The phase behavior of a mixture of poly(isoprene)-poly(oxyethylene) diblock copolymer (PI-PEO or C250EO70) and poly(oxyethylene) surfactant (C12EO3, C12EO5, C12EO6, C12EO7, and C12EO9) in water was investigated by phase study, small-angle X-ray scattering, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The copolymer is not soluble in surfactant micellar cubic (I1), hexagonal (H1), and lamellar (Lalpha) liquid crystals, whereas an isotropic copolymer fluid phase coexists with these liquid crystals. Although the PI-PEO is relatively lipophilic, it increases the cloud temperatures of C12EO3-9 aqueous solutions at a relatively high PI-PEO content in the mixture. Most probably, in the copolymer-rich region, PI-PEO and C12EOn form a spherical composite micelle in which surfactant molecules are located at the interface and the PI chains form an oil pool inside. In the C12EO5/ and C12EO6/PI-PEO systems, one kind of micelles is produced in the wide range of mixing fraction, although macroscopic phase separation was observed within a few days after the sample preparation. On the other hand, small surfactant micelles coexist with copolymer giant micelles in C12EO7/ and C12EO9/PI-PEO aqueous solutions in the surfactant-rich region. The micellar shape and size are calculated using simple geometrical relations and compared with DLS data. Consequently, a large PI-PEO molecule is not soluble in surfactant bilayers (Lalpha phase), infinitely long rod micelles (H1 phase), and spherical micelles (I1 phase or hydrophilic spherical micelles) as a result of the packing constraint of the large PI chain. However, the copolymer is soluble in surfactant rod micelles (C12EO5 and C12EO6) because a rod-sphere transition of the surfactant micelles takes place and the long PI chains are incorporated inside the large spherical micelles.  相似文献

The solubilization of triglycerides [1,2,3-tributanoylglycerol (TBG) and 1,2,3-trihexanoylglycerol (THG)] in water/octa(oxyethylene) dodecyl ether (C(12)EO(8)) systems has been investigated. Oil-induced changes in the structure of liquid crystals in water/C(12)EO(8) system have been studied by optical observation and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. In the water/C(12)EO(8)/oil systems, solubilization of THG and TBG induces a transition between H(1) (hexagonal) and L(alpha) (lamellar) liquid crystals at high C(12)EO(8) concentrations, whereas at low surfactant concentrations a H(1)-I(1) (discontinuous micellar cubic phase) transition occurs. This anomalous behavior is attributed to the partitioning of solubilized oil in the micelles. At low surfactant concentrations THG is mainly solubilized into the hydrophobic cores of the surfactant micelles, indicating high swelling or low penetration tendency, resulting in a steep increase in the radius of the aggregates (r(H)), thereby inducing a rod-sphere transition. At high surfactant concentrations, THG is not mainly solubilized into the core but distributed between the palisade layer and the core of the aggregates. The TBG is considerably solubilized into the surfactant palisade layer, indicating a high penetration tendency, resulting in an increase in the effective cross-sectional area per surfactant molecule, a(s). The thermal stability of the I(1) phase increases with the solubilization of THG into the aggregate cores. The percentage deviation of the experimental interlayer spacings (P(d)) from complete swelling was also evaluated for different triglycerides in the H(1) and L(alpha) phases or different surfactant concentrations. It is found that the penetration tendency of triglycerides could be used as a tuning parameter for I(1) phase formation depending on the surfactant concentration and the molecular weight of the oil.  相似文献

