Turbulence modulation of gas-solid flow in vertical tube and horizontal channel in dilute and moderately dense suspensions is investigated numerically using a four way Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Low Reynolds number k-l model is used for analyzing the fluid phase motion. A new model is presented based on a source-term formulation, which can predict fluid phase turbulence augmentation due to the presence of large particles and damping of turbulence due to small particles in the core of the channel and tube. Particle-particle and particle-wall collisions are simulated based on a deterministic approach, and coupling terms representing the fluid-particle interactions are also taken into account. The predicted fluid mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are in good agreement with the available experimental data. Additional numerical simulation results for variation of the eddy viscosity, turbulence production and dissipation are also presented for different values of loading ratios.  相似文献

Local measurements of void fraction and continuous phase velocity field in water-air bubble, grid turbulence were conducted in a channel of vertical, square test section. The measured statistics indicate that, due mainly to the interaction of mean shear with the dispersed phase, the turbulence structure of the flow is modified. The observed change is characterized by a strong spatial dependence of void fraction and liquid flow properties, and the emergence of two spatial regions controlled by different physical processes. Intensity measurements indicate significant departure from isotropy in the flow. Two distinct regimes corresponding to low and high values of void fraction have been also identified. The autocorrelation and spectra measurements indicate that for low void fraction the scales of turbulence decrease while for higher values of void fraction increase again and inverse cascade is observed.  相似文献

The present work examines the predictive capability of a two-fluid CFD model that is based on the kinetic theory of granular flow in simulating dilute-phase turbulent liquid-particle pipe flows in which the inter-stitial fluid effect on the particle fluctuating motion is significant. The impacts of employing different drag correlations and turbulence closure models to describe the fluid-particle interactions(i.e.drag force and long-range interaction)are examined at both the mean and fluctuating velocity levels. The model pre-dictions are validated using experimental data of turbulent liquid-particle flows in a vertical pipe at different particle Reynolds numbers(ReP > 400 and ReP < 400),which characterize the importance of the vortex shedding phenomenon in the fluid-phase turbulence modulation. The results indicate that(1)the fluctuating velocity level predictions at different ReP are highly sensitive to the drag correlation selec-tion and(2)different turbulence closure models must be employed to accurately describe the long-range fluid-particle interaction in each phase. In general, good agreement is found between the model predic-tions and the experimental data at both the mean and fluctuating velocity levels provided that appropriate combinations of the drag correlation and the turbulence closure model are selected depending on Rep.  相似文献

A time-dependent three-dimensionally skewed flow is investigated using direct numerical simulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The effect on the instantaneous and mean turbulent field is investigated. Instantaneous flowfields reveal that the skewing has the effect of initially reducing the strength and height of quasi-streamwise vortices of both signs of rotation with respect to the skewing. A mechanism for this process is put forward. The mean flowfields show drops in turbulence quantities such as turbulence kinetic energy. In addition to this, two-equation turbulence modelling of the flow is carried out. This highlights a deficiency, in that the standard turbulence models are unable to capture the drop in turbulence intensity due to the skewing. A modification based on the exact dissipation equation is found to significantly improve the model behaviour for this flow. Turbulence Plus
This paper attempts to give a concise overview of the turbulence research performed at the Laboratory for Aero and Hydrodynamics of the Delft University of Technology under the guidance of Frans Nieuwstadt. Frans Nieuwstadt was appointed in 1986 as director of the laboratory, and he held this position until his sudden death in 2005. Frans’ principal interest was to investigate turbulence at a fundamental level, but also to consider turbulence and its role in other processes. He coined a name for this research: turbulence plus.  相似文献

