Irreducibility of certain pseudovarieties 1

We prove that the pseudovarieties of all finite semigroups, and of all aperiodic finii e semigroups are irreducible for join, for semidirect product and for Mal’cev product. In particular, these pseudovarieties do not admit maximal proper subpseudovarieties. More generally, analogous results are proved for the pseudovariety of all finite semigroups all of whose subgroups are in a fixed pseudovariety of groups H, provided th.it H is closed under semidirect product.     

A torsion—theoretic generalization of fully bounded Noetherian rings

ABSTRACT

We introduce semidirect and wreath products of finite ordered semigroups and extend some standard decomposition results to this case.     

Semidirect product with an order-computable pseudovariety and tameness

The semidirect product of pseudovarieties of semigroups with an order-computable pseudovariety is investigated. The essential tool is the natural representation of the corresponding relatively free profinite semigroups and how it transforms implicit signatures. Several results concerning the behavior of the operation with respect to various kinds of tameness properties are obtained as applications.     

On idempotent-connected quasi-adequate semigroups

The aim of this paper is to study a class of F-abundant semigroups, that is, u-IC quasi-adequate semigroups. After giving some characterizations of u-IC quasiadequate semigroups, we establish the structure of such semigroups in terms of the semidirect product of bands and cancellative monoids.     

A note on the power semigroup of a completely simple semigroup

We prove the pseudovariety generated by power semigroups of completely simple semigroups is the semidirect product of the pseudovariety of block groups with the pseudovariety of right zero semigroups, and hence is decidable. This answers a question of Almeida from over 15 years ago. The author was supported in part by NSERC.     

On the question of embedding a semigroup into a semiband

In this paper we present a new embedding of a semigroups into a semiband (idempotent-generated semigroup) of depth 4 (every element is the product of 4 idempotents) using a semidirect product construction. Our embedding does not assume that S is a monoid (although it assumes a weaker condition) and works also for (non-monoid) regular semigroups. In fact, this semidirect product construction works particularly well if the semigroup is regular: we can choose the semiband to have depth 2. We shall see that many properties of S are preserved by this construction and we shall compare it to other known embeddings.

On the hyperdecidability of semidirect products of pseudovarieties

The notion of hyperdecidability has been introduced as a tool which is particularly suited for granting decidability of semidirect products. It is shown in this paper that the semidirect product of an hyperdecidable pseudovariety with a pseudovariety whose finitely generated free objects are finite and effectively computable is again hyperdecidable. As instances of this result, one obtains, for example, the hyperdecidability of the pseudovarieties of ail finite completely simple semigroups and of all finite bands of left groups.

On associate subgroups of regular semigroups

We describe the structure of a regular semigroup with an associate subgroup the identiy element of which is a mcdial idempotent. As a particular application of this, we obtain the structure of perfect Dubreil-Jacotin semigroups in which the set of residuals of the bimaximum element form a subgroup.     

Eventually Regular Dubreil-Jacotin Semigroups

We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an ordered eventually regular semigroup to be a Dubreil-Jacotin semigroup. We show that an eventually regular Dubreil-Jacotin semigroup has a biggest idempotent. Necessary and sufficient conditions for this biggest idempotent to be a weak middle unit or to be medial are related to the semigroup being naturally ordered and to the set of regular elements being a subsemigroup.     

Regular F-Abundant Semigroups

ABSTRACT

The investigation of regular F-abundant semigroups is initiated. In fact, F-abundant semigroups are generalizations of regular cryptogroups in the class of abundant semigroups. After obtaining some properties of such semigroups, the construction theorem of the class of regular F-abundant semigroups is obtained. In addition, we also prove that a regular F-abundant semigroup is embeddable into a semidirect product of a regular band by a cancellative monoid. Our result is an analogue of that of Gomes and Gould on weakly ample semigroups, and also extends an earlier result of O'Carroll on F-inverse semigroups.     