The phase behavior of the water/poly(oxyethylene)-poly(dimethylsiloxane) copolymer (Si25C3EO51.6)/pentaoxyethylene dodecyl ether (C12EO5) ternary system has been studied. Both the silicone copolymer and the surfactant have equal volumes of hydrophilic and lipophilic parts; i.e., these are balanced amphiphiles. Although only a lamellar phase is observed in water-Si25C3EO51.6 and water-C12EO5 binary systems, a variety of liquid crystalline phases, including normal micellar cubic (I1), hexagonal (H1), bicontinuous cubic (V1), lamellar (L(alpha)), reverse bicontinuous cubic (V2), and reverse hexagonal (H2), are observed in the copolymer-rich region of the ternary phase diagram. The small C12EO5 molecules dissolve at the hydrophobic interface in the thick bilayer of the Si25C3EO51.6 L(alpha) phase occupying a large area of the total interface of the aggregates and modulate the curvature of the aggregates. Hence a variety of self-assembled structures are observed. In contrast, Si25C3EO51.6 is not dissolved in the thin bilayer of the C12EO5 lamellar phase (L'(alpha)). Hence, the C12EO5 L'(alpha) phase coexists with copolymer-rich L(alpha) and H2 phases. Consequently, small surfactant molecules are dissolved in a large silicone copolymer aggregate to induce a change in layer curvature, but a large copolymer molecule is hard to incorporate with surfactant aggregates.  相似文献

We have studied the effect of adding sucrose distearate (2C(18)SE) on the solubilization capacity of microemulsions formed in the water/C(12)EO(6)/n-decane system. Upon addition of 2C(18)SE to the binary water/C(12)EO(6) system, a lamellar liquid crystal region developed. This suggests that the rigidity of the surfactant layer is strengthened. The solubilization of water and n-decane in the bicontinuous microemulsions increases about three times upon replacing 10% C(12)EO(6) with 2C(18)SE; besides, the HLB temperature is not greatly affected by 2C(18)SE. On the other hand, sucrose monostearate (C(18)SE) does not have such a function. The effect of added 2C(18)SE on the solubilization capacity of the discrete droplet-type o/w or w/o microemulsions was also studied. The efficiency of the solubilization-improving effect is reduced when the system is far from the HLB temperature. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.  相似文献

Phase behavior was investigated for water/supercritical CO 2 (W/scCO2) microemulsions stabilized with sodium bis(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl)-2-sulfosuccinate (8FS(EO) 2) mixed with various guest surfactants. Only for the mixtures with fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon hybrid anionic surfactants (FC6-HC n), the maximum water-to-surfactant molar ratio (W0(c)) was larger than that estimated from linear interpolation of the W0(c) values for pure 8FS(EO) 2 and pure guest surfactant. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) measurement for the microemulsion revealed that the mixing of 8FS(EO) 2 with FC6-HC n can prevent a phase transition from the microemulsion to the liquid crystal even in the presence of excess water. It was also found from the measurement of water/scCO 2 interfacial tension that the area occupied per surfactant molecule was markedly increased by the mixing with FC6-HC n. The loose molecular packing, probably due to a microsegregation of 8FS(EO) 2 and FC6-HC n, is consistent with the enhanced stability of the microemulsion upon surfactant mixing.  相似文献

Self-diffusion constants of amphiphilic molecules in D(2)O solutions of mixed poly(oxyethylene)-polydimethylsiloxane diblock copolymer (POE-PDMS, Si(m)C(3)EO(n)) and poly(oxyethylene) dodecyl ether (C(12)EO(n)) were measured by pulsed-field-gradient NMR method. In the D(2)O/Si(25)C(3)EO(51.6)/C(12)EO(8) or D(2)O/Si(52)C(3)EO(51.6)/C(12)EO(8) systems, small and large micelles coexist in a wide range of Si(m)C(3)EO(51.6) fraction in total amphiphiles, whereas such a coexisting phenomenon does not take place in the D(2)O/Si(5.8)C(3)EO(51.6)/C(12)EO(8) system. The coexisting phenomenon also takes place in the D(2)O/Si(25)C(3)EO(51.6)/C(12)EO(5) system although the range of mixing fraction is limited. By obtaining each contribution of surfactant and copolymer molecules to the attenuation decay of the echo signal from the proton of the poly(oxyethylene) chain, we could evaluate the composition of the mixed micelles in the D(2)O/Si(25)C(3)EO(51.6)/C(12)EO(8) system. The copolymer content in the mixed micelle increases proportionally to the copolymer mole fraction in the aqueous solution. From the series of self-diffusion measurements, we can conclude that the miscibility of Si(m)C(3)EO(n) and C(12)EO(n) in aqueous micelles becomes poor and the coexisting phenomenon takes place when the PDMS chain becomes much longer than the dodecyl chain of C(12)EO(n) or the POE chain of C(12)EO(n) becomes long. Furthermore it is also revealed that very few silicone copolymer molecules can be incorporated in small surfactant micelles.  相似文献