The accuracy of tip vortex flow prediction in the near‐field region is investigated numerically by attempting to quantify the shortcomings of the turbulence models and the flow solver. In particular, some turbulence models can produce a ‘numerical diffusion’ that artificially smears the vortex core. Low‐order finite differencing techniques of the convective and pressure terms of the Navier–Stokes equations and inadequate grid density and distribution can also produce the same adverse effect. The flow over a wing and the near‐wake with the wind tunnel walls included was simulated using 2.5 million grid points. Two subset problems, one using a steady, three‐dimensional analytical vortex, and the other, a vortex obtained from experiment and propagated downstream, were also devised in order to make the study of vortex preservation more tractable. The method of artificial compressibility is used to solve the steady, three‐dimensional, incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Two one‐equation turbulence models (Baldwin–Barth and Spalart–Allmaras turbulence models), have been used with the production term modified to account for the stabilizing effect of the nearly solid body rotation in the vortex core. Finally, a comparison between the computed results and experiment is presented. Published in 1999 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The temporal and spatial evolution processes of the in-cylinder flow structures and turbulence intensities in the symmetry and offset planes of a motored four-valve, four-stroke engine during the intake and compression strokes are diagnosed by using a particle image velocimeter. Two pistons of different crown shapes (flat-crown and slightly concave-crown pistons) are studied. The inception, establishment, and evolution of the tumbling vortical flow structures during the intake and compression strokes are clearly depicted. Quantitative strengths of the rotating vortical flow motions are presented by a dimensionless parameter, the tumble ratio, which can represent the mean angular velocity of the vortices in the target plane. The turbulence intensity of the in-cylinder flow is also calculated by using the measured time-varying velocity data. The results show that the flat-crown piston induces higher bulk-averaged tumble ratio and turbulence intensity than the slightly concave-crown piston does because the tumble ratio and turbulence generated by the flat-crown piston in the offset planes during the compression stroke are particularly large. The engine with the flat-crown piston also presents larger torque and power outputs and lower hydrocarbon emission than that with the slightly concave-crown piston. This might be caused by the enhanced combustion in the engine cylinder due to the stronger tumble ratio and turbulence intensity.  相似文献

Some of the problems associated with applying currently available viscous flow calculation schemes to turbulent flow in gas-turbine blading and passages are reviewed. These flows pose severe difficulties in both numerics and turbulence modelling, although the main emphasis here is on the latter aspect. Since complex strain fields and strong body forces are an intrinsic part of flow in turbomachinery, it is preferable that the turbulence modelling of these flows be based on an approximation of the Reynolds stress transport equations themselves. Some current views on closure approximations for these equations are discussed. Applications considered include the effects of free stream turbulence and streamline curvature, the mixing of blade wakes, and the three-dimensional flows that arise in a 90° bend and in the corner boundary layer near a blade root  相似文献

Gas-particle two-phase turbulent flow in a vertical duct   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Two-phase gas-phase turbulent flows at various loadings between the two vertical parallel plates are analyzed. A thermodynamically consistent turbulent two-phase flow model that accounts for the phase fluctuation energy transport and interaction is used. The governing equation of the gas-phase is upgraded to a two-equation low Reynolds number turbulence closure model that can be integrated directly to the wall. A no-slip boundary condition for the gas-phase and slip-boundary condition for the particulate phase are used. The computational model is first applied to dilute gas-particle turbulent flow between two parallel vertical walls. The predicted mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are compared with the experimental data of Tsuji et al. (1984) for vertical pipe flows, and good agreement is observed. Examples of additional flow properties such as the phasic fluctuation energy, phasic fluctuation energy production and dissipation, as well as interaction momentum and energy supply terms are also presented and discussed.

