Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

The harmonic content of the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of 1% polyacrylamide in 50% glycerol/water was studied using a standard Model R 18 Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. Since the temperature is not an additive function, the traditional thermodynamic point of view suggests that the volume integral of the temperature has no precise physical meaning. This observation conflicts with the customary analysis of non-isothermal catalytic reactors, heat pipes, driers, geothermal processes, etc., in which the volume averaged temperature plays a crucial role. In this paper we identify the thermodynamic significance of the volume averaged temperature in terms of a simple two-phase heat transfer process. Given the internal energy as a function of the point temperature and the density
we show that the volume averaged internal energy is represented by e = F(T , )when e is a linear function of T and , or when the traditional length-scale constraints associated with the method of volume averaging are satisfied. When these conditions are not met, higher order terms involving the temperature gradient and the density gradient appear in the representation for e .

The equilibrium states of homogeneous turbulence simultaneously subjected to a mean velocity gradient and a rotation are examined by using asymptotic analysis. The present work is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of quantities such as the turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate associated with the fixed point (/kS)=0, whereS is the shear rate. The classical form of the model transport equation for (Hanjalic and Launder, 1972) is used. The present analysis shows that, asymptotically, the turbulent kinetic energy (a) undergoes a power-law decay with time for (P/)<1, (b) is independent of time for (P/)=1, (c) undergoes a power-law growth with time for 1<(P/)<(C 2–1), and (d) is represented by an exponential law versus time for (P/)=(C 2–1)/(C 1–1) and (/kS)>0 whereP is the production rate. For the commonly used second-order models the equilibrium solutions forP/,II, andIII (whereII andIII are respectively the second and third invariants of the anisotropy tensor) depend on the rotation number when (P/kS)=(/kS)=0. The variation of (P/kS) andII versusR given by the second-order model of Yakhot and Orzag are compared with results of Rapid Distortion Theory corrected for decay (Townsend, 1970).

Positively invariant regions for a problem in phase transitions
Positively invariant regions for the system v t + p(W) x = V xx , W t V x = W xx are constructed where p < 0, w < , w > , p(w) = 0, w , > 0. Such a choice of p is motivated by the Maxwell construction for a van der Waals fluid. The method of an analysis is a modification of earlier ideas of Chueh, Conley, & Smoller [1]. The results given here provide independent L bounds on the solution (w, v).Dedicated to Professor James Serrin on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday

Based on a general assumption for plastic potential and yield surface, some properties of the nonassociated plasticity are studied, and the existence and uniqueness of the distribution of incremental stress and displacement for work-hardening materials are proved by using nonsymmetric Lax-Milgram lemma, when the work-hardening parameter A>F/Q/–F/, Q/.

We consider the equation a(y)uxx+divy(b(y)yu)+c(y)u=g(y, u) in the cylinder (–l,l)×, being elliptic where b(y)>0 and hyperbolic where b(y)<0. We construct self-adjoint realizations in L2() of the operatorAu= (1/a) divy(byu)+(c/a) in the case ofb changing sign. This leads to the abstract problem uxx+Au=g(u), whereA has a spectrum extending to + as well as to –. For l= it is shown that all sufficiently small solutions lie on an infinite-dimensional center manifold and behave like those of a hyperbolic problem. Anx-independent cross-sectional integral E=E(u, ux) is derived showing that all solutions on the center manifold remain bounded forx ±. For finitel, all small solutionsu are close to a solution on the center manifold such that u(x)-(x) Ce -(1-|x|) for allx, whereC and are independent ofu. Hence, the solutions are dominated by hyperbolic properties, except close to the terminal ends {±1}×, where boundary layers of elliptic type appear.