The conductivity of AOT/IPM/water reverse micellar systems as a function of temperature, has been found to be non-percolating at three different concentrations (100, 175 and 250 mM), while the addition of nonionic surfactants [polyoxyethylene(10) cetyl ether (Brij-56) and polyoxyethylene(20) cetyl ether (Brij-58)] to these systems exhibits temperature-induced percolation in conductance in non-percolating AOT/isopropyl myristate (IPM)/water system at constant compositions (i.e., at fixed total surfactant concentration, omega and X(nonionic)). The influence of total surfactant concentration (micellar concentration) on the temperature-induced percolation behaviors of these systems has been investigated. The effect of Brij-58 is more pronounced than that of Brij-56 in inducing percolation. The threshold percolation temperature, Tp has been determined for these systems in presence of additives of different molecular structures, physical parameters and/or interfacial properties. The additives have shown both assisting and resisting effects on the percolation threshold. The additives, bile salt (sodium cholate), urea, formamide, cholesteryl acetate, cholesteryl benzoate, toluene, a triblock copolymer [(EO)13(PO)30(EO)13, Pluronic, PL64], polybutadiene, sucrose esters (sucrose dodecanoates, L-1695 and sucrose monostearate S-1670), formamide distinctively fall in the former category, whereas sodium chloride, cholesteryl palmitate, crown ether, ethylene glycol constitute the latter for both systems. Sucrose dodecanoates (L-595) had almost marginal effect on the process. The observed behavior of these additives on the percolation phenomenon has been explained in terms of critical packing parameter and/or other factors, which influence the texture of the interface and solution properties of the mixed reverse micellar systems. The activation energy, Ep for the percolation process has been evaluated. Ep values for the AOT/Brij-56 systems have been found to be lower than those of AOT/Brij-58 systems. The concentration of additives influence the parameters Tp and Ep for both systems. A preliminary report for the first time on the percolation phenomenon in mixed reverse micelles in presence of additives has been suggested on the basis of these parameters (Tp and Ep).  相似文献

The impact of some model perfumes on surfactant self-assembly has been investigated, using small-angle neutron scattering. A range of different model perfumes, with differing degrees of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, have been explored, and in order of increasing hydrophobicity include phenyl ethanol (PE), rose oxide (RO), limonene (LM), linalool (LL), and dihydrogen mercenol (DHM). The effect of their solubilization on the nonionic surfactant micelles of dodecaethylene monododecyl ether (C12EO12) and on the mixed surfactant aggregates of C12EO12 and the cationic dialkyl chain surfactant dihexadecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (DHDAB) has been quantified. For PE and LL the effect of their solubilization on the micelle, mixed micelle/lamellar and lamellar regimes of the C12EO12/DHDAB mixtures, has also been determined. For the C12EO12 and mixed DHDAB/C12EO12 micelles PE is solubilized predominantly at the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface, whereas the more hydrophobic perfumes, from RO to DHM, are solubilized predominantly in the hydrophobic core of the micelles. For the C12EO12 micelles, with increasing perfume concentration, the more hydrophobic perfumes (RO to DHM) promote micellar growth. Relatively modest growth is observed for RO and LM, whereas substantial growth is observed for LL and DHM. In contrast, for the addition of PE the C12EO12 micelles remain as relatively small globular micelles, with no significant growth. For the C12EO12/DHDAB mixed micelles, the pattern of behavior with the addition of perfume is broadly similar, except that the micellar growth with increasing perfume concentration for the more hydrophobic perfumes is less pronounced. In the Lbeta (Lv) region of the DHDAB-rich C12EO12/DHDAB phase diagram, the addition of PE results in a less structured (less rigid) lamellar phase, and ultimately a shift toward a structure more consistent with a sponge or bicontinuous phase. In the mixed L1/Lbeta region of the phase diagram PE induces a slight shift in the coexistence from Lbeta toward L1. The addition of LL to the Lbeta (Lv) region of the DHDAB-rich C12EO12/DHDAB phase diagram also results in a reduction in the lamellar structure (less rigid lamellae), and a shift toward a structure more consistent with a sponge or bicontinuous phase, or a coexisting phase of small vesicles. For the mixed L1/Lbeta region of the phase diagram LL induces a shift toward a greater L beta component.  相似文献