Applications to the relatively dense gas-particle turbulent flows in a vertical channel are also studied. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data of Miller & Gidaspow and reasonable agreement is observed. It is shown that flow behavior is strongly affected by the phasic fluctuation energy, and the momentum and energy transfer between the particulate and the fluid constituents.  相似文献

Predictions for two-dimensional, steady, incompressible flows under both laminar and turbulent conditions are presented. The standard k-? turbulence model is used for the turbulent flows. The computational method is based on the approximate factorization technique. The coupled approach is used to link the equations of motion and the turbulence model equations. Mass conservation is enforced by either the pseudocompressibility method or the pressure correction method. Comparison of the two methods shows a superiority of the pressure correction method. Second- and fourth-order artifical dissipation terms are used in order to achieve good convergence and to handle the turbulence model equations efficiently. Several internal and external test cases are investigated, including attached and separated flows.  相似文献

Simulation and Modelling of Turbulent Trailing-Edge Flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Computations of turbulent trailing-edge flow have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 1000 (based on the free-stream quantities and the trailing-edge thickness) using an unsteady 3D Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) code, in which two-equation (k–ε) turbulence models with various low-Re near wall treatments were implemented. Results from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the same flow are available for comparison and assessment of the turbulence models used in the URANS code. Two-dimensional URANS calculations are carried out with turbulence mean properties from the DNS used at the inlet; the inflow boundary-layer thickness is 6.42 times the trailing-edge thickness, close to typical turbine blade flow applications. Many of the key flow features observed in DNS are also predicted by the modelling; the flow oscillates in a similar way to that found in bluff-body flow with a von Kármán vortex street produced downstream. The recirculation bubble predicted by unsteady RANS has a similar shape to DNS, but with a length only half that of the DNS. It is found that the unsteadiness plays an important role in the near wake, comparable to the modelled turbulence, but that far downstream the modelled turbulence dominates. A spectral analysis applied to the force coefficient in the wall normal direction shows that a Strouhal number based on the trailing-edge thickness is 0.23, approximately twice that observed in DNS. To assess the modelling approximations, an a priori analysis has been applied using DNS data for the key individual terms in the turbulence model equations. A possible refinement to account for pressure transport is discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Interaction between turbulence and particles is investigated in a channel flow. The fluid motion is calculated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) with a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, and particles are tracked in a Lagrangian framework through the action of force imposed by the fluid. The particle diameter is smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale, and the point force is used to represent the feedback force of particles on the turbulence. The effects of particles on the turbulence and skin friction coefficient are examined with different particle inertias and mass loadings. Inertial particles suppress intensities of the spanwise and wall-normal components of velocity, and the Reynolds shear stress. It is also found that, relative to the reference particle-free flow, the overall mean skin-friction coefficient is reduced by particles. Changes of near wall turbulent structures such as longer and more regular streamwise low-speed streaks and less ejections and sweeps are the manifestation of drag reduction.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a finite element method with a residual‐based artificial viscosity for simulation of turbulent compressible flow, with adaptive mesh refinement based on a posteriori error estimation with sensitivity information from an associated dual problem. The artificial viscosity acts as a numerical stabilization, as shock capturing, and as turbulence capturing for large eddy simulation of turbulent flow. The adaptive method resolves parts of the flow indicated by the a posteriori error estimates but leaves shocks and turbulence under‐resolved in a large eddy simulation. The method is tested for examples in 2D and 3D and is validated against experimental data. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence are used to investigate the effects of turbulence on the transport of particles in gas flows or bubbles in liquid flows. The inertia associated with the bubbles or the particles leads to locally strong concentrations of these in regions of instantaneously strong vorticity for bubbles or strain-rate for particles. This alters the average settling rates and other processes. If the mass-loading of the dispersed phase is significant a random “turbulent” flow is generated by the particle settling. A simple demonstration of this is given, showing the statistically axisymmetric character of this flow and how it can modify an ambient turbulent flow.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with simulation of the mean flow and turbulence evolution in a model engine and comparison of the behaviour of certain important turbulence parameters, namely the intensity, length scale and dissipation time scale, as predicted by three variants of the k–? model developed for application to strongly compressible flows. The predictions pertain to the axisymmetric, disc-chamber, four-stroke, Imperial College model engine operating at 200 rpm and compression ratios of 3·5 and 6·7. The paper analyses the predicted variations of these parameters during the induction, compression and expansion strokes and identifies the versions that produce the most consistent and physically plausible variations. The significance, to the turbulence evolution, of the ratio of the turbulence dissipation time scale to the time scale of compression/expansion is also discussed. It is concluded that on these grounds the Morel–Mansour and El Tahry versions are, and the Watkins version is not, suitable for engine applications.  相似文献

