methyl-4,4'-bipyridinium iodide bromide ([CHMB]2+) quencher in the presence of 1,2-dioleoyl-3- trimethylammonium propane (DOTAP) surfactant. Comparisons of surfactants demonstrated that the K(SV) of [CHMB]2+ was 10-fold higher in the presence of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) surfactant than with DOTAP. Polymer fluorescence was totally recovered upon addition of DOTAP surfactant to a MV-quenched polymer system, whereas only 50% of fluorescence was recovered upon addition of DOTAP surfactant to the CHMB-quenched polymer solution. In contrast, no fluorescence was recovered when DTAB was added to either the MV- or CHMB-quenched polymer systems. Thus, fluorescence enhancement was observed for the polymer complex with DOTAP, whereas fluorescence quenching was predominant in the polymer complex with DTAB. Such studies will not only help to better understand the intrinsic properties of the ionic conjugated polymer and amplified fluorescence quenching and enhancement but also provide guidelines to develop the next generation of ionic conjugated-polymer-based biosensors.  相似文献

A series of poly[p-(phenyleneethynylene)-alt-(thienyleneethynylene)] (PPETE) polymers with variable percent loadings of the N,N,N'-trimethylethylenediamino group on the polymer backbone were synthesized and fully characterized. Photophysical studies show that changes in the loading of the amino group receptor on the backbone do not affect the polymer electronic structure in either the ground or excited states. The fluorescence quantum yields were found to be directly related to the loading of the amino groups and can be modeled by a Stern-Volmer type relationship. Photophysical studies related the total quenching efficiency to the inherent rate of photoinduced electron transfer (PET), the lifetime of the exciton, the rate of excitation energy migration along the polymer backbone, and the total loading of the receptor on the polymer. The role of the loading dependence on the application of these polymers as fluorescence "turn-on" sensors for toxic metal cations in dilute solution was also studied. Results showed that the fluorescence enhancement upon binding various cations was maintained even when the amino receptor loading along the polymer backbone was reduced.  相似文献

Degradable polymers are a currently growing field of research for biomedical and materials science applications. The majority of such compounds are based on polyesters and polyamides. In contrast, their phosphorus‐containing counterparts are much less studied, in spite of their potential precise degradation profile and biocompatibility. Herein, the first library of poly(phosphorodiamidate)s (PPDAs) with two P?N bonds forming the polymer backbone and a pendant P?OR group is prepared through acyclic diene metathesis polymerization. They are designed to vary in their hydrophilicity and are compared with the structural analogues poly(phosphoester)s (PPEs) with respect to their thermal properties and degradation profiles. The degradation of PPDAs can be controlled precisely by the pH: under acidic conditions the P?N linkages in the polymer backbone are cleaved, whereas under basic conditions the pendant ester is cleaved selectively and almost no backbone degradation occurs. The PPDAs exhibit distinctively higher thermal stability (from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)) and higher glass transition and/or melting temperatures (from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)) compared with analogous PPEs. This renders this exotic class of phosphorus‐containing polymers as highly promising for the development of future drug carriers or tissue engineering scaffolds.  相似文献

Conjugated polymers containing triphenylamine group are synthesized via Suzuki coupling polymerization. Fluorescent‐conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN) are prepared by reprecipitation method using the newly synthesized conjugated polymer. CPN can be encapsulated with polyarginine by electrostatic interaction. The CPN modified with polyarginine exhibit excellent interaction with graphene oxide (GO) which is chemically modified with hydrophilic groups that possesses negative charge, which, in turn, induces the quenching of the fluorescence of CPN upon formation of CPN–GO nanohybrid. Upon exposure to trypsin, the quenched fluorescence is recovered by release of CPN from the nanohybrid, because trypsin cleaves the polyarginine linkage, resulting in weakening of interaction between CPN and GO. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two carboxylate-substituted, fluorescent (Phi = 0.08), water-soluble poly(p-phenyleneethynylene)s (PPE) and a water-soluble model compound were exposed to a series of proteins and bovine serum. While the anionic PPEs do not have any specific binding sites, they form stable complexes with histone, lysozyme, myoglobin, and hemoglobin. The complex formation was evidenced by fluorescence quenching. Bovine serum albumin does not quench the fluorescence of the PPEs but enhances it, probably due to its surfactant character. These results imply that the use of charged conjugated polymers as biosensors, while an attractive proposition, has to take into account strong nonspecific interactions between conjugated polymers and the host of proteins that is found in cells and complex biological fluids.  相似文献