The phase behavior and formation of self-assemblies in the ternary water/fluorinated surfactant (C(8)F(17)EO(10))/hydrophobic fluorinated polymer (C(3)F(6)O)(n)COOH system and the application of those assemblies in the preparation of mesostructured silica have been investigated by means of phase study, small angle X-ray scattering, and rheology. Hexagonal (H(1)), bicontinuous cubic (V(1)) with Ia3d symmetry, and polymer rich lamellar (L(alpha)(')) are observed in the ternary diagram. C(8)F(17)EO(10) molecules are dissolved in polymer rich aggregates, whereas (C(3)F(6)O)(n)COOH molecules are practically insoluble in the surfactant lamellar phase due to packing restrictions. Hence, two types of lamellar phases exist: one with surfactant rich (L(alpha)) and the other with polymer rich (L(alpha)(')) in the water/C(8)F(17)EO(10)/(C(3)F(6)O)(n)COOH system. As suggested by rheological measurements, worm-like micelles are present in C(8)F(17)EO(10) aqueous solutions but a rod-sphere transition takes place by solubilization of (C(3)F(6)O)(n)COOH. C(8)F(17)EO(10) acts as a structure directing agent for the preparation of hexagonal mesoporous silica by the precipitation method. The addition of (C(3)F(6)O)(n)COOH induces the formation of larger but disordered pores.

In this study we estimated the structural parameters of (water+propylene glycol)/sucrose esters/(benzaldhyde+ethanol) systems. The weight ratios of water/propylene glycol and that of benzaldhyde/ethanol equal 2 and 1, respectively. The sucrose esters were sucrose laurates (L595, L1695, and SM1200), sucrose myristate (M1695), sucrose palmitate (P1670), sucrose oleate (O1570), and sucrose stearate (S1570). The pseudoternary phase behavior at 37°C was explored to determine the extension of the microemulsion phase regions. A one‐phase microemulsion region extending from the oil rich region to the water rich corner was observed in these systems. It was found that minor changes in the surfactant chain length, structure, and composition suffice to provoke a considerable change in the aggregation number, core radius and interfacial area per surfactant and cosurfactant molecules head groups in the formed microemulsions. The interfacial area per surfactant head group decreases with the increase in the surfactant chain length. For a sucrose ester with a given chain length the interfacial area per surfactant head group decreases with the increase in the surfactant monoester content. The interfacial area per surfactant head group increases with the increase in the surfactant concentration and the water core volume in the formulated microemulsions.  相似文献

Mixed surfactant systems have the potential to impart controlled combinations of functionality and pore structure to mesoporous metal oxides. Here, we combine a functional glucopyranoside surfactant with a cationic surfactant that readily forms liquid crystalline mesophases. The phase diagram for the ternary system CTAB/H(2)O/n-octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (C(8)G(1)) at 50 degrees C is measured using polarized optical microscopy. At this temperature, the binary C(8)G(1)/H(2)O system forms disordered micellar solutions up to 72 wt% C(8)G(1), and there is no hexagonal phase. With the addition of CTAB, we identify a large area of hexagonal phase, as well as cubic, lamellar and solid surfactant phases. The ternary phase diagram is used to predict the synthesis of thick mesoporous silica films via a direct liquid crystal templating technique. By changing the relative concentration of mixed surfactants as well as inorganic precursor species, surfactant/silica mesostructured thick films can be synthesized with variable glucopyranoside content, and with 2D hexagonal, cubic and lamellar structures. The domains over which different mesophases are prepared correspond well with those of the ternary phase diagram if the hydrophilic inorganic species is assumed to act as an equivalent volume of water.  相似文献