Summary Thermal free convection from a sphere has been studied by melting solid benzene spheres in excess liquid benzene (Pr=8,3; 108<Gr<109). Overall heat transfer as well as local heat transfer were investigated. For the effect of cold liquid produced by the melting a correction has been applied. Results are compared with those obtained by other workers who used alternative experimental methods.Nomenclature coefficient of heat transfer - d characteristic length, here diameter of sphere - thermal conductivity - g acceleration of free fall - cubic expansion coefficient - T temperature difference between wall and fluid at infinity - kinematic viscosity - density - c specific heat capacity - a thermal diffusivity (=/c) - D diffusion coefficient - Nu dimensionless Nusselt number (=d/) - Nu* the analogous number for mass transfer (=kd/D) - mean value of Nusselt number - Gr dimensionless Grashof number (=gd 3T/ 2) - Gr* the analogous number for mass transfer (=gd 3x/ 2) - Pr dimensionless Prandtl number (=/a) - Sc dimensionless Schmidt number (=/D)

Let be a simply connected domain in the x 1-x 2 plane which lies within the strip 0<x 2, is a simple closed piecewise smooth curve. Let l= [(x 1, x 2): (x 1, x 2) and x 1>0], l = [(x 1 x 2): (x 1 ,x 2) and x 1>1>0].Suppose that a two-dimensional homogeneous isotropic elastic body occupies , that a self-equilibrated stress loading is applied to - l, and that l is stress-free. Knowles [2] and Flavin [6] showed that the elastic energy in l decays exponentially with respect to l with an exponential decay constant of the form k/b, where k is a universal constant. It is shown here that a decay constant of the form c/ may be obtained where c is a universal constant and is a characteristic dimension of , which is more appropriate than b for general non-striplike domains. In addition, an appropriate decay theorem is obtained for coil-like domains.

A study is presented of the flow of stability of a Grad-model liquid layer [1, 2] flowing over an inclined plane under the influence of the gravity force. It is assumed that at every point of the considered material continuum, along with the conventional velocity vector v, there is defined an angular velocity vector , the internal moment stresses are negligibly small, and in the general case the force stress tensor kj is asymmetric. The model is characterized by the usual Newtonian viscosity , the Newtonian rolling viscosity r, and the relaxation time = J/4 r, where J is a scalar constant of the medium with dimensions of moment of inertia per unit mass, is the density. It is assumed that the medium is incompressible, the coefficients , r, J are constant [2].The exact solution of the equations of motion, corresponding to flow of a layer with a plane surface, coincides with the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the case of flow of a layer of Newtonian fluid. The equations for three-dimensional periodic disturbances differ considerably from the corresponding equations for the problem of the flow stability of a layer of a Newtonian medium. It is shown that the Squire theorem is valid for parallel flows of a Grad liquid. The flow stability of the layer with respect to long-wave disturbances is studied using the method of sequential approximations suggested in [3, 4].

Summary As part of a study on the hydrodynamics of a cyclone separator, a theoretical investigation of the flow pattern in a flat box cyclone (vortex chamber) has been carried out. Expressions have been derived for the tangential velocity profile as influenced by internal friction (eddy viscosity) and wall friction. The most important parameter controlling the tangential velocity profile is = –u 0 R/(v+ ), where u 0 is the radial velocity at the outer radius R of the cyclone, the kinematic liquid viscosity and is the kinematic eddy viscosity. For values of greater than about 10 the tangential velocity profile is nearly hyperbolic, for smaller than 1 the tangential velocity even decreases towards the centre. It is shown how and also the wall friction coefficient may be obtained from experimental velocity profiles with the aid of suitable graphs. Because of the close relation between eddy viscosity and eddy diffusion, measurements of velocity profiles in flat box cyclones will also provide information on the eddy motion of particles in a cyclone, a motion reducing its separation efficiency.List of symbols A cross-sectional area of cyclone inlet - h height of cyclone - p static pressure in cyclone - p static pressure difference in cyclone between two points on different radius - r radius in cyclone - r 1 radius of cyclone outlet - R radius of cyclone circumference - u radial velocity in cyclone - u 0 radial velocity at circumference of flat box cyclone - v tangential velocity - v 0 tangential velocity at circumference of flat box cyclone - w axial velocity - z axial co-ordinate in cyclone - friction coefficient in flat box cyclone (for definition see § 5) - 1 value of friction coefficient for 1<< 2 - 2 value of friction coefficient for 2<<1 - = - 1 value of for 1<< 2 - 2 value of for 2<<1 - thickness of laminar boundary layer - =/h - turbulent kinematic viscosity - ratio of z to h - k ratio of height of cyclone to radius R of cyclone - parameter describing velocity profile in cyclone =–u 0 R/(+) - kinematic viscosity of fluid - density of fluid - ratio of r to R - 1 value of at outlet of cyclone - 2 value of at inner radius of cyclone inlet - w shear stress at cyclone wall - angular momentum in cyclone/angular momentum in cyclone inlet - 1 value of at = 1 - 2 value of at = 2  相似文献