A targeting strategy based on the selective enzyme-mediated activation of polymeric photosensitizer prodrugs (PPP) within pathological tissue has led to the development of agents with the dual ability to detect and treat cancer. Herein, a detailed study of a simple model system for these prodrugs is described. We prepared "first-generation" PPP by directly tethering the photosensitizer (PS) pheophorbide a to poly-(L)-lysine via epsilon amide links and observed that by increasing the number of PS on a polymer chain, energy transfer between PS units improved leading to better quenching efficiency. Fragmentation of the PPP backbone by trypsin digestion gave rise to a pronounced fluorescence increase and to more efficient generation of reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation. In vitro tests using the T-24 bladder carcinoma cell line and ex vivo experiments using mouse intestines illustrated the remarkable and selective ability of these PPP to fluoresce and induce phototoxicity upon enzymatic activation. This work elucidated the basic physicochemical parameters, such as water solubility and quenching/activation behavior, required for the future elaboration of more adaptable "second-generation" PPP, in which the PS is tethered to a proteolytically stable polymer backbone via enzyme-specific peptide linkers. This polymer architecture offers great flexibility to tailor make the PPP to target any pathological tissue known to over-express a specific enzyme.  相似文献

The conformation of dinonyl poly para phenylene ethynylenes (PPEs) with carboxylate side chains, equilibrated in solvents of different quality have been studied using molecular dynamics simulations. PPEs are of interest because of their tunable electro‐optical properties, chemical diversity, and functionality which are essential in wide range of applications. The polymer conformation determines the conjugation length and their assembly mode and affects electro‐optical properties which are critical in current and potential uses. This study investigates the effect of carboxylate fraction on PPEs side chains on the conformation of chains in the dilute limit, in solvents of different quality. The dinonyl PPE chains are modeled atomistically, where the solvents are modeled both implicitly and explicitly. Dinonyl PPEs maintained a stretched out conformation up to a carboxylate fraction f of 0.7 in all solvents studied. The nonyl side chains are extended and oriented away from the PPE backbone in toluene and in implicit good solvent, whereas in water and implicit poor solvent, the nonyl side chains are collapsed toward the PPE backbone. Rotation around the aromatic ring is fast and no long range correlations are seen within the backbone. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2016 , 54, 582–588  相似文献

The interaction of a hydrophobically modified anionic polymer (PMAOVE) with a cationic surfactant (DTAB) was studied using a multi-technique approach: turbidity, surface tension, and viscosity measurements, as well as EPR (5-doxyl stearic acid) and fluorescence (pyrene) probe techniques were used. In the investigated pH range (4-10), the cationic surfactant headgroups interact with the anionic carboxylic groups of the polymer backbone. In addition, nonpolar interactions of the surfactant chains with the n-octyl chains of PMAOVE stabilize the PMAOVE-DTAB complexes. Charge neutralization of the anionic polymer by the cationic surfactant leads to precipitation of the PMAOVE-DTAB complex at a certain DTAB concentration range. Further addition of DTAB causes a charge reversal of the complex and, subsequently, resolubilization of the precipitate. At an acidic pH (pH = 4), a second precipitation was observed, which is probably caused by conformational changes in the PMAOVE-DTAB complex. This second precipitate can be resolubilized by further addition of surfactant. At a neutral and basic pH, this second precipitation is absent. EPR analysis indicates that the surfactants form an ordered structure at the extended polymer chain at a neutral and basic pH, whereas at an acidic pH, a less ordered surfactant layer is formed on the coiled polymer with more hydrophobic microdomains.  相似文献