The present article reports on static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS) studies of aqueous solutions of the nonionic surfactant C12EO6 and the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer EO20PO68EO20 (P123) at temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees C. In water, P123 self-assembles into spherical micelles with a hydrodynamic radius of 10 nm, and at 40 degrees C, these micelles consist of 131 unimers. Addition of C12EO6 leads to an association of the surfactant molecules to the P123 micelles and mixed micelles are formed. The size and structure of the mixed micelles as well as interparticle interactions were studied by varying the surfactant-to-copolymer (C12EO6/P123) molar ratio. The novelty of this study consists of a composition-induced structural change of the mixed micelles at constant temperature. They gradually change from being spherical to polymer-like with increasing C12EO6 content. At low C12EO6/P123 molar ratios (below 12), the SLS measurements showed that the molar mass of the mixed micelles decreases with an increasing amount of C12EO6 in the micelles for all investigated temperatures. In this regime, the mixed micelles are spherical and the DLS measurements revealed a decrease in the hydrodynamic radius of the mixed micelles. An exception was found for C12EO6/P123 molar ratios between 2 and 3, where the mixed micelles become rodlike at 40 degrees C. This was the subject of a previous study and has hence not been investigated here. At high molar ratios (48 and above), the polymer-like micelles present a concentration-induced growth, similar to that observed in the pure C12EO6/water system.  相似文献

Lamellar liquid crystals of the nonionic surfactant dodecyl polyoxyethylene (4) polyoxypropylene (5) ether (DEP) were investigated by means of phase diagram and rheological technique at 25°C in the presence of different solvents. The aqueous medium includes pure water, physiological saline and 20% sucrose solution, and the oil phase includes isopropyl myristate (IPM), oleic acid, and geraniol, which are all pharmaceutically accepted chemicals. The steady and dynamic rheological property analyses of the lamellar liquid crystals formed in DEP/H2O/IPM system indicate that the lamellar samples constructed by this special surfactant behave as pseudo-plastic fluid with relatively high elasticity and possess defects in their assembled structure. Also in this system, the elastic character gets decreased with increase in the water content. Furthermore, the comparison investigations show that the relatively high polar oil component increases the network strength of the lamellar phase, while increase in the polarity of water phase enhances the structure defects.  相似文献

In this study the mixed micelle behavior of an alkyl polyglycoside is compared to a surfactant of polyoxyethylene type, by means of surface tension measurements. The two nonionic surfactants are compared in mixed micelle systems together with an anionic surfactant. The surfactant mixtures are: decyl-beta-maltoside (C(10)M) with dodecyl benzenesulfonate (C(12)BS) and octaethyleneglycol mono n-decyl ether (C(10)EO(8)) with C(12)BS. The mixture of C(10)M and C(10)EO(8) is also studied. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the concentration at which the surface tension reduction is 20 mNm(-1) (C(20)) are determined at different mixing ratios of the surfactant mixtures. By applying the nonideal mixed micelle theory, interaction parameters at CMC (beta(CMC)) and C(20) (beta(C20)) are calculated for the surfactant mixtures. The results show that the C(10)M-C(12)BS mixture has a beta(CMC) parameter of -2.1, whereas the beta(CMC) parameter for the C(10)EO(8)-C(12)BS mixture is -3.3, indicating a weaker net attractive interaction between C(10)M and C(12)BS than between C(10)EO(8) and C(12)BS. This is attributed to a small negative and positive charge of the respective nonionic surfactants. This is supported by a slightly negative beta(CMC) parameter obtained for the surfactant mixture C(10)M-C(10)EO(8), indicating a small net attractive interaction between the two nonionic surfactants. The phase diagram of Brij 97/water/IPM systems was determined at 25 degrees C. Rich liquid crystalline phases including Lalpha, H1, and cubic Fd3m phases were identified by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Microstructure transitions of liquid crystals with changes in surfactant concentration and oil content are explained qualitatively by the surfactant packing parameter (vL/aSlc). Dynamic rheological results indicate that all three kinds of liquid crystals investigated show high elasticity. The lamellar, Lalpha, phases formed in Brij 97/water with two different oils, oleic acid and geraniol, were also studied in comparison with those of Brij 97/water/IPM systems. The strength of the network of lamellar phases formed in Brij 97/water/oleic acid and Brij 97/water/geraniol systems are appreciably stronger than for Brij 97/water/IPM systems, indicated by the smaller area of surfactant molecules at the interface and the higher moduli (G' and G').  相似文献