The Word Problem in the Variety of Inverse Semigroups with Abelian Covers

The variety of inverse semigroups which possess E-unitary coversover Abelian groups coincides with the Mal'cev product of thevariety of semilattices and the variety of Abelian groups,andalso with the variety generated by semidirect products of semilatticesand Abelian groups. We show that this variety (and any varietyof inverse semigroups that contains this variety) has undecidableword problem.     

Finite aperiodic semigroups with commuting idempotents and generalizations

It is proved that any pseudovariety of finite semigroups generated by inverse semigroups, the subgroups of which lie in some proper pseudovariety of groups, does not contain all aperiodic semigroups with commuting idempotents. In contrast we show that every finite semigroup with commuting idempotents divides a semigroup of partial bijections that shares the same subgroups. Finally, we answer in the negative a question of Almeida as to whether a result of Stiffler characterizing the semidirect product of the pseudovarieties ofR-trivial semigroups and groups applies to any proper pseudovariety of groups.     

Almost Factorizable Weakly Ample Semigroups

An appropriate generalization of the notion of permissible sets of inverse semigroups is found within the class of weakly ample semigroups that allows us to introduce the notion of an almost left factorizable weakly ample semigroup in a way analogous to the inverse case. The class of almost left factorizable weakly ample semigroups is proved to coincide with the class of all (idempotent separating) (2, 1, 1)-homomorphic images of semigroups W(T, Y) where Y is a semilattice, T is a unipotent monoid acting on Y, and W(T, Y) is a well-defined subsemigroup in the respective semidirect product that appeared in the structure theory of left ample monoids more than ten years ago. Moreover, the semigroups W(T, Y) are characterized to be, up to isomorphism, just the proper and almost left factorizable weakly ample semigroups.     

Abundant Left C-lpp Proper Semigroups

The aim of this paper is to study a class of left abundant semigroups, so-called abundant left C-lpp proper semigroups including left type A proper semigroups and right inverse proper semigroups as its subclasses. A structure theorem similar to McAlisters for inverse proper semigroups is obtained. As its application, it is verified that any abundant left C-lpp proper semigroup can be embedded into a semidirect product of a left regular band by a cancellative monoid.AMS Subject Classification (1991): 20M10Suppoted by the Foundation of Yunnan University and also by the Director Foundation of Yunnan Province.     

Finite separable metacyclic 2-groups

A finite separable metacyclic 2-group G can be written as the semidirect product of a cyclic group with another cyclic group. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for when all other split decompositions of G result in, up to isomorphism, this same semidirect product representation for G.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">E</Emphasis>-inversive Dubreil-Jacotin semigroups

Using group congruences, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an ordered E-inversive semigroup to be a Dubreil-Jacotin semigroup. We also determine when such a semigroup is naturally ordered. In particular, when the subset of regular elements is a subsemigroup it contains a multiplicative inverse transversal.

On the Decidability of Iterated Semidirect Products with Applications to Complexity

The notion of hyperdecidability has been introduced by the firstauthor as a tool to prove decidability of semidirect productsof pseudovarieties of semigroups. In this paper we considersome stronger notions which lead to improved decidability resultsallowing us in turn to establish the decidability of some iteratedsemidirect products. Roughly speaking, the decidability of asemidirect product follows from a mild, commonly verified propertyof the first factor plus the stronger property for all the otherfactors. A key role in this study is played by intermediatefree semigroups (relatively free objects of expanded type lyingbetween relatively free and relatively free profinite objects).As an application of the main results, the decidability of theKrohn–Rhodes (group) complexity is shown to follow fromnon-algorithmic abstract properties likely to be satisfied bythe pseudovariety of all finite aperiodic semigroups, therebysuggesting a new approach to answer (affirmatively) the questionas to whether complexity is decidable. 1991 Mathematics SubjectClassification: primary 20M05, 20M07, 20M35; secondary 08B20.