The study considers algebraic turbulence modeling in adiabatic gas–liquid annular two-phase flow. After reviewing the existing literature, two new algebraic turbulence models are proposed for both the liquid film and the droplet laden gas core of annular two-phase flow. Both turbulence models are calibrated with experimental data taken from the open literature and their performance critically assessed. Although the proposed turbulence models reproduce the key parameters of annular flow well (average liquid film thickness and pressure gradient) and the predicted velocity profiles for the core flow compare favorably with available core flow velocity measurements, a more accurate experimental database is required to further improve the models accuracy and range of applicability.  相似文献

The liquid turbulence structure of air–water bubbly flow in a 200 mm diameter vertical pipe was experimentally investigated. A dual optical probe was used to measure the bubble characteristics, while the liquid turbulence was measured using hot-film anemometry. Experiments were performed at two liquid superficial velocities of 0.2 and 0.68 m/s for gas superficial velocities in the range of 0–0.18 m/s, corresponding to an area averaged void fraction up to 13.6%. In general, there is an increase in the liquid turbulence energy when the bubbles are introduced into the liquid flow. The increase in the energy mainly occurs over a range of length scales that are on the order of the bubble diameter. A suppression of the turbulence was observed close to the wall at very low void fraction flows. Initially, the suppression occurs in the low wave number range and then extends to higher wave numbers as the suppression is increased.  相似文献

Experimental studies on the turbulence modification in annular two-phase flow passing through a throat section were carried out. The turbulence modification in multi-phase flow due to the interactions between two-phases is one of the most interesting scientific issues and has attracted research attention. In this study, the gas-phase turbulence modification in annular flow due to the gas–liquid phase interaction is experimentally investigated. The annular flow passing through a throat section is under the transient state due to the changing cross sectional area of the channel and resultantly the superficial velocities of both phases are changed compared with a fully developed flow in a straight pipe. The measurements for the gas-phase turbulence were precisely performed by using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer, and made clear the turbulence structure such as velocity profiles, fluctuation velocity profiles. The behavior of the interfacial waves in the liquid film flow such as the ripple or disturbance waves was also observed. The measurements for the liquid film thickness by the electrode needle method were also performed to measure the base film thickness, mean film thickness, maximum film thickness and wave height of the ripple or the disturbance waves.  相似文献

In this paper an implicit projection method for the solution of the two-dimensional, time-dependent, incompressible Navier– Stokes equations is presented. The basic principle of this method is that the evaluation of the time evolution is split into intermediate steps. The computational method is based on the approximate factorization technique. The coupled approach is used to link the equations of motion and the turbulence model equations. The standard k-ϵ turbulence model is used. The current methodology, which has been tested extensively for steady problems, is now applied for the numerical simulation of unsteady flows. Several cases were tested, such as plane or axisymmetric channels, a backward-facing step, a square cavity and an axisymmetric stenosis.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate experimentally the concept of energy harvesting from galloping oscillations with a focus on wake and turbulence effects. The harvester is composed of a unimorph piezoelectric cantilever beam with a square cross-section tip mass. In one case, the harvester is placed in the wake of another galloping harvester with the objective of determining the wake effects on the response of the harvester. In the second case, meshes were placed upstream of the harvester with the objective of investigating the effects of upstream turbulence on the response of the harvester. The results show that both wake effects and upstream turbulence significantly affect the response of the harvester. Depending on the spacing between the two squares and the opening size of the mesh, wake and upstream turbulence can positively enhance the level of the harvested power.  相似文献