The phase behavior and self-assembled structures of perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide ethoxylate, C8F17SO2N(C3H7)(CH2CH2O)20H (abbreviated as C8F 17EO20), a nonionic fluorocarbon surfactant in an aqueous system, has been investigated by the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The C8F17EO20 forms micelles and different liquid crystal phases depending on the temperature and composition. The fluorocarbon micellar structure induced by temperature or composition change and added fluorocarbon cosurfactant has been systematically studied. The SAXS data were analyzed by the indirect Fourier transformation (IFT) and the generalized indirect Fourier transformation (GIFT) depending on the volume fraction of the surfactant and complemented by plausible model calculations. The C8F17EO20 forms spherical type micelles above critical micelle concentration (cmc) in the dilute region. The micelle tends to grow with temperature; however, the growth is not significant on changing temperature from 15-75 degrees C, which is attributed to the higher clouding temperature of the surfactant (>100 degrees C). On the other hand, the micellar structure (shape and size) is apparently unaffected by composition (1-25 wt %) at 25 degrees C. Nevertheless, addition of fluorocarbon cosurfactant of structure C8F17SO2N(C3H7)(CH2CH2O)H (abbreviated as C8F17EO1) to the semidilute solution of C8F17EO20 (25 wt %) favors micellar growth, which finally leads to the formation of viscoelastic wormlike micelles, as confirmed by rheometry and supported by SAXS. The onset sphere-to-wormlike transition in the structure of micelles in the C8F17EO20/water/C8F17EO1 system is due to the fact that the C8F17EO1 tends to go to the surfactant palisade layer so that the critical packing parameter increases due to a decrease in the effective cross-sectional area of the headgroup. As a result, spherical micelles grow into a cylinder, which after a certain concentration entangle to form a rigid network structure of wormlike micelles.  相似文献

Sucrose monoalkanoates (SE) form microemulsions by mixing with lipophilic cosurfactants such as the middle-chain alcohols, or sucrose polyalkanoates. In the case that sucrose monododecanoate is combined with hexanol, a middle-phase microemulsion is produced and coexists with excess water and oil phases at optimum mixing fraction of SE and hexanol. The bicontinuous structure of the microemulsion was confirmed by means of self-diffusion coefficient on NMR measurement.

A larger solubilization capability of oil is attained to a mixed mono- and poly-dodecanoate system than that of the middle-chain alcohol. It is probably due to the location of most of surfactant molecules at the micro-interface inside the microemulsion. In this system, instead of forming a three-phase region, a lamellar liquid crystal intrudes into multi-phase region since the surfactant layer is rather rigid as which was supported by the results of SAXS and ESR measurements. Further addition of a short-chain alcohol such as propanol to the mixed system leads to the flexible interface, as a consequence three-phase microemulsion with large solubilization is formed.  相似文献

The knowledge of the exact shapes of micelles in various micellar phases found in both lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals is very important to our understanding of the underlying principles of molecular self-assembly. In the current paper we present a detailed structural study of the hexagonal close packed (hcp, space group P63/mmc) micellar phase, observed in the binary mixtures of nonionic surfactant C12EO8 and water. The reconstructed electron density map of the phase shows perfectly spherical micelles. A spherical core/shell model of micelles, which fits the observed X-ray diffraction pattern satisfactorily, is subsequently constructed. The results confirm the previous assumption that the hcp phase consists of spherical close contacting micelles, each of which contains a low-density core of aliphatic parts and a high-density shell of hydrated ethylene oxide segments, with the gaps between the micelles filled by pure water.  相似文献