The interaction between cationic surfactants and isopropylacrylamide-acrylic acid-ethyl methacrylate (IPA:AA:EMA) terpolymers has been investigated using steady-state fluorescence and spectrophotometric measurements to assess the effect of the polymer composition on the aggregation process and terpolymers’ thermosensitivities. Micropolarity studies using pyrene show that the interaction of cationic surfactants with IPA:AA:EMA terpolymers occurs at surfactant concentrations much smaller than that observed for the pure surfactant in aqueous solution. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) values decrease with both the hydrocarbon length of the surfactant and the content of ethyl methacrylate. These results were interpreted as a manifestation of the increasing contribution of attractive hydrophobic and electrostatic forces between negatively charged polymer chains and positively charged surfactant molecules. The increase of ethyl methacrylate in the copolymers lowers the CAC due to the larger hydrophobic character of the polymer backbone. The cloud point determination reveals that the lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) depend strongly on the copolymer composition and surfactant nature. The binding of surfactants molecules to the polymer chain screens the electrostatic repulsion between the carboxylic groups inducing a conformational transition and the dehydration of the polymer chain.  相似文献

We synthesized and characterized a series of new polymers-hydrophobically modified cationic polysaccharides-based on dextran having pendant N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-N,N-dimethyl-N-alkylammonium chloride groups randomly distributed along the polymer backbone. These polymers are good candidates for studying the hydrophobic effect on polymer/surfactant association. In previous papers we reported their interactions with oppositely charged surfactants. For further insight into the relative importance of the hydrophobic interaction in the association process now we studied the thermodynamics of the interaction of these hydrophobically modified polymers with surfactants of the same charge (DMRX/CnTAC) by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). In order to try to discriminate the solution behavior of these polymer/surfactant systems, we analyzed separately the interaction of unmodified dextran with ionic surfactants and the interactions between the corresponding cationic surfactants. The interaction enthalpies for DMRX/CnTAC systems were derived from a proposed thermodynamic model with equations that describe the polymer-surfactant interactions. The thermodynamic parameters for the DMRX/CnTAC aggregation process as well as surfactant micellization in the presence of the polymer were also calculated. From all the results we were able to ascertain the effect on the interactions of changing the alkyl chain length of the polyelectrolyte pendant groups or the surfactant. The importance of the polymer aggregation state on the mechanism of interaction was also addressed.  相似文献

Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was used to identify the structures formed during the adsorption of sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) on charged TiO2 particles and to determine the subsequent interaction of the adsorbed polymer structure with cationic and anionic surfactants. The nature of the polymer structure was deduced from the adsorbed amount in tandem with the information obtained from monitoring the change in the relative intensity of the COO- and COOH infrared bands. In particular, it is found that the relative number of COO- and COOH groups on the polymer backbone for the adsorbed state differs from that of the same polymer in solution. This difference is due to a shift in the population of COO-/COOH groups on the polymer backbone that arises when the COO- groups bind to positively charged sites on the surface. A change in the number COO-/COOH groups on the polymer is thus related to a change in the bound fraction of polymer. It is shown that the initial NaPA approaching the bare surface adopts a flat conformation with high bound fraction. Once the bare sites on the surface are covered, the accommodation of additional polymer on the surface requires the existing adsorbed layer to adopt a conformation with a lower bound fraction. When the adsorbed NaPA is probed with a solution containing the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the SDS competes for surface sites and displaces some of the bound NaPA segments from the surface, giving rise to an polymer layer adsorbed with an even lower bound fraction. In contrast, addition of a solution containing the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) results in the binding of the surfactant directly to the free COO- sites on the adsorbed polymer backbone. Confirmation of a direct interaction of the CTAB headgroup with the free COO- groups of the polymer is provided by intensity changes in the headgroup IR bands of the CTAB.  相似文献