New asymptotic approaches for dynamical systems containing a power nonlinear term x n are proposed and analyzed. Two natural limiting cases are studied: n 1 + , 1 and n . In the firstcase, the 'small method' (SM)is used and its applicability for dynamical problems with the nonlinearterm sin as well as the usefulness of the SMfor the problem with small denominators are outlined. For n , a new asymptotic approach is proposed(conditionally we call it the 'large method' –LM). Error estimations lead to the followingconclusion: the LM may be used, even for smalln, whereas the SM has a narrow application area. Both of the discussed approaches overlap all values ofthe parameter n.

The first goal of this paper is to study the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the 3-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes system. The Marcinkiewicz space L3, is used to prove some asymptotic stability results for solutions with infinite energy. Next, this approach is applied to the analysis of two classical regularized Navier–Stokes systems. The first one was introduced by J. Leray and consists in mollifying the nonlinearity. The second one was proposed by J.-L. Lions, who added the artificial hyper-viscosity (–)/ 2, > 2 to the model. It is shown in the present paper that, in the whole space, solutions to those modified models converge as t toward solutions of the original Navier–Stokes system.

Nonlinear wave processes in shockloaded elastoplastic materials are modeled. A comparison of the results obtained with experimental data and numerical solutions of exact systems of dynamic equations shows that the model equations proposed qualitatively describe the stressdistribution evolution in both the elasticflow and plasticflow regions and can be used to solve one and twodimensional problems of pulsed deformation and fracture of elastoplastic media.

In dynamic rheological experiments melt behavior is usually expressed in terms of complex viscosity * () or complex modulusG * (). In contrast, we attempted to use the complex fluidity * () = 1/µ * () to represent this behavior. The main interest is to simplify the complex-plane diagram and to simplify the determination of fundamental parameters such as the Newtonian viscosity or the parameter of relaxation-time distribution when a Cole-Cole type distribution can be applied. * () complex shear viscosity - () real part of the complex viscosity - () imaginary part of the complex viscosity - G * () complex shear modulus - G() storage modulus in shear - G() loss modulus in shear - J * () complex shear compliance - J() storage compliance in shear - J() loss compliance in shear - shear strain - rate of strain - angular frequency (rad/s) - shear stress - loss angle - * () complex shear fluidity - () real part of the complex fluidity - () imaginary part of the complex fluidity - 0 zero-viscosity - 0 average relaxation time - h parameter of relaxation-time distribution

Summary The dynamic-mechanical behaviour of bitumensilica composites is described by a linear biparabolic model. Its mathematical expression allows the calculation of the mean relaxation times () either at different temperatures and given filler contents or for diverse filler contents () at imposed temperatures. At fixed filler concentration and within restricted temperature domains, obeys Arrhenius' law. The activation energies are respectively close to 10 kcal/mole (creep) and 30 kcal/mole (glass-transition). varies exponentially with. The mathematical treatment of the expressions ofE , as a function of temperature and of, leads to a general equation relating the complex modulus to temperature, frequency and filler content. A unique master curve, accounting for the viscoelastic behaviour of the composites, in limited ranges, can thus be constructed.