A series of 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP) functionalized polypyrrole terpolymers, capable of specific binding to IgE antibodies (proteins), have been synthesized using oxidizing initiator, ammonium persulfate and were characterized by 1H-NMR, IR, DSC, Light Scattering etc. The terpolymers were composed of monomers and macromonomers: monomer (pyrrole), macromonomer A (pyrrole with pendant ethylene glycol) and macromonomer B (pyrrole with pendant DNP) with specific functionality of conductance, processiblity and binding, respectively. The terpolymers are found to be semiconductive, (5 × 10?6 S cm?1) by itself without the addition of doping agents. Molecular dynamics simulation of terpolymer shows that the DNP-(2,4-dinitrophenyl) functional group extends out from the polymer backbone and thus, is available for binding. The DNP functional groups on the terpolymer achieve steady state binding with anti-DNP IgE proteins at nanomolar concentrations in solution. The terpolymer was blended with sulfonated polystyrene and processed in fibers which exhibited effective specific binding to fluorescently tagged IgE proteins and therefore, possessed the potential to be an active component in biosensor.  相似文献

Steady-state fluorescence measurements and isothermal titration calorimetric experiments have been performed to study the interaction between a telechelic polymer, pyrene-end-capped poly(ethylene oxide) (PYPY), and sodium alkyl sulfate surfactants having decyl, dodecyl, and tetradecyl hydrocarbon tails. Fluorometric results suggest polymer-surfactant interaction in the very low range of polymer concentrations. The relative variation in the excimer to monomer pyrene emission intensities with varying surfactant concentration reveals that initial addition of surfactant favors intramolecular preassociation until the surfactant molecules start binding with the ethylene oxide (EO) chain. With the growing number of surfactant aggregates along the EO chain, the association becomes hindered due to the polyelectrolyte effect. The results from microcalorimetric titrations in the low concentration range of PYPY solution (approximately 10(-6) M) with alkyl sulfates suggest two kinds of surfactant-polymer interactions, one with the polymer hydrophobic end groups and the other with the ethylene oxide backbone. The overall polymer-surfactant interaction starts at a much lower surfactant concentration for the hydrophobically modified polymers compared to that in the case of unsubstituted poly(ethylene oxide) homopolymer. From the experiments critical aggregation concentration values and the second critical concentration where free micelles start forming have been determined. An endeavor has been made to unveil the mechanism underlying the corresponding associations of the surfactants with the polymer.  相似文献

The effect of ethanol on the interaction between the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic polymer poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) has been investigated using a range of techniques including surface tension, fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and viscosity. Surface tension and fluorescence studies show that the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant decreases to a minimum value around 15 wt % ethanol; that is, it follows the cosurfactant effect. However, in the presence of PVP, the onset of the interaction, denoted cmc(1), between the surfactant and the polymer is considerably less dependent on ethanol concentration. The saturation point, cmc(2), however, reflects the behavior of the cmc in that it decreases upon addition of ethanol. This results in a decrease in the amount of surfactant bound to the polymer [C(bound) = cmc(2) - cmc] at saturation. The viscosity of simple PVP solutions depends on ethanol concentration, but since SANS studies show that ethanol has no effect on the polymer conformation, the changes observed in the viscosity reflect the viscosity of the background solvent. There are significant increases in bulk viscosity when the surfactant is added, and these have been correlated with the polymer conformation extracted from an analysis of the SANS data and with the amount of polymer adsorbed at the micelle surface. Competition between ethanol and PVP to occupy the surfactant headgroup region exists; at low ethanol concentration, the PVP displaces the ethanol and the PVP/SDS complex resembles that formed in the absence of the ethanol. At higher ethanol contents, the polymer does not bind to the ethanol-rich micelle surface.  相似文献
